Until Our Time Comes ~ Review

Until Our Time Comes
A Novel of World War II Poland
By Nicole M. Miller

Adia Kensington is living a life she loves; she's the trainer of the priceless Arabians raised at the Janów Podlaski stables in Poland. But unrest lies in wait on the horizon as war with Germany moves ever closer every day. Adia will do whatever it takes to keep her beloved horses safe, even face the German army.

Bret Conway never thought he'd be affected by anyone the way his first meeting with Adia did. But when life and the threat of war get in the way of something more. Yet over the next several years, they keep coming together in unexpected ways and the horses Adia cares for are at the center of everything.

Until Our Time Comes is set in Poland and takes place between 1939 and 1946. Europe is caught in a war, and anyone and anything standing in the path of the war machines making their way across the continent will be crushed. Adia and Bret have duties and commitments that stand in the way of their finding love, although the possibility exists. The title so aptly fits their lives as they both look to a tomorrow without war, one where dreaming about the future seems as if it is a possibility rather than a hopeless dream.

This was a good read. Unlike most WW2 fiction, it has horses as the focal point, with the wider story branching out from it. It is highly recommended for readers of historical fiction. This is a book of determination and dedication.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

American horse trainer Adia Kensington is living her dream of working at the famous Janów Podlaski stables in Poland, where they breed the best Arabian horses in the world. But her plans to bring the priceless stallion Lubor to the US are derailed when the German army storms into her adopted country in 1939. Little does she know this is just the beginning of six long years of occupation that will threaten her beloved horses at every turn.

Major Bret Conway is at Janów Podlaski under the guise of a news reporter, but his true mission is intelligence gathering for the British. That and keeping Adia safe, which is harder and harder to do as she insists they must evacuate 250 horses to save them from being stolen, sold, or eaten by the invading forces. What follows will test their physical, mental, and emotional strength, as well as their faith in God, humankind, and each other.

Drawn from true events of World War II, this epic story of escape, capture, resistance, and love from debut novelist Nicole M. Miller will thunder into your heart like a herd of beautiful horses across a raging river.

Flat Deception ~ Review

Flat Deception
Roxbury Heirs #2
By Paige Edwards

All Lady Sophie Henderson has ever wanted is to raise and race her horses. She longs to make a name for herself as a woman in a predominantly male-dominated field. She is not out to make a stir; rather, she just wants to use her knowledge and skills working with the animals she loves. But when her father receives unexpected news about financial difficulties, Sophie's funds are cut.

Zander Matthews has long been in love with Sophie, and he knows when he delivers the bad news about the Roxbury Estates finances that Sophie's dream will be the first to be cut when it comes to trimming costs. What he never expected was Sophie's anger and avoidance of him. He wants to help her achieve her dream but Sophie's much like Mr. Darcy when it comes to people losing her good opinion. And she's determined to handle it all on her own, even if she has to sell treasured items to do so.

As shadows of doubt loom over Sophie and her horses, the situation escalates from bad to worse. Who is behind the attempts to shatter her hopes, dreams, and years of hard work? And who has decided that she needs to be eliminated? In this hour of need, who can she trust?

This is an exciting and fast-moving story that draws the reader into the costly world of thoroughbred racing. When funds are short, what will a desperate person do to keep up appearances and stay in the world they know? There is a definite who-dun-it in this book, and the author does a superb job of keeping the identity a secret. There was just one instance when I wondered, "Is it?"

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Lady Sophie Henderson has worked tirelessly to establish a breeding stable for racehorses on her family’s Scottish estate. But when her father cuts her funding, she’s desperate to find a way to achieve her life’s ambition. Selling precious heirloom jewels enables Sophie to care for her thoroughbreds, though it’s a temporary solution—and one that does not go unnoticed.

Zander Matthews is painfully aware of the role he played in Sophie’s loss of sponsorship. Now, he’s determined to use his hard-earned wealth to help her achieve her dreams. When Zander shocks Sophie with the offer of a business investment, it seems her aspirations are finally within reach. But the new partners discover that finding success will not be simple. There is a dark side to the posh British racing community, and Sophie and Zander have captured the attention of an enemy whose greed knows no bounds. Even as their partnership develops into something more, their happy ending is just beyond reach. Because in a world where people are willing to do anything to win, it’s impossible to know who to trust.

Of Sea and Smoke ~ Review

Of Sea and Smoke
The Fireborn Epic #2
By Gillian Bronte Adams

This is a fantastic read it follows within hours of the conclusion of book one Of Fire and Ash. And trust me when I say you have to read the series in order! There are so many stories and characters that have come together in this book that if you haven't read the first one, you will be utterly lost, much like Ceridwen finds herself in this book.

This story is from the viewpoints of several characters, all of whom seem destined to play a vital role in the war that has crossed the sea and engulfed more than one nation in the violent quest for power. Ceridwen is The Fireborn and the obvious heir to the throne but for the shame and debt she owes for her brother's death. Then there is Rafi who has been running for so long he doesn't have a place he truly can call home. At least not since the murder of his brother. And then there are his secrets and the lies he lives to hide them. But the one character who seems most shrouded is Jakim. Jakim who is far from his home. Born free, enslaved, freed, and enslaved yet again. He desires nothing more than to return home, yet he feels he has been called to this foreign land at this time for a reason.

From where Of Fire and Ash concluded one felt one had an idea where the story would go to next. Well, it did but then everything went all topsy-turvey and everything got shuffled around. If this hadn't happened so early in the book one would be in despair as to how the book would conclude. Well, it did happen early on, and greater depths were found in our main characters as they struggled to get back what was lost.

This book doesn't lack for anything. All of the characters have depth even those who may only be in it for one or two scenes. The settings are as vast as those seen between hemispheres and continents. There can be richness or starkness and each fits perfectly into place - a tribute to the author's years of work and research that had to go into this book.

I highly recommend this book either as a book in hand or an audio edition (I have both on preorder).

I was provided a complimentary advanced digital copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
He rides a seablood,
a steed of salt and spray,
born to challenge the tides.

Six years ago, the wrong brother survived, and nothing will ever convince Rafi Tetrani otherwise. But he is done running from his past, and from the truth. As civil war threatens Ceridwen’s tenuous rule in Soldonia, Rafi vows to fight the usurper sitting on the imperial throne of Nadaar, even if it means shouldering his brother’s responsibilities as the empire’s lost heir.

The stolen shipload of magical warhorses offers just the edge he needs. But the steeds have been demanded in ransom by the emperor’s ruthless assassin, and if Rafi hopes to raise a band of riders, he must first outwit his brother’s murderer.

Yet when his best efforts end in disaster, and an audacious raid sparks an empire-wide manhunt, even forging an unexpected alliance might not be enough to help Rafi turn the tides, let alone outrace the wave of destruction intent on sweeping them all away.

Seas boil and jungles burn in this tempestuous second installment of The Fireborn Epic as the outcast queen, captive missionary, and royal rebel strive to unearth the mysterious power that hungers for their world.

Chris Crossed Murder ~ Audiobook Review

CHRIS CROSSED MURDER (A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery) by Lauren Carr

CHRIS CROSSED MURDER by Lauren Carr

Chris Crossed Murder
A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery #4
By Lauren Carr
Narrated by Mike Alger

Chris Matheson is dead! Or is he?
When a body is found with Chris's id, his family and friends fear the worst. Soon it is discovered that Chris isn't dead but he did have an unfortunate experience that rendered him unavailable.
When the misidentified body is connected with an old cold case that Chris was briefly called in on, a whole kettle of doggy kibble is over turned (with all the dogs its kibble not fish in this kettle).  Who died and how? And what's the link to Chris?
Soon the Geezer Squad, Helen, Riley, and Chris are looking for answers into the decades old murder of a college student. And Chris is trying to determine if he was the intended target because of his past undercover work? The upcoming Christmas holiday is about to prove very interesting.

Chris Crossed Murder is a complex and puzzling case as everyone attempts to find answers. But the danger comes close to home. And when tragedy strikes, Chris's newly blended family may not get a Christmas morning together.
There are so many twists one has to wonder just who did what to whom. Overall this was a wonderful addition to the Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery series. In my opinion, I believe it may be the best one to date. And I will always enjoy the antics of Sterling, Choppers, and Thor.
Mike Alger's narration is again well presented, with each character having a distinct voice. The pacing is good, perfect for your weekday commute. I recommend this to readers, or listeners, who enjoy mysteries, cold cases, and animals (especially dogs) with personality.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my.

P.S. Be sure to check your voice mail, And avoid Peanuts!

"Carr is a master at creating unique, complex plots and colorful characters, both evident in her latest cold case mystery featuring  Chris Matheson and the geezer squad. Wilson, Author, Speaker, Book Reviewer

"Lauren Carr is among my favorite mystery writers. She knows how to write a fun tale while keeping readers engaged. ...I would give Chris Crossed Murder one hundred stars if I could. "Filled with twists and turns, Winter Frost reads perfectly well as a stand-alone, although it is part of a series. The author creates tension and suspense throughout by keeping the reader guessing; she keeps readers engaged with well fleshed out characters and a dash of humor. Sterling, the retired German Shepherd police dog turned card shark, is a new favorite. As the story flows, the truth unfolds, layer by layer, leading to a satisfying conclusion.

"Too many twists and turns to easily share about this book. Nevertheless, Carr has pulled off another "hit" that kept me reading in one setting until the clues were so well together that the villain fell into our laps...or Chris's, LOL Carr has put a lot into the book beyond the mysteries this time...Characters enjoyed chocotinis, visited book stores...and even blundered into getting engaged (the ring had been purchased 4 months ago)... But, for me, a special thank you for the political spoof at a time when politics at the national level is devastating, gave me a laugh and lightened the load of it all!" - Review by Glenda Bixler, Book Reader's Heaven

About the Book:
“I’m working on the greatest mystery ever,” was the last thing noted mystery novelist Mercedes Livingston said to seven-year-old Chris Matheson before walking out of Hill House Hotel never to be seen again.

For decades, the writer’s fate remained a puzzling mystery until an autographed novel and a letter put a grown-up Chris Matheson on the trail of a cunning killer. With the help of a team of fellow retired law enforcement officers, each a specialist in their own field of investigation, Chris puts a flame to this cold case to uncover what had really happened that night Mercedes Livingston walked out of Hill House Hotel. Watch out! The clues are getting hot!

The Secrets of Emberwild ~ Review

The Secrets of Emberwild
By Stephenia H. McGee

Nora Fenton wants to decide her own future; she wants to train and race her colt, Arrow. But society frowns upon such action, and the men who work at Emberwild are less than helpful when she tries to break out of the mold her family is forcing her into.

When her father dies, Nora is the only one to hear his confession, a confession that is left half unsaid. But the only thing Nora knows is that a lie has embittered her father's last years. And if the lie is what she suspects, everything around her will come tumbling down around her.

Seeking answers, Silas Cavallero returns to the place his father died, was it indeed an accident? Or was it something more sinister? Feeling that the answers he needs may be found at Emberwild, Silas offers his skills as a trainer. Skills that Nora may need if her dreams for Arrow are to come true.

But the secrets that Emberwild hides are deeply seeded and nearly impossible to uncover. And worse, discovering just what those secrets are could cost Silas and Nora their lives.

The Secrets of Emberwild is the perfect book. I've always loved books that featured horses, and this one does that while adding both mystery and romance to a historical backdrop. This was my first-time reading Stephania McGee's work, and I wasn't disappointed. The characters were well-written and the pacing was excellent. I can honestly say this is one I didn't want to put down it was that good.

If you judge a book by its cover, you won't regret picking this one up and getting lost amongst the pages. And it would make an excellent book club selection.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

A gifted trainer in a time women are not allowed to race, Nora Fenton prefers horses to men. They’re easier to handle, they’re more reliable, and they never tell her what to do. After her father’s passing, Nora is determined to save her struggling horse farm, starting with entering her prize colt into the harness races at the 1905 Mississippi Fair. If she wins, she may have a chance at independence. But when a stranger arrives and starts asking disconcerting questions, she suspects he may have other motives than unseating her in the training job that is rightfully hers.

Silas Cavallero will do whatever it takes to solve the mystery of his father’s death–even if it means training an unwieldy colt for Nora, who wants nothing more than to see him gone. But when mysterious accidents threaten their safety and circumstances shrouded in secrets begin unlocking clues to his past, Silas will have to decide if the truth is worth risking ruining everything for the feisty woman he’s come to admire.
