Be Still My Soul ~ Review

Be Still, My Soul
Mysteries of the West #1
By Faith Blum
Read by Brantley Brumley

Be Still, My Soul is an intriguing read. The story is told primarily from Carsten's viewpoint. As a young boy, Carsten was taught thievery by his father. Carsten was skilled at it until the night he was caught in the act. Since that day, Carsten has changed for the better. But after his father is caught and convicted, the townsfolk view Carsten with suspicion, and when a robbery occurs, Carsten is the one and only suspect. What's worse, the marshal seems to have no intention of finding the true criminal.

Carsten is determined to clear his name, but accepting help isn't easy for Carsten, even when his friends offer it. When it becomes clear that more is going on than theft, Carsten and his friends soon find themselves in even more danger than they had ever expected and need help. But will the help they need arrive in time? Or will Carsten be convicted of a crime he didn't commit because of the crimes of his father? Trust is a two-way street and is a lesson that Carsten and his friends need to learn.

This book would, in my opinion, appeal to homeschoolers. The main characters are all young adults who are trying to figure life out but with a faith-based support system. I feel that Susan K. Marlow is the author whose work I would most closely compare the style and feel of this story to. Anyone familiar with her Circle C and Goldtown series should enjoy this first book in the Mysteries of the West series.

I enjoyed this book in the audio edition, which was read by Brantley Brumley. The reading was well presented, though I played it 1.5 times the normal speed as I read faster than the playback speed. At less than 4 hours, this is a perfect road trip companion, especially for those "Are we there yet?" riders.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

"Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour." - Ephesians 4:28

When Carsten Whitford is arrested for a robbery he didn't commit, he struggles to clear his name that's already stained by his father's arrest from four years ago. Carsten is the sole supporter of his mother and he works the farm he has lived on his whole life.

The day after his arrest, Carsten's mentor gets him released until the trial. Carsten and his three friends work together to prove he didn’t rob the store since no one, especially the town marshal, seems interested in finding out who is truly guilty. The townspeople assume he is guilty because of his father’s past, including the girl Carsten wants to court.

Will Carsten and his friends find out who truly robbed the store or will they find something more sinister that could even lead to their own deaths?

All's Fair in Love and Christmas ~ Review

All's Fair in Love and Christmas
By Sarah Monzon

Mackenzie Graham loves her job; she's good at it. Until she has to make a presentation or talk face-to-face with anyone. And now she's up for a promotion that will demand just that. What's worse she's competing against her secret crush.

Jeremy Fletcher has a plan and everything is on track. He's up for promotion at work and he knows his work speaks for itself. And he knows he can get the right Christmas cheer to help him make it a sure thing. There's just one little problem now that he's getting to Mackenzie, he's beginning to realize she's so much more than who she presents to the world.

All's Fair in Love and Christmas is a fun read. Can you ever have too much Christmas?  Mackenzie and Jeremy and their coworkers are about to find out. And there may be a few Christmas cheer fails along the way. This is a contemporary read that focuses on family and allowing life to happen in unexpected ways.  This cute read finds Mackenzie and Jeremy having to rethink just what they expect from life and realizing that sometimes control needs to be relinquished. This is mostly a light read but there are some serious moments that help one understand what shaped these characters into the people they are. This was an easy and for me a quick weekend read,

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Every December two things are guaranteed for graphic designer Mackenzie Graham--Christmas celebrations and the annual promotion at her workplace. Those two things are by no means mutually exclusive. In fact, the better an employee is at harnessing the Christmas spirit, the more likely they'll win the new job. With her social anxiety, Mackenzie never thought she'd be a contender in her company's holiday competition, so how exactly has she found herself dueling her workplace crush with wrapping paper tubes and using tinsel as her weapon of choice for a much-needed raise?

Jeremy Fletcher's life is meticulously planned out, including how to win this year's promotion at work. Not only will the new position fulfill some of his career goals, but the raise will help him as a single guardian to his twin niece and nephew. Jeremy has barely noticed Mackenzie Graham around the office, but now that she's his rival, he can't stop thinking about her. Her quirkiness intrigues him, and he's afraid that if he can't get his head on straight, the job isn't the only thing he'll end up losing to Mackenzie.

'Tis the season for romance, faith, and humor--all wrapped up in this enchanting holiday rom-com from award-winning author Sarah Monzon.

To Capture a Beauty ~ Review

To Capture a Beauty:
A Snow Queen Retelling
Shattered Tales #12
By Kimberly Pearl

Lydia knows she lives in the shadow of her older sister's beauty. And as far as the young men in the area go, she'll always be an afterthought or a distant memory once they catch a glimpse of Rosalee. Even her mother's insistence that Rosales was destined to capture the heart of a man of wealth and prestige showed how inferior Lydia was to her sister. So when a young man stops to actually talk to her and get to know her, she's more than a little surprised and doubtful that his attention will last. And when she learns that he's her father's new apprentice she's pleased at the prospect of more time together.

When Leif meets Lydia on the road to Moonrose, Lydia's family's farm, he's surprised how easily he can converse with her. Their shared interest in plants gives them a point connection as they work together, gathering the herbs and plants her father needs.

But there is danger in the area.  What the danger is no one knows, but young women are disappearing. Finding himself not only an apprentice but an unofficial guard for Lydia, Leif shares with her secrets about plants that he alone knows. Secrets that show her just how affected the area's vegetation is by magic.

When the pair stumble upon an enchanted mirror, they avoid it, but Lydia's brief glimpse reveals something. It showed her heart's desire - perfection. Caught in its siren call, she is tempted to take what it offers perfect unending beauty. Can she withstand its call?

This was a delightful read. Can the unintended rivalry between sisters drive them apart? Lydia's sense of inferiority drives her, damaging her past friendship with her sister. But she is fiercely loyal to her family.

If you are someone who skips prologues, don't as it sets the whole mood and tone for the book. Deep-seated hurt, feelings of unworthiness, and inferiority that must be overcome. This is an excellent twist on the Snow Queen that will leave wanting more. The book was more than a little engaging; it was, in fact, unputdownable! Highly recommended for any reader over the age of 12 years who is looking for a clean reading, fairytale retelling.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
An enchanted mirror in the woods.
Maidens going missing.
An intriguing farmhand who could easily capture her heart

Lydia knows she isn’t the most beautiful Rolnik sister. She tries not to be bothered by the fact, focusing instead on her sketches and helping on the family herb farm. But as her feelings for the handsome new hire grow, so does her dread that her sister’s beauty will outshine her own.

When she discovers a mirror in the woods that shows a flawless version of herself, its beckoning calls are hard to resist. Especially when the silvery voice tells her she could step through and make the reflection a reality. Will she be able to resist the call, or will the promise of perfection prove too strong to ignore? If she’s not careful, she may end up going missing herself.

Calling on the Matchmaker ~ Review

Calling on the Matchmaker
A Shanahan Match #1
By Jody Hedlund

Finola Shanahan is determined to take her vows and become a nun. She can't be trusted to be a mother, and what man wants to marry such a woman. If only she could convince her parents of this, but they are equally determined to see her happily wed.

After twelve failed courtships, her parents call in the local matchmaker. Attempting to use her normal means of again thwarting her parents' plans, she manages to manipulate the situation by getting a young inexperienced matchmaker to take her on. What she didn't expect was to have the matchmaker pick Riley Rafferty as her potential husband.

Having rescued Finola from certain death, mere days ago, Riley is more than a little surprised when a deathbed promise to his father has the Irish matchmaker proposing a match between him and Finola. Not that he objects. Since rescuing Finola, she's been constantly on his mind.

Surprisingly the two have a shared care for the ever-increasing immigrant population of St. Louis's slums. But Finola refuses to allow this fact to sway her resolve to break the engagement. But Riley proves a formidable opponent able to match wits with Finola in her efforts. If only she could convince her heart that she doesn't have feelings for Riley and that he can easily transfer his attention to another more worthy.

Calling on the Matchmaker is the first book in the new series from Historical Fiction favorite Jody Hedlund. Those who love Jody's work will not be disappointed with her newest offering. This was also an interesting bit of history as it deals with matchmakers, my only familiarity with it is watching Fiddler on the Roof, so totally different.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

PRAISE FOR CALLING ON THE MATCHMAKER

 “Hedlund’s textured historical backdrop brings the city’s Irish tenements to life, and the romance between Finola and Riley, full of longing and barely contained passion (“She was like a fire burning down a building. And he was walking straight into the flames”), is a treat. Readers will revel in this charming romp.”—Publisher’s Weekly

Trust the Stars ~ Review

Trust the Stars
By Tricia Goyer

This is one of those books that just draws you into it. I love books that are both contemporary and historical fiction, which Trust the Stars is. The two stories are drawn together by a diary Princess Alessandra Appiani kept detailing the dangers she faced and the sacrifices she made during WW2 to help save those in need.

The contemporary portion focuses on Olivia Garza, a young woman, scarred by the decisions her mother made. But Olivia is on a journey of discovery. She wants, needs to understand her mother and is sharing this journey with the world via a podcast.

Enter a stranger who manages to touch Olivia's life. But said stranger is actually a royal from a little known European country who needs to avoid a wedding. A wedding for the woman he thought he'd marry. In the one day that they Louis and Olivia connect. All is going great until Olivia finds out who Louis is and she cuts out of her excursion to Kenya less than pleased with Louis. After all how can someone used to the life and privileges of a royal possibly understand her normal day-to-day life of working with troubled teens in Little Rock's inner city?

This is where the diary comes in and I really enjoyed Alessandra's portion of the story. Her strength even in the face of losing everything she held dear - her husband, her children, and even her life. Her story provides inspiration to not only the reader, but Olivia. Sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zone to do the right thing.

Highly recommended read to either end 2023 or to begin 2024.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thought expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Olivia Garza, a woman committed to making a difference in the world, thrives in her unconventional, service-oriented life. By day, she helps troubled teens in inner-city Little Rock. By night, she creates a viral docu-series in an attempt to better understand her mother’s desperate decisions by retracing her steps with a camera. So far, Olivia has always been the anonymous narrator, but she’s promised to reveal herself in the last stop on her Kenya.

Prince Louis, heir to the throne of the small European kingdom of Alloria, is in Kenya to run away from a broken heart—and the media circus that comes with it. When he meets Olivia, he recognizes her voice right away from the docu-series that has stirred his heart. Though they share a magical day on safari, any dreams of happily ever after come crashing down with the flash of the paparazzi cameras when Olivia realizes that he represents everything she most despises in the world.

In World War II, Rome, another royal, however, has her own life-changing choices to make. Princess Alessandra Appiani could have chosen quiet safety within the walls of the Vatican, but instead, she risks her life—and her family—to save the Jewish children so in need of someone to show them the love of God.

When Olivia is hired to help create a documentary about Alessandra, learning about the sacrifice of a royal who goes from palace to prison forces her to face the hard questions of, "Should she continue on the path she’s carved for herself or trust God to give her the future she never thought she wanted?"

To Destroy an Illusion ~ Review

To Destroy an Illusion:
A Glass Mountain Retelling
The Shattered Tales #11
By Kendra E Ardnek

Isobel's life is merely one of existence. She lives within a glass palace that provides for her needs and her reflection is her companion until the day that Kieran appears.

When Kieran is present she begins to remember another life, but when he leaves they slip away. But slowly she begins to retain what was lost. But does she want to remember what was with its trickery and pain?

As a pawn Isobel's life was not her own, but as it is now it is incomplete. Kieran holds the answers she needs but he is bound to silence in matters that could set her free.

To Destroy an Illusion is a intriguing and imaginative retelling of the Glass Mountain. How can one determine the truth when surrounded by illusion and the past is shrouded? Isobel will have to work her way through the tangle of secrets, lies, and glamour that have wrapped her within their spell for far too long if she hopes to discover the truth and free the man she loves.

This is a clean retelling that will delight any fan of fairytale retellings even if you are unfamiliar with the original. I highly recommend this book as the characters are engaging and the settings gorgeous. As part of the Shattered Tales collection this book can be read in any order or on its own as each book is complete in and of itself.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations, but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Surrounded by glass and glamour, how can you know what's real?

Now Isobel's life is perfect - as long as she doesn't look too closely at the cracks in the glass. Yet, it's a lonely life, so when a charming young man takes the place of her reflection and speaks with her, she's glad for the companionship, even if his secrets threaten to topple everything she knows. Just how did she come to live in this glass palace?

Before Kieran might play the part of the roguish younger prince, but he takes seriously his role as the last line of defense against threats to his parents and brother. When Lothilla brings her goddaughter to court wrapped in too much glamour, and his brother falls for the girl too quickly, he knows that something must be wrong. But what can he do against the power of an elder fae?

Secrets and mystery abound, and who knows the truth under the perfection? What will stay standing when the illusion is destroyed? To Destroy an Illusion is a retelling of “The Glass Mountain” but also contains heavy inspiration from “Fairer-than-a-Fairy,” “The Glass Coffin,” and a few other fairy tales you might know and love.

It is one of twelve novellas in The Shattered Tales, a collection of fractured retellings of your favorite fairytales. The Shattered Tales can be enjoyed in any order, so fall in love with the swoony-sweet romance, magical adventures, and tale-shattering twists one happily-ever-after at a time!

Cyanide and Sensibility ~ Review

Cyanide and Sensibility
The Jane Austen Tea Society Mystery #3
By Katie Oliver

It's the grand opening of Phaedra Brighton's sister's new patisserie, Tout de Sweet. Everything is going along perfectly until someone sets off the fire alarm. Some added excitement to be sure, but nothing too awful. At least, not until that poor girl took the smallest taste of one of Hannah's to-die-for dark chocolate cupcakes, and, well, to-die-for actually happened. This will be a most unforgettable grand opening and one that could dash all of Hannah's dreams when her patisserie is closed and marked as a crime scene.

Well, Phaedra isn't about to stay on the sidelines and do nothing. No, it is not to be borne! With the help of her close friends in the Jane Austen Tea Society, she's going to solve this case. Was Anna Steele the intended target, or
was it instead her boss Rachel Brandon? Or had someone close to Phaedra been the intended victim?

Cyanide and Sensibility is the third book in The Jane Austen Tea Society Mystery series, and the book can easily be read as a standalone title, if you haven't read the first two books. Phaedra is often referred to as Professor as that is what she is specifically a professor of English literature and a noted Jane Austen scholar, who often dressed the part to bring a special touch to her lectures. Phaedra has a talent for getting herself mixed up in murder mysteries and, as such, has to get involved in trying to solve the case herself. Not that local Detective Morelli appreciates her efforts. On the contrary, he discourages Phaedra's sleuthing endeavors.

This is an easy read with a contemporary setting. If you are a fan of cozy mysteries or love anything that references Jan Austen, you'll want to make this your next read. And with the story taking place during the Christmas season, it will be perfect to read now. The story is engaging, and the characters are personable (my personal favorite is Detective Morelli). I would recommend this title without reservation.

All of Laurel Springs is out in full force to celebrate the grand unveiling of Hannah's new patisserie, Tout de Sweet, including local celebrity Rachel Brandon. Hannah is a master of her craft, with confections so divine, one bite will make you think you've died and gone to heaven.

Of course, you never want that to happen literally.

When one of Hannah's famous dark chocolate cupcakes sends Rachel's assistant to the hospital with poisoning, Hannah begs for Phaedra's help to save her reputation and budding business. But Phaedra has more questions than answers: Who was the cupcake actually meant for? And how far is the culprit willing to go to take their target off the menu—permanently?

Something Borrowed
A Cornwall Brides Novel #3
By Rebecca Connolly

Years ago, Gage Trembath had his heartbroken when the woman he had planned a future with married someone else. But he has decided to move past his broken heart and marry. A love match isn't in his future, but he feels he's found a woman to suit - Honora Berkeley.

Honora is a woman despised. Her parents have never forgiven her for not being born a son or for being born at all. Her only moments of peace are when her parents are gone living their own lives. Convinced that she will be forever trapped in this meaningless life of rejection and ridicule, she is more than a little shocked when Gage makes an offer for her hand. And even more shocked when he doesn't rescind the offer after a meal with her parents.

Knowing Gage will never love her, Honora agrees to his offer. But the past has a firm grip on her, convincing her she'll never be enough. But Gage being Gage is determined to help Honora find herself, the self that has been buried beneath the lies that have ruled her life.

As Honora discovers herself, she makes friendships that allow healing and show her that love is as much a choice as it is a feeling.

This is the third book in the Cornwall Brides series and while reading the book in order is best, one can read this book as a standalone title. The characters are engaging, and one can connect with them as they work through their hurts and fears. Because fear is most definitely a force in this book - fear of rejection, fear of never being enough, fear of loss. And then there is love and its power to heal and overcome fear, but only if it is allowed to take root and grow. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to fans of Regency era fiction.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book in with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book

Forsaking all others…

Gage Trembath is getting married. He is the only one who knows it, but the statement is
true, nonetheless. The woman he had once loved has been married elsewhere for a
time, and he can put off his own marriage no longer. The woman he has chosen to
marry, without love, is sensible, quiet, musical, and amenable, which should enable him
to have a good marriage and a content life. That is all he wants now, and Honora
Berkeley makes the most sense.

Honora cannot believe that a handsome and wealthy man like Gage has any interest at
all in marrying her, even without love. She certainly has very little to recommend her,
but escaping her life of criticism and abandonment is something she cannot resist. But
what about the woman Gage had once loved? The one who was perfect for him and the
one who made him determined to abandon love? Are his feelings for her truly gone?
Will Honora ever have his affection along with his respect?

Is a convenient, sensible marriage what Gage wants? Or will his capacity for love reignite under Honora’s influence?

The Warsaw Sisters ~ Review

The Warsaw Sisters
A Novel of WWII Poland
By Amanda Barratt

This book opens as war has come to Poland's borders with Antonina and Helena DÄ…browska sending off their father to serve as a soldier against the German threat of invasion. But mere hours later hour war has come to Warsaw, soon they face two enemies as German and Russian forces surround the nation. In a day their childhood has passed into adulthood with its new trials and challenges.

But Antonia and Helena are not about to let their country fall without a fight. But both decide to take action in their own way. Unfortunately the paths they both choose require them to keep secrets from one another, and these secrets threaten the bond between them.

This is the first book I have read by the author, Amanda Barratt and I have to recommend it. The writing style is engaging. This is a book of sacrifice and loss set between 1939-1945. This is an emotionally moving read as Antonia and Helena make their way in a world in turmoil. But doing the right thing isn't easy, especially when faced with certain death if their efforts are discovered.

While this was a good and well-researched book, I couldn't find myself connecting personally with any of the characters. But the story still offered moments that spoke to me. The book opened slowly as the setting and characters took form, but once it got into the main portion of the story it had an easier flow and I was able to get more fully into the story. For those who enjoy WW2 fiction I highly recommend this book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

In WWII Poland, two sisters fight against the darkness engulfing their homeland, one by entering a daring network of women sheltering Jewish children and the other by joining the ranks of Poland's secret army. As Warsaw buckles under German oppression, they must rely on the courage that calls the ordinary to resist.

On a golden August morning in 1939, sisters Antonina and Helena DÄ…browska send their father off to defend Poland against the looming threat of German invasion. The next day, the first bombs fall on Warsaw, decimating their beloved city and shattering the world of their youth.

When Antonina's beloved Marek is forced behind ghetto walls along with the rest of Warsaw's Jewish population, Antonina turns her worry into action and becomes a key figure in a daring network of women risking their lives to shelter Jewish children. Helena finds herself drawn into the ranks of Poland's secret army, joining the fight to free her homeland from occupation. But the secrets both are forced to keep threaten to tear the sisters apart--and the cost of resistance proves greater than either ever imagined.

Shining a light on the oft-forgotten history of Poland during WWII and inspired by true stories of ordinary individuals who fought to preserve freedom and humanity in the darkest of times, The Warsaw Sisters is a richly rendered portrait of courage, sacrifice, and the resilience of our deepest ties.

Her Secret Hope is an excellent read. This book delves into the feelings that can plague someone who has been adopted. Not knowing why has a way of affecting the way one thinks, feels, and interacts with and around others. This book is moving and in a way explains Lilly desire to please and do her best. When an incident occurs and her new life is thrown into disarray, Lilly is faced with a choice - run from the past yet again or face it.

I really enjoyed this book. The depths of emotion that were presented as Lilly faced new challenges were moving. One could feel her anguish when accusations were made against her. Her shock at being treated as she was. The adage of the customer is always right even when they are wrong is on full display here and such a policy is most definitely wrong if absolutely enforced all the time. Let's just say I would have been in tears too.

This is the best book in the series, and can be read as a standalone title if you haven't read the previous two books. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys contemporary or Amish fiction.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Almost two years after Lilly Kurtz first traveled to Pinecraft, Florida, with friends, she's decided to make a fresh start there. She's ready to be new-and-improved Lilly, a Lilly without a past, a Lilly with no secrets. At first, everything goes well. She gets a job, her coworkers feel like family, and she enjoys reconnecting with her friends. But it turns out the past is reluctant to be left behind.

When Lilly meets hardworking farmer Eddie Byler, she can't get him off of her mind. But then she discovers that Eddie actually lives just a few miles from her hometown in Ohio. Lilly knows that he's not going to like it when he finds out what secrets she's been running from. And she knows she could never follow the man she's falling in love with back to a place where she's never felt accepted.

Will Lilly have to give up on love in order to find peace? Or could it be that love is actually the solution to all of her problems?

To Rival a Reflection ~ Review

To Rival a Reflection
A Snow White Retelling
The Shattered Tales #10
By Selina De Luca

Snow White knows she is destined for great things. and when an Enchantress offers her the chance to become the fairest in the world, she accepts. But there is just one little stipulation: if someone fairer is found, Snow White is out. And the Enchantress's promise of marriage to a prince will disappear.

Following her deal with the Enchantress, Snow's life is a lonely existence. There are memories that are fleeting of what she used to have, before her father disappeared. Before she found the mirror that tempted her. Before she agreed to pay the Enchantress's price for magical beauty. But is loneliness worthy a beauty that separates her from her village, from friendship, and any close contact with a living being. A chance encounter with dwarves gives her something to consider.

But when everything is threatened by her own reflection, Snow must fight for everything she holds dear, or Jardonia will fall to her wicked rival. A rival that she alone knows best. How do you fight yourself? Snow has to decide how best to proceed or the curse she has placed herself under may win.

To Rival a Reflection is an interesting retelling of Snow White. There is no wicked stepmother. Everything is Snow White. She is both protagonist and antagonist in this unique twist. How do you defeat yourself when you have been grooming and objectifying your egotistical self for years?

The magical elements that dominate Snow's world are both helpful and isolating. And then there is the mirror and the Enchantress it summons/homes. There elements from the original that are easily recognizable but the presentation is unique. I've read several Snow White retellings and this is definitely original. Another addition to The Shatter Tales collection.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

What if Snow White wanted to be the fairest of them all?

As the daughter of the king’s ambassador to Appledale and the prettiest girl in Jardonia, Snow White has always believed herself worthy of a prestigious destiny. When an Enchantress appears to Snow White through a mirror and offers her enchanted gifts and the promise of queendom, she is eager to accept the honor of being the Fairest One of All. There is just one catch: should someone fairer come along, she must forfeit her position as Fairest One—and lose the chance to marry a prince and become queen.

When her reflection begins to fade until it disappears altogether and shows up at her door as the new Fairest One, Snow White begins to see the curse beneath the Enchantress’s empty promises. With her own reflection vying for a place on the throne, Snow White must fight to protect Jardonia from this wicked rival and to keep the love of the prince who has captured her heart.

Will Snow White be able to overcome the curse of the magic mirror? Or will she forever suffer from the bitter poison of her own conceit?

To Rival a Reflection is a retelling of Snow White with inspiration from The Shadow. It is one of twelve novellas in The Shattered Tales, a collection of twelve fractured retellings of your favorite fairy tales. They can be enjoyed in any order, so fall in love with the swoony sweet romance, magical adventures, and tale-shattering twists one happily-ever-after at a time!

A Brilliant Match ~ Review

A Brilliant Match
The Earl's Sisters #1
By Jennie Goutet

Lady Dorothea Rowlandson is determined to make a match this season. She needs to if she hopes to save her family from themselves. Her father's death the previous year delayed her debut into Society and she will do everything possible to ensure her younger sisters success with her own successful marriage. And then her brother as a 13-year-old earl is most definitely in need of her help.

Miles Shaw is in need of a wife with a large dowry. His estate is in shambles and the only way to save it is with an influx of funds. And he is determined to let his heart do the choosing for him. And the lady who catches his eye is Lady Dorothea Rowland.

Dorothea is determined that her heart not be turned by anyone. And Miles Shaw is not on her list of eligible men. Unfortunately Miles is most persistent and her heart refuses to listen to her head and its logical dictates.

A Brilliant Match is a delightful series debut. Dorothea's has misconstrued her place and duty to her family. She is determined to have everyone fall into the plans she has set into place. But the first thing to go awry is her young brother's early arrival in London, but as the Earl her brother is equally determined to make his feelings known on matters he deems important. I think my favorite moment comes when Miles confronts Dorothea concerning her view of her family and her perceived limitations regarding them. I loved getting glimpses of her sisters and their personalities and look forward to better getting acquainted with them at a later date (additional books in the series).

I think what is most telling is how Dorothea allowed her father to shape her and her views of others. This is the driving force behind her decisions and choices. And considering how she viewed him, extremely interesting. I will admit Dorothea was hard to get to like. She had moments that made one feel a connection and then the moment was gone. While I did like Miles from the beginning. He was a caring and kind person. He went out of his way to make Dorothea's family feel that they mattered, that they were important just because they were alive. While this is a work of fiction and an enjoyable one at that, it is also a study of the human heart and mind. What makes one do a certain thing and not another.

About the Book:

A love match would not do.
She would make an advantageous match—a brilliant match!

At the age of 19, Lady Dorothea Rowlandson was practically on the shelf. Had she not suffered her father, the earl’s, untimely death weeks before last year’s season, she would surely by now be a married lady—the established wife of an illustrious peer.

With such a regrettable delay, time was ever more of the essence if she wished to secure her own future and that of her sisters.

Miles Shaw holds an encumbered estate. It is only logical, therefore, that he commence the London Season on the hunt for a well-dowered wife. His personal code of honor requires he be upfront about this goal, so that he deceives no one. And as he fully intends to love and cherish the wife of his choosing, he will naturally bring as much to the union as he receives. After all, he is a landed gentleman with no shortage of charm.

When chance forced Miles and Dorothea to partner one another for the first dance of the first crush of the season, Fortuna could only have been in a funning mood. To have fostered so unsuitable a connection was nothing short of absurd. For what could a peer of the realm’s daughter and a gentleman of no consequence, with his pockets to let, possibly have in common?

In the Shadows #1

Tane Temauri has lost his partner when an op goes bad, and now he is on his own until the dust settles and he can finish what he needs to get done. But the man responsible for his friend's death is determined to bring Tane in. He has plans for him, and they aren't good.

But a letter from Lia changes everything.

Lia Swanson's chance meeting leads to her writing a quickly scrawled note. A note that goes to the wrong man. But the man most in need of a connection with anyone. Proof that there are no accidents in life and that there is purpose behind everything whether it be good or bad.

Both Lia and Take are in need of something genuine and the very nature of how they "meet" provides a moment of normalcy, a chance to see and be seen beyond the outer mask. But such exposes them both to danger, danger that could cost them their very lives.

This is the first book of the In the Shadows series, which is aptly is aptly named as both Tane and Lia live in the shadows. Both struggle with the confines life has placed on them and it is interesting to see how they deal with it.

This is a read for those who want Romantic Suspense. And it does keep the suspense going throughout. This one won't keep you up into the wee hours of the night reading unless you get caught in the just-one-more-chaper trap.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I give my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
