The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh ~ Review

The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh
Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery #3
By Claudia Gray
Narrator by Billie Fulford-Brown

This is the third book in the Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney Mystery series, but this book can easily be read as a standalone series. This is set approximately 20 years following Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey.

In this mystery, Lady Catherine de Bourgh finds herself the target of murder attempts (imagine that the lady has enemies) and calls on her grand-nephew, Jonathan Darcy, son of Lizzie and Fitzwilliam Darcy. And to Jonathan's delight, Lady Catherine invites his partner in crime-solving Miss Juliet Tilney, daughter of Catherine (Morland) and Henry Tilney, to assist in the case.

This is the first case these two young sleuths have pursued while the victim still lives. They just have to keep Lady Catherine alive long enough to determine potential suspects and possible motives. No pressure there!

Add in Lady Catherine and her less-than-charming personality, and there is an overabundance of reasons to do in the Lady. Most unsatisfactory, indeed. While Juliet and Henry work the case, they try to determine where they stand with one another; a year has passed without communication between them. Are they sleuths-in-arms, friends, or something more? If their fathers have their way, the case is the only thing keeping them together, and it will be swiftly resolved. Not happening or we would be left with a most unsatisfying story.

This was an enjoyable story that will appeal to those who love historical mysteries and works that expand the world that Jane Austen shared. I must admit it was fun entering the next generations' lives. I loved how the various stories that Austen introduced us to were intertwined for this series.

I also decided to enjoy this book as an audiobook, which was well presented. The narrator did an excellent job portraying the various characters. The audiobook, as presented, is just under 11 hours, but I played it 1.2x, which matched my reading speed and reduced the playback time by a little more than an hour.

If you are looking for something new to read, try Claudia Gray's newest historical mystery, The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

I was provided a complimentary copy (of the print book) with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

The third book in the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery series, which finds the amateur sleuths facing their most daunting challenge yet: preventing the murder of the imperious Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Someone is trying to kill Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Esteemed aunt of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, generous patroness of Mr. William Collins, a woman of rank who rules over the estate of Rosings Park with an unimpeachable sense of propriety—who would dare? Lady Catherine summons her grand-nephew, Mr. Jonathan Darcy, and his investigative companion, Miss Juliet Tilney, to find out.

After a year apart, Jonathan and Juliet are thrilled to be reunited, even if the circumstances—finding whoever has thus far sabotaged Lady Catherine's carriage, shot at her, and nearly pushed her down the stairs—are less than ideal. Also less than ideal: their respective fathers, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Mr. Henry Tilney, have accompanied the young detectives to Rosings, and the two men do not interact with the same felicity enjoyed by their children.

With attempts against Lady Catherine escalating and no one among the list of prime suspects seemingly capable of committing all of the attacks, the pressure on Jonathan and Juliet mounts—even as more gentle feelings between the two of them begin to bloom. The race is now on to provoke two confessions: one from the attempted murderer before it is too late—and one, perhaps, of love.

Willing to Wed the Rancher ~ Review

Willing to Wed the Rancher
High Country Ranch #2
By Jody Hedlund

Deary, deary, the Oakley siblings certainly have a whole passel of trouble when it comes to matters of the heart. This time, Clarabell is caught up in a mess when neighbor Eric Meyer pops the question she's been dreading. Clarabell has no intention of being a bride of convenience, no matter how drawn she is to his children. Now, she just needs to convince him of that fact, but she just hates to say no to anyone. She's spent a lifetime letting her twin sister Clementine get her way just because of that.

But when Eric is murdered, Clarabell finds herself mother to two young children and looking over her shoulder in case the murderer is still around. Well, when Eric's younger brother Franz arrives, she's relieved that he wants to help out. She never expected to have feelings for him, nor that her sister too would be drawn to him. Can you see the trouble ahead? Oh, yeah, it happens, and then there is Franz and his feelings are thrown into the whole mix.

Let's just say someone is going to be feeling pretty bad when all is settled. It's just a question of who and how many. Because sister issues can prove to be not-so-pretty at times.

For fans of Jody Hedlund's Colorado Cowboys series, here's a little fun fact: Jericho Bliss is in this book. And he's in it in an official way. But anyone who's enjoyed her previous book should enjoy this second book in the High Country Ranch series, which is a mix of mystery and romance in a historical setting.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

In the high country of Colorado, falling in love at first sight is not only possible, it’s likely to happen.

Assistant schoolteacher Clarabelle Oakley has a hard time saying no. When Eric Meyer, widowed father of two of her young students, proposes to her, she botches her effort to tell him no and that she wants to marry for love, not convenience. Only days later, the unthinkable happens, and Clarabelle learns she’s been given charge of Eric’s children and his farm.

Professor Franz Meyer arrives in Summit County, Colorado, to make peace with his estranged brother but discovers Eric is gone, leaving too many unanswered questions. One thing he knows for certain, however, is that he’s fallen in love at first sight with Clarabelle and is determined to win her heart.

As Franz investigates what happened to his brother, danger closes in. He wants to keep Clarabelle and the children safe, but she resists the relationship because her twin sister has staked a claim on Franz. Will Clarabelle choose to say yes to love before Franz is taken from her forever?

  • Love at first sight

*All of the books in the High Country Ranch series are sweet, closed-door romances with plenty of sizzle. The inspirational themes are light, and the romance is the main focus of the books.

The Beauty and the Griffin By J. M. Stengl

Three romantic dreams. Two precocious griflets. One hasty curse that may doom not only Faraway Castle but the world.

Beatrice de Callen, an otherwise sensible young woman, was foolish enough to fall in love with the benevolent yet shadowy mage known as the Gamekeeper of Faraway Castle. Worse still, she broke his heart.

But when traitorous mages steal a powerful fay artifact, magical war threatens, and the Gamekeeper vanishes, Beatrice promises her fairy godmother to help and soon finds herself escorting two telepathic griffin eggs and Winifred, their furious nanny, through a labyrinth of caves in search of the Forbidden Palace. Exhausted, Beatrice falls asleep while snuggling the gold egg and dreams of dancing with an utterly stunning young king at his coronation ball.

Have they met before?

Once the eggs guide their humans to the timeless palace, Beatrice is relieved to sense the Gamekeeper’s presence—but Win insists he is the monster that killed the last King of Adelboden!

Beatrice must not only help raise the lively griflets and watch over a girl who hates her, but also save Faraway Castle and the world by breaking a century-old curse.

Only the Golden Griffin can tell her how.

I Dream a Dream For You ~ Review

I Dream a Dream for You
By Bob Hostetler
Illustrated by Benedetta Capriotti

When it comes to books for young children, the illustrations are as important, if not more so, than the story. And when the two come together to present a lovely and charming story, it is even better.

This is a bedtime story for children about a parent's dreams and prayers for their child. It hopes that the child will live a morally upright and godly life that helps those in need and enjoys the world around them.

I love the illustrations. They are colorful and perfectly accompany the story.  And I love all the cute animals; the facial expressions really allow little ones to grasp and understand the story better.

In my opinion, this story is appropriate for those aged 6 years and younger. Older children may enjoy it, but I think this is geared towards the youngest readers/listeners.

I was provided a complimentary digital copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
