Final Approach ~ Review

Final Approach
Lake City Heroes #4
By Lynette Eason

Kristine Duncan is about to enjoy a vacation with her friends. She just needs to finish this flight as the onboard air marshal, and she'll be free to relax. But then everything goes wrong as a passenger attempts to hijack the plane she's on. R&R is on hold as Kristine and her friends investigate just what happened, because something is just not adding up.

The deeper Kristine and FBI Special Agent Andrew Ross dig, the more it becomes apparent that someone is targeting one of them. All the clues seem to point to Andrew's past as an undercover agent. But how does this relate to the hijacking?

Final Approach is an intricate and deceptive mystery that has so many twists that you won't be able to easily determine who the mastermind is. And there is cheesecake, lots of it, you may want to have a slice or two on hand, because it's cheesecake. I recommend getting a couple of flavors or a sampler. This book was definitely a late-night, just-one-more-chapter read. I recommend it for Friday night if you don't get a Saturday shift. And the "villain"? Wowzers! That's all I'm saying. It is a must-read, top of the TBR stack book if you love Romantic Suspense.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
She's intent on investigating a sinister plot of revenge, and it will take all her courage to survive.

Air Marshal Kristine Duncan is not on duty when a hijacker attempts to seize control of the plane she and her friends are on as they head out on a much-needed vacation. Jumping into action and aided by FBI Special Agent Andrew Ross, Kristine thwarts the attack and the plane lands safely. But as the investigation into the incident gets underway, Kristine and Andrew are confused at every step. Nothing about the investigation goes as it should, and each layer they peel back just reveals another layer of perplexity.

As the two work together to navigate a web of deception, blame, and personal reckoning, they find there's more to this story than meets the eye--and more to love and admire about each other. They'll have to put their skills to the test--and their hearts on the line--to unravel the truth and ensure that justice prevails.

Of Sea and Sorrow ~ Release Day Review

Of Sea and Sorrow
Victorians at the Beach
By Heloise C. Kensington

Edith Linton's younger brother, Theo, is ill with consumption, and the only hope for him is the seaside town of Weymouth, although Edith has reservations about its curative qualities and the doctor overseeing his care.

Dr. Henry Forester's new medical methods are viewed with suspicion. These include opening windows, frequent hand washing, changing linens, and disposing of soiled rags. Henry hopes he can aid Theo, but the long-term outlook is not good due to the length and severity of his illness.

As Henry becomes more involved in the Linton family, friendships form. Edith continues to hold him at arm's length until an accident allows her to see him with new eyes.

This book is a moving story of hopes, broken hearts, and misunderstandings. Both Henry and Edith manage to not share their thoughts when it is most important. Instead, misunderstanding and loss threaten to separate them forever. Edith is very stubborn and is her own worst enemy. She shares one trait with Mr. Darcy; her good opinion, once lost, is not easily changed. But overall, this was an easy read. Fortunately, her brother Theo opens Henry's eyes to the reasons behind Edith's "prickly exterior."

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Disappointed in love, Edith Linton has given up on her dreams of matrimony and a home of her own. Concerned about her beloved brother’s health, she acquiesces to a summer by the sea after her mother determines it is the only way to improve his health, setting aside her own worries about her future.

Recently returned from the war in Crimea, Dr. Henry Forester hopes to improve medical practices in the seaside town of Weymouth, England. Not everyone is receptive to his new methods, especially his new patient's protective older sister.

Will Edith and Henry find a way to see past their differences? Or will all hope for the future pass before it has a chance to thrive?

Part of Victorians at the Beach, a series of standalone sweet Victorian novellas. Of Sea and Sorrow is a standalone novella in the Victorians at the Beach series, where seaside summers meet sweet romance.

Captured in the fallout of a deadly attack, Rafi grapples with the ghosts of the past. His brother is alive but no longer himself, and Rafi will stop at nothing to save him. Farther up the coast, Ceridwen strives to reignite the embers of the rebellion to burn the empire down. The Lady of Red River Valley ~ Release Day

Front cover art of The Lady of Red River Valley featuring a man and woman in an embrace
The Lady of Red River Valley
Ladies of the Wilderness #2
By Gabrielle Meyer

For the last three years, Arran MacLean has worked tirelessly to establish a permanent settlement near Lake Winnipeg. If he can hold the colony together for five years, he has been promised one thousand acres of land. However, the colony's enemies have driven the colonists from the land at every opportunity. But Arran holds steady, believing in the dream that brought him to this place.

Lady Eleanor Brooke refused Arran's offer of marriage, not because she didn't love him, but because of her father. Now she has nothing, and the unfamiliar, harsh world that she has traveled to could steal all she has left - her life. Arran is determined to see her gone, but winter and its challenges have tied her to the colony until at least spring.

This is a story of differences and misunderstanding, where those in power fail to heed the words of wisdom offered by those who see beyond the current situation. Arran sees danger and that more needs to be done to ensure the settlers' safety. He is willing to sacrifice his second chance at love to keep those dear to him safe. However, there are times when all our planning cannot control how life unfolds, and this is just such a time.

This story explores the turbulent history of the Red River Valley in Winnipeg in 1815 and the efforts of those seeking to claim the land as their own. There are several intense scenes that stayed with me long after I put the book down.  I appreciated this glimpse into Canadian history. I've read about the issues surrounding the Hudson Bay Company before, but nothing that brought it to life like this book did.   One can't help but root for Arran and Eleanor to have a chance to be together and to be out of harm's way. This one tugs at the emotions, so you may want a tissue or two nearby.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

By 1815, Arran MacLean has been working for three years to build the Red River Colony near Lake Winnipeg. Each year, the colonists have been driven out by disease, hunger, and their enemies, the North West Company. He's thankful that the woman he loved, Lady Eleanor Brooke, had enough sense to turn him down when he asked her to marry him. But her rejection still haunts his memories.

Lady Eleanor Brooke has one regret, not marrying Arran when he proposed to her four years ago. At the time, her father had been in deep financial trouble and needed her to marry well. Now, with her father in Newgate Prison, and a scandal hanging over her head, Eleanor has nothing left to lose. She travels to the Red River Colony as a teacher, hoping to rekindle her relationship with Arran, but quickly realizes that coming to the North American Wilderness was a mistake.

Life in the colony is dangerous and heartbreaking, and Arran doesn’t want Eleanor to suffer. He plans to put her on the first ship back to England in the spring, but his plans are thwarted when their enemy attacks, and they are faced with insurmountable odds. When the worst happens, will they have what it takes to fight for the Red River Colony, and for each other?

Shadowed Witness ~ Review

Shadowed Witness
The Secrets of Kincaid #2
By Angela Carisle

Shadowed Witness front cover art
Allye Jessup knows what she saw and what she experienced. But other than the bruising on her neck there is no evidence to the brutal beating she witnessed. She saw a murder, at least she thinks she did. And with her recent memory issues she is beginning to doubt herself.

The Kincaid police department investigates Allye's claims but they have no evidence to coroborate her claims - no body, no signs of a struggle, and a witness statement that throws doubt on her story. Detective Eric Thornton is the lone dectective in Kincaid and he is overwhelmed at present with other cases. But when it becomes apparent that something is going on and Allye might be in danger, Eric will do everything in his power to keep her safe.

And with all engaging romantic suspense reads, there are secrets that both Allye and Eric are keeping that naturally stand in their way of finding love. And the secrets they are keeping are real doozies. Yeah, so some serious baggage to deal with. As for the ne'er-do-well responsible for the whole mess that Allye and Eric find themselves in, that is a whole other mess with some interesting twists that totally blindsided me. The climax was truly a climax.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Murder—that’s what photographer Allye Jessup knows she witnessed as she departed her studio one evening. Waking with bruises on her neck and a foggy memory, she believes she survived an attack, but everyone seems to think she simply sustained a head injury from falling down the stairs of her studio. Plagued by an undiagnosed health condition, she is torn between the haunting reality of what she may have seen and the possibility that her mind is playing tricks on her.

Without proof the other victim ever existed, Detective Eric Thornton can hardly declare the area a murder scene. Still, he adds Allye’s report to his already full caseload. But when new evidence surfaces to support her claims, Eric must stay one step ahead of a ruthless killer and uncover the truth before the suspect closes in on Allye again.

Angela Carlisle once again presents cutting-edge romantic suspense laced with danger, deception, and justice.

Amidst Ruins and Remembrances ~ Release Day and Review

Amidst Ruins and Remembrances
Victorians at the Beach
By Amy Newbold

Eloise Deighton has gotten over the broken heart Griffith Hastings left her with when he promised to come back for her. He never did. At 26, Eloise knows her days as an eligible lady have come to an end, and she's good with that, really. After several years in London, she has returned to Whitby and its shores. If only she felt as if she belonged somewhere.

But now Griffith, a widower, is back, and he has brought his young daughter with him. Can the past, with its pain, be overlooked? Can love bloom again?

My favorite line from the book is: "No one can foresee the future. What you have to decide is this: can you live with it if you never find out the answer?" Eloise and Griffith have a chance at their dream from ten years ago. This was a sweet read that provided a lovely evening of enjoyment

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Where the ruins meet the sea, can love find a second chance?

A chance encounter between Eloise and Griffith causes old memories to sweep in like the tide. Griffith is determined to win her back, but he will have to convince her that he has changed. Can the sea that once united them bring a second chance at love?

Amidst Ruins and Remembrances is a standalone novella in the Victorians at the Beach series where seaside summers meet sweet romance.

The Neighbor and the Gifts

The Neighbor and the Gifts
A Christmas Cabin Novella
By Danielle Grandinetti

Olivia Larson's plans for Christmas include spending time with her grandfather. What she didn't plan on was an unknown admirer sending her gifts in the spirit of the Twelve Days of Christmas and declaring her his true love. Panic attack!!

Titus Wilburn has always admired and fancied Ollie, but he's just never made any overtures to declare or hint at his feelings to her. But with someone terrorizing the woman he has feelings for, he'll do anything to keep her safe. And safety means hiding her out in the Wisconsin Northwoods with her grandfather.

All is good until Titus is injured and the gift-giver finds them. With the days until Christmas counting down, Titus and Ollie, along with Casper and her grandfather, will have to work through the few clues they have if they hope to stay safe and protect those they love.

As someone who lives in Wisconsin, I love reading historical fiction set in Wisconsin, and when there is suspense and a sweet romance thrown in nothin' could be better except throwing in a dash of Christmas. The Neighbor and the Gifts gave me all of these, and it was so good! The book was the perfect length for a long night of reading. And as to the identity of the gift-giver, no hints are given away early in the book. All around, this was a good escape from a hot, humid evening with no A/C.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed were my own.

Deputy Titus Wilburn is happy to escort the lovely librarian to her grandfather’s house on his way to the neighboring Yarwood cabin. After all, he’s been smitten with her since they attended school together, and she needs his protection. However, the plan fails when Ollie’s uninvited suitor discovers her new location.
