SYNOPSIS

She invented a husband to save him. She didn't expect him to take the job so seriously.

Squire Derby Wenk has one goal: sail south to his sick mother.

The last person he expects to find on a merchant ship full of ruffians is Lady Lathia Livna — cousin to the queen, daughter of the house he serves, and the last woman in ErRets who should be traveling alone.

She's clearly hoping he'll pretend he didn't see her.

Not a chance. His duty is plain: see her safely home.

But Lady Lathia isn't turning back. She came to Land's End to help her best friend — and to finally live on her own terms. She didn't plan on Derby following her off the ship. When thugs close in and the black knights come to detain Derby, she blurts out the only thing that can save him: "He's my husband!"

Derby is the squire she spent years outmaneuvering, dismissing, and deliberately mispronouncing his name just to watch him flinch. Now she's trapped inside Volstone Castle, in a fake marriage, trying to help her best friend survive a treacherous courtship.

Except Derby is not who she thought he was. He swears the Shield Oath — a warrior's vow to stand between her and all harm, freely given, when nothing requires it. He's kind. He's steady. He would give his life for her.

And the lie she invented to save him keeps growing inconveniently real.

But someone wants control of Land's End — and they'll burn everything in their path to take it. When Lathia is caught up in danger, she'll have to trust the one man she never wanted to rely on…her husband.

She came here to disappear. She never planned on being found.

An epic story about a runaway noblewoman who stopped believing in rescue, a loyal man who can't stop showing up, and a God who keeps standing in the gap.

About the Book:

She needed a fresh start.
He needed a second chance.
But the past isn't finished with either of them.

Grendolyn Hoff returned to Sitna with a baby on her hip and a plan: build a life for her daughter, alone, on her own terms. She doesn't need anyone. She especially doesn't need the reformed troublemaker who spent years trying to be worthy of her love while she spent years making sure he knew he had no place in her life.

But her late husband Riga's secrets have a way of surfacing. And when those secrets point straight to a conspiracy threatening the throne itself, the people behind it don't care that she had no part in it.

Harnu Poe isn't standing aside while danger circles Gren and her daughter. Even if it means facing everything from the past he fought so hard to leave behind.

The conspiracy won't stop until they're both silenced. And when they stand together against the shadows, Gren will have to face the truth she's been running from: she can't lose him.

But can she let her wounded heart trust him before it's too late?

A stand-alone, faith-forward romantasy set in Jill Williamson's beloved Er'Rets—for readers who love slow-burn second-chance romance, protective heroes who keep showing up, and a faith that pursues even the most wounded hearts.

Queen of Reckoning ~ Review

Queen of Reckoning
Blood of Kings: Legends #5
Jill Williamson presents Kelly Fernlake

I love that the Blood of Kings series has this engaging spinoff series to delve into. And the fifth book, Queen of Reckoning, does not disappoint. In this book, we return to Jaelport as Mandzee Hamartano tries to maintain her role as queen, but her treaty with King Gidon is viewed unfavorably by her people.

Worse, her tenure seems doomed to be short. When Lovell Dunn shows up early in her role as a royal envoy, things become even more volatile as her connections with Armonguard are brought once again into focus.

With her worthiness and abilities called into question, Mandzee feels she must compete in an annual tournament to earn her people's trust as ruler. But the tournament could be the very thing that brings down her rule and shortens her life. With threats surrounding her, Mandzee might have to rely on Lovell Dunn to help her discover who is targeting her and why.

Lovell has the unique ability to thoroughly annoy Mandzee, but all he's trying to do is make sure she is following the terms of the treaty she signed, keep her safe, charm her, and leave Jaelport as soon as possible. Though why he has to charm her, he's not sure. It certainly has nothing to do with saving her life previously or thinking about her a lot.  Nope, it is just part of his personality. Umhum, right. Nothing else.

Queen of Reckoning is so good. I love how Mandzee is working through the best way to rule. Does she follow the examples of the queens who came before, including her mother? Delving into the magic that steals a piece of her soul little by little with each spell? Or does she instead turn to her new knowledge of Armon and learn from Lovell?

This is, at its heart, a book about heart and trust. Will this be a new beginning to something better in Jaelport? Or will they fall deeper into the darkness that is already consuming them?

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
A queen who rules by magic and the one man she can’t disarm.

Mandzee Hamartano didn’t ask to be queen. She didn’t ask for the peace treaty that’s turned half her city against her, the mage tournament that’s about to put her life on the line, or the envoy from Armonguard who’s moved into her palace and refuses to leave.

She certainly didn’t ask to fall for him.

Lovell Dunn is King Gidon’s royal envoy, tasked with one job: shadow the queen, keep the treaty, and report back. He’s not there to be charmed by a mage with copper eyes and a laugh that could melt stone. He’s especially not there to let her heal the condition that’s been stealing his sight for years.

But Mandzee is in more danger than either of them realizes. A deadly mage tournament is being used as a killing ground. A dark force is gathering inside her walls. And her brother—believed dead—has just walked out of the shadows with a powerful spirit at his command and a blade aimed at her throne.

To save her city, Mandzee will have to trust an Armanite who distrusts magic. And Lovell will have to risk the one future he’s been fighting for—to protect the one woman he can’t get out of his head.

Scoundrel of Claymore Keep ~ Review

Scoundrel of Claymore Keep
The King's Spies #2
By Jill Williamson

First thing you need to know is you must read Shadow of Ice Island before you read this book. The two books go together, and Scoundrel of Claymore Keep picks up where Shadow left off.

Kurtz Chazir, Zanna tan Quelle, Cole Tanniyn, and Mistel Wepp are continuing to search for answers to the questions that they came across in Shadow. And Kurtz is looking for the woman responsible for putting him in Ice Island for thirteen years. He seeks justice for the woman who framed him for King Axel's murder, though some might call it vengeance, or revenge.

But when things start to go wrong Kurtz must face the truth—there's his way or Arman's way. Then there is Zanna whom for some strange reason has become important to him, after viewing her as an irritant and nemesis for so long. And this strange phenomenon seems to have affected Zanna too.

With danger awaiting them and any misstep they might make, tensions are high and unnecessary (aka unwanted) feelings and attractions will just make matters worse; especially with something interfering with the ability to blood voice.

I love how this series has added to itself over the years. And this companion/spinoff series is an excellent addition to the Blood of Kings story world. I love the subtle and not so subtle nuisances. Bring on the next installment; I'm a waiting!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

THE SCOUNDREL

Kurtz Chazir isn't looking for redemption—he's hunting for revenge.

Thirteen years in prison for a crime he didn't commit taught him three things: trust no one, question everything, and never forgive the woman who destroyed his life. Now free and working as one of the king's spies, Kurtz has a chance to track down Careeanne Nariel, the seductress who framed him for King Axel's assassination.

But first, he must lead a team into Barth, a city shrouded in supernatural darkness where magic and conspiracy intertwine. His mission: find a missing land warden and expose a trafficking ring selling innocent women. The catch? He has to do it while pretending to be a singing minstrel.

Kurtz may be many things, but a performer isn't one of them.

THE WARRIOR

Zanna tan Quelle doesn't take orders wellpespecially from arrogant former prisoners.

A half-giant soldier with more combat experience than patience, Zanna is assigned to Kurtz's team to provide protection. What she gets instead is endless bickering, impossible decisions, and a man who thinks he knows everything.

He's stubborn. Reckless. Infuriating.

And somehow, he's the only person who sees past her warrior's exterior to the woman beneath.

When their undercover mission goes sideways and ancient blood magic resurfaces, Zanna finds herself fighting battles on two fronts: against the black knights closing in, and against the unwanted feelings stirring in her heart.

THE CONSPIRACY

Duke Falkson's fortress holds dark secrets—human trafficking, demonic altars, and a thirteen-year-old murder conspiracy.

As Kurtz and Zanna infiltrate the nobility's inner circle, they discover the truth runs deeper than either imagined. The black knights aren't just soldiers—they're part of a network stretching across the kingdom. The missing women aren't lost—they're enslaved. And the darkness covering Barth isn't natural—it's powered by blood sacrifice.

When Zanna is captured inside Claymore Keep and Kurtz must choose between his quest for vengeance and saving the woman who's become everything he never knew he needed, he'll learn that some battles aren't won with swords.

They're won on your knees.

Shadow of Ice Island ~ Review

Shadow of Ice Island
The King's Spies #1
By Jill Williamson

This book is just SO good. I love the banter between the characters as they try to break into the prison on Ice Island. Cole Tanniyn's uncle is being held there, framed for a crime he didn't commit. Now Cole has to figure out how to get in undetected, not get caught, and get out. But when Mistel Wepp manages to follow him into danger after being told she wasn't supposed to, their plans are quickly altered to include her as Cole's cousin. Never mind that they look nothing alike. (Okay, I take that back, they both have two eyes, noses, two hands... Well, you get the picture.) Passing for cousins seems a stretch, especially with both having feelings for the other. But Mistel is correct, Cole, Kurtz, and those helping them need Mistel and her talent for grabbing attention and creating a distraction.

I love how the blood-speaking of the author's previous series continues on in this one. This book captured my attention and kept me up WAY too late and getting up WAY too early just because I needed to know what was happening next and if they could get out of their latest unplanned trouble. Highly recommended reading for teens and adults.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
What happens when a reluctant spy discovers his greatest mission is protecting the woman who stole his heart?

Cole Tanniyn thought his days of danger were over when he traded his sword for a lute. But when the king sends him north as an undercover minstrel to investigate mysterious disappearances from the infamous Ice Island prison, Cole's carefully ordered world changes—especially when Mistel Wepp
, the fiery-haired songstress he's falling for, secretly follows him into mortal peril.

She was supposed to stay safe. He was supposed to stay focused. Neither of them expected to fall this hard.

Posing as traveling performers with Kurtz, a gruff former prisoner seeking justice, Cole and Mistel must navigate dangerous taverns thick with secrets while their fake "cousin" relationship becomes increasingly difficult—especially when every shared glance and gentle touch threatens to reveal their true feelings. But when Cole's personal quest to visit his imprisoned uncle becomes entangled with a deadly conspiracy, and Mistel's bold curiosity lands her in trouble, everything changes.

Now Cole must choose: the mission that could free an innocent man... or the woman he loves.

As a web of corruption reaches the highest levels of power, and villains from Cole's traumatic past close in, he faces an impossible choice. With Mistel's life in danger and dark family secrets threatening to surface, Cole must find the courage to fight for love—even if it means defying orders and confronting the demons of his past.

Perfect for fans of the sweet romance and swashbuckling adventure, this story weaves together tender love, heart-pounding action, and the kind of connection that transforms two hearts.

Because sometimes the greatest adventure is finding someone worth everything

Romance tropes readers adore:
• Sweet forbidden love (fake cousins!)
• Protective hero who'd do anything for her
• Brave heroine who stands by his side
• Tender moments stolen in secret
• "I'll keep you safe" devotion
• Adventure that brings hearts together
• That perfect first "I love you"

Heir of Light ~ Review

Heir of Light
Blood of Kings: Legends #4
By Jill Williamson and Niki Florica

Heir of Light, the fourth book in the Blood of Kings: Legends series, was such a good read. I've loved each book in the series, and they have to be read in order to fully enjoy and understand what is happening.

In this book, we are brought into Sir Rigil Barak's world. He is the chosen heir of his father's estate and title. But he feels that his mistakes and failings, which are numerous by his count, make him a poor choice for the role. And his biggest failings - he cannot protect those around him. An interesting take on his life, as he is a knight.

When Rigil's latest mission takes him to Land's End, he comes face-to-face with his greatest failing - Sethe, the young woman he thought captured or killed years ago. But Sethe isn't dead, and she needs Rigil's help to escape the man who is determined to use her in his bloodvoicing experiments in an attempt to overthrow those loyal to Arman, Prince Oren and King Gidon.

But to free Sethe and to protect Armonguard, Rigil will have to trust Arman completely and let go of his feelings of unworthiness, of failure. Which is a big step for anyone, but for Rigil, it seems impossible.

I won't say this is my favorite book in the series. I don't think I could single out just one, but this was really good and up there at the top. It is appropriate for teens and up, in my opinion.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations, but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Sir Rigil Barak came to Land’s End expecting a routine mission: investigate some rumors, spy on some nobles, and above all, play the perfect knight. Instead, he is reunited with his less-than-shining past--the same past that has kept him on the road for years, fleeing his noble father's scorn and grieving the woman he thought dead.

Until now.

Because in Land's End, he sees a face he never thought he’d see again . . . at least, not outside his dreams. And if she's alive, he'll do anything for a second chance to save her.

Years of captivity to a madman left Sethe with a face full of scars and one rule: never be trapped again. Except, to keep that rule, she'll have to ask for help from Rigil, the thief who broke her heart and abandoned her long ago. Now, years later, he shows up to rescue her from Land’s End like a knight in shining armor? Who does he think he is?

And even if the boy from her past has become a real knight with real honor, can she fall for a man who lied to her?

Maybe that doesn't matter now, because Sethe’s old captor is hot on her heels with a new invention that could turn her into something worse than a prisoner. He could turn her into a weapon.

Fortunately, Rigil and Sethe always did know how to pull off a heist--and if they can steal the enemy’s deadly new weapon, they can save the kingdom. For Sethe, this means trusting Rigil without letting him anywhere near her heart. For Rigil, it means a second chance with the woman whose heart he once broke.

And this time, failure could cost them everything.

Dive into this swashbuckling story of second chances, forbidden love, espionage and epic adventure in this fourth book in the Blood of Kings: Legends series.

Blood of Kings: Legends #3
By Jill Williamson and Kelly Fernlake

Lady Tara is finally free from the man her father married her to. But the people refuse to accept her, and there are rumors that she and her shield, Carmack, murdered her late husband. When her family doesn't come to her assistance, Tara takes matters into her own hands to save Carmack's life. Things don't go quite as planned.

But when Tara learns of a danger to her family, she knows that she is the only one who can help them. But Carmack isn't about to let her go into danger without his protection. But the danger threatens the entire Kingdom of Er'Rets, and the safety Tara counted on may not be hers to claim. Can Tara and Carmack learn that Arman's will may not be the same as theirs?

I have to say I think Lady of Shadow may be my favorite book in the Blood of Kings: Legends series. I loved the dynamics between the characters. And the attitudes of the people of Meribah Corner are less than inviting or welcoming. Poor Lady Gershom! I am also enjoying the experience of exploring more of this world and the complex relationships between its various factions.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but to provide my honest opinion. All thoughts are my own.

About the Book:

The only man she loves is the one she can never have…

Lady Tara’s dreams of marrying for love were shattered with her arranged marriage to the sickly Lord Gershom. Fine. She may not have love, but she has purpose—a position of power that lets her make a difference in the kingdom. At least her Carmack, her fiercely loyal shield, remains by her side, even if she must deny her heart.

Then Lord Gershom dies. And to her horror, Carmack is blamed. Branded a traitor, he flees, forcing Tara to choose between protecting the life she’s built or following the man she loves.

Loving her might cost him everything…

Carmack Demry has secretly loved Lady Tara all his life, sworn to protect her at any cost—even if it meant watching her wed another man. But now, accused of a crime he didn’t commit, he’s on the run because staying away is the only way to keep her safe. Except Tara has other plans.

Determined to clear his name, she plunges into a web of treachery and deceit that reaches far beyond them both—one that threatens the very heart of the kingdom. Together, they must navigate a world of danger, unravel a conspiracy, and face a choice more perilous than any deny their love or risk everything to claim it.
