Shadowcast ~ Review

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Shadowcast by Crystal D. Grant, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Shadowcast

Shadowcast
The Gateway Trilogy
By Crystal D. Grant

First off, I have to admit this cover just drew me to this book. I know one isn't supposed to judge a book by its cover, but one can certainly let it convince you to at least give the book a second or third look. And anything that reminds me of space or a geode is an automatic attention grabber. So I said, "Yes, to the book."

Mason Gray has allowed the senseless murder of his brother to darken his heart to the point he desires nothing more than to get the Shadowstone so that he might more thoroughly put down those who stole his brother's life. Any and all who align themselves with the Stewart Knights are his enemy.

When Mason is injured, he manages to deceive Serial Gayle into helping him. Thinking she is helping aid an injured Stewart, she is more than shocked and hurt to learn the truth. Worse, when the truth of her aid comes out, her very life and her freedom are in jeopardy. Until Prince Eric shows compassion on one who was guilty only of compassion and caring.

The world is on the edge, and those who have fallen to the power of the Darkness's seductive allure - promises of vengeance, fear, and worse. While those who fight for the Light feel the power weakening as despair, fear, anger, and like feelings threaten to overtake them.

Who will triumph? The battle for the hearts, minds, and souls has begun. And a single choice could change everything.

Excellent reading. Perfect for fans of LOTR and Narnia. I highly recommend this for those 14 and up; younger readers who read at a higher level will also enjoy this.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

The Art of Love and Lies ~ Review

The Art of Love and Lies
A Proper Romance
By Rebecca Anderson

Rosanna Hawkins and her sisters have been afforded a most unusual upbringing - their parents have allowed them to pursue their passions. Rosanna's has made her a most accomplished artist, though not under her own name. Rather she recreates the masterpieces so those in England can enjoy "parlor versions" in their own homes. At least that's what her employer has told her.

With the art exhibition being held in Manchester, Rosanna has daily access to some of the world's greatest pieces including Michaelangelo’s The Manchester Madonna. And she also enjoys a harmless bit of flirting with Inspector Martin Harrison, who is head of the exhibition's security.

When it becomes clear that someone is switching Rosanna's "parlor versions" for the real pieces she finds herself at the top of the suspect list. Now the true dangers of allowing young ladies to be independent have come to light. Her all too trusting nature have made her easy prey as she wasn't under her parents' watchful eye. But Rosanna isn't about to allow herself to be a victim and is more than willing to help Martin capture the true criminal and restore the priceless treasures to their rightful owners. But can he ever trust her, much less love her?

This was a delightful read and one in which the author thoroughly engaged my attention. The characters had depth and the settings were described so that I felt I was moving amongst it and the fellow exhibit visitors. I would love to revisit these characters in a future book. If love sweet romance, a touch of intrigue, and fun banter look no further for your next read - you've found it in The Art of Love and Lies.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
A free-spirited artist teams up with a no-nonsense detective to capture a thief
who has stolen a priceless Michaelangelo painting.

Manchester, England, 1857

Rosanna Hawkins is one of Manchester’s finest artists, even though no one knows her name. She reproduces “parlor versions” of classic masterpieces with near-perfect precision, which her employer then sells to the emerging upper-middle class families.

When the largest art exhibition ever to be held in England opens in Manchester, Rosanna is excited to visit. She meets the handsome Inspector Martin Harrison, who is head of security, and is immediately intrigued by his charm, confidence, and portrait-worthy good looks. The two spend many a flirtatious afternoon exploring the exhibition hall, discussing art, and sharing their secret hopes. Rosanna dreams of painting something original and meaningful, and Martin hopes to one day shed the shadow of his father’s notorious past.

But when they discover the theft of some of the paintings—and all the evidence points to Rosanna—she must convince Inspector Harrison she is innocent and proposes a plan to capture the real art thief.

It is a daring race to catch the criminal before he disappears with the most priceless piece in the collection—Michaelangelo’s The Manchester Madonna. If Rosanna and Inspector Harrison fail, not only will the painting be lost forever but so will their chance to paint their own happily ever after.

The Railroad Magnate ~ Review

The Railroad Magnate

The Railroad Magnate
Colter Sons #3
By Karen Baney

Early on James Colter knew he wanted to be involved with the railroad and trains. Ranching wasn't for him. His path became successful, but it was a lonely one. As his work with the industry grew, his younger brothers began having families of their own, something he himself wanted. But no woman ever caught his eye, though they tried. No woman until the day the saw Keri Glassman.

Keri was only sixteen years old when she caught the eye of James Colter, and he asked her to dance. The ten-year difference in their age seemed too much. But she never was too far from his thoughts.

Following in her parents' footsteps, Keri became an attorney with a focus on being a contract attorney. When her skills save James's railroad company hundreds of thousands of dollars, she finds herself working with James.

But nothing is ever easy and when an economic crisis threatens the railroad industry, everyone's future is in flux. Can they weather the storm that could destroy everything James has spent the last ten years sacrificing for?

When an opportunity to visit the Chicago World's Fair comes, James and Keri are about to face a choice that could change their lives. But pleasing her parents or following her heart could be a decision that Keri is not willing to make. Who is she willing to disappoint?

This is the third book in the Colter Sons series, and it follows the family as they deal with a changing world. Some changes are easier than others, but others could break the bonds of family when differences arise. I would recommend reading the series in order, but this book could be enjoyed on its own. This is an enjoyable clean historical read. The characters are relatable, and one can empathize with the various viewpoints and concerns of each.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Prescott, Arizona Territory, 1891 – 1893

James Colter was a successful entrepreneur and businessman in the railroad industry. As he watches his younger brothers marry and start their families, his loneliness deepens. He has everything, except the one thing he longs for the most:  a wife and family of his own. When he dances with the daughter of an older friend, was it love at first sight, or will he put his personal dream on hold again to pursue his professional aspirations?

Keri Glassman wants to follow in her parents’ footsteps. She dreams of becoming a contract attorney. When a handsome suitor invites her on a train ride, the course of her life is rewritten. Like her mother, she wants it all, a career, a loving husband, and a family. Can she find her own way or will her desire to please her parents threaten to destroy her hope for a lasting love?

Love on Camera ~ Review

Love on Camera
The Wonder Boys #1
By Dana LeCheminant
Narrated By Mari Bee and Jon Brattin

Who doesn't love being read to? Yes, I know that some people prefer to read a book themselves, but if you are one of those who have fond memories of being read to, this audio edition of Love On Camera is a fun way to experience this book. The narration by Mari Bee and Jon Brattin is well-done and keeps the story moving so that one's attention is held throughout the reading.

I have read Dana LeCheminant's historical fiction offerings in the past and have greatly enjoyed them. So her contemporary offerings were new to me. I have to say this was a fun and enjoyable read (or listen). The characters were engaging, and the story was unique.

Ten dates over a couple months, ugh. But for the chance to get more exposure for her photography business, Madi agrees to this bet. But to get out of actually dating anyone, she enlists her older brother's best friends to play the role. They all just have to pretend to have just met, no problem. Right??

But working in ten fake dates around everyone's schedules is more than a little challenging. Fortunately, Oliver is usually available. Having sold his business, he has time to fill. And what better way to fill it than spending time with Madi, his best friend for years.

This is a cute read and one that is a great break from the daily stress of work. At just under 7-3/4 hours, it is an easy listen. I highly recommend it, and I can't wait until the rest of the series makes the transition to audio. But while I wait, I'm moving the eBook versions into my digital library TBR!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this digital audiobook with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Madi doesn’t have time to date. Oliver has all the time in the world.

When wedding photographer Madi is challenged to find herself ten dates in three months, she turns to her older brother’s three best friends to be her stand-ins. It helps her win the challenge without having to deal with the stress of dating. What could go wrong?

Since selling his company, Oliver hasn’t had much to do, and helping Madi has given his life meaning again. But when she asks him to pose as her boyfriend—more than just a date here and there—he suddenly finds himself questioning his feelings toward the girl he always saw as a little sister. Feelings that would get him murdered by his best friend.

No one sees the real Oliver the way Madi does, and Madi has never been as comfortable around anyone as she is with Oliver. With the fake part of their relationship feeling less and less fake, they both have to decide if they’re brave enough to take that first step toward something real. Is a chance at love worth risking a lifetime of friendship?

Her Only Wish ~ Review

Her Only Wish
A Season in Pinecraft #2
By Shelley Shepard Gray

Her Only Wish follows Betsy Detweiler, whom we were introduced to in Her Heart's Desire. Betsy has decided to return to Pinecraft, Florida, in an attempt to get out from under the excessive hovering of her family. As a young girl Betsy's asthma more than once led to her being hospitalized, and her parents have never gotten over the fear of nearly losing her. But Betsy needs to break out on her own, to convince her parents that she can handle life. She has a life list and has given herself a month to fulfill as much of it as possible.

First up on Betsy's list taking golf lessons so that she can play a round of golf. Her first foray into the world of golf finds her in the middle of the green at Snow Bird Golf Course, which isn't the safest place to be. Fortunately for her, she is spotted by August Troyer, who just so happens to be who she needs to talk to when it comes to playing golf and taking lessons. Meeting August just might be the best thing to happen to her as they both connect and quickly form a friendship that could become something more with time.

Soon Betsy meets Annie, who, with her sister Danielle has the means to help Betsy mark another item off her life list. Learning to swim is up next. But we are also given a chance to get to know Annie, who is rediscovering her sister. Where Annie and Danielle are concerned, it is interesting how Annie's observations about Danielle differed from what was taking place in her life.

This is an excellent read. There are emotional highs and lows as the various characters work through the issues they are each facing. I enjoyed getting to know each character, and revisiting some of the characters from the first book in the series was fun. This is a book that gently pulls one into it. There isn't a sudden drop into the life-shattering action, but rather a pleasant stroll onto the beach. If you want a pleasant read that will help you unwind, I would recommend this. Depending on the character, you will either love them or wish they would log out of Skype. (You'll need to read the book to get it, but yeah, just get off Skype.)

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Return to Pinecraft, Florida, for a Sweet Amish Romance

Sheltered yet adventurous, Betsy Detweiler is on a mission to get out of Kentucky and experience new things in life. She's got a list--a life list. What better place to start than with her friends in beautiful Pinecraft, Florida?

From the moment Betsy walks into the Snow Bird Golf Course to sign up for lessons, August Troyer is mesmerized. Betsy is a mass of contradictions--beautiful yet awkward, outgoing yet unsure, joyful yet hesitant. She's like no one he's ever met before, and as the only child of missionary parents, he's met a lot of people.

As Betsy and August embark on a month of enjoying life to the fullest, they'll encounter several reasons to back off and play it safe. But playing it safe has its own consequences. This tender romance reminds us that life--and love--requires a fair amount of risk.

The Clockwork City ~ Review

The Clockwork City
Lady Georgia Brunel Mysteries#1
By Shelley Adina

Lady Georgia Brunel has been in mourning for a year, following the death of her husband. With Society's expectations met, she is venturing out, taking a painting holiday in Venice. Along with her late husband's aunt, Millicent Brunel, she expects to enjoy the sights and paint. All too soon, her plans are upended when Lord Somersby is found dead on the water steps of the villa at which Georgia and Millie are staying.

With Georgia ordered to stay in Venice while the police investigate her possible ties to the murder, the two do a little sleuthing of their own. With Lord Somersby's young daughter in their care, they are quickly caught up in something more than they were expecting. With political forces they don't understand, danger is closer than they know.

I always love a well-written Steampunk mystery that is clean, and The Clockwork City definitely fits all these criteria. The story is engaging, and the cast of characters play well together even if they aren't playing nice. The mystery is a subtle thread that weaves its way throughout the story so that my attention, once captured, was held throughout my reading. I can easily say I'm looking forward to what happens next.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I give my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

April 1895. A painting holiday in Venice. A villa on the canal. A body in the water?

Lady Georgia Brunel, widowed a year, has been looking forward to her holiday in the Duchy of Venice with her companion, Millicent Brunel. The clockwork city’s annual art exhibition is in full swing, and old friends and new acquaintances make for an exciting social whirl. The married Lord Somersby would pursue her if he dared. Several members of the nobility, including those with connections to Lord and Lady Dunsmuir, make entertaining companions. And Georgia will never admit that Dustin Seacombe, the disheveled and irritating Texican Ranger who steps on one’s gown and will not confide his business in Venice, is the most interesting of all.

And then early one morning, the body of Lord Somersby washes up on the water stairs at the Brunel villa. An empty gondola floats nearby. Many assume it is an accident. The Duchy police assume a lover’s quarrel, with Georgia as their suspect. For there are powerful factions in the city who want this case solved and submerged as soon as possible. Georgia and Millie must act quickly to clear her name and discover the real murderer before Georgia finds herself dancing with death instead.

First in a new series of adventurous mysteries set in the Magnificent Devices steampunk world!

What Dreams May Come ~ Review

 What Dreams May Come
 By Dana LeCheminant

Lucy Hayes has been persuaded to leave her place of employment in secret in an attempt to evade the unwanted attentions of a man she does not wish to marry. But a storm soon finds her agreeing to a most unusual plan-she pretends to be married to an utter stranger. Great idea until the stranger offering her protection falls ill, and his family is informed of her status.

To protect herself, Lucy is reluctantly drawn further into the lie that she has a connection to William Calloway. As his betrothed, she is offered a place within the family. And as much as she hates lying about who she is, Lucy relishes the feeling of family, safety, and love they freely offer her. How can she even begin to explain the truth of her situation without William's aid?

And then there is Simon, William's older brother, whom Lucy connects with. As she gets to know Simon more, Lucy discovers a hurting soul, a soul that she alone seems to understand. But the lies she has told stand between them.

What Dreams May Come is a lovely read from the talented mind of Dana LeCheminant. A woman with no connections in need of refuge hides behind a lie. A lie she never wanted, but it is all that stands between her and an unwanted marriage (or worse). But the very lie meant to protect her could be the very thing that will destroy her future. I must admit this would be a most trying situation to find oneself in. I can't honestly say what I would have done in a similar situation.

I really loved these characters - Lucy, who was trying to protect herself the only way she knew how. Simon, who was losing himself to the legacy he was trying to preserve. These are characters I would love to revisit in additional books. I have become invested in their lives and want to know what happens next, and would love the chance to get to know the supporting characters better. This lovely Regency read will delight readers of Historical Romance who want a clean read.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

In a bid to escape the incessant attentions of a man she does not love, governess Lucy Hayes embarks on a journey to begin a new post. But when she’s stranded in a storm, her plans go shockingly awry. Desperate times call for desperate measures: against her better judgment, she agrees to a foolhardy scheme presented by a handsome stranger, known to her as only William. But when her mysterious benefactor falls ill, she finds herself unwittingly drawn into his family home in a case of mistaken identity: they believe she is William’s betrothed. Though she realizes she should admit the truth, the family’s warmth and welcome make it all too easy to play along, just for a while. Until she meets Baron Lord Simon Calloway, William’s older brother.

Simon is suspicious of his lovely future sister-in-law, a woman who seems completely unsuited to his self-important brother. As they wait for William to awake, Simon and Lucy are drawn ever closer together. But danger draws closer too, in the form of her unwanted suitor. Lucy knows that when Simon discovers the truth, he will despise her. Now she must find a way to keep herself safe . . . and avoid falling hopelessly in love with a man she can never have.

Wyoming Wild ~ Review

Wyoming Wild
By Sarah M. Eden

Liesl Hodges had tried her best to protect the citizens of Sand Creek from her father's murderous violence. But she can only do so much before his anger is turned toward her. But when she overhears him plotting to kill a respected US Marshal, she has no choice but to send out a warning.

When John Hawking receives an anonymous warning that his life is in danger, he has no choice but to investigate. Sand Creek seems peaceful enough, but once you look beneath the surface, everything isn't as it first appears. But finding the source of his warning may take more effort than Hawk first anticipated, but he hopes that Sheriff Hodges's daughter may help him find the answers he seeks.

When Hawk learns the truth about his warning, he discovers that stopping the injustice and evil that have made a home in Sand Creek just might be his hardest case ever because his stone-cold heart is involved.

Wyoming Wild is a delightful visit to 1876's Wyoming Territory. This book is a Western Proper Romance, and it is an excellent addition to the Proper Romance series. Liesl and Hawk are well-suited in their attempt to stop injustice and protect those under their care. Both have trouble with not acting, but this is one time when time and planning can't be rushed, not if they hope to stop the man who is plotting to end their lives.

As this is a Proper Romance, you are assured of a sweet romance that is most definitely in the Clean Romance zone. There is a bit of a mystery as to who is involved in what is happening in Sand Creek, but the main focus is on Hawk and Liesl and their connection. But can a young woman with every reason to distrust lawmen and a lawman who has hardened his heart have a chance at a happily ever after? If you are a fan of Sarah M. Eden's work you'll enjoy this newest offering. Or if you've never read her before, this is an excellent one to start with.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I give my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Hearts collide when a sheriff’s daughter asks a hardened US Marshal
to join her fight for justice and rid a small town of her corrupt father.

Wyoming Territory, 1876

US Marshal John “Hawk” Hawking is one of the most respected lawmen in the West, so when a telegram arrives from the small town of Sand Creek warning him of a death threat against him, he immediately begins an investigation.

Posing as a farmer, Hawk heads to Sand Creek, a town ruled by a violent and corrupt sheriff. Only one person is trying to stop him—Liesl, the sheriff’s own daughter. When she meets the self-assured and attractive new farmer, John, she hopes he might help her in the fight for justice.

John is completely unfazed by Sheriff Hodges’s attempts at intimidation, and Liesl is quickly swept up by Hawk’s courage and integrity. Just as quickly, Hawk finds himself falling for Liesl’s strength and bravery, as well as her grace and beauty.

When Liesl discovers John’s true identity, she feels betrayed. Despite her lingering distrust of him, Liesl agrees to work with him to enact a dangerous plan that will put the criminals away forever. Liesl must put her life, and her heart, in the hands of this lawman if she has any hope of saving her family and her town.

Graysen Foxx and the Treasure of Principal Redbeard ~ Review

Graysen Foxx and the Treasure of Principal Redbeard
Grayson Foxx #1
By J. Scott Savage

First off let me say that this book is written for Middle Grade readers but adults will enjoy references to their growing up years. This book is just too funny in places - at one point in his archeological endeavors Gray comes across an old form of writing that may be hieroglyphics, a series of squiggles and swirles that upon closer inspection was cursive writing.

This isn't a book of bathroom humor to entertain kids but honest to goodness funny situations all set in elementary school with a flair of the dramatic as Gray and his friends search out lost treasures that may be found on the school's grounds. And the greatest treasure is that of Principal Redbeard who confiscated toys and whatnot from students years, and years, ago and at an abrupt dismissal never returned the items to the students.

Everything isn't totally fun and games as Grey has to deal with bullies, but there are lessons to be had as his kindness, care, and concern of his fellow students help them overcome together.

I highly recommend this book as clean reading fun that also offers a few valuable insights into life at the same time. I have no qualms or concerns in doing so. Yes, some of this situations in regards to the treasure hunting are highly unlikely but they are just catalysts to the adventure portion of the story.

Join Graysen Foxx on a wild, treasure-hunting adventure!

Ordinary Elementary is anything but ordinary. Below the classrooms are winding, abandoned, underground passages filled with lost treasures. Fifth-grader Graysen Foxx, aka The Gray Fox—finder of secrets, solver of mysteries, and explorer of the unknown—is hot on the trail of the legendary treasure of Principal Redbeard, which includes decades of confiscated gadgets, rare comic books, first-edition Pokémon trading cards, an original Rubik’s Cube, and a retro handheld video game.

Graysen is determined to find the treasure and share it with his fellow students. His nemesis, Raven Ransom—nicknamed “Red Raven”—plans to stop him and claim the prizes for herself, just like she did with the game-winning home run kickball everyone thought was lost on the roof of the school.

Wearing his adventurer-iconic fedora, journaling in his field notebook, and wielding his elastic stretchy hand, Graysen is ready for action. But can he avoid the second-grade spy network working for Raven? Could the third-grade twins, Maya and Jack, give him an advantage? Can he avoid the ruthless sixth graders while trying to protect the innocent first graders? And who is the mysterious Midnight Moth who is leaving cryptic notes and riddles?

It's a battle between courage and cunning, smarts and shrewdness, charity and cheating. With the treasure on the line, can Graysen trust his rival—or is it just another one of her traps? May the best treasure hunter win!

Fraser ~ Review

FraserFraser
The Minnesota Marshalls #1
By Susan May Warren

Fraser Marshall's life is ruined. At least his career is on the line if he can't recover from his injury. Fraser needs to be saving the world, playing his part, but for now, he's stuck at the Marshall family home watching over the family's winery until he gets the call.

Creed, the youngest Marshall, is in trouble and needs help now. There is just one problem, Creed is in Europe, and he's on the run from a murderer. Well, make that two problems; he's on the run with Princess Imani, and (well, three problems) he's been accused of kidnapping said princess.

If you're from Minnesota, which Fraser and Creed are, now is the time to say UFF-DA; just saying. And Princess Imani's personal bodyguard is tracking them down. And Pippa Butler takes her job very seriously; she's the type to taser you first and then ask questions.

Fraser is the first book in The Minnesota Marshalls series, and like most of Susan May Warren's books, it is part of something bigger. There is an undercurrent of danger with ties to Russia and rogue CIA operatives, and they've now turned their eyes on the Minnesota branch of the extended Marshall family (read the Montana Marshalls series for more of this tangled mess), specifically Fraser and Creed, and can I just say uff-da again, because this is a big international mess that they have landed in the middle of. And, of course, having to try to play the part of hero has made both Marshall men see the women who've managed to get caught in this major-to-do as something extra special. (Much to Pippa and Fraser's consternation because, hey, they both have people to protect, lives to save, jobs to do, etc.)

Overall anyone who has read any of Susan May Warren's recent books (or series) is sure to come across a familiar character or two (or three). And as Fraser has been working with Jones, Inc. yes familiar faces are definitely about to be called in for some help when things go from bad to worse.

Almost from the get-go, there is drama and ever-mounting suspense as Fraser and Pippa work to find out what's going on and to find Creed and Imani before the killer finds them. Were they just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or is something bigger going on? Until they can answer these questions none of them will be safe. I love how many familiar faces from her previous series are in this book. If you haven't read any of Susan May Warren's books before, you can still enjoy this book with its references to other books. It's like making a new friend who makes references to incidences in their past. You can still enjoy them and slowly learn more about who they were before you met them.

This made for a great after-a-long-day-at-work-escape with the only problem being I wanted to keep reading all night long, because who wouldn't want to know if they escape, and Pippa and Fraser can locate Creed and Imani? Okay, so maybe this isn't the best read before bed, but it grabbed my attention, and I just had to know what was going to happen next. There is nothing graphic to give you nightmares, but there is suspense and romance that combine in an intriguing balance. Overall I have no problem recommending this to others who love reading contemporary Romantic Suspense (a touch more of both than the Love Inspired Suspense books but nothing over the top).

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations, but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Publisher: SDG Publishing
Release Date: February 14, 2023
Genre: Christian Romantic Suspense

Fraser Marshall is pretty sure his career as a Spec Ops fighter is over. Yes, he’s gone into private security, working for Jones, Inc, but his last gig ended with him wounded and taken captive. And those wounds just won’t heal. The last thing he wants to do is stick around his family’s winery pressing grapes. But what choices does he have?

The answer comes via a panicked phone call from his kid brother, Creed.

Help, Fraser. I’m in over my head…

Yeah he is, because he’s run away with a princess, with her bodyguard hot on the trail. And said bodyguard, Pippa Butler is going to hunt them down, no matter the cost.

Even if she has to join forces with a bossy, arrogant former American SEAL. But Pippa has her own set of lethal skills, and if Fraser gets in the way, she’ll leave him on the side of the road. Still, maybe he’s not a terrible side-kick. He is handsome, and he makes her laugh…

No, no, bad Pippa! She has no room for a man—an American—in her life. And Fraser hasn’t ever considered slowing down. Even if Pippa has him wondering if there is a different future ahead.

But there’s more to the story than a Romeo-and-Juliet runaway romance. Princess Imani has seen a murder, and the perpetrator isn’t going to let her get away. Will Fraser and Pippa find the couple first?

And if they do, can they work together to keep them safe?

It’ll be tough if their hearts get in the way…

A Winter at the White Queen ~ Review

A Winter at the White Queen
Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts #1
By Denise Weimer

What more can I say other than this was a delightful book to read? Well, obviously I can say more because I read and enjoyed this book. First Ellie Hastings is an orphan who is at the beck-and-call of her wealthier relations who took her in all those years ago. Her aunt almost sees Ellie as staff with how she treats her. And worse she can't live her own life until her youngest cousin is secure in a proper engagement and worse Ellie has to discover any potential suitor's worth and potential.

When the Hastings family winters over in Florida, Ellie is suppose to uncover Mr. Lewis Thornton's eligibility, and unless he is married he is fair game in Aunt Florence's opinion.

But there is something that Lewis Thornton is hiding and Ellie is determined to find out just what that is. And when Aunt Florence's diamond necklace goes missing Ellie has her own suspicions as to who is guilty of the crime.

This is a lovely book that falls in both clean and gentle reading. The setting is Florida's winter social season during the Gilded Age. If you are a fan of Love Finds You In historical fiction or the Doors to the Past series, you will LOVE this book. This is the first book in a new series that I'm interested in seeing what happens next. This was my first introduction to Denise Weimer and I was not disappointed in what I read. I highly recommend it to fans of Historical Fiction. And if nothing else, judge this book by its cover - you won't regret it!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but the I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

In the world of the wealthy,
things are never quite as they appear.

About the Book:
Ellie Hastings is tired of playing social gatekeeper—and poor-relation companion—to her Gibson Girl of a cousin. But her aunt insists Ellie lift her nose out of her detective novel long enough to help gauge the eligibility of bachelors during the winter social season at Florida’s Hotel Belleview. She finds plenty that’s mysterious about the suave, aloof Philadelphia inventor, Lewis Thornton. Why does he keep sneaking around the hotel? Does he have a secret sweetheart? And what is his connection to the evasive Mr. Gaspachi, slated to perform at Washington’s Birthday Ball?

Ellie’s comical sleuthing ought to put Lewis out, but the diffident way her family treats her smashes a hole in his normal reserve. But when Florence Hastings’ diamond necklace goes missing, Ellie’s keen mind threatens to uncover not only Lewis’s secrets, but give him back hope for love.

Meriden Park ~ Review

Meriden Park

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for
Meriden Park by Julie Daines,

Meriden Park
A Regency Romance
By Julie Daines

Mary Grace has spent most of her life living with the Wellings. But other than the Wellings, she has never been wanted by anyone. Newly arrived in England from India, Mary Grace feels the full impact of her mixed heritage in the looks and attitudes of the people who surround her.

But when Mary Grace has a chance meeting with Mr. Robert Markham, her life takes an unexpected change. Someone sees her and doesn't judge her for being half-Indian.

Robert Markham seeks justice for the poor people who call the area home. The poor workers of the lace mill are being murdered and losing their jobs to machines. With Robin Hood as an example, Robert spends his hours in Sherwood Forest seeking to bring the guilty down.

But as the danger grows, Robert and Mary Grace find themselves pulled deeper into the mystery that fills the green forest. And there is something between them that could be something more, but secrets stand between them - secrets that could destroy everything if they become known.

Meriden Park is a delightful mix of Regency with Robin Hood, Mystery, and Suspense. I love how the story unfolds, forcing the truth to be revealed. Robert and Mary Grace have similarities in how they see their worth. Both have been disappointed by people in their lives. Both try to hide what they feel are weaknesses/faults from others; Mary's are more visible than Robert's. There are some interesting twists as the story unfolds; some are more unexpected than others. This is a definite must-read, in my opinion. This book also comes in an audio format that is well presented, so whether you read your book or listen to it, there is no reason not to enjoy it.

I was provided a digital copy of this book with no exception, but that I provide my honest opinion, all thoughts expressed are my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Title: Meriden Park
Author: Julie Daines
Publisher: Covenant Communications
Release Date: December 5, 2022
Genre: Clean & Wholesome Romance/Historical/Regency/Suspense

Following her childhood rescue from the gutters of Calcutta, Mary Grace’s life has been an astonishing rags-to-riches tale. The Wellings raised the half-Indian orphan with all the love and care the childless couple possessed, allowing her to grow into a beautiful and refined woman. But upon Mr. Welling’s death, it is time for Mrs. Welling to take Mary home to England―home to Meriden Park.

Despite her genial nature, Mary is received with suspicion by the villagers. For his part, however, Mr. Robert Markham is intrigued by the curious new beauty in town. Determined to make her acquaintance, he offers Mary a bargain she can’t refuse: a hot cross bun for a kiss. That seemingly innocent exchange is the first of many encounters between Robert and Mary, whose friendship blossoms into love during long walks in the privacy of Sherwood Forest. But the shadows of the forest hide a sinister secret, one Mary fears Robert might be a part of. As the mystery of the recent string of murders creeps closer and closer, Robert and Mary are drawn into a dangerous game, and unless she can unearth the truth, the couple risks losing one another forever.
