The Indebted Earl
The Indebted Earl
Serendipity and Secrets #3
By Erica Vetsch

For three years Lady Sophia Haverly has waited for Rich's return. The war has ended but Rich was a casualty right at the conclusion, but not before he extracted a promise from his friend and commanding officer to visit Sophie with his last words.

Having pledged herself to Rich, Sophie finds herself at a loss as she is not his widow just the fiance he never returned home to. But when time marches on not giving her time to grieve what was not to be she must recreate her life. When Captain Charles Wyvern arrives with Rich's possessions and his final words he also offers his assistance to Sophie and to Mamie, Rich's mother.

An offer of assistance to assuage his guilt was the least he could offer to the woman he got to know through his friend's letters. But when his own circumstances drastically change he finds that needs Sophie's help to navigate a world of which he has no understanding.

Charles Wyvern is a navy man through and through, from the age of 12 he has known no other life and he is in no way prepared to take on the management of an estate, three young wards, and the loathed title of Earl of Rothwell. He admits it, he needs help, and the only help available the houseful of women he has just found to be in his charge. The only solution he can see is Sophie and she agrees to his offer of a marriage of convenience.

But soon the estate and instant family he has just inherited are the least of his worries when he is accused of smuggling. Can a man whose only goal was to live a life of duty to his country and king fall to the machinations of traitors? Not if his new wife has anything to say about it. But the daughter of a duke and wife to an accused earl just might not have the voice those in power will listen to.

This is an excellent addition to the Serendipity and Secrets series. That being said one can read this book without having read the previous two books in the series and easily follow the story with no difficulties. It is interesting seeing Sophia and Charles work through their grief, guilt, and anger to get to the conclusion which was most satisfactory. This book will keep you turning the pages into the early hours of the morning (or until 7:00 am, in my case) but it is so worth it. I highly recommend this to those who are looking for clean reading Regency Romance.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Genre: Christian Regency Romance

Can Captain Wyvern keep his new marriage of convenience all business--or will it turn into something more?

Captain Charles Wyvern owes a great debt to the man who saved his life--especially since Major Richardson lost his own life in the process. The best way to honor that hero's dying wish is for Wyvern to escort the man's grieving fiance and mother safely to a new cottage home by the sea. But along the way, he learns of another obligation that has fallen on his shoulders: his uncle has died and the captain is now the Earl of Rothwell.

When he and the ladies arrive at his new manor house in Devon, they discover an estate in need of a leader and a gaggle of girls, all wards of the former earl. War the new earl knows; young ladies and properties he does not. Still wishing to provide for the bereaved Lady Sophia Haverly, Charles proposes a marriage of convenience.

Sophie is surprised to find she isn't opposed to the idea. It will help her care for her betrothed's elderly mother, and she's already fallen in love with the wayward girls on the Rothwell estate. This alliance is a chance to repay the captain who has done so much for her care, as well as divert her attention from her grief. When Wyvern returns to his sea commission, she'll stay behind to oversee his property and wards.

It sounds so simple. Until the stalwart captain is arrested on suspicion of smuggling, and Sophie realizes how much he's come to mean to her. Now she'll have to learn to fight, not only for his freedom but also for his love.

Hope Between the Pages

 Hope Between the Pages
 Doors to the Past
 By Pepper Basham

First off let me just say I LOVED this book. The story is  split between 1915/1916 and the present day and it revolves around books. The main characters have a love of books and it is what draws them together.

Clara Blackwell is trying to save her family's bookstore from her uncle. A bookstore that has belonged to her family for more than 100 years but the needed documentation proving ownership is missing and Clara has little time to find what she needs. What she does find offers little insight into her great-great-grandmother Sadie's past - a past that hints at something more.
Sadie Blackwell is a book maid for the Vanderbilts and as such, she is to be invisible to the guests of the family. But Oliver Camden she in her a kindred spirit and a lover of books. A love of the written word draws them together in a way that is impossible given their respective social standings.
Hope Between the Pages alternates between the two storylines unfolding the mystery of Sadie, Oliver, and the Blackwell Bookstore. And as the past is revealed we get to know Clara and her love of vintage clothing, books, and the bookstore. And when Clara's search takes her to England, well, you just have to read the book. This is my new favorite book-centric book it has everything you could want from a book to leave you with a feel-good want-to-reread this book now book -- mystery, romance, an evil villain or two, and a hero. And hope is found between the pages
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Drive ~ Review

Drive: 9 Lessons to Win in Business and in Life
By Kelley Earnhardt Miller
With Beth Clark
Forward by Dale Earnhardt JR.
First, off I'll admit it I'm not a NASCAR fan. I've seen it in passing but my dad was a fan - not diehard but if a race was on and he was off for the day he'd watch it. But whether or not you are into NASCAR this book has a lot to offer. Glimpses of what life behind the scenes is like for those who are in it and the personal perspective of the family behind the racer.
Kelley Earnhardt Miller offers a glimpse into her life as the daughter of Dale Earnhardt and as a NASCAR driver and as a businesswoman. She offers valuable insights on how to succeed in life and in business while drawing on her own experiences and overcoming obstacles along the way.
I really think the following quote is an excellent summation of what this book is all about. "Our early days don't have to dictate the rest of our lives, but they do influence and determine much about the way we think and feel, the way we relate to others, the way we approach and solve problems, our work ethic, our likes and dislikes, and our priorities." Your past has shaped your present but you can determine how your future will play out. It is up to you to define who you are with what you have been given.
I received a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

In Drive, Kelley Earnhardt Miller, daughter of Dale Earnhardt Sr. and sister to Dale Jr., opens up about growing up in the world of NASCAR, sharing the lessons she learned about being a successful business leader and what she discovered, often the hard way, about winning in life.

Her journey of transformation is what empowered her to run the family business in an entirely different way than she had previously and to lead people not only with her head but also with her heart.

A Time to Seek ~ Review

A Time to Seek
The Time Travel Journals of Sahara Aldridge #1
By Tracy Higley

Sahara Aldridge is working to make a name for herself in Egyptology. A field, that in 1922, is dominated by men. Her love began as a young girl as she traveled with her parents as they made their own inroads into this field. But when she was 15 years old she lost them. Fortunately, the family that took her in allowed her to continue her studies of Egypt and archeology.

Sahara has one last chance to secure her place in Egyptology before the funds that have supported the digs she has participated in are gone. But this year she has two goals while in Egypt - help make the find of a lifetime and determine the truth behind her parents' deaths.

When her dear friend Evelyn finds something that casts doubt on all she knew about her parents, Sahara begins to question events from her own past. Could she and her parents have been more than she always knew? With a journal entry as her only clue, Sahara is about to dig into not only Egypt's past but her own as well. Her future may depend on what she discovers.

And then there is Jack Moretti, an American photographic journalist who may have ties to the answers she's seeking. Is Jack a friend or a foe? Sahara has secrets to guard both as an Egyptologist on a dig and as a person who may have a gift of time travel and Jack may be a threat to everything.

A Time to Seek takes the reader on a journey through time not by revealing discoveries of ancient cities and sites of importance but by seeing it through the eyes of a young woman who is about to discover just who she truly is. Sahara has the ability to slip into the past. But entering a world, a place, a time without the proper knowledge could be the death of her.

A Time to Seek is the first book in The Time Travel Journals of Sahara Aldridge and it is an excellent read. I don't want to reveal too much and spoil it for any reader but really this is a not-to-be-missed book. And it will leave you in anticipation of book 2. I highly recommend this book if you have a love of the unexpected, time travel, mysteries, and speculative fiction. Or if you just love a well-written book you can't go wrong with this offering from Tracy Higley.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Her Future Destiny is Hidden in the Ancient Past.

Sahara Aldridge, a young Egyptologist in 1922, is making a name for herself on the digsite soon to become Egypt’s most sensational discovery—the tomb of the boy-king, Tutankhamun.

Despite opposition from a mostly male profession, Sahara fights to continue the legacy of her Egyptologist parents, who died tragically at sea when she was a teen.

But then a childhood friend finds a lost journal written by Sahara’s mother, hinting at the bizarre possibility of time-travel, and a crazy suspicion forces Sahara to confront a freak incident years earlier…

Is it possible her parents were time travelers?

And has she inherited this mind-blowing ability?

When the American journalist Jack Moretti begins asking too many questions, Sahara suspects he knows more than he’s telling.

Did her parents truly perish in an accident? Or did someone target and murder them because of their time traveling gift?

There’s only one way to unearth the truth.

Sahara must travel back in time, to the days of King Tut.

But the biggest surprise is yet to come… the truth about her parents, and about her own destiny, discovered in the whispers of conspiracy around the death of Egypt’s most famous Pharaoh.

But what secrets are better left buried?

The Billionaire's Sons ~ Review with Author Q&A

The Billionaire's Sons
Sayid Royal Family Drama #5
By Julie L. Spenser

This book is broken into four parts telling the story of the Cohen family. A family of privilege who are trying to find and make a place for themselves in the world. The book opens with the Cohen family having 5 sons who each behave differently to the privileges of being the sons of a billionaire. The eldest two feel it is their duty to party and carouse as hard and as often as they are able to walk - even if the walk is a drunken stagger. The youngest brother, Jacob is still a teen and watching his brothers so not yet a worry to his parents. Nick is the fourth brother and is determined to follow his father's teaching. He avoids drinking, bedding women, and other such offensive behavior and he has become his father's right-hand man where the family business is concerned. Middle son Sam is caught between everything though he tends to lean more towards Nick's behavior than that of Lyle and Liam.

As the story progresses we discover that actions have consequences. Greed is a divisive tool and the Cohen family is about to be torn apart by it. Can wounds be healed? Or will this family forever be torn apart? This book covers more than twenty years and though it sounds daunting it isn't as long a read as it sounds or at first glance appears.

Overall the story was fairly good. My only issue was that this book was promoted as a Clean Romance and the reason I agreed to review it. I'm not comfortable saying that this is a clean read - there wasn't any on-page sex but it was more than once implied as occurring between various characters. If this was a movie it would fall into the PG-13 category so I'd probably skip it if it didn't have a ClearPlay filter. (I admit it I'm a prude - my mom has said as much on more than one occasion to me.) But if you are a reader who doesn't have squirm issues with these types of scenes you will most likely LOVE this book. The author's writing is presented well and well-paced so I have no issue with this book other than my own personal reading preferences.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Four love stories, Six brothers, and the Inheritance that tears them apart.

The esteemed businessman, Nicholas Cohen, attempts to win the heart of his childhood sweetheart, Adele, despite his older brother ruining their wedding.

Meanwhile, his younger brother, Sam, impatiently waits for the girl of his dreams, Leanne, to finish her master’s degree hoping to whisk her away to a far-off land to complete her PhD.

Their younger brother, Jacob, falls for the captain’s daughter, Maryam, on a superyacht bound for the Caribbean, much to their parents’ dismay.

One generation later, Emanuel elopes with a not-too-much-older woman, Aloise, three months after high school, less than 24-hours after they meet only to discover he’s married to the enemy.

About the author:

Author Q/A

1) Why did you decide to write your books?

My imaginary friends won’t shut up until I write down their stories.

2) What was the most difficult thing about writing your books?

Wanting desperately for readers to like my stories.

3) Where do you get your inspiration?

My religious convictions to maintaining the laws of chastity and healthy living such as avoiding drugs and alcohol.

4) How do you get your creative writing juices flowing?

I have an instrumentals playlist that I’ve been listening to for so long that just putting on my headphones triggers my brain to start writing.

5) Do you base your fictional characters on real people you know?

Sometimes, probably a lot more than I realize. The people in our lives affect us and change us whether we know it or not. They will inevitably pop up into our stories.

6) What do you think makes a great story?

If the story keeps readers turning pages. If a story makes someone cry, laugh, and/or stay up half the night, you know you’ve created a great story.

7) What are you currently working on?

I’m just finishing publication of my Sayid Royal Family Saga, a five-book story with a cool twist. I’m also working on a spin-off story from that series called Honorary Prince, and I just finished writing the eighth book in my All’s Fair in Love and Sports Series, called Matching You with Love, which I co-wrote with Audi Lynn Anderson. It’s about a tennis player who’s trying to match up her friends with the cute guy next door when what she really should be doing is admitting she has feelings for him. Cute story.

The Bear of Rosethorn Ring ~ Review

The Bear of Rosethorn Ring:
A Snow White and Rose Red Story
Once Upon a Twist Tales #4
By Kirsten Ficher

Marita Kadlec has had enough and wants to let her father fly the nest, so to speak when he runs away via a hot air balloon. But Diamond is of a different mind than her twin sister, she wants a chance to do something for the father she has never known. Their search is more frustrating than anything until they stumble across a most disagreeable individual whose only care seems to be his beard.

But soon they discover there is a bit more to Lorcan D'vard than just an obsessive fixation on his beard. D'vard has an assassin seeking him out and he'll release their father to them, free of his debts if Marita and Diamond agree to rid D'vard of this killer.

But Marita is less than thrilled as her father's antics have caused endless issues over the years. But Diamond wants a chance to get to know her father and for Diamond, Marita is willing to help her father.

This book is about family, second chances, forgiveness, and love. Now I will admit this my first time reading Kirsten Fichter's work so I have not read the first three books in the series. I was able to read the book and enjoy it but the references to previous events make me want to read the previous books so that I know what exactly is being referred to. I like how Marita and Diamond are getting to know one another. I also like Felix and want to know more of his backstory. (I see a purchase from Amazon in my future.) And if you love fairytale retellings this book takes its cues from Snow White and Red Rose. Looking for a sweet read (with a few not-so-sweet moments) this is one for you.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

How far would Snow White and Rose Red go to save the man behind the bear?

When their father runs away, Marita and Diamond Kadlec realize how different twins can be. Marita’s ready to forget Lucas entirely, but Diamond wants to give him the second chance she’s never been able to give before. That’s before they discover that Lucas is indebted to the ill-tempered D’vard and his traveling circus, the Rosethorn Ring. The Ring’s entertainment lacks a bear, and Lucas must play the part of the savage creature to regain his freedom.

Lorcan D’vard cares only for three things: tending to his beloved beard, promoting his
Rosethorn Ring, and eradicating the assassin out to kill him. With time running out, D’vard
agrees to cancel Lucas’s debt and let him go free – if Marita and Diamond can apprehend the
assassin before the assassin ends the show.

This is Snow White and Rose Red with a twist like you’ve never seen it before.

About the Series:

Once Upon a Twist Tales are your favorite fairytales retold backwards and upside-down, with a little bit of steampunk thrown in for fun.

Other Books in the Series:

Book One ~ The Rose and the Balloon: A Beauty and the Beast Story

Book Two ~ Spindle Dreams: A Sleeping Beauty Story

Book Three ~ Diamond: A Rapunzel Story

About the Author:

Kirsten Fichter is a twenty-something Christian writer who loves being the wife to her favorite person ever, mommy to two precious blessings, a piano enthusiast, a dragon buff, a serious bookworm, and an INFP synesthete. Fairytales have always fascinated her, and she has made it her goal to rewrite as many as possible and become known as the “Grimm Dickens” (i.e. mixing Grimm fairytales with a Dickens style). She is present in many online circles under the name “Kiri Liz” if you care about things like that. As you read this, she’ll be somewhere under a maple tree – trying very hard to finish the seventeen and half other stories she unwisely started all at once.
