Unseen Danger ~ Review with Excerpt

Unseen Danger JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for
Unseen Danger by Jerusha Agen,

Unseen Danger
Unseen Danger
Guardians Unleashed #3
By Jerusha Agen

When Nevaeh Williams saves a man's life, her quick thinking puts her past and present on a collision course. Her actions catch the eye of not only Branson Aaberg, but his employer D-Chop. When the famous rapper hires the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency as additional security, her recurring PSTD is triggered leaving her wondering how long she can keep her attacks from affecting her work.

Branson Aaberg has been heading up D-Chop's security for a while, but the lifestyle of his employer has been eating him up. He needs the job and its pay, but its cost is high. When Nevaeh and Phoenix K-9 get the call to help beef up security, he is puzzled by her almost hostile attitude toward him.

Nevaeh's nightmares have come back. But what's real, and what is paranoia? Are her feelings of being watched just a symptom of her PSTD or because of D-Chop's overzealous fans?

This is a fast-paced read that draws one in from the opening scene. It is interesting to finally get Nevaeh's backstory. Also, getting a small glimpse into her friendship with coworker Jazz provided an intriguing hint at Jazz and Nevaeh's pre-Phoenix friendship.

Overall this was a very good read that dealt with several important issues facing many people. Staying true to your beliefs and the undermining power of fear. How many allow fear to control their lives? How does one recognize such damaging control? Unseen Danger is an excellent addition to the Elite Guardians series. I will say one could read this as a standalone title without reading the previous books, but it will read better after reading the series in order. Highly recommended; this would also make an excellent book club selection. And I have to say it, I love the dogs!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Excerpt:
Nevaeh whirled to see the nanny dart into the building as Darren crashed to the blacktop. Shot.
Two men in ski masks rushed out from behind garbage bins, carrying guns. Kidnappers?

Alvarez barked and snarled.

“On it!” She dropped his leash, pulled Bear behind her legs, and gripped the boy’s arm
with her left hand as she drew her Sig. She didn’t want to shoot someone in front of Bear, but she’d do it to save his life.

Alvarez launched himself at the closest man, gripping his wrist in powerful jaws and
thrashing.

The man screamed, and his gun dropped.

The other one tried to aim at Alvarez, but he’d probably hit his pal with how much Al
was moving.

“Don’t try it.” She leveled her Sig at him. “Drop the weapon.”

Brakes screeching jerked her head to the right.

A black van pulled to a halt six feet from Sam and Destiny.

“Kids! Run to me!” She holstered her Sig, scooped Bear into her arms, and sprinted for
the other kids as they ran her way.

Celebrity bodyguard Branson Aaberg could lose more than his career if he fails to end the mysterious threat against his client. Soon he’s more concerned with rescuing the tough but vulnerable woman who joins his security team.

Nevaeh is there to protect her friend, but what if she needs protection? What if the feeling she’s being watched isn’t the result of her traumatized imagination? If the danger is real, Nevaeh's only hope for survival may be the God powerful enough to defeat her worst enemy—the one she doesn't see before it's too late.

The Art of Love and Lies ~ Review

The Art of Love and Lies
A Proper Romance
By Rebecca Anderson

Rosanna Hawkins and her sisters have been afforded a most unusual upbringing - their parents have allowed them to pursue their passions. Rosanna's has made her a most accomplished artist, though not under her own name. Rather she recreates the masterpieces so those in England can enjoy "parlor versions" in their own homes. At least that's what her employer has told her.

With the art exhibition being held in Manchester, Rosanna has daily access to some of the world's greatest pieces including Michaelangelo’s The Manchester Madonna. And she also enjoys a harmless bit of flirting with Inspector Martin Harrison, who is head of the exhibition's security.

When it becomes clear that someone is switching Rosanna's "parlor versions" for the real pieces she finds herself at the top of the suspect list. Now the true dangers of allowing young ladies to be independent have come to light. Her all too trusting nature have made her easy prey as she wasn't under her parents' watchful eye. But Rosanna isn't about to allow herself to be a victim and is more than willing to help Martin capture the true criminal and restore the priceless treasures to their rightful owners. But can he ever trust her, much less love her?

This was a delightful read and one in which the author thoroughly engaged my attention. The characters had depth and the settings were described so that I felt I was moving amongst it and the fellow exhibit visitors. I would love to revisit these characters in a future book. If love sweet romance, a touch of intrigue, and fun banter look no further for your next read - you've found it in The Art of Love and Lies.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
A free-spirited artist teams up with a no-nonsense detective to capture a thief
who has stolen a priceless Michaelangelo painting.

Manchester, England, 1857

Rosanna Hawkins is one of Manchester’s finest artists, even though no one knows her name. She reproduces “parlor versions” of classic masterpieces with near-perfect precision, which her employer then sells to the emerging upper-middle class families.

When the largest art exhibition ever to be held in England opens in Manchester, Rosanna is excited to visit. She meets the handsome Inspector Martin Harrison, who is head of security, and is immediately intrigued by his charm, confidence, and portrait-worthy good looks. The two spend many a flirtatious afternoon exploring the exhibition hall, discussing art, and sharing their secret hopes. Rosanna dreams of painting something original and meaningful, and Martin hopes to one day shed the shadow of his father’s notorious past.

But when they discover the theft of some of the paintings—and all the evidence points to Rosanna—she must convince Inspector Harrison she is innocent and proposes a plan to capture the real art thief.

It is a daring race to catch the criminal before he disappears with the most priceless piece in the collection—Michaelangelo’s The Manchester Madonna. If Rosanna and Inspector Harrison fail, not only will the painting be lost forever but so will their chance to paint their own happily ever after.

In This Moment ~ Review

In This Moment
Timeless #2
By Gabrielle Meyer

Maggie has inherited her parent's time-crossing gift, but she has inherited both of their abilities, so she lives in three separate time periods. In 1861, she is the daughter of a US Senator and friends with the Lincolns as the nation teeters on the edge of war. In 1941, she lives with her time-crossing parents and is a Navy nurse. At this time, the world is caught up in a war that the US has thus far stayed out of, But Maggie knows all too soon they will join the conflict. And in her third life, she lives in 2001, a medical student well on her way to becoming a surgeon. And a world she has no foreknowledge of.

Yet her time is short; she has mere months left to live in two of her lives. But when you are only 20 years old, how can you choose which lives to give up? Which family do you say goodbye to?

As Maggie struggles to make a decision, she must weigh all her options. She has determined to not fall in love in any timeline so as to not allow romance to make her decision for her. But her heart has other plans, and in each, she meets someone who could sway her decision.

I love this series and I can say with all honesty I would not want to be Maggie and faced with such a decision. How does one decide who to leave behind forever? And how can you be sure you made the right choice in a life where you won't get a second chance, a do-over? And to be that, you have to bury any knowledge you retain of the future forever. That would be so hard, especially if your knowledge could save lives, but at the cost of your own life in that timeline.

This reads best after reading the first book in the series - When the Day Comes. And in my opinion, would make a really good pair of movies if done like the books.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Maggie inherited a gift from her time-crossing parents that allows her to live three separate lives in 1861, 1941, and 2001. Each night she goes to sleep in one time period and wakes up in another. Until that is, she turns twenty-one, when she will have to forfeit two of those lives--and everyone she knows in them--forever.

In 1861, Maggie is the daughter of an influential senator at the outbreak of the Civil War, navigating a capital full of Southern spies and wounded soldiers. In 1941, she is a Navy nurse, grappling with her knowledge of the future when she's asked to join a hospital ship being sent to Pearl Harbor. And in 2001, she's a brilliant young medical student, fulfilling her dream of becoming a surgeon, yet unable to use her modern skills in her other paths.

While Maggie has sworn off romance until she makes her final choice, an intriguing man tugs at her heart in each era. The mysterious British gentleman. The prickly, demanding doctor. The charming young congressman. She's drawn to each man in different ways, only complicating the impossible decision she must make, which looms ever closer.

With so much on the line, how can Maggie choose just one life to keep and the rest to lose?

The All-American ~ Review

The All-American
Susie Finkbeiner

Bertha Harding has resigned herself to knowing she'll never master domestic skills. Her attempts at making a light, flaky pie crust - well, let's just say it is better off uneaten and untouched. Kitchen Queen in the making, she is not. Rather her skills lie in a more athletic pursuit - GASP, a girl playing baseball!

The All-American is told in alternating chapters from Bertha's perspective and that of her little sister Flossie (aka Florence). Bertha has a passion for baseball while Flossie's is reading. Flossie finds friends in her books and actually has trouble making living, breathing friends. (I can relate).

Though they don't really fit the expected mold of young ladies in the early 1950s, their lives are fairly happy and content. Until everything changes when their father is accused of being a Communist. They face the hate that he is now taunted with. Forced to leave their lives behind, Bertha and Flossie cling to what has brought them their greatest joys baseball and books.

This book is an interesting read. I've read books set in the 1950s before, but I have never read one in which the characters are subjected to the judgment of the House Un-American Activities Committee. This was always just a small blurb in school when American history was discussed. I love books that can entertain me with a story while imparting a piece of knowledge. Overall a good read and one that I think is well suited to a book club.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
It is 1952, and nearly all the girls, 16-year-old Bertha Harding knows dream of getting married, keeping house, and raising children in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. Bertha dreams of baseball. She reads every story in the sports section, she plays ball with the neighborhood boys--she even writes letters to the pitcher for the Workington Sweet Peas, part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.

When Bertha's father is accused of being part of the Communist Party by the House Un-American Activities Committee, life comes crashing down on them. Disgraced and shunned, the Hardings move to a small town to start over where the only one who knows them is shy Uncle Matthew. But dreams are hard to kill, and when Bertha gets a chance to try out for the Workington Sweet Peas, she packs her bags for an adventure she'll never forget.

Join award-winning author Susie Finkbeiner for a summer of chasing down your dreams and discovering the place you truly belong.

Countdown ~ Review

Countdown
Extreme Measures #4
By Lynette Eason

Rania Price has been hiding - hiding from the past yet never free from it. It has destroyed her trust, keeping her from moving forward. But now, her past and her present are about to collide. What's worse is that her friends could now be in danger from the very man she left behind more than fourteen years ago. And to protect those she knew and those she knows, she'll do just about anything to keep them safe.

Vincent Corelli is determined to keep Raina safe.  If he hopes to have a future with her, he'll have to use the resources he has at his disposal as a US Marshal to help her.

Countdown is the fourth book in the Extreme Measures series and is set in North Carolina. And in this book, which can be read and enjoyed on its own, we finally get to know Raina. And her backstory is really something. It is also a cautionary tale in some ways.

As with the previous books in the series "extreme" is a perfect description as Raina must not only face her past, but she must also share it with those around her. Admitting vulnerability and past mistakes, even if it is just in judgement, is never easy. The truth will set you free is about to be something Raina puts to the test as she and Vince race against time to find and stop whoever is after her.

Love intense suspense and a touch of romance? This is one book you don't want to miss.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
A stalker who wants to finish what he started.
A US Marshal who's vowed to protect his charge.
And one woman who is determined to put the past in the past.

Flight paramedic Raina Price has been running so long it's hard to stop. To escape a dangerous stalker, she changed her name and disappeared, building a new life with the help of a friend from her time in juvie. It feels good to put her energies into saving people's lives, but because her stalker was never found, she's never stopped looking over her shoulder. And one can only run so far before the past finally catches up.

US Marshal Vincent Corelli's job is to hunt down fugitives and protect those who are assigned to him. When Raina is almost killed right in front of him, he vows to protect her at all costs--whether it's his job or not. Together they work to solve the mystery of Raina's past. But someone is out to make sure Raina doesn't live long enough to do it.
