Safehouse Under Siege ~ Review

Safehouse Under Siege
Lone Star Defenders #5
By Virginia Vaughan

Four years ago, Emily Matthews' life was changed when she witnessed her fiancé murder before her very eyes. Since then, she has been hidden away from the life she had before. But someone is determined to silence her, and they won't let WITSEC's anonymity stop them.

Four years ago, Wyatt Briggs lost his brother and the woman who brought so much to their lives. When a fellow US Marshal reaches out to let him know Emily's identity has been compromised and that a mole exists within their organization, Wyatt vows to do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

But first he has to find her in a small town called Mercy, Texas, with no resources he can call on to help him get her to safety before it is too late.

After four years of living as someone else, Emily is not ready to just pack up and run. What's to stop the man hunting from chasing her for the rest of her life? She's got friends in Mercy and people she trusts to help keep her safe. But can she convince Wyatt that they need to stand firm in Mercy? Or will they flee in the night, leaving questions in their wake?

Safehouse Under Siege is the fifth book in Virginia Vaughan's Lone Star Defenders series. This a clean romantic suspense from the Love Inspired Suspense collection. You can expect twists, community, found family, clean/wholesome romance, non-graphic violence, second chances, and near escapes. And there may be a HEA or HFN to cap off the book, but you'll have to get your own copy to find out if Wyatt and Emily can escape an enemy who has no fear of the law or justice thanks to his deep pockets and lack of compassion.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Her Reluctant Amish Heart ~ Review

Her Reluctant Amish Heart
Humble Blessings #3
By Pamela Desmond Wright

Elam Muller pulled away from his Amish roots following the death of his parents. He sought a feeling of belonging, and he thinks he's found that in the Englisch world and his love of fixing automobiles. But when he makes a decision that could have cost a young man his life, Elam's life is upended, and he finds himself doing community service on the very farm of the young man who was hurt.

Anika Glick's life is a mess. After a tragic accident changed everything, the last thing she needed was for her younger brother to be injured when a former Amish young man makes a selfish decision. When Elam Mueller shows up at her door to work off his community service hours, well, she is not pleased.

But as Elam helps out, Anika comes to realize just how much her life has changed in the last couple of years, of how much she has lost. And Elam discovers how much he gave up when he left the faith and beliefs that guided him before he lost his way. But can he give up the outside world, the excitement, the cars, the racing for a simple life?

This was a good read that showed how loss affects people differently. Both Anika and Elam respond differently, but at the root of both their reactions is pain and grief. As they work together, their lives begin to change, and their hearts open up to new possibilities. But can they truly break free of the shackles of their old destructive choices? If you're a fan of sweet romance, second chances, and Amish fiction, I would recommend this book, which can be read as a standalone title. And as this is a Love Inspired title, you can be assured of a clean read, wholesome level one romance, and a satisfactory ending with a happily-ever-after in their future.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Can her guarded heart
find its way to love and redemption?

When a reckless street race injures her brother, Anika Glick wants nothing to do with the man responsible—especially when he’s sentenced to help her family. But Elam Muller is desperate to prove he’s changed. As they work together on her family farm, Anika finds herself drawn to Elam’s remorse and kindness. But when they're presented with one last risky race that could secure their future or destroy it all, everything they’ve built is put to the test. Will their growing love survive the pull of the past—or will it all come crashing down?

The Robber and the Witness ~ Review

The Robber and the Witness
The Christmas Cabin #4
By Danielle Grandinetti

Okay, I totally love The Christmas Cabin series by Danielle Grandinetti, which is set in 1930s Wisconsin. Of note, you do not have to read the books in order to enjoy them, but it is fun to do so, as there are references to previous Christmases and characters who found their way to love there.

This time we are introduced to Evangeline (Eva) Whitaker, whose older brother needs to be away over Christmas. Now Eva is known for her kind heart, and Evan doesn't trust her not to get in trouble because of this compassionate quality. So he has their old family friend escort her to another home, to strangers, to spend the holiday in their company.

Evangeline doesn't mind that Gideon Lundgren will be escorting her. Nope, she secretly had a childhood crush on him. But it's been years since they have seen one another. Of course, in the few minutes between Evan's train leaving and Gideon's arriving, Eva does exactly what Evan feared she would do. She helps out a stranger and finds herself tangled up in a robbery!

Now with a winter storm threatening their travel, Gideon outside of his deputy jurisdiction, and the robber desperate to retrieve the money he stole, Evangeline is about to have a Christmas unlike any she has ever experienced. And maybe she'll get the Christmas gift she is wishing for.

Yes, this was a sweet historical romantic mystery. Perfect for readers who want their romance and mystery closer to a G rating than an R. If you want romance that doesn't cross any lines and mysteries that don't rely on profane language or graphic violence, you will want to experience this newest addition to the Christmas Cabin series. Highly recommended and appropriate for the youngest romance reader.

About the Book:

Christmas … a time of reunions and unexpected surprises.
A simple favor, a best friend's promise, and the end of the line.

Wisconsin, 1931—When Gideon Lundgren agrees to escort his best friend's sister to Manitowish Waters, plans go awry when she witnesses a robbery. He thinks he's merely escorting the girl he once knew, but she's grown into a charming beauty.

Evangeline Whitaker's older brother always warned that her kind heart would be the death of her. It might at that. First, when she's an unwitting accomplice to a robber. Second, when her childhood crush becomes her bodyguard.

With a robber on their trail and a tangle of emotions between them, Evangeline and Gideon detour to his boss's cabin to wait out the ensuing manhunt. However, Evangeline's Christmas spirit might be the death of them both.

One cabin in the Northwoods … a decade of Christmas miracles.

A 1930s Historical Romantic Mystery

This page-turning novella offers a slow-burn romance mixed with cozy suspense. Set during a December 1931 manhunt, it unfolds against the backdrop of a secluded Wisconsin cabin. Perfect for fans of Laura Frantz and Rhys Bowen looking for an inspirational read.

The Preacher's Promise ~ Review

First off, I have to say I have very mixed feelings about this book.
Read my review and judge for yourself if it is for you.

The Preacher's Promise
Men of Midas #2
By Victoria Bylin
Reverend John Leaf is not proud of his past, but a stint in prison was just what he needed to turn his life around. Unfortunately, a heart washed clean by the gift of salvation can't erase the sins of the past, and John Leaf's past has come to Midas in the form of Abbie Windsor, the woman he loved and left years ago.

Abbie has a problem; her teenage daughter Susanna has run away in search of her father. The father who did not know she existed, and this unknown, missing daughter is John's greatest fear come true. He knows he isn't father material and he should never be one; he knows the darkness that lives within him.

Now this book came with a content warning of references to past domestic violence. In my opinion, it is a little more than that, as it actually occurs to another character in the book's real time. It is also a major factor throughout the book because Abbie is still dealing with the scars mentally, physically, and emotionally through the majority of the book. Which, unfortunately, is how real life happens: one doesn't just survive abuse and move on as if nothing traumatic occurred. It shapes one's future interactions and is evident in how Abbie deals with those people in her life and defines her feelings and reactions to John.

This book definitely left me with mixed feelings. I had to take this book slowly and was not able to read through it quickly as I often do.
Was it well-written? Yes.
Were the characters engaging? Yes.
Would I recommend this book to others? Yes and no.

I feel this book would help those who haven't suffered abuse to get a glimpse into what friends or family who have might be silently experiencing. So yes, but with a warning that it could be unsettling to the reader.

What I did not like:
The main characters engaged in premarital relations, which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy. This in turn led to Abbie's marriage to her abusive husband.
Too much physical intimacy for my tastes or comfort level.
Nakedness of Abbie, which I realize was to drive home the extent of the abuse she suffered under her husband.

This is a story of redemption, forgiveness, and second chances. It is a glimpse into the mercy of God in allowing one to accept the healing power of Salvation. Of working through hidden pains.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Because Love is Worth the Risk

Reverend John Leaf wasn’t always the man he is now—a fact driven home when a letter arrives from a fifteen-year-old girl claiming to be his daughter. What John fears most in this world is passing on his bad blood to a child. But if the letter from Susanna Windsor is true, he’s already done exactly that.

His fears are confirmed when Abigail Windsor, once Abbie Moore, arrives in Midas. Widowed and accompanied by her incorrigible son, Abbie needs John’s help. Her daughter Susanna has run away from her Washington, DC home and is searching for him—not in Midas but in Bitterroot, Wyoming, where John’s most feared enemy has sworn revenge on him.

Susanna is in danger.  So are John and Abbie for entirely different reasons. Only love can heal past hurts and the emotional wounds left by Abbie’s violent marriage. But with love comes risk—and danger in the form of Ben Gantry, a man determined to exact revenge on John and his family.

Until I Knew You ~ Review

Until I Knew You
By Tanya Eavenson

Jacob Michaels never liked his best friend's wife. He couldn't see why Clay Logan wanted to marry Olivia. But when the unimaginable happens and Jacob is named Olivia's trustee, he begins to see her in a new light.

Until I Knew You takes the reader on a journey of understanding and looking beyond labels. Olivia is autistic, an artist, a widow, and grieving. Jacob is a photographer, an orphan, a former child, and he too is caught up in his grief.

Shared loss forces Jacob and Olivia to spend time together, but this allows Jacob to finally see the woman that his best friend fell in love with. But Olivia is also a reminder of his guilt concerning Clay's death.

I appreciated how the author portrayed Olivia-her strengths, her weaknesses, her quirks-she was presented as multilayered woman who knew her own mind yet was limited by what others viewed as limitations. I admired Clay for having the foresight to pick someone who would honor his wishes regarding Olivia, someone who would fight for her, allow her to grow, to see past the limitations and labels others placed upon her. This is a book about second chances.

I highly recommend this book that is emotionally moving while celebrating the beauty of God's creation and His love.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

But when a hiking trip ends in tragedy and Jacob returns alone, everything changes, and Clay’s final request becomes Jacob’s new reality: take care of Olivia, protect her, don’t walk away.

Now her legal trustee, Jacob steps into a life he never intended. Bound by grief and a promise neither asked for, he and Olivia are drawn into a fragile closeness they don’t know how to navigate.

The Duke's Bargain ~ Review

The Duke's Bargain
A Proper Romance
By Megan Walker

Miss Georgiana Wood has lived as a recluse after a major social misstep—one that has ruined her reputation. But when the Duke of Marlow comes to recover a ring that his cousin lost in a game of chance, Georgiana has a chance to reclaim the position that she lost. She requests three outings in exchange for returning the ring.

But when her brother is called away for an emergency, everything is upended, and Georgiana and Marlow find themselves together more than they expected. For Marlow what had been an unwanted way to reclaim what was his always him to rediscover who he is beneath the title. But he has a duty and Georgiana is a complication to the plans he has made. And happiness, his happiness was never part of it.
This was a lovely read. I loved how Marlow's family helped him and exasperate him and how Georgiana allowed him to see them for who they were and that life was not just a set of rules and expectations. Does their bargain go as planned? Not at all. But a planned life is not necessarily the best life. If I had to describe this book in just a couple of words, I would say sweet and complicated.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
One Season.
One Bargain.
One last chance at love.

Eight months after a stolen kiss ruined her reputation, Miss Georgiana Wood is a recluse, cast out of Society without any hope of ever finding a suitable match. Longing for redemption, she never expects her salvation to arrive in the form of a handsome, temperamental duke.

After a failed bargain left the Duke of Marlow without a promised wife and heir, he must face courtship a final time. He plans to entice his future bride with a priceless family heirloom—one now in the possession of Miss Wood, who agrees to return it if he takes her on three outings in London during the Season to restore her reputation.

Shipwrecked Faith

Shipwrecked Faith
Dawning Sisters #1
By Danielle Grandinetti

Sadie Dawning left home to escape, though she justified as a means to help save the family farm. But when she receives word that her father is unwell, she drops everything to return to her Wisconsin home, leaving Chicago behind. But things don't go quite right, starting with having to escape Chicago by being rescued by a perfect stranger and then being smuggled out of the city!

Kellan O'Roark is desperate to escape Chicago and his older cousin's nefarious deeds. He has one chance to make good his escape and help bring Tiernan to justice, but when he sees Sadie in danger, he does what no one else will; he steps in to help.

This book is the first in a new series by the author, and I totally loved it and can't wait for book two to be released. I loved how the author brought the characters to life and made them relatable, people I was rooting for to succeed. I loved how Sadie's faith meant so much to her being, though incidents from the past had shaken her. And Kellan, my heart ached for him and the childhood he had after losing his parents. His feelings of worthlessness and the guilt he felt over what he had done for and now to his cousin so defined him.

My favorite part of this book was how it brought actual historical events to life in a way that history books and class never did. And living in Wisconsin, this added an extra touch in my opinion. Highly recommend to teens and up.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Anchoring You ~ Review

Anchoring You
The Wright Heroes of Maine #9
By Robin Patchen

When pirates try to take the yacht she is transporting, Kenzie Wright isn't about to be taken without a fight, not when the lives of her crew depend on her. There is just one little problem: she is woefully unprepared for an attack, with weapons at a minimum, and no safe space to hide. YIKES! But she's a Wright, and Wrights don't give up!

Jasper Aylett has a reputation, and it's not good. Nope, he's bad news. He abandoned his family and is living the life that would have made his late mother shudder if she could see him. But Jasper, aka Jax, made his mistakes and now has to live with the consequences. Consequences that forced him to give up one thing he loves most in the world. But he's fighting back the only way he knows how; unfortunately, saving Kenzie is about to upset his carefully crafted cover.

This is a contemporary romance with faith elements, but it is not in-your-face, preachy. No, for Kenzie, it is just part of who she is. For Jasper, it was part of his past, but now, with his life spiraling out of his control, it is something knocking on his soul. These aren't perfect characters; they have flaws and failings, just like everyone else, which is what makes this book a more compelling read.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the author. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
On the glittering waters of the Caribbean,
a yacht captain’s fight for survival forces her to
rely on a man she swore she’d never trust.

A fiercely independent yacht captain, Kenzie Wright has spent her life disregarding her family’s expectations. She thrives on freedom, charting her own course, and never staying in one place—or with one person—for long. But when a routine voyage thrusts her into the crosshairs of a deadly drug cartel, her carefully crafted agenda is blown apart. Her last hope to save herself and her crew is the partying playboy, Jaz.

DEA informant Jasper Aylett has spent years hunting the cartel leader known only as the Ghost. The mission has cost him everything—his family, his reputation, and his chance at redemption. When a beautiful yacht captain gets caught in the Ghost’s web, Jaz risks his life to rescue her. It’s his last chance to secure the information he needs to take his enemy down—and get his life back.

Kenzie is forced into hiding with Jaz, and now two cartels want her dead. With their lives on the line, Kenzie and Jaz must work together to unravel the Ghost’s network before it’s too late. But the closer they get to the truth—and to each other—the more their past wounds and buried fears threaten to tear them apart, leaving them vulnerable to an enemy who won’t stop until they’re both destroyed.

From a USA Today bestselling author… Don’t miss this heart-pounding suspense and swoon-worthy romance as Kenzie and Jasper discover their fight for survival—and for love—can only be won together.

The Tale of Capri ~ Review

The Tale of Capri
A Story Inspired by MerMay
The Capri Saga #1
By Kathleen Solis

When Capri is injured and hunted, she has no choice but to make her way to land if she wants a chance at surviving. But she never expected that she would have to allow a human to help her.

She doesn't trust humans, and doubts she ever will, she's seen the destruction they've caused, the pain, the suffering. But Eden is different. He seems kind, caring, and respectful.

The Tale of Capri is a sweet story, but it is also a warning as Eden is given a chance to experience life in the ocean through Capri's eyes. The filth and destruction caused but humanities carelessness. The trash and contamination allowed to destroy the oceans. But it is also a love story and a lesson on the fragility of love when secrets are kept.

This story is, in my opinion, a small gem of delight that is appropriate for teens and adults who are looking for a clean read and what a mermaid tale that is more than a retelling of The Little Mermaid. I love that it is inspired by Mer-May.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

P.S. Content warning: Drinking is discussed - it is warning against the consequences and even choosing your friends wisely.

About the Book:
Eden, a kind young lifeguard, rescues an injured mermaid named Capri, who absolutely doesn't trust humans. With no chance at survival at sea, Capri has no choice but to remain under Eden's care in his secluded saltwater pool.

Over time, Capri's guarded heart begins to melt as she discovers a different side of humanity...and Eden begins to inadvertently fall in love with her while hiding a secret that would shatter the trust he's built with her.

When Capri offers him a single wish, Eden's choice will change their lives forever, launching them into an adventure filled with wonder, love, and secrets that neither of them could have bargained for.

An Amish Widow's Hope ~ Review

An Amish Widow's Hope
By Pamela Desmond Wright

Evan Miller left his Amish roots behind sixteen years ago, following a personal tragedy. But he left more than a way of life behind when he chose a law enforcement career; he left his family, the woman he loved, and his peace. Everything he has given up becomes clear when he answers a call at Isla Stohl's home. Regrets have never tasted so bitter.

When Evan left without a word, Isla's world and life were thrown into chaos. She married and had a family, but it wasn't the life she and Evan had planned. Now Isla is widowed and struggling to make ends meet when she is robbed. She never expected Evan to walk back into her life, leading the investigation as sheriff.

As Evan does what he can to solve this rash of burglaries in the Amish community, he is put at a fork in the road, so to speak. What does he want from the rest of his life?  And then there is Isla. Could they have a chance at the future they had once dreamed of before he made a decision that should have been theirs to make, not his?

An Amish Widow's Hope is a story of second chances, new beginnings, and finding one's way back home. There is a touch of mystery involved, but the focus is on rebuilding what has been lost and family. All said, this was a lovely read, and one I would highly recommend to those looking for clean reads and love stories that feature the power of redemption and forgiveness.

I was gifted a copy of this book by the author with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Escape to Passignano ~ Review

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Escape to Passignano by Normandie Fischer,

Escape to Passignano
Carolina Coast Stories
By Normandie Fischer

This was an interesting read. I will admit I had a little trouble getting into it at first. But I'm glad I pushed past my reader's block because once I was past I really got into this book. There is a bit of a mystery, a touch of romance, guilt, grief, and a glimpse into the spiritual aspects of the human heart.

Sophia has been exploring Italy, the home of her late husband. She is seeking the peace he talked of and experienced. While there, she meets a young girl, Noemi, who captures her attention and maybe a bit of her heart. Turns out Noemi is in her aunt's care while her father grieves a great personal tragedy.

Things begin to happen that unsettle Sophia. One thing leads to another, and soon Sophia and Neomi's father, Dr. Luca Moretti, are searching for the young girl. This is when the mystery and the story's spiritual aspects come into play.

This is a book that engages the reader on multiple levels and is well worth the journey, and one I'm glad I took.

Can dreams be trusted when life feels like a nightmare?

Sophia chose to honor her deceased husband’s wishes by visiting his hometown of Passignano sul Trasimeno in the Umbrian region of Italy. She’s trying to find the peace he promised, really she is, while she studies his language and sips caffè with a view of mountains and lake. Only, things begin to happen involving a red-haired child who speaks of things she cannot know—and the child’s father whose very presence challenges that peace.

Dr. Luca Moretti still wrestles with guilt three years after the death of his wife and older children. Overwhelmed by grief, Luca gave the care of his toddler daughter, Noemi, to his sister. It was supposed to be temporary; it wasn’t. Now, Luca wants Noemi back.

When his sister flees, taking Noemi into hiding, Sophia joins forces with a desperate Luca to piece together dreams and voices and supernatural nudges to retrace Noemi’s steps. It’s going to take trust, though, something in short supply for both Luca and Sophia. They’ll have to learn to trust in one another, and, more importantly, to trust in God—that a God who would allow such pain really does mean to work it all out for good. For Noemi. It might have been better for her if she'd used all these opportunities more wisely, but it's possible that the imperfect and the unwise also add fodder for the artist and the writer.

She writes Christian and Southern fiction as well as romantic suspense from her waterfront base in coastal North Carolina, where she lives with her husband, their two dogs, and a once-feral cat. If only her children and grandchildren lived within hailing distance, life would be just about perfect.

Fires of Injustice ~ Review

Fires of Injustice
America's Forgotten War
By Kendy Pearson

When this book opens, we are introduced to Avery and Cait Mitchell, missionaries to China who are being forced out of the country by the government. And it is in this touching and tragic scene that a pivotal moment takes place, one that forms a thread that subtlety weaves its way through the story and Yakira "Kira" Mitchell's life.

Yakira's life is devoted to freeing Chinese girls being ill-used in California's Chinatowns. But many factors are working against her-the men who have bought these girls and the anti-Chinese sentiments sweeping through California. It is amazing the prejudicial sentiments so prevalent against people who were wanted for the labor they performed yet degraded because of their differences.

Seven years ago, Grant Campbell walked away, no he ran away from his home, his family, his friends, his loss, and his guilt. But now he's back, trying to carry on his late father's work by defending Chinese immigrants who are being downtrodden and being presented as lesser people. He wants, yet dreads, reconnecting with his family and Yakira, yet he knows that it is long overdue.

In a place being torn apart by deep-seated fears and biases Yakira and Grant are brought together to fight for those who are denied a voice. But California is a powder keg waiting for someone to strike a match. The match has been struck and Grant and Yakira are in a race against time to keep it from being dropped in their fight to save the people they have come to care about deeply, physically and spiritually.

This is a book for fans of American Historical Fiction who enjoy reading about those who stand firm against injustice, no matter the personal cost. I highly recommend this book and personally look forward to more books from this author.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book

Title: Fires of Injustice
Series: America's Forgotten War
Author: Kendy Pearson
Publisher: Pear Blossom Books
Release Date: April 15, 2026
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction

"A story of resilience, redemption, and love, FIRES OF INJUSTICE blazes with the courage of those who dared to stand against the darkness."

She is fighting for the innocent.
He is fighting for a second chance.

Yakira Mitchell has devoted her life to rescuing the forgotten from the clutches of exploitation, and now her dream of opening a mission home for Chinese girls is within reach. But as anti-Chinese sentiments sweep through the West, Yakira finds herself at the center of a storm of hostility and prejudice. She is building a home for the broken, but her own foundation threatens to crumble with new revelations about her past.

Attorney Grant Campbell, the boy who once held Yakira’s heart, returns to San Francisco to atone for his past mistakes and face the secret that drove him away. He is determined to defend Chinese immigrants and to reconcile with his family and Yakira. But old feelings flare—and so do old wounds.

When flames of injustice consume communities, violence rages, and lives hang in the balance. As Yakira fights to protect her girls, she must face the truth of who she really is—and who God has called her to be.

In the ashes of hatred, Yakira and Grant both discover a love stronger than fear and a purpose forged in fire.

For fans of historical fiction and stories of resilience, FIRES OF INJUSTICE is inspired by real, untaught horrors of the Chinese Exclusion era—when towns forcibly erased entire communities by fire, expulsions, and boycotts.

Set just twenty years after the American Civil War, this gripping tale of resilience, romance, and courage reveals another dark chapter of division—and the light that defied it.

Falling for the Dark Mage ~ Review

Falling for the Dark Mage
To Win a Dark Heart
By Lucy Winton

Seraphina is a disappointment. She knows that in her mother's eyes, she is useless, with only skills in creative magic. Her mother plans to marry her off, only as a bride to a king is she of worth. Seraphina does not wish to marry to further her mother's cruel and criminal ways. She has plans, but then a mage on the run for cursing his prince is welcomed into her mother's criminal empire.

Damario is the missing ingredient in Phyllida's plans to control not only a criminal empire but the kingdoms around them. His curse was powerful, and she needed to create an unbreakable curse to expand her power.

But when Seraphina and Damario form a friendship, something shifts. Seraphina knows that her chance to escape her mother's clutches and plans may be thwarted.

This was a well-paced retelling that kept my attention from the opening scene. An engaging tale that is unique, with whispers of the originals woven together to create something new. Appropriate for teens and up, with nothing to cringe at in the romance department.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
A mage desperate to escape.
A stranger with a dark past.
An alliance that could free them both.

Seraphina is a disappointment. The daughter of a dark mage, she is unable to cast curses and can only create three charms. The sole way she can benefit her mother’s criminal empire is as a bride.

The first attempt ended badly, with her mother flying into a rage and cursing the reluctant groom to be frozen into his Bear form. Now Seraphina bides her time, practicing her Creative magic and waiting for her chance to escape.

When a newcomer arrives at the fortress, Seraphina’s mother takes a strong interest in his talents. On the run from cursing the crown prince of a neighboring kingdom, Damario could provide her dark mages with the one thing that’s missing from a curse they’re perfecting.

Seraphina’s escape plans are jeopardized when a familiar figure from her past appears. She is determined to leave the fortress, but can she manage it in time? And will Damario give Seraphina a reason to stay?

Falling for the Dark Mage is the eleventh book in the To Win a Dark Heart series, which retells fairytales as old as time, but this time it’s the villain’s turn to get a happy ending.

Through Smoke and Secrets ~ Review with Giveaway

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Through Smoke and Secrets by Rebecca Hemlock, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Through Smoke and Secrets
Through Smoke and Secrets
Dangerous Heirlooms #1
By Rebecca Hemlock

Suffer in silence and with grace; these words have been drilled into Eleanor Blackwood from an early age and marked her adult life. And in 1927, she was afraid and no one took her concerns seriously. After all women in her condition tended to become overwrought.

In the present day, Annie Whitaker is preparing to open her antiques shop, the culmination of three years of work. But suddenly everything including her life is in danger of being destroyed.

Annie's one hope of discovering the truth and surviving rests with Jack Calloway, a man from her past. A man, who with Annie's help, has a chance of unraveling a century old mystery that could claim Annie next. But can they hold something, a clue, that "could destroy a legacy built on blood and silence?"

Through Smoke and Secrets is a search for the truth in the face of mounting danger and long-held secrets. It is a story of second chances and faith. This is an engaging story and one that I wouldn't mind revisiting again. I look forward to exploring what comes next in this series.

Genre: Mystery Suspense

A century-old secret. A relentless enemy. One Locket that was never meant to be found.

When antiques dealer Annie Whitaker buys an unremarkable locket at a routine estate sale, she expects nothing more than a quiet ride home through the Smoky Mountains. Instead, a shadowy vehicle sends her car skidding off a cliffside road—and she realizes the attack was no accident. Hidden inside the locket is a key, a cryptic letter, and the first thread of a mystery tied to the disappearance of Eleanor Blackwood, a woman who vanished over a hundred years ago.

Someone has killed to keep that secret buried.

And now they’ve set their sights on Annie.

Her shop is ransacked. Her inventory destroyed. Her building intentionally set ablaze. With no phone, no transportation, and nowhere safe to go, Annie is forced to seek refuge in the only place left: the remote mountain ranch of Detective Jack Calloway, a man who once shared her obsession with cold cases—and who may be the only person she can trust.

As Jack digs into the evidence Annie uncovered, the danger spirals. Break-ins, threats, shadows stalking the ranch at night—each clue reveals a darker truth. The locket isn’t just a forgotten keepsake; it’s the final piece in a long-buried murder. And someone with power, reach, and generations of secrets will do whatever it takes to silence the truth forever.

With Annie marked as the next victim, Jack races to unravel a century of lies before time runs out. Every revelation tightens the noose around them both—and with Annie constantly in his line of fire, Jack’s focus fractures between the case and the woman he’s never been able to forget. The closer they come to exposing the killer, the more Jack realizes he may lose her long before the truth sees daylight. And every step forward draws them toward a final, deadly confrontation neither of them may survive.

About the Author

Rebecca Hemlock

Rebecca Hemlock is an award-winning Christian Fiction author whose love for mysteries began in childhood when she first fell in love with all things Nancy Drew. That early spark grew into a lifelong passion for crime-solving stories, complex puzzles, and characters who must fight for truth even when the world around them is dark and uncertain.

Her novels are known for realism, emotional depth, and suspense that stays tightly wound until the final pages. Rebecca creates characters who face danger, trauma, and moral crossroads — moments that either test their faith or ignite a brand-new relationship with God. At the heart of every story lies her guiding verse and creative compass, Romans 12:21: “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Before writing fiction full-time, Rebecca spent four years as a freelance journalist, where she honed her ability to spot the thread of a story, ask the right questions, and build tension from real-world details. That experience sharpened her voice and laid the foundation for the 15 books she has now published, ranging from romantic suspense and mystery to historical-tinged thrillers. She also writes children’s fiction under the pen name R.C. Burch.

Rebecca is an active member of American Christian Fiction Writers and Sisters in Crime, and she’s passionate about uplifting stories that blend danger, courage, heart, and hope. With a Bachelor’s degree in English and Creative Writing — plus an Appalachian Studies certificate — she brings layered settings, emotional authenticity, and cultural richness to her work. She continues to pursue further writing education, always seeking to grow as a storyteller.

When she’s not writing, Rebecca enjoys traveling, reading mysteries, exploring historical places, and spending time with her family. Her work is written for readers who love suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat — and faith that keeps you anchored through the storm.
