70 North JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz
Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for

70 North

70 North
Alaskan Cyber Hunters #3
By Kimberley Woodhouse

They thought he was dead. But they were wrong. He has been biding his time, preparing for his final attack when he would get rid of the corrupt leadership. He sees the truth of everything in a way no one else is capable of. And he won't let David MacPherson stop him. No, he'll taunt the man determined to bring him down. Destroying those around him merely for the thrill of it.

Mac will never stop his search for the man who killed his wife and daughter during a cyberattack on Fairbanks. With the help of his friends at Cyber Solutions, "Griz" will lose. But they will have to help Tracie Hunter restore her reputation. A reputation destroyed because she saved Mac's life after he was shot.

But how do you stop a delusional, highly intelligent psychopath? That's a question they will have to answer before Griz unleashes his "final judgment."

This was an intriguing series conclusion. I felt that the first few chapters dragged. But once the story got into, it picked up and became the page turner I was expecting. I will admit the very possibility of this even being a thing is more than a little scary, which I think added to the suspense of the read. This series must be read in order to fully experience it. Skipping a book is not an option, as each builds on the one before.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense and thrillers. This is not a book to be read late at night unless you plan to avoid sleeping because you won't want to put it down once you start.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book

Title: 70 North
Series: Alaskan Cyber Hunters #3
Author: Kimberley Woodhouse
Publisher: Kregel Publications
Release Date: October 15, 2024
Genre: Christian Mystery & Suspense

The Cyber Solutions team has managed to stay one step ahead of the madman who has killed so many. From the original 26 Below cyberattack in Fairbanks to the 8 DOWN serial murders in Anchorage and beyond, they matched wits with the killer and stopped him from reaching his ultimate goals.

But final judgment is coming. And this time, there may be no defeating him.

David "Mac" McPherson has a personal stake in making sure this predator stays down for good. His family died in the cyberattack. Mac knows that God says "vengeance is mine"—but surely an exception can be made.

Surgeon Tracie Hunter is determined to stay sober and keep saving lives in Fairbanks, Alaska—even if it means being a little obsessive. After all, that same kind of determination is how she kept Mac alive after the murderer targeted him. And she won't let Mac run himself into the grave looking for payback; he's come to mean too much to her.

Then someone hacks into the system at Tracie's previous job as a medical examiner and frames her in a murder cover-up. There's no one else skilled enough to create a digital trail this incriminating—the killer is back in action, exploiting cybersecurity weaknesses to destroy lives. Can Mac stay focused and stop the next attack when his own vulnerability is exposed? Or will his need to make someone pay for his pain allow the maniac to pull ahead and win at last?

I Dream a Dream For You ~ Review

I Dream a Dream for You
By Bob Hostetler
Illustrated by Benedetta Capriotti

When it comes to books for young children, the illustrations are as important, if not more so, than the story. And when the two come together to present a lovely and charming story, it is even better.

This is a bedtime story for children about a parent's dreams and prayers for their child. It hopes that the child will live a morally upright and godly life that helps those in need and enjoys the world around them.

I love the illustrations. They are colorful and perfectly accompany the story.  And I love all the cute animals; the facial expressions really allow little ones to grasp and understand the story better.

In my opinion, this story is appropriate for those aged 6 years and younger. Older children may enjoy it, but I think this is geared towards the youngest readers/listeners.

I was provided a complimentary digital copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Alaskan Cyber Hunters #2
By Kimberley Woodhouse

First off, this is the second book in the Alaskan Cyber Hunters series, and you absolutely must read 26 Below first!

This book opens right at the conclusion of book one before jumping us forward in time. An unexplained problem with traffic lights results in a fatal collision. Okay, traffic lights have a problem; it's not unheard of. But it is something far worse—this is just the beginning of a cyber attack on the Alaskan capital city of Anchorage.

The man behind the cyberattack in Fairbanks has turned his attention to Anchorage, and his plans are pure evil. Teetering on the edge of genius and insanity, he has no qualms about taunting the ABI (Alaska Bureau of Investigation) and the state of Alaska. And he's leaving them clues in crossword puzzles.

Investigator Carrie Kintz is fairly new to the job, and she never expected to be given the role of lead investigator of such an important case. And the killer has decided to taunt her and call her out as his killings continue. Ouch!

Well, the ABI is understaffed and needs to call in a cybersecurity expert and Scott Patteson gets the call. A call that will test his skills. And his efforts aren't about to be ignored by their UNSUB.

Get ready for some intense reading as the stakes are about to go higher. This book continues the edge of danger from the first book and this book will keep you turning the pages far too late into the night. Can they stop a killer who is using technology to do his killing? And how do you even attempt to think like a mind so twisted that it enjoys terrorizing its victims in their last moments?  Time is running out!

8 bodies down.

8 more lives at stake.

Investigator Carrie Kintz is new blood with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation in Anchorage. But with a serial killer on the loose, there's no easing into the job. It's sink or swim. The only clues to help law enforcement stop this madman are the taunts he drops into crossword puzzles across the country--always in the same 8 DOWN position.

Carrie is desperate to prove her worth to the force and the community by catching the killer. But when she discovers signs that these deaths are just the tip of the iceberg in a frighteningly elaborate cyberattack, it's time to admit she needs help.

Calling in security specialist Scott Patteson for his expertise seems like the right move--until Carrie realizes that he may be a dangerous distraction for her heart. With her faith fading in the face of horror and uncertainty and her career in danger of ending, this is no time for flirtation.

But with a killer who is determined to prove that he's smarter than everyone else, it may be impossible to fight both the madman and their feelings for each other...

Midnight's Budding Morrow ~ Review with Excerpt and Giveaway

Midnight's
Budding Morrow
Regency Wallflowers #2
By Carolyn Miller

Midnight's Budding Morrow is the second book in Carolyn Miller's Regency Wallflowers series. Now if you haven't read the first book in the series that will in no way affect or reading or enjoyment of this book. And if you love your Regency fiction with a touch of Gothic intrigue you will want to move this one up to the top of your Summer TBR list - yes, it is that good. I have read all of Carolyn Miller's Regency fiction from Kregel and have never been disappointed and, in my opinion, each has been better than the previous book.

But I'm sure you want to learn more about the story that this delightful cover adorned. First off, we meet Sarah Drayton, who is an orphan from a good family, just not one of wealth or title. At the urging of her dearest friend Beatrice Langley, Sarah is about to visit the Langley home in Northumberland. There is just one little problem with her visit with Beatrice. Bea's brother James, with whom Sarah recently had a most uncomfortable public encounter, has come home, begging funds from his father. But to get the funds for his accumulating debts James must marry a woman of his father's choosing. Unfortunately, for James and Sarah, Sarah is the chosen bride.

Sarah is determined to make the best of the situation she finds herself in. She is going to make a place for herself on the Langley estate but the staff and neighbors see her as a less than desirable addition to the family, the home, and the community. How can she improve the home she has been given if she is given little to no respect. And when her husband returns from war will he still hold her in disdain?

James knows his father blames him for the loss of his mother. And then there is the drinking and gambling that find him causing public disgrace, as his first meeting with Sarah aptly proves. Is it possible to repair the damage he has caused or will he stay trapped in this endless cycle of dependence?

Not to give away anything that will detract from your enjoyment of the book but there are a couple of secondary characters that are just Uggggggghhhh! Superior attitude, cruel streak, and just overall unlikeable.

Overall this was a highly enjoyable book, but I will admit I did need tissue for a scene or two. So I would recommend this for home reading and not your lunch break at work.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion ~ all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Can real love grow between a wallflower and an unrepentant rogue?

Sarah Drayton is eager to spend time with her best friend at her crumbling Northumberland castle estate. Matrimony is the last thing on her mind and the last thing she expects to be faced with on a holiday. Yet she finds herself being inveigled into a marriage of convenience with her friend's rakish brother.

When James Langley returns to his family's estate, he can't be bothered to pay attention to his responsibilities as the heir. War is raging and he wants only distraction, not serious tethers. But his roguish ways have backed him into a corner, and he has little choice but to obey his father's stunning decree: marry before returning to war, or else. Suddenly he finds himself wedded to a clever and capable woman he does not love.

Sarah craves love and a place to belong, neither of which James offered before returning to the battlefront. Now everyone around her thinks she married above her station, and they have no intention of rewarding her for such impertinence. It isn't until her husband returns from war seemingly changed that she begins to hope they may find real happiness. But can she trust that this rake has truly reformed?

When tragedy strikes, this pair must learn to trust God and his plans. Will they be destroyed . . . or will they discover that even in the darkest depths of night, the morning still holds hope?

About the Series:
While most stories set in Regency England focus on the rich, the young, and the beautiful, award-winning author Carolyn Miller decided she wanted to give readers something different for a change. Her new Regency Wallflowers series follows the commoners, away from the hustle and bustle of 1810s London, out in the Lake District of England. She tells the stories of women who are slightly older and have few prospects for marriage, women who might be considered “wallflowers.”

Midnight’s Budding Morrow is the second book in the Regency Wallflowers series. The first book in the series is Dusk’s Darkest Shores.

About the Author:
Carolyn Miller is an inspirational romance author who lives in the beautiful Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, with her husband and four children.

Counterfeit Love ~ Review with Giveaway and Interview

Counterfeit Love
Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age #1
By Crystal Caudill

Six years ago Broderick Cosgrove broke Theresa Plane's heart, leaving her with no word of why he was leaving her to her Grandfather's military precision. Theresa's life has changed from one of wealth to one of struggling to stay ahead of her Grandfather's creditors. And his creditors are not going to be put off for much longer and are the kind to get what is owed to them in any way they can.

Broderick's undercover work finds him getting deeper into a counterfeit ring - a ring that if they are allowed to continue could undermine the economy of the United States and push the country into another depression. What Broderick never expected was to find Theresa smack dab in the middle of his case. Is she a part of the ring he has been infiltrating? Or is she just an innocent victim caught up in their web? Broderick is determined to find out and save her if at all possible. but is he willing to risk the case, his career, and his life for the woman he once hoped and planned to marry?

This is the first book in the Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series and if what is to come is anything like this first book it will prove to be an excellent series and one not to be missed. This is Historical Romantic Suspense and it will hold and keep your interest. Excellent reading and well-developed characters make for an unputdownable experience that you will want to continue well beyond the last page. Crystal Caudill is soon to become one of your favorite authors with this debut.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Can this undercover agent save the woman he loves
--or
is her heart as counterfeit as the money he's been sent to track down?

After all that Grandfather has sacrificed to raise her, Theresa Plane owes it to him to save the family name--and that means clearing their debt with creditors before she marries Edward Greystone. But when one of the creditors' threats leads her to stumble across a midnight meeting, she discovers that the money he owes isn't all Grandfather was hiding. And the secrets he kept have now trapped Theresa in a life-threatening fight for her home--and the truth.

After months of undercover work, Secret Service operative Broderick Cosgrove is finally about to uncover the identity of the leader of a notorious counterfeiting ring. That moment of triumph turns to horror, however, when he finds undeniable proof that his former fiance is connected. Can he really believe the woman he loved is a willing participant? Protecting Theresa and proving her innocence may destroy his career--but that's better than failing her twice in one lifetime.

They must form a partnership, tentative though it is. But there's no question they're both still keeping secrets--and that lack of trust, along with the dangerous criminals out for their blood, threatens their hearts, their faith, and their very survival.

Author Interview:

Q: What situation does Theresa find herself in, through no fault of her own? Or is she really as innocent in everything going on around her?

A: Various betrayals work against Theresa throughout her history and present, not the least of which is the betrayal from her grandfather. While their debt developed through a combination of poor business choices, her misadventures, and reoccurring illness, it is ultimately his handling of that debt that leaves Theresa fighting for her home and her future. She is innocent of his poor choices, yet she is the one to pay the consequences and have her reputation clouded by a suspicion of criminal acts.

Even though Theresa is innocent of any criminal involvement, she is not innocent in all things. Like everyone else, she is responsible for her reactions and choices. Through her experiences growing up and now reenforced by Grandfathers betrayal, Theresa has learned to be self-reliant and rarely listens to the wise counsel of those around her. Unfortunately, her self-reliant decisions compound her problems, and her situation grows from dangerous to dire.

Q: We think of the Secret Service today as the men and women in black suits within a certain perimeter protecting the President, but what was the original purpose of the Secret Service?

A: I find the early days of the Secret Service incredibly fascinating and somewhat shrouded from public view. Most are familiar with their current black-suit role, but the Secret Service didn’t start unofficial part-time protection of the President until 1894, almost thirty years after their creation. While April 14, 1865, is most well-known for Abraham Lincolns assassination, it was also the date Abraham Lincoln authorized Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCullough to create an organization whose sole purpose was to thwart the counterfeiting of U.S. currency. At that point in history, it is estimated that one-third of all circulating currency was counterfeit, and an unstable currency is a menace to the health and economy of a nation.

On July 5, 1865, William P. Wood was sworn in as the first Chief (now called Director) of the U.S. Secret Service. The organizations first decade was fraught with questionable practices, scandal, and a negative public image. In the mid-1870s, policies and procedures were changed, but they remained an organization with little power on their own. They required the partnership of local police or U.S. Marshalls to make arrests, obtain warrants, and conduct searches. The challenges they faced were incredible and so fascinating. In 1867, their umbrella of investigations expanded beyond counterfeiting to include any frauds against the government. Some examples are investigating the Ku Klux Klan, nonconforming distillers, smugglers, mail robbers, land frauds, and so much more. However, it wasn’t until President McKinleys assassination in 1901 that Congress requested official full-time Secret Service protection of U.S. presidents, and it was 1902 before the Secret Service assumed that duty. I could literally spend hours talking about the history of the Secret Service because I love it so much. In fact, I created a section on my website to share some of the information that wouldn’t fit into my story for those who are interested.

Q: Counterfeit Love is the first in a series. Can you give us a tease of what to expect as the Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series continues?

A: In book two, Counterfeit Hope, readers will get a surprising view of Andrew Darlington—an operative who has little tact and tends to see things in black in white. Readers and the heroine will discover that hes not quite the man he appears to be and is worthy of the title hero. However, hes been harboring a secret from his superiors. He spent his childhood as a member of a criminal family before being adopted by his arresting officer. When a case brings him face-to-face with his former family, his character comes into question despite all hes done to earn his sterling reputation. Matters only worsen when the woman who captures his attention—and possibly his affections—is the wrong kind of woman for a Secret Service operative. A pickpocket and former prostitute.

In book three, Counterfeit Faith, Josiah Isaacss charming ways get put to the test when he partners with the matron of Final Chance House of Refuge. Someone is using the institution for children convicted of crimes as a cover for their participation in a green goods game, and theyre willing to silence anyone who poses a threat to their operations, including the matron and children who are forced to participate.

After readers finish Counterfeit Love, they can head to www.crystalcaudill.com where they can access bonus features including a virtual tour of 1884 Cincinnati, all the Secret Service research facts that didn’t make the story, and information about Bearing Precious Seeds, a Bible printing ministry where a portion of proceeds from the sales of Counterfeit Love will be donated. Caudill has also created a book club kit that includes discussion questions, behind-the-scenes fun facts, and more.

Right Cross ~ Review

Right Cross
A Shepherd Suspense Novel #3
By Andrew Huff

Former CIA agent and ex-pastor John Cross finds himself on the wrong side of the law. Imprisoned in the worst prison in England and stuck between two rival prison gangs - life couldn't get much bleaker. But not everything is as it appears as his on pause girlfriend Christine Lewis soon discovers.

Cyberterrorists have a plan in place and it will disrupt the world as we now know it (but isn't that always the case with those who are out to topple world governments and economic markets). It is a race across international borders and against time to stop these cyber masterminds who are master manipulators before they go too far and can't be stopped.

Right Cross is the third book in the Shepherd Suspense series and it is unputdownable reading. There are more than a few unexpected twists that keep the reader's suspense level at high. And a word of advice, read books 1 and 2 first, it's not that you won't enjoy this book without reading them first just that you'll better understand it with the backstory firmly in your mind. Excellent reading that you don't want to miss. And there just might be a fairly happy ending to be had if they can all survive what is coming.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Heart-pounding action meets spiritual choices in this thrilling finale to John Cross's saga

First he left the CIA. Then he left pastoral ministry. Now John Cross has been imprisoned in one of Great Britain's most infamous prisons. Has he reached the end of his rope? Or is this another move in a dangerous spy game?

Christine Lewis, United News Network's rising star television anchor, is determined to find out. But in her pursuit of answers, Christine finds herself at the center of a cyberterrorist plot to alter the balance of power in the world. From the English coastline to the Rocky Mountains, John must partner with the CIA and MI6 in a race against the clock to stop the threat of nuclear war and save the lives of everyone he holds dear.

The concluding story in the Shepherd Suspense trilogy is a globe-trotting, action-packed adventure with threads of biblical truth woven in. Fans of high-octane thrillers will be on the edge of their seats with Right Cross.

Dusk's Darkest Shores ~ Review

Dusk's Darkest Shores
Regency Wallflowers #1
By Carolyn Miller

Mary Bloomfield has never caught the eye of any man and at her age, it seems she never will. And with the war with Napoleon, Amberley has even fewer men available for those in need of a husband. But she has a purpose in her life, helping her father with his medical duties to the neighborhood and surrounding area. Her caring nature calls often upon the Lord for His healing touch on the ill. Her dreams of a home and family of her own seem to be just that dreams.

Adam Edgerton's family is anticipating his return from war, his actions have labeled him a hero and he is expected to marry soon upon his return. But none know that his return is for illness. An injury has apparently robbed Adam of his future. A future shrouded in the darkness of doubt, pain, and betrayal.

Seeking to help Adam to see beyond his new limitations, Mary reaches out offering hope and encouragement. But can he really have a future as he is now, a man surrounded by darkness for the rest of his days? Mary and her father are not about to give up on Adam.

Dusk's Darkest Shores is the first book in the Regency Wallflowers series and it is an excellent series debut. Set in England's Lake District, I loved Mary's descriptions of the area, her attention to detail shows the depth of her caring and nurturing spirit. Now there are some moments that reveal the darkness of the soul in a sinful world in this book that speak of the injustices of the world and the prejudices of human nature. This is just a thread that runs through the story and it has a different impact on the various characters and how they respond to it. I would recommend this book to teen and adult readers - it is excellent reading and continues the standard one is used to from Carolyn Miller's previous books. If you are new to her work this would be a good one to start with as it is the first in a new series.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
How can a meek wallflower help a returning war hero
whose dreams are plunged into darkness?

Mary Bloomfield's chances for matrimony have long since passed her by as she assists her father with his medical practice in England's beautiful Lake District. Even without love, it's a peaceful life.

Until decorated war hero Adam Edgerton returns, not to acclaim and rest, but to a new battle against the repercussions of an insidious disease. Mary's caring nature cannot stand to see someone suffer--but how can she help this man see any hope when his dreams are wasted by his condition?

Together they struggle to find a way forward for him, and slowly develop into friendship and esteem. Then a summer storm atop a mountain peak leads to scandal--and both Mary and Adam must search the depths of their hearts for answers to find any future path with happiness at its end.

The Indebted Earl ~ Review with Giveaway

The Indebted Earl JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for
The Indebted Earl by Erica Vetsch,

The Indebted Earl
The Indebted Earl
Serendipity and Secrets #3
By Erica Vetsch

For three years Lady Sophia Haverly has waited for Rich's return. The war has ended but Rich was a casualty right at the conclusion, but not before he extracted a promise from his friend and commanding officer to visit Sophie with his last words.

Having pledged herself to Rich, Sophie finds herself at a loss as she is not his widow just the fiance he never returned home to. But when time marches on not giving her time to grieve what was not to be she must recreate her life. When Captain Charles Wyvern arrives with Rich's possessions and his final words he also offers his assistance to Sophie and to Mamie, Rich's mother.

An offer of assistance to assuage his guilt was the least he could offer to the woman he got to know through his friend's letters. But when his own circumstances drastically change he finds that needs Sophie's help to navigate a world of which he has no understanding.

Charles Wyvern is a navy man through and through, from the age of 12 he has known no other life and he is in no way prepared to take on the management of an estate, three young wards, and the loathed title of Earl of Rothwell. He admits it, he needs help, and the only help available the houseful of women he has just found to be in his charge. The only solution he can see is Sophie and she agrees to his offer of a marriage of convenience.

But soon the estate and instant family he has just inherited are the least of his worries when he is accused of smuggling. Can a man whose only goal was to live a life of duty to his country and king fall to the machinations of traitors? Not if his new wife has anything to say about it. But the daughter of a duke and wife to an accused earl just might not have the voice those in power will listen to.

This is an excellent addition to the Serendipity and Secrets series. That being said one can read this book without having read the previous two books in the series and easily follow the story with no difficulties. It is interesting seeing Sophia and Charles work through their grief, guilt, and anger to get to the conclusion which was most satisfactory. This book will keep you turning the pages into the early hours of the morning (or until 7:00 am, in my case) but it is so worth it. I highly recommend this to those who are looking for clean reading Regency Romance.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Can Captain Wyvern keep his new marriage of convenience all business--or will it turn into something more?

Captain Charles Wyvern owes a great debt to the man who saved his life--especially since Major Richardson lost his own life in the process. The best way to honor that hero's dying wish is for Wyvern to escort the man's grieving fiance and mother safely to a new cottage home by the sea. But along the way, he learns of another obligation that has fallen on his shoulders: his uncle has died and the captain is now the Earl of Rothwell.

When he and the ladies arrive at his new manor house in Devon, they discover an estate in need of a leader and a gaggle of girls, all wards of the former earl. War the new earl knows; young ladies and properties he does not. Still wishing to provide for the bereaved Lady Sophia Haverly, Charles proposes a marriage of convenience.

Sophie is surprised to find she isn't opposed to the idea. It will help her care for her betrothed's elderly mother, and she's already fallen in love with the wayward girls on the Rothwell estate. This alliance is a chance to repay the captain who has done so much for her care, as well as divert her attention from her grief. When Wyvern returns to his sea commission, she'll stay behind to oversee his property and wards.

It sounds so simple. Until the stalwart captain is arrested on suspicion of smuggling, and Sophie realizes how much he's come to mean to her. Now she'll have to learn to fight, not only for his freedom but also for his love.
