Edge of Truth ~ Review

Edge of Truth
By Janice Cantore
Narrated by Jeannie Sheneman

Fifteen years ago, Lainie Jensen made an arrest that she thought was a career changing moment. It was but not in the way she imagined. And when an opportunity to again bring this criminal to justice occurs, the FBI in the form of Special Agent Ben Issacs swoops in cutting Lainie out.

Soon Lainie has bigger worries when her sister Evie goes missing in Hawaii. And the story her brother-in-law is selling, well Lainie isn't buying it.

When Ben Isaacs shows up in Hawaii, well, let's just say Ben's case and missing partner are about to converge with Lainie's suspicions and her past case-gone-bad. And someone seems determined to keep them from discovering the truth. But what is the truth and how does it link to Lainie's missing sister. Lainie can't help but wonder just what and who will be left when the dust settles, because it is obvious someone is targeting her family.

With her life at a low, Lainie reconnects with the Savior she pushed out of her life years ago. Loss has given her a different perspective on events from the past. And now she has no one else to turn to who can give her the answers she seeks, and she is tired of regrets.

The narration of this book was good, though like most audiobooks I did speed up the playback to 1.3. The overall feel pulled me into the story, and the twists were well presented, though I guessed the big one right away. Overall, I felt engaged by the story throughout.

About the Book:
One case almost destroyed her career.
Now the past seems to have caught up with her.
And as a high-stakes game of truth and lies unfolds,
someone's out for retribution at any cost.

As a detective in the Long Beach Police Department's violent crimes division, Lainie Jensen is no stranger to hard-to-crack cases and unusual disappearances, but then her sister Evie vanishes on a trip to Hawaii. After traveling there to look for her, Lainie quickly realizes her brother-in-law Stan is telling law enforcement a story that doesn't appear to add up.

FBI special agent Ben Isaacs has spent six months collecting evidence to take down a money laundering operation. While his fellow agent Efren Gomez goes undercover to infiltrate the ring, Ben investigates those connected to it, including Stan Moffitt, who Ben believes could help lead to the criminal kingpin. Then Stan's wife goes missing just days after Ben contacted her seeking information, and he knows there's more to this case, especially when he loses contact with Efren and law enforcement comes up short in their search for him.

When Ben's and Lainie's investigations converge, Lainie's not eager to work alongside Ben given their complicated history, but she's willing to do so if it means figuring out what Stan knows and locating Evie. Soon, Lainie can't deny Ben's dedication to finding the truth or her growing admiration for him. And the more the two examine the evidence, the more they suspect Evie's disappearance is tied to a highly publicized criminal case from Lainie's past . . . and someone is playing a perilous game aimed at personal revenge.

Deadly Currents ~ Review

Deadly Currents
Hidden Bay #3
By Elizabeth Goddard

Cressida Dane is trying to complete the book her father was researching when he was killed. She has his notes, at least most of them, and Hidden Bay is next on her list. But hidden danger awaits and she is soon being protected by Braden Sanders, a county detective, who has his own closely guarded secret.

But the danger that hunts Cressida is of the deadly variety and could be tied to her own father's death. Worse, whoever is behind the attacks on Cressida seems determined to not only stop her research but to end her life. The question is why? Why would someone care about research concerning lost ships? As Cressida and Braden search for answers the danger only grows as do their feelings for one another. But Braden knows once Cressida learns the truth, she'll never forgive him.

This book opens with the danger present, and it slowly builds throughout the story leaving one in doubt as to the identity of just who is out to stop Cressida and why. Deadly Rodeo Threat ~ Review

Deadly Rodeo Threat
Stone Creek Ranch #2
By Sami A. Abrams

Her best friend went missing but there is no evidence that she didn't leave voluntarily. When a report of a found body leads Sheriff Isabelle Sinclair to an isolated location, she finds more than she expected.

Logan Russell has returned home to help find his missing twin sister. His arrival is just in time to save Izzie from an assailant who seems intent on seeing her dead.

Is the attack on Izzie related to her search for Lisa? Or is it something more sinister? Soon they are finding information that points to more than one missing woman. Logan and Izzie are soon caught in a race against time and a potential serial killer to find Lisa.

This is an intense what's going to happen next read. Both Logan and Izzie have past issues that find them dealing with these as they work together to find Lisa. I totally LOVED Shadow, Logan's service dog - a goofball until he needed to work. Dogs make stories better, in my opinion. But the ending is just "whoa!" and not because there are horses in the book. The villain is truly creepy in his actions, just saying.

This is a book of second chances and new beginnings. They just need to stop a killer first. This book, being a Love Inspired Suspense offering, is non-graphic in its descriptions, so nightmare material to keep you up all night.

I was provided with a complimentary copy with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

On the Edge of Trust ~ Review

On the Edge of Trust book front cover features woman with dark blond hair blowing across face
On the Edge of Trust
A Logan Point Novel
By Patricia Bradley

Tori Mitchell has avoided home and her father for years. She can't get past the part he played in her mother's death. But when her teenage nephew finds himself on the wrong side of a murder investigation, Tori returns to Logan Point.

Tori is dedicated to finding justice for those she feels were wrongly charged with a crime and found guilty. Over the years, she's ruffled a few feathers. Now she finds the occasional threat has actually become a reality. In addition to helping her nephew, she will also hide out from the person who seems intent on stopping her current investigation. And if her current investigation leads her back home to Logan Point, so much the better.

What she didn't expect was for danger to follow her home and endanger her family. Nor did she expect to reconnect with Scott Sinclair. With her life in danger, Scott is unofficially asked to help protect her, but with an injury that has him unable to use his right hand, Tori is skeptical of his usefulness. But to keep her family safe she agrees to the plan.

On the Edge of Trust is a page turning read. Yes, this was a late night/early morning read that had me guessing up until the reveal as to the identity of the guilty party. The old adage about webs of lies leading to problems is so true. Adding to this is Tori's unforgiveness and her belief that people cannot change, which has damaged her relationship with her family. Overall this was an engaging and action-filled book. Reading the previous books in the Logan Point series is not necessary to enjoy this book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Sometimes the closer you get to justice,
the deadlier it becomes

When decorated FBI undercover agent Scott Sinclair suffers a gunshot wound in his right arm, the injury threatens his future career in the field. He is determined to regain his former job by training himself to use his left hand, and failure is not an option--especially when he's unofficially pulled into an investigation.

Tori Mitchell is a passionate crime reporter and podcaster who has dedicated her life to seeking justice. Her relentless pursuit of the truth has freed a wrongfully convicted man from prison, making Tori an enemy of the true killer. When her nephew is accused of a different murder, nothing can stop her from getting involved and clearing his name.

Soon after Tori and Scott reconnect on the case, shots are fired, leaving them to wonder which of them has been targeted. As the investigation intensifies, so do the threats and the sparks between them, but Tori's doubtful if she can extend grace and trust to Scott. They'll have to combine their skills and rely on their growing relationship to outsmart the killer.

Perfect for fans of Lynette Eason, Lynn H. Blackburn, Elizabeth Goddard, and readers who love faith-based fiction and edge-of-your-seat thrillers, this riveting, clean romantic suspense delivers heart-pounding danger and forced-proximity romance.

Snowbound Threat ~ Review

Cover of Snowbound Threat a multi-author collection of Christian Romantic Suspense holiday stories
Snowbound Threat
Do You Hear What I Hear
By Lisa Phillips, Mary Alford, and Jessica Ashley

This collection will keep you up reading late into the night. Each of the three stories has links to the past that cloud the who-dun-it aspects. But investigating the past brings the danger into the present with lives on the line.

In Home a DEA mission gone wrong when traitors frame him, finds Caleb Rourke hiding out at his grandfather's home. What Caleb didn't expect was getting his grandpa and Tessa Langley, the girl next door caught up in his mess. Lives are on the line and long held secrets come to light in this page turner. And there are plenty of secrets. Now I need a story about Caleb's twin brother Noah!

In Silent Snowfall Secrets Charlie Wells comes home following the unexpected death of her grandfather. But what she finds are the ghosts of her past that had her fleeing Pine Haven all those years ago. But some secrets aren't meant to remain buried forever. But someone is determined to do just that. I was definitely kept in the dark as to who was the killer. Let's just say the suspense was kept at a high throughout.

In Critical Velocity Beckett Wallace has spent the last ten years convinced that her late husband was murdered. With information, new but vague she sets out to discover the truth behind her husband's death. But to do so, she must reach out to Detective Shawn Sampson, whom she battled against in the past. Will Shawn work with the woman he hasn't heard from in years? And was the information she was given legit? And why now after ten years?  Another page turner high in suspense with hints of potential romance.

This is great way to experience the works of three author in one book. Perfect if you need something with plenty of suspense and a pinch or two of romance. Nothing overly graphic in regard to the suspense department to give you nightmares. And the romance is on the sweet side with a touch of angst.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are mine own.

Determined to protect her, Caleb confronts the secrets his own parents concealed for years. Together, they must rely on their faith, each other, and a God who sees what remains hidden. This Christmas isn’t just about the holiday—it’s about the future they could build together.

Silent Snowfall Secrets - Mary Alford
In the snowbound town of Pine Haven, Colorado, Charlie Wells returns home to settle her uncle’s estate—and stumbles into a chilling mystery. Wasted ~ Review

Wasted
Windy City Westons #2
By Jerusha Agen

Victoria Weston's life starts falling apart when she tries to convince the police that her patient was murdered. But the detective in charge is less than thrilled with what he considers Victoria's interference in what he considers a clear accident. The only person to encourage her to follow this path of thinking is Cillian Doherty, her newest coworker and her high school crush.

When Victoria's life is threatened and she finds herself on the wrong side of the law, she finds her tight control over her life slipping. What's worse, she's upsetting her father and not the perfect example that her younger siblings need her to be. And she knows that the more she works with Cillian on this case, the harder it will be to make her father happy and keep her heart safe.

Wasted is the second book in the Windy City Westons series, which is a study of family dynamics. I love how Victoria's brothers and sisters rally around her in support and to help her find the truth about the death of her patient. There is a definite whodunit throughout this book. And the ending is just WOW! I love Victoria's dog, Max, and would love to get his backstory.  Books are always better with dogs. This book can be read as a standalone title if you have not read the first book.

I was provided with a complimentary copy with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

She always follows the rules. But what are the rules for murder?

Victoria Weston encounters tough things as a home health physical therapist, but this is a first—a dead body. The police call the patient's death accidental. Victoria knows that can't be true. Her efforts to convince the police they're dealing with murder get her labeled a troublemaker by all but one man—the troubler of her youth.

When Cillian Doherty returns to right the wrongs of the past, he finds his high school flame in a different kind of danger than he expected. As a social worker, he's in the perfect position to corroborate her cry of murder or give her what she wanted—to handle her problems without his help.

But someone wants to silence Victoria. When lies escalate to violence and threaten more lives, the Weston siblings join the battle to save their sister. But it will take a God more powerful than all of them for Cillian and Victoria to make peace with their past and catch the killer. Before the killer catches them.

Wasted continues the thrilling Windy City Westons series, featuring five siblings who encounter danger, love, and God in the city of Chicago. (Each book can stand alone or be read as a series installment.)

Final Approach ~ Review

Final Approach
Lake City Heroes #4
By Lynette Eason

Kristine Duncan is about to enjoy a vacation with her friends. She just needs to finish this flight as the onboard air marshal, and she'll be free to relax. But then everything goes wrong as a passenger attempts to hijack the plane she's on. R&R is on hold as Kristine and her friends investigate just what happened, because something is just not adding up.

The deeper Kristine and FBI Special Agent Andrew Ross dig, the more it becomes apparent that someone is targeting one of them. All the clues seem to point to Andrew's past as an undercover agent. But how does this relate to the hijacking?

Final Approach is an intricate and deceptive mystery that has so many twists that you won't be able to easily determine who the mastermind is. And there is cheesecake, lots of it, you may want to have a slice or two on hand, because it's cheesecake. I recommend getting a couple of flavors or a sampler. This book was definitely a late-night, just-one-more-chapter read. I recommend it for Friday night if you don't get a Saturday shift. And the "villain"? Wowzers! That's all I'm saying. It is a must-read, top of the TBR stack book if you love Romantic Suspense.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
She's intent on investigating a sinister plot of revenge, and it will take all her courage to survive.

Air Marshal Kristine Duncan is not on duty when a hijacker attempts to seize control of the plane she and her friends are on as they head out on a much-needed vacation. Jumping into action and aided by FBI Special Agent Andrew Ross, Kristine thwarts the attack and the plane lands safely. But as the investigation into the incident gets underway, Kristine and Andrew are confused at every step. Nothing about the investigation goes as it should, and each layer they peel back just reveals another layer of perplexity.

As the two work together to navigate a web of deception, blame, and personal reckoning, they find there's more to this story than meets the eye--and more to love and admire about each other. They'll have to put their skills to the test--and their hearts on the line--to unravel the truth and ensure that justice prevails.

Shadowed Witness ~ Review

Shadowed Witness
The Secrets of Kincaid #2
By Angela Carisle

Shadowed Witness front cover art
Allye Jessup knows what she saw and what she experienced. But other than the bruising on her neck there is no evidence to the brutal beating she witnessed. She saw a murder, at least she thinks she did. And with her recent memory issues she is beginning to doubt herself.

The Kincaid police department investigates Allye's claims but they have no evidence to coroborate her claims - no body, no signs of a struggle, and a witness statement that throws doubt on her story. Detective Eric Thornton is the lone dectective in Kincaid and he is overwhelmed at present with other cases. But when it becomes apparent that something is going on and Allye might be in danger, Eric will do everything in his power to keep her safe.

And with all engaging romantic suspense reads, there are secrets that both Allye and Eric are keeping that naturally stand in their way of finding love. And the secrets they are keeping are real doozies. Yeah, so some serious baggage to deal with. As for the ne'er-do-well responsible for the whole mess that Allye and Eric find themselves in, that is a whole other mess with some interesting twists that totally blindsided me. The climax was truly a climax.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Murder—that’s what photographer Allye Jessup knows she witnessed as she departed her studio one evening. Waking with bruises on her neck and a foggy memory, she believes she survived an attack, but everyone seems to think she simply sustained a head injury from falling down the stairs of her studio. Plagued by an undiagnosed health condition, she is torn between the haunting reality of what she may have seen and the possibility that her mind is playing tricks on her.

Without proof the other victim ever existed, Detective Eric Thornton can hardly declare the area a murder scene. Still, he adds Allye’s report to his already full caseload. But when new evidence surfaces to support her claims, Eric must stay one step ahead of a ruthless killer and uncover the truth before the suspect closes in on Allye again.

Angela Carlisle once again presents cutting-edge romantic suspense laced with danger, deception, and justice.

Capturing You ~ Review and IG Giveaway

Capturing You book cover
Capturing You
The Wright Heroes of Maine #6
By Robin Patchen

This book is definitely a grumpy/sunshine romantic suspense that will keep you guessing at who is guilty of what.

Forbes Ballentine's been hiding most of his life, but now he's seeking answers. Brooklynn Wright was seeking the photograph of a lifetime, but instead, she's running for her life. They will need to work together to discover the truth if they want to survive. But with years of deception between them and the answers they seek, the killers just may get away with murder again.

The deeper Forbes and Brooklyn dig, the more they unearth that Brooklyn's trusting personality won't be able to deny. Someone in Shadow Cove, someone she knows, is a murderer, and they are targeting her. The perfect photograph may cost her her life if they don't discover who committed murder all those years ago.

I have to be honest, there were some twists I didn't see coming. Small town living in Shadow Cove is not high on my list of places in books I'd like to live. My visits will be strictly via the printed page - it seems safer and spider-free. Yeah, I can't like spiders. But overall, this was an edge-of-your-seat read, especially the climax.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book, with no expectations other than to provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Echoes of Darkness
By Darlene L. Turner

Constable Oaklynn Brock is hiding from her past in a small community in northern Ontario when she gets word of her father's death. Now it seems her past has caught up to her when a serial killer decides the community will be his target. Are these the work of a copycat who randomly selected Kenorapeake Falls? Or was Oaklynn's hidden past the draw?

With the cases mounting, the Canadian Watchers Squad is tasked with helping the local police department. Caleb Greene has a special understanding of cults, and the deaths in Kenorapeake Falls have cult written all over them. But to get to the truth, he'll have to confront his own demons.

Echoes of Darkness offers a behind-the-scenes look into cults while delving into the mind of a serial killer. I know it's super uplifting, but as Oaklynn and Caleb work through their doubts and fears, hope is offered that no one is too broken to get a new start in the eyes of God. A powerful and moving promise.

Of note: murder, suicide, stalking, kidnapping, animal sacrifice, and abuse either take place or are mentioned. Nothing overly graphic is portrayed, but it could be a trigger for sensitive individuals.

Missing in Texas ~ Review

Missing in Texas
Lone Star Defenders #2
By Virginia Vaughan

Twelve years ago, Dawn went missing in Mercy, Texas. FBI Agent Christy Williams is determined to crack her college roommate's cold case, and she finally feels qualified to attempt to do so. She knows who committed the crime, she just needs to prove it. There is just the issue of evidence, and Deputy Mike Tyner, who believes his cousin is innocent.

But Christy refuses to let Mike's belief color her investigation. Now Mike has to hope that she won't make the evidence fit her preconceived conclusions. With more than a decade standing between them and the crime, finding new evidence won't be easy.

But her official investigation has rattled something when she starts getting threats. Can Mike and Christy get the answers they seek before their investigation gets shut down by a killer who will do anything to get away with murder?

Christy is convinced that Mike can't be objective, which is a bit laughable in a kettle calling the pot black sort of way, as she comes in convinced of who did it. But overall, this is a good story. Both Mike and Christy are driven by the guilt they feel over the incident, which is a motivating factor in their drive to solve this case.

There are some moments of suspense as the killer moves in. But nothing over the top. The romance is clean, and this isn't a book that has any cringeworthy moments. There are some faith moments that will resonate with readers as the danger becomes all too real for Christy and Mike.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Two Seconds Too Late ~ Review

Two Seconds Too Late
Jeopardy Falls #2
By Dani Pettrey

However, at times, her actions drive fellow investigator Greyson Chadwick to distraction. He worries she could get herself killed.

Unless her brothers get in the way, being older and protective of her. And then there is that whole not getting killed business.

Fans of Dani Pettrey's previous works will not be disappointed. The suspense will keep you reading way too late, so plan to take a vacation day soon. Once you start reading, you won't want to put this one down. Did I mention romance? Because there is that. Two Seconds Too Late can be read and fully enjoyed even if you have not read the first book, One Wrong Move.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion.  All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

A missing woman. Two hit men. When every second counts, who will survive?

In the stark but beautiful wilds of northern New Mexico, a luxury spa and couple’s retreat turns into a chilling nightmare when a woman vanishes without a trace, just hours after a public fight with her boyfriend. Worried something sinister has happened, her friends reach out to investigator Riley MacLeod, an expert skip tracer, for help. The assignment means going undercover at the retreat, which means pairing up with private investigator Greyson Chadwick. Their partnership ignites a tumultuous mix of attraction and distrust as Riley’s unorthodox methods clash with Greyson’s meticulous approach.

As they delve deeper into the case and a ruthless hitman is unleashed upon them, Riley and Greyson find themselves fighting not only for justice but for their very survival. Staying one step ahead of danger, the pair discovers a hidden truth that rocks them to the core. In their race against the clock, they can only hope that they’re not too late.

With her signature pulse-pounding twists, Dani Pettrey weaves a gripping tale of love and survival in the face of unimaginable danger.

Waylaid ~ Review

Waylaid
Windy City Westons #1
By Jerusha Agen

Spring Weston is a rising star in the world of cycling, and she's determined to be the best. But when she learns the truth about the team she's on, she doesn't want anything to do with it. But before she can decide what she will do, her whole life is shattered. She's the victim of a hit-and-run accident.

Spring is officially the Weston family failure. Her father's biggest disappointment. She'll never ride a bike again. No, she's trapped by her broken body. If only the driver had killer her, then she would have at least not been left to endure her father's disgust and the pity of others.

Sergeant Torin Cotter has let people down too many times. He knows the feeling of such failure. When he is asked to take over the investigation of Spring's case, something just feels off to him. He can tell Spring is holding something back and that she is scared. Torin will discover the truth and do all he can to help Spring.

When his own past comes into play during his investigation, Spring may offer the only hope to overcome his pain. If only he could offer her the same. But he refuses to allow himself to connect with Spring. It's all about surviving until he learns the truth about his wife.

When a killer comes after Spring, Torin is determined to protect her, while Spring is more concerned about anyone losing their lives for her.

Waylaid is the first book in the Windy City Westons series. The Weston family siblings are focused on helping Spring overcome and conquer her depression over the fallout of the hit-and-run that left her paralyzed. I found it interesting how the family dynamics played out throughout this book. They had differences when it came to matters of faith, but they were all about loyalty to one another. No one messed with one of their own without the others rallying around them. The dynamics between the Westons came across as authentic and believable. This was an excellent and engaging read that kept me up way too late reading. The suspense was way too tempting. I wanted to know who and why, and it was definitely not what I was expecting.

About the Book:

Someone wants to kill her. She wants the killer to finish the job.

Spring Weston will do anything to rise in the ranks of pro cycling and prove she isn’t the one failure of the five Weston siblings. Anything except cheat. When she learns of doping on her cycling team, she’s determined to uncover the truth. But she can’t if she’s dead.

Sergeant Torin Cotter may not be the hero the public thinks he is, but he recognizes fear when he sees it. When he takes over the investigation of the collision that landed Spring in the hospital, he’s compelled to protect her from whatever danger she’s in, even though he knows he might fail. Again.

Spring’s faith in God isn’t enough to help her face the living nightmare she awakened to after the accident. But neither she nor the handsome sergeant see the greater threat that’s coming until it’s too late.

If they’re going to survive, Spring and Torin will not only have to confront their worst fears—they’ll have to find a reason to live.

Shattered Sanctuary ~ Review

Shattered Sanctuary
The Erin Delaney Mysteries #1
By Nancy Mehl

Erin Delaney has cut herself off from everyone who she used to know. Guilt and PTSD have controlled her since an on-the-job incident changed her life. She's now a former police officer and a best-selling author. But joy is missing and hope is nonexistent. When her online friend, Kaely Quinn-Hunter, a former FBI behavioral analyst, invites her to spend time at a secluded cabin, Erin doesn't jump at the chance, but she does agree to come.

The cabin is secluded and has a somewhat disturbing past, a past that makes for some unsettling moments which add to the suspense. But the real problem comes when Erin and Kaely are drawn into a case involving a potential serial killer. Rest and relaxation and deep discussions are no longer their only focus.

At the behest of local police chief Adrian Nightengale, Erin and Kaely put their skills to work. Can they stop a killer before he, or she, strikes again? Their lives and the community of Sanctuary depend on them outsmarting the killer.

This is the first book in the Erin Delaney Mystery series, and it is packed full of suspense. With a winter storm bearing down on them, time is a luxury they don't have. There are some difficult issues that are tackled in this book, but they are handled in a compassionate manner. Hurting people need to heal, and sometimes it isn't easy for them to ask for or accept help. Excellent reading and I look forward to the next book in the series.
