A Haunting at Linley ~ Review

A Haunting at Linley
A Henrietta and Inspector Howard Mystery #7
By Michelle Cox

So first off this is the first book in the series that I have read. I will say that reading the previous books would have been a good first step as there are backstories that would have more fully explained the current situations of the various characters. That being said this book can still be enjoyed on its own if one doesn't mind a bit of a mystery about the backstory, which is kind of like meeting new people. I know I don't quiz people to tedium just to learn their whole life story upon meeting them, so I was good reading this book as a standalone title.

Clive and Henrietta Howard are drawn to mysteries and there is a bit of a mystery at the home of Clive's cousin. Wallace has invited Clive to Linley Castle, which is facing an inheritance tax (two as it was left to his mother). Yes, Linley Castle doesn't have the financial resources to sustain itself for much longer.

But when they arrive Henrietta feels as though something is off about the home. Could Lady Linley, Aunt Margaret be right, could a ghost be haunting the castle. Being who she is Henrietta can't leave things as they are and soon she and Clive are caught up in another mystery.

Now there are other parallel stories taking place (this is where I regretted  not reading the previous books). Though intriguing I found myself more drawn to Henrietta and Clive's portion of the story. I liked the mystery and the various characters and their reactions to the events around them just added to the draw, in my opinion. Are there nefarious deeds taking place at Linley? Or does a ghost (or two) indeed walk the grounds?

And the cover alone should be a draw when deciding to at least give this book a perusal. I mean look at it - a mysterious woman dressed so she can't be totally identified. Is she dressed as a bride with her wedding veil? Is it her ghostly disguise? There is only one way to know. Read the book and discover the answers you seek.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This would be a PG-13+ read in my opinion.

About the Book:
In this seventh book of the series, Clive and Henrietta return to England to find Castle Linley in financial ruin. When Clive’s cousin, Wallace, invites an estate agent in to assess the home’s value, the agent is later found poisoned, throwing all of the Castle’s guests into suspicion. Clive and Henrietta are soon drawn into an investigation, which is slowed by an incompetent local inspector and several unexplained phenomena—the cause of which many, especially the frail Lady Linley, believe to be the workings of the ghost of a hanged maid.

Meanwhile, Gunther and Elsie have begun  life on a farm in Omaha. Circumstances are difficult, but they are content—until Oldrich Exely appears, proposing an option Elsie finds difficult to ignore.  Melody Merriweather, still masquerading as a nun to aid Elsie’s escape, likewise finds it difficult to ignore a letter with tragic news from home, while Julia, on the other hand, receives a very different sort of letter from Glenn Forbes.

Back in England, Clive is called away to London on suspicious business, leaving Henrietta to carry on with the investigation alone.  When she is mysteriously locked in the study one night, however, things take on a more deadly, supernatural feel, leaving her to fear that  Lady Linley's “ghost” might just be real after all…

Jane and the Final Mystery ~ Review

Jane and the Final Mystery
Being a Jane Austen Mystery #15
By Stephanie Barron

First, I must admit this is my first Being a Jane Austen Mystery book, and unfortunately, it is also the final book in the series. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was quick and easy to get into without any previous knowledge of the series.

The book is written in the language and style of Jane Austen herself, which gives it an authentic feel. I'm always surprised how language and spelling evolve over time and yet one can easily slip into what was with little to no effort.

This book is set during the final months of Jane's life as her health fails, but when the son of a dear friend asks for help, Jane obliges, as is her nature. To see a young man destroyed when another is found dead raises her to the occasion. But the very environment and culture of Winchester College has lent itself to hazing and abuse of younger students. And when one of the most volatile of the bullies is found dead, his latest victim is accused of, if not doing the deed, of driving his tormentor to the taking of his own life. Yeah, right, blame the poor smaller kid who has no money to his name, sounds perfectly reasonable. Jane is of the same thought, though with better wording, and is determined to seek out the truth. With Jane and her nephew Edward on the case, the truth will surely come out, though it may prove a touch dangerous.

This was an enjoyable read, and seeing Jane Austen as a detective was fun. This book was most definitely able to be read as a standalone title. But since I just discovered this series at the very end, I have a new series and author to add to my TBR list. A very long list, I might add.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Running to You ~ Review

Running to You JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Running to You by Robin Patchen hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Running to You

Running to You
The Wright Heroes of Maine #1
By Robin Patchen

Five years ago, she left him with a broken heart. Now Eliza is back and has no idea that she left him and seemingly disappeared without a trace.

Sam Wright has moved on from the one woman he was mere moments away from proposing to. Or he thought he had. But Eliza is back and she needs him to help keep her safe.

There is just one little problem. Well, actually it's a rather big problem. Eliza has no idea where she's been for the last five years. And no idea why anyone would be after her. So, yeah, keeping her safe is a really big problem. Especially since they seem to know where she is! No question about it, Sam just might need to spend some of his money to keep her safe and to get answers, answers he may not like.

Running to You is a suspense-filled read that keeps the reader guessing as to what exactly going on and why Eliza is in danger. Partial bits and pieces are slowly revealed as her memory slowly comes back. But often what she remembers leaves more questions.

Now as Sam attempts to help Eliza figure out what is going on, what happened, etc. he has some serious issues. The main being his anger at Eliza having left him. Eliza saw something and per Sam never gave him a chance to explain. Well, when the truth comes out (memory is revealed) one can understand Eliza's reaction to a point. And yet her sudden decision is what put her in the position she now finds herself in.

I have to be honest, I really didn't connect with Sam. Some of his attitude just really rubbed me wrong and I can't see why Eliza liked him, but she did, and we got a story out of it. I did like the mystery/suspense aspects of the book. As for Sam's brothers I look forward to learning more about them in future books in this series.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Sam never understood why Eliza left him five years ago, ghosting him without explanation. He’s avoided romance ever since, focusing on building his business. Money might not keep him warm at night, but it can sure buy a lot of blankets.

Then Eliza shows up on his doorstep and throws herself into his arms. She can’t explain her bruises or the head injury that’s left her with no memories of the past five years, including their breakup. No matter how good it feels to hold her, though, there’s no way he’s getting sucked into romance again.

He’ll deliver Eliza to her mother, and that will be that. But instead of finding her mom, they’re met by two attackers and barely escape alive. Despite the danger to his life and his heart, he can’t leave Eliza to fend for herself.

Together, they embark on a journey to reconstruct her past while evading the men chasing her. As Sam and Eliza close in on the truth, their romance reignites, but her secret threatens to destroy them both.

Lost and Found ~ Review

Lost and Found
By Suzanne Woods Fisher

Sometimes we allow the holds of the past to take root and keep us from actually moving on, from growing up. This is a story of friendship that has the hope of becoming something more, until a message from the past convinces Micah Weaver to take actions he might not have.

Trudy Yoder has long had feelings for Micah. But for years Micah could only see her older sister Shelley. But their shared enjoyment over birding, finding that one unique bird, locating a hidden nest has allowed them to form a friendship. And now Trudy has hopes for a future with Micah. But then Shelley intrudes even though she is miles and miles way. And until Micah can truly decide what he wants she will always be a second choice.

This book is set in Stoney Ridge, which is a little like visiting a familiar haunt. The setting and characters are comfortable and known (IF you've read any of the author's other Stoney Ridge books /series). And what is nice about this book is if you haven't read any previous Stoney Ridge books you can fully enjoy this one. The author writes in such a way that each book can be read as a standalone title. The story is complete in and of itself.

I feel that that this book is a story about growing up. Yes, Micah is in all senses of the word a grown-up but he needs to mature internally. He needs to make the decision to move on in his life to the next place that he needs to be. This doesn't mean physically moving, though it is a possibility for those living in Stoney Ridge. No rather this is a mental moving forward, a mindset to move on to the next phase of his life. And this journey is one that offers a most intriguing story in the process.

I really like books that are about internal growth. And no this isn't a self-help book but rather in the entertaining it provides an opportunity to look internally at one's own life. And it is just a subtle thread so if you are reading just for the story it isn't something that will jump out and go "Look at this. Key moment of internal change coming up." No I think it is something that is all about mindset and during the reading certain scenes they just clicked with me.

But no matter how you read this was an enjoyable book and one I would recommend. It isn't a heavy read and easily read over a few days or if you like to consume your books as soon as you get them a long afternoon could certainly be undertaken and enjoyed. And the title Lost and Found perfectly suits.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Trudy Yoder shares a passion for birding with Micah Weaver--and she has an even greater passion for Micah. Their friendship is finally turning romantic when Micah abruptly grows cold. Worse still, he wants to leave Stoney Ridge.

Micah Weaver thought he was over Trudy's older sister. A year and a half ago, Shelley had broken his heart when she ran away from Stoney Ridge to pursue a singing career in Nashville. Then, out of the blue, she's started to leave distressing phone messages for him.

When the bishop asks for volunteers to scout out a possible church relocation in Tennessee, Micah is the first to raise his hand. Despite scant details, he's confident he can find Shelley. After all, his reputation as a field guide is based on finding birds that don't want to be found.

What Micah doesn't know is that what you're looking for isn't always what you find.

Shadows at Dusk ~ Review

Shadows at Dusk
Missing in Alaska #2
By Elizabeth Goddard

Shadows at Dusk is the second book in the Missing in Alaska series, and I just have to say danger seems intent on calling Alaska home. That's not to say it doesn't lurk elsewhere but goodness the dangerous doings are rather frightening, makes me think couch travel through videos is the way to go. Not really. the descriptive detail of the scenery actually makes me want to travel there despite the on-page that exists.

This time, we get to know Carrie James, thanks to Police Chief Autumn Long directing Detective Trevor West to her. Trevor calls Montana home, but a year his sister went missing there, and a newly discovered clue has drawn him to Alaska in search of answers. And Alaska, being Alaska, travel by water plane is the only way to get to some of the remote locations he needs to see.

This book is most definitely high on the Suspense factor, with a liberal pinch of romance blended in. But when danger and tragedy hit close to home, Carrie needs Trevor to help her bring a murderer to justice. Could they be searching for answers that will open a whole new pile of problems? Or will they be able to put the past and its dark secrets firmly where they belong,  in the past?

Once again, Elizabeth Goddard has created a world that intrigues and delights the senses. The characters have dimensional depth, which helps draw one more fully into the book. This is a page-turning, late-night read fest waiting to happen as soon as the book is opened. This is sure to be a book club win!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Montana Detective Trevor West is desperate to learn what happened to his sister, who went missing in Alaska over a year ago, leaving nothing but a few photographs as clues to her whereabouts. At the advice of Police Chief Autumn Long, Trevor enlists the help of an experienced bush pilot. If Carrie James can't help him find the places in the photographs, no one can.

But Carrie has her own agenda. Grieving the death of her closest friend and the only person she could trust, Carrie will help Trevor find his sister on one condition--that he help her track down her friend's killer.

As the two close in on the answers they crave, they'll face dangers and connections they could not have imagined. They'll have to learn to trust one another--and face the dark secrets of the past--if they are ever to discover the truth and bring a killer to justice.

The Secrets Beneath ~ Review

The Secrets Beneath
Treasures of the Earth #1
By Kimberley Woodhouse

The Secrets Beneath is a historical fiction piece set in 1870s Montana, within the Wyoming Territory. It is a time when everything discovered is truly unique and awe-inspiring. In this world, we are introduced to an intriguing cast of characters who contrast sharply with one another.

Anna Lakeman has spent years working alongside her father, a paleontologist. Working as the illustrator for his digs, Anna isn't your normal 19th-century young lady. She loves what she does and supports the field of study in the only way she can - through her drawings.  Three years ago, her heart was broken when Joshua Ziegler left.

When Joshua left to pursue his medical education, he spoke out against Anna's work on her father's digs. Returning home for a short break, Joshua can only hope to make it right with Anna or at least ask for her forgiveness. But when Anna's father falls ill, and Joshua's nephew goes missing, fate seems to be conspiring against them.

And then there is Julian Walker, considered odd by everyone and the son of Old Walker, the meanest, wealthiest man in the region. One feels for Julian Walker, his background, and the opinions of those who live nearby, well, it all adds up to a sad history. And yet, one can't blame those who know him, though "know" is inadequate when considering his limited interactions with the community.

So, let me say I really enjoyed this book. The setting was beautifully described while not bogging one down in too much detail. And then, one can feel moments of terror as Anna struggles to withstand the force that is trying to destroy her. (Yes, you need to read the book because any more info will ruin the suspense).  The characters drive this story with their varied personalities, full of depths waiting to come to life as one progresses through the book.

If you like your books to be a well-balanced blend of genres, this book will take care of that. Romance, Mystery, Suspense, Inspiration, and History all come together beautifully in this book. I was drawn in from the opening lines.

This is the first book in the Treasures of the Earth series, and it promises to be a most enlightening and enjoyable reading experience. This book is one I would highly recommend to anyone who loves historical fiction with a touch of suspense and mystery.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Garden of the Midnights ~ Review

Garden of the Midnights
By Hannah Linder

Twenty plus years ago he was threatened with the truth, a truth he wanted buried. And now he has to face what he had tried to avoid.

William Kensley has never wanted to be someplace but Rosenleigh Manor. But when accidents suddenly start befalling him he must confort the ugly truth - the accidents are no accident. Could someone be trying to kill him? But why? Believing the truth behind his unknown father could hold the key, he sets off to learn what he can.

What he learns will shatter his world.

Isabella Gresham is expected to marry well, her father has expectations for her. But Isabella has expectations as well, and giving away her heart isn't one of them. When she meets William there is something between them, something that will bring her an unexpected joy and enjoyment of life. But circumstances being what they are prevent even a thought of romance.

There is danger that stalks them both, and unless they can discover the truths long buried it may destroy them both.

This was a excellent read from Hannah Linder. This is the first book have read by her, though I will admit to have two of her other books in my TBR pile next to my bed. Guess which books are moving there way up the stack.

This book was a wonderful blend of Suspense, History, Romance, and Inspiration. Both Isabella and William have been brought up in a web of lies. Lies that when one strand is pulled free starts to unravel all around it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something new.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

their reckless adventures, has he anything at all?

He should have known that would be ripped from him too. When a hidden foe arises
from their acquaintances and imperils Isabella’s life, William may be the only one willing
to risk his life to rescue her. But even if he frees Isabella from her captors, will he still
have to forsake her heart?

Some sacrifice everything for love. Others sacrifice love for everything else. In this
haunting tale of rigid social prejudices and heart-aching regrets, the greatest decision of
their life will be determined in the garden of the midnights.

A Royal Christmas ~ Review

A Royal Christmas

A Christmas Novella
by Melody Carlson

You know Christmas is coming when you get a Melody Carlson Christmas title in hand, and yes, I know Christmas is still a couple of months away. But I love reading Christmas books, and when the weather is way too hot, it makes me think it's cooler while I'm reading. So, win-win in my mind.

Now, Melody Carlson has created a unique twist on the royal-who-doesn't-know-they-are-a-royal storyline by bringing modern science into the mix, specifically a DNA registry. And now the fun begins. Because most people are going to at least question this as some sort of phishing attempt, even momentarily and Adelaide Smith definitely has questions.

Adelaide is a dedicated and hard worker who has been working in a coffee shop to help put herself through law school. Having never had much, Adelaide knows had to scrimp to make ends meet and is more than a little shocked when she gets an official-looking letter informing her she is the daughter of a king.

Having been the daughter of a nurse, to suddenly be the daughter of a king is more than hard to believe. Adalaide feels as if she's been pulled into a fairy tale, or a Hallmark movie.  She now has a stepmother who is the queen is less than pleased at her appearance and icy, totally fitting the fairy-tale stepmother role. And then there is her stepbrother Prince Georg, who is best experienced personally while reading this book.

Montovia is a quaint small nation that thoroughly captures Adalaide's imagination. As she tries to get to know her father in the time they have, Adelaide must navigate a new culture and a tenuous family situation, all while trying to avoid any royal missteps. And just when it seems to be settling into a routine, Adelaide overhears something that shakes things up and brings loyalties into question. This will be one Christmas she'll never forget!  And it wouldn't be a Melody Carlson Christmas book without a little bit of romance.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Adelaide Smith is too busy for fairy tales. She's been working hard to put herself through law school and now that the end is in sight, she's determined to stay focused on her goals. Then she receives a letter notifying her that she has been found through a DNA registry to be a direct descendant of King Maximillian V, the ruler of a small Eastern European principality called Montovia. She's understandably skeptical. This is the stuff of cheesy made-for-TV movies, not real life.

Although the pieces of this surprising family puzzle seem too good to be true, curiosity gets the best of her. At the king's invitation, Adelaide embarks on a Christmas break trip that is chock-full of surprises, including a charming village, an opulent palace, family mysteries, royal jealousies, a handsome young member of Parliament--and the chance at a real fairy tale romance with a happily-ever-after ending.

Spend this Christmas with bestselling author Melody Carlson as she whisks you away to a royal holiday you'll never forget!

The Legacy of Longdale Manor ~ Review

The Legacy of Longdale Manor
By Carrie Turansky

When Gwen Morris makes a costly error she is sent to England's Lake District in a hope to redeem herself and get out of the public's eye. What she never expected was to find a link to her own family. With questions about her father she sets off on a journey of discovery while at Longdale Manor. But some questions are almost impossible to answer when secrets are closely guarded. But with the help of David Bradford, grandson of the owner of Longdale Manor, Gwen looks for what may be long hidden away in the rescesses of the home.

Charlotte Harper is doing what she can to see that her mother and sister are provided for. But in 1912 any meaningful employment for women is nearly impossible to find. Fortunately the Storey family has offered them a place in their home. And as Charlotte grows closer to Ian she has to deal with what she sees as a betrayal. And this betrayal will have an affect on her life and her decisions. But can all of life be judged by another's deceit? This is something that Charlotte will have to discover before she can move forward.

I love how these two story threads are woven together. The questions that both Gwen and Charlotte face are ones so many have to face at some point in life. The struggles that they face and their reactions to disappointments along the way make the journey meaningful when we get to the end. Was it worth the fight that they put forth? Or a fruitless endeavor? This is a lovely book that is worthy of its cover and one you won't want to miss!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own

About the Book:

Two women—a century apart—embark on a journey to healing, faith, forgiveness,

While at Longdale Manor, she meets David Bradford--the owner's handsome grandson--who is desperate to save the crumbling estate by turning it into a luxury hotel. When Gwen stumbles upon a one-hundred-year-old journal and an intricately carved shepherd's staff similar to one in a photo of her parents, she's left searching for answers.

In 1912, after her father's death, Charlotte Harper uncovers a painful family secret she can only confess to her journal. She and her family travel to the Lake District to stay on a sheep farm, hoping eventually to find a home with Charlotte's grandfather at Longdale Manor, but old wounds and bitter regrets make it a difficult challenge. As Charlotte grows closer to shepherd Ian Storey and rebuilds her shattered faith, she must decide whether she will ever trust in love again.

Rocky Mountain Rendezvous ~ Review

Rocky Mountain Rendezvous
Sisters of the Rockies #1
By Misty M. Beller

The Collins sisters are on a journey to fulfill a promise made to their dying father. He made a seemingly impossible request - return a special set of blue beads to Steps Right, a Piegan Blackfoot woman who saved his life years ago.

But traveling alone and unchaperoned isn't the safest, not when their destination is a trapper rendezvous in the Rocky Mountains and women, specifically white women, are scarce.

Juniper and her sisters are grateful for the assistance Riley Turner offers them - both protection and in looking for Steps Right. But finding a woman among so many camps proves more difficult than they had anticipated. Riley's knowledge soon proves invaluable. But a deathbed promise deserves their best efforts, and the one thing the sisters all know is they are determined to keep it.

Juniper is surprised by just how free she feels in this rough land, and she isn't the only Collins sister to feel this way. But even more surprising is the connection she feels towards Riley. With plans to return to Virgina, Juniper can't allow her heart to derail the plans she and her sisters have made.

This is was an enjoyable read that had some moments of danger. The search for Steps Right really made the story resonate for me. And the way the book ended. I can't wait for the next one. I really connected with Juniper and could appreciate her feeling of freedom. All four of the Collin sisters have a great relationship that is to be envied, and I hope they all get their own story, especially Lorelei.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
 About the book:

In 1837, Juniper Collins and her sisters are shocked by their father's deathbed request for them to return a special set of beads to a Piegan Blackfoot woman he credits with saving his life during his travels West. Together, the sisters set out for the trapper rendezvous to find the woman, but their mission turns more daunting when they come upon the mass of men and lodges spread out in the Green River Valley.

Riley Turner came West to find peace and quiet and live off the land, but when four unprotected women arrive at the rendezvous, he feels compelled to help them and is more fascinated by Juniper than any other woman he's known.

As their search brings only empty leads and dead ends, the sisters must decide whether to return East or stay in the mountains to continue looking--and that's if the mystery woman is even still alive. Is the risk to honor their father's last request worth the danger they find at every turn?

"What an adventure! Rocky Mountain Rendezvous brought the wilds of the Wyoming area and Juniper's unique story to life."--KIMBERLEY WOODHOUSE, Carol Award-winning and bestselling author

"Brimming with vivid imagery, historical details, and a compelling storyline, this is a book Misty's readers will absolutely adore."

Expired Vows
Expired Vows
Last Chance Fire and Rescue #4
By Laura Conaway
    and  Lisa Phillips

Trace Bentley thought moving to Last Chance was the answer, he could put the past with all its pain and failings behind him. And he was doing a fairly decent job of it too, until he was called on a call to a domestic disturbance. Suddenly his past walked it his life.

Kelsey Scott was called into hostage situation when one of her clients had an incident occur. But when the already too-tense situation goes off Kelsey's desired outcoming, her life goes even more off path. So now she finds herself dealing with her late BFF's husband and threats against her.

Expired Vows is the fourth book in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series, and it doesn't hold back at all bringing the reader into non-stop action. This book in no way lets the tone of the last story down. The story, settings, and characters keep it moving, which kept this reader's attention from page one. I highly recommend this book that could be read as a standalone if you haven't read the previous titles in the series. Perfect for the upcoming weekend! Rest, Relaxation, and Reading - three Rs to make for a perfect conclusion!

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations but to offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
