This is a story of differences and misunderstanding, where those in power fail to heed the words of wisdom offered by those who see beyond the current situation. Arran sees danger and that more needs to be done to ensure the settlers' safety. He is willing to sacrifice his second chance at love to keep those dear to him safe. However, there are times when all our planning cannot control how life unfolds, and this is just such a time.
This story explores the turbulent history of the Red River Valley in Winnipeg in 1815 and the efforts of those seeking to claim the land as their own. There are several intense scenes that stayed with me long after I put the book down. I appreciated this glimpse into Canadian history. I've read about the issues surrounding the Hudson Bay Company before, but nothing that brought it to life like this book did. One can't help but root for Arran and Eleanor to have a chance to be together and to be out of harm's way. This one tugs at the emotions, so you may want a tissue or two nearby.
