Fires of Injustice ~ Review

Fires of Injustice
America's Forgotten War
By Kendy Pearson

When this book opens, we are introduced to Avery and Cait Mitchell, missionaries to China who are being forced out of the country by the government. And it is in this touching and tragic scene that a pivotal moment takes place, one that forms a thread that subtlety weaves its way through the story and Yakira "Kira" Mitchell's life.

Yakira's life is devoted to freeing Chinese girls being ill-used in California's Chinatowns. But many factors are working against her-the men who have bought these girls and the anti-Chinese sentiments sweeping through California. It is amazing the prejudicial sentiments so prevalent against people who were wanted for the labor they performed yet degraded because of their differences.

Seven years ago, Grant Campbell walked away, no he ran away from his home, his family, his friends, his loss, and his guilt. But now he's back, trying to carry on his late father's work by defending Chinese immigrants who are being downtrodden and being presented as lesser people. He wants, yet dreads, reconnecting with his family and Yakira, yet he knows that it is long overdue.

In a place being torn apart by deep-seated fears and biases Yakira and Grant are brought together to fight for those who are denied a voice. But California is a powder keg waiting for someone to strike a match. The match has been struck and Grant and Yakira are in a race against time to keep it from being dropped in their fight to save the people they have come to care about deeply, physically and spiritully.

This is a book for fans of American Historical Fiction who enjoy reading about those who stand firm against injustice, no matter the personal cost. I highly recommend this book and personally look forward to more books from this author.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book

Title: Fires of Injustice
Series: America's Forgotten War
Author: Kendy Pearson
Publisher: Pear Blossom Books
Release Date: April 15, 2026
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction

"A story of resilience, redemption, and love, FIRES OF INJUSTICE blazes with the courage of those who dared to stand against the darkness."

She is fighting for the innocent.
He is fighting for a second chance.

Yakira Mitchell has devoted her life to rescuing the forgotten from the clutches of exploitation, and now her dream of opening a mission home for Chinese girls is within reach. But as anti-Chinese sentiments sweep through the West, Yakira finds herself at the center of a storm of hostility and prejudice. She is building a home for the broken, but her own foundation threatens to crumble with new revelations about her past.

Attorney Grant Campbell, the boy who once held Yakira’s heart, returns to San Francisco to atone for his past mistakes and face the secret that drove him away. He is determined to defend Chinese immigrants and to reconcile with his family and Yakira. But old feelings flare—and so do old wounds.

When flames of injustice consume communities, violence rages, and lives hang in the balance. As Yakira fights to protect her girls, she must face the truth of who she really is—and who God has called her to be.

In the ashes of hatred, Yakira and Grant both discover a love stronger than fear and a purpose forged in fire.

For fans of historical fiction and stories of resilience, FIRES OF INJUSTICE is inspired by real, untaught horrors of the Chinese Exclusion era—when towns forcibly erased entire communities by fire, expulsions, and boycotts.

Set just twenty years after the American Civil War, this gripping tale of resilience, romance, and courage reveals another dark chapter of division—and the light that defied it.

Keeper of My Heart ~ Review

Keeper of My Heart
Discerning God’s Best #6
By Heidi Gray McGill

Cecelia Shankel doesn't have time for men who think she needs a man at her side to prove her worth in the saddle. No, she knows that she can get a job done and doesn't want to waste time on men who can't see who she is and what she's capable of.

Jimmy Reeves comes from a wealthy background, but instead of leveraging his place in society he's pursued knowledge. He might have trouble interacting with people, but he knows the intellectual side of the study of pharmaceutical practices. But Jimmy wants more and his old school mate Thomas Shankel provides just the opportunity he seeks. Jimmy goes beyond the classroom and lab seeking the natural side of healing and heads west.

Jimmy takes this opportunity given him to grow as both a person and a healer. What he hadn't counted was meeting Thomas's sister Cecelia, a young woman confident in her own abilities and unlike any woman he has ever before met, one who guards her independence and doesn't have time to waste on a man who can't keep up with her.

Jimmy and Cecelia seem like such opposites. Two people one wouldn't expect to ever work together, but when lives are on the line, they do so. What's more they see that each has something to offer, and that maybe God has a better plan for them than what they had made for themselves.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own

About the Book:

Cecelia Grace Trexler Shankel has never met her match. Raised on the rugged frontier, she rides harder, shoots straighter, and knows the land better than most men. At seventeen, she’s expected to marry, but no suitor has ever been her equal—and she refuses to settle for less. Independent to a fault and fiercely intelligent, Cecelia has no patience for anyone who can’t keep up with her.

Then James “Jimmy” Reeves arrives.

A brilliant but socially awkward pharmacist, Jimmy Reeves has spent his life mastering medicine, not people. After earning his medical degree in Philadelphia, he pursues further studies at the new school of pharmacy in South Carolina, refining his knowledge of formulas and precision-based healing. But instead of returning to a life of privilege, he heads west, determined to learn the practical side of medicine—where science meets survival.

His plan is simple: study natural remedies, assist his friend Thomas Shankel’s clinic, and return with newfound expertise. What he never expects is Cecelia Shankel—a woman as wild and untamed as the land itself, challenging everything he thought he knew about strength, skill, and survival.

Their first meeting is a clash of worlds—her bold confidence against his quiet precision. She thinks he’s too stiff and bookish; he finds her exasperatingly unpredictable. But when a sudden smallpox outbreak threatens the town, they are forced to work together, testing their skills, patience, and faith.

As sparks fly and respect grows, Cecelia finds herself drawn to a man who challenges her not with strength, but with knowledge. And Jimmy discovers that some things, like love and faith, can’t be measured in scientific terms.

But Cecelia isn’t ready to let any man keep her heart.
And Jimmy isn’t sure he’s brave enough to try.

In a world where independence is survival, can two opposites surrender to God’s best plan for their lives?

In Thy Tender Care ~ Review

In Thy Tender Care
The Caroles of Christmas
By Courtney Ranger

This was a lovely read.  It kept me reading late into the night because I had to know what happened as schoolteacher Lydia Miller and town doctor Andrew Williams join forces to care for the town's residents who become ill during an influenza outbreak.

In the beginning Lydia has some misgivings about Doctor Williams when he can't save everyone under his care. She is more than a little vocal in her doubts. But when she actually sees him working, Lydia realizes she may have misjudged him.

And when Lydia questions why this had to happen at Christmas, an elderly patient makes her rethink her understanding of Christmas and its true meaning. This results in some good old fashioned soul searching, especially after Doctor Williams say he is more concerned with a patient's soul health than their bodily health when he is at their side and knows their earthly is near.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

When an epidemic hits their small town at Christmastime, can a schoolteacher with a grudge and a doctor with a secret still share the light of the season with those without hope?

Lydia Miller loves teaching her students and living with her sister and adorable nephew, but her life gets turned upside down when an influenza epidemic hits her hometown right before Christmas. When a man she’s sworn to hate forever, Doctor Andrew Williams, knocks on her door asking for her assistance in providing medical aid to her community, she turns him down flat. However, as the epidemic comes to affect more people she cares about, she finds it hard to ignore the needs in her community and finds herself forced to spend too much time in the doctor’s presence.

As the epidemic rages and broken hearts seek healing, can God reveal that He truly holds all in His tender care?

The Lady of Red River Valley ~ Release Day

Front cover art of The Lady of Red River Valley featuring a man and woman in an embrace
The Lady of Red River Valley
Ladies of the Wilderness #2
By Gabrielle Meyer

For the last three years, Arran MacLean has worked tirelessly to establish a permanent settlement near Lake Winnipeg. If he can hold the colony together for five years, he has been promised one thousand acres of land. However, the colony's enemies have driven the colonists from the land at every opportunity. But Arran holds steady, believing in the dream that brought him to this place.

Lady Eleanor Brooke refused Arran's offer of marriage, not because she didn't love him, but because of her father. Now she has nothing, and the unfamiliar, harsh world that she has traveled to could steal all she has left - her life. Arran is determined to see her gone, but winter and its challenges have tied her to the colony until at least spring.

This is a story of differences and misunderstanding, where those in power fail to heed the words of wisdom offered by those who see beyond the current situation. Arran sees danger and that more needs to be done to ensure the settlers' safety. He is willing to sacrifice his second chance at love to keep those dear to him safe. However, there are times when all our planning cannot control how life unfolds, and this is just such a time.

This story explores the turbulent history of the Red River Valley in Winnipeg in 1815 and the efforts of those seeking to claim the land as their own. There are several intense scenes that stayed with me long after I put the book down.  I appreciated this glimpse into Canadian history. I've read about the issues surrounding the Hudson Bay Company before, but nothing that brought it to life like this book did.   One can't help but root for Arran and Eleanor to have a chance to be together and to be out of harm's way. This one tugs at the emotions, so you may want a tissue or two nearby.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

By 1815, Arran MacLean has been working for three years to build the Red River Colony near Lake Winnipeg. Each year, the colonists have been driven out by disease, hunger, and their enemies, the North West Company. He's thankful that the woman he loved, Lady Eleanor Brooke, had enough sense to turn him down when he asked her to marry him. But her rejection still haunts his memories.

Lady Eleanor Brooke has one regret, not marrying Arran when he proposed to her four years ago. At the time, her father had been in deep financial trouble and needed her to marry well. Now, with her father in Newgate Prison, and a scandal hanging over her head, Eleanor has nothing left to lose. She travels to the Red River Colony as a teacher, hoping to rekindle her relationship with Arran, but quickly realizes that coming to the North American Wilderness was a mistake.

Life in the colony is dangerous and heartbreaking, and Arran doesn’t want Eleanor to suffer. He plans to put her on the first ship back to England in the spring, but his plans are thwarted when their enemy attacks, and they are faced with insurmountable odds. When the worst happens, will they have what it takes to fight for the Red River Colony, and for each other?

Giver of Wonders ~ Review

Giver of Wonders
By Roseanna M. White

Giver of Wonder is an interesting read. It is a Christmas story, but not in the way most people think. Set in the early days of the Christian faith, when it was on the edge of persecution and acceptable, it follows the Visibullis family. The father is a firm non-believer, while his wife and three daughters are.

Although the Visibullis women are forbidden from worshipping with fellow believers, we are given a unique look into the lives of believers who gather in their own gathering—home worship, as many of the earliest believers did.

The youngest daughter, Cyprus was given a gift of healing that changed her life and that of her sisters when Petros and Nikolaos came to her aid. Soon, Cyprus and her sisters began a friendship with the young men. With many ups and downs, Cyprus and her sisters grew up and faced even more significant challenges to their faith. The greatest challenge comes just as the celebration of Christ's birth arrives - only a miracle can save them.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
A miracle once saved her life ~ will another give her a future?

Cyprus was little more than a child when a fall left her paralyzed...and when the boy known as the wonder-worker healed her. Ever since, she has wondered why the Lord spared her, what he has in store for her. But her pagan father thinks she was spared solely so she could be introduced to the wealthy wonder-worker, Nikolaos.

Nikolaos has never questioned that his call in life is to dedicate himself to the church and to God. Never, that is, until he and his cousin Petros meet the compelling Cyprus Visibullis. For years he struggles with the feelings she inspires...and with the sure knowledge that Petros loves her too.

Petros knows he will never be good enough for Cyprus's father to consider him as a match for his favorite daughter not as long as Nikolaos is there. But when tragedy strikes the Visibullis family, he will do anything to save his beloved. Unfortunately, his beloved is determined to do anything to save her sisters ~ even at the cost of herself.

As the festival of lights bathes their Greek city in beauty, Cyprus, Petros, and Nikolaos celebrate the miracle of their Savior s birth together one last time. And in remembrance of their Lord's greatest gift, one of them will make the ultimate sacrifice for the others...and a centuries-long tradition will be born.

An Unexpected Journey ~ Review

An Unexpected Journey JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for
An Unexpected Journey by Ann Elizabeth Fryer,

An Unexpected Journey
  An Unexpected Journey
  A Regency Hobbit Retelling
  By Ann Elizabeth Fryer

The premise behind this story is intriguing The Hobbit combined with the Regency period. It is just that, sort of. It is indeed set in the Regency period of England and there are elements of The Hobbit but it is done in such a way that unless one was well acquainted with The Hobbit you could miss it.

The need of a "thief" brings the Canfield family to the Grandview Estate, an estate slowly crumbling to disrepair. But also the home of Lady Laura Tamlow. Through a series of unfulfilled expectations Laura is unaware of the vital role she is expected to play in an attempt to retrieve the long stolen wealth of the Canfield and Tamlow families. Wealth lost due to scandalous events that began with Laura's grandfather's duplicitous actions more than 40 years ago. Thus the beginning of An Unexpected Journey. A journey filled with danger, intrigue, long-held secrets, and unexpected attraction.

Sometimes God leads us to a place and changes
our plans to enact His own plans.

I think the above quote from the book excellently describes and shares the heart of this story. The faith of the various characters is what keeps them continuing on in their journey, even in the face of doubts and unanticipated changes to the plan. But is it enough to see them through the danger and separations awaiting them? Can they stay the course? And what will the cost be to them if the succeed? If they fail debtor's prison, the workhouse, or a sentence to Australia is the best they can expect. A most unexpected reading experience is before you should you agree to go on it, but beware of the dragon, Lord Herrington who won't easily give up what and who he now claims as his!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This book was read through Kindle Unlimited.

Release Date:
November 28, 2024
Genre:
Regency Romance/Hobbit Retelling

A heritage neither of them desires, a wrong to right. A chance to end a family curse...

When strangers tumble through the doors of once resplendent Grandview Estate, Lady Laura Tamlow is pulled into a rather unexpected journey, away from the village she's never left along with a gentleman unlike any she's ever known.

Jonathan Canfield is out of options. And he'd do anything to restore his family fortunes in order to keep them from poverty, including roping Lady Tamlow into playing the part of thief. They must reclaim both his and her family jewels that were stolen the night of the fated Grand Masquerade of 1770, where both the Canfields and the Tamlows fell far from society's good graces. If only his thief weren't so lovely, he'd be able to focus on the mission without distraction.

But there's a bigger problem at hand. The jewels reside at Lombard Park under the eye of Lord Herrington, a greedy dragon of a man who knows he's about to die. Yet he has bigger claims than they ever imagined and attempts to steal something far more valuable than family jewels. With deception afoot, will Jonathan ever see Lady Tamlow again?

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Investigation of a Journalist

Investigation of a Journalist

Investigation of a Journalist
Harbored in Crow's Nest #6
By Danielle Grandinetti

This is the sixth book in the Harbored In Crow's Nest series, set in 1931 Wisconsin. I love the historical aspect of this series and the suspense thread running throughout it. This time, we finally get Buck Wilson's story.

Buck Wilson has been an intriguing person to get to know. In Crow's Nest, he is a bit of an enigma, hated or disliked by most. Yet he has moments where he comes across as a caring, good person. But his associations paint him in a different light. But the time has come for Buck to reveal the truth; to do so, he must reach out to the one person he never wanted to bring into this life.

Caroline Wagoneer last saw Buck over two years ago. He left one month before they were to be married, so when he shows up asking for her help, she is faced with a choice. Does she help him stop a dangerous foe? Or does she turn her back on his plea? But his plea touches her heart.

I enjoyed this book and feel this series is best read in order. Although this book can be read as a standalone title, you would be missing background information from the previous books. I love that Buck gets a second chance at the life he has had to leave behind. But a chance isn't a promise of tomorrow, and the people Buck is trying to stop won't go down quietly.

I really enjoy this kind of book and am willing to forego sleep for it. If you enjoy historical fiction, I highly recommend it. Danielle Grandinetti has a way of making history come alive with her gift of wordsmithing, and she is on my must-read list of authors.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
