With This Pledge ~ Review

With This Pledge
The Carnton Novels #1
By Tamera Alexander

Tamera Alexander has once again brought history to life in a moving piece of literature. The horror and destructive power of war is brutally illustrated as Carnton Plantation provides sanctuary for some of the most desperately wounded of the Battle of Franklin, a battle that signaled the South's eventual defeat.

Lizzie Clouston has called Carnton home for several years, working as a governess to the family's two children. But when the war between the Federal and Confederate armies converges on the fields of Franklin, Tennessee, Lizzie is pressed into service assisting in the surgery of many Confederate soldiers whose very life hangs upon the outcome. But when Captain Roland Ward Jones asks her to promise him that she'll not allow the surgeon to remove his leg, Lizzie makes a promise that she hopes and prays she'll not regret.

War is a harsh taskmaster and it is determined to exact its price with losses on both sides and Lizzie finds herself offering aid and comfort to many who are about to breath their last. Several of these deaths touch her deeply especially one young man's to whom she feels burdened to find and locate his family.

When a nation is in turmoil how do you stay firm in your resolve? Lizzie has made promises and she'll do all she can to keep them even when it costs her. With This Pledge is a moving testament to the true story of Elizabeth Clouston and that of Captain Roland Jones as the world they knew changes and they are left with finding their new place in it. And facing the truth of what slavery truly was may be the hardest part to accept because to accept the truth about the evils of slavery casts those who rallied to its call in a light they'd rather not see themselves in. I think the most striking passage that illustrates this is when Roland looks upon his time of recovery from his injuries...
"Roland heard what George wasn't saying and yet was. And though
it struck a dissonant chord within him, he forced himself to look past
that and to his own life through the lens of George's--through the lens
of his own life over the past few weeks. He'd been powerless to change
anything. Had no control over his future. Felt like a prisoner in his
own body. And he would've done just about anything to be given the
chance to change that. What man wouldn't?

Roland looked up and saw Georges's outstretched hand. And grasped it."

Those who read the Christmas at Carnton novel will recognize the setting and some of the other characters. If you have not yet read the previous book don't worry this one can be easily read and followed on its own. This work of historical fiction set in Tennessee during the turbulent final months of the Civil War. The characters are relatable and I would love to get the chance to know more of them. And Tempy is a woman who may not have been allowed an education but the wisdom that she shares with those who call Carnton home is a treasure. Highly recommended reading.

I was provided a complimentary advance copy of this book by the publisher through TLC Book Tours with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

What can a woman
~ a mere governess ~
do against the scourge of slavery?

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Clouston’s quietly held principles oppose those of the Southern Cause—but when forty thousand soldiers converge on the fields of Franklin, Tennessee, the war demands an answer. The Carnton home, where she is governess, is converted into a Confederate field hospital, and Lizzie is called upon to assist the military doctor with surgeries that determine life or death. Faced with the unimaginable, she must summon fortitude, even as she fears for the life of Towny, her fiancĂ© and lifelong friend.
As a young soldier lies dying in Lizzie’s arms, she vows to relay his final words to his mother, but knows little more than the boy’s first name. That same night, decorated Mississippi sharpshooter Captain Roland Ward Jones extracts a different promise from Lizzie: that she intervene should the surgeon decide to amputate his leg.
Lizzie is nothing if not a woman of her word, earning the soldiers’ respect as she tends to the wounded within Carnton’s walls. None is more admiring than Captain Jones, who doesn’t realize she is pledged to another. But as Lizzie’s heart softens toward the Confederate captain, she discovers that his moral ground is at odds with her own. Now torn between love, principles, and pledges made, she struggles to be true to her own heart while standing for what she knows is right—no matter the cost.
From the pages of history and the personal accounts of those who endured the Battle of Franklin, Tamera Alexander weaves the real-life love letters between Captain Roland Ward Jones and Miss Elizabeth Clouston into a story of unlikely romance first kindled amid the shadows of war.

In the Shadow of Croft Towers ~ Review

In the Shadow of Croft Towers
By Abigail Wilson

At two and twenty Sybil Delafield is about to accept a position at Croft Towers as a lady's companion to Mrs. Chalcroft. But the journey is unexpectedly delayed when the weather turns dreary and they are waylaid by highwaymen. When she finally arrives at Croft Towers the hour is late and her appearance is less than impressive as she is wet, cold and utterly miserable.

Upon arriving Mrs. Chalcroft's nephew and nieces begin quizzing Sybil about the highwaymen and what she recollects of the incident and individuals. But when she meets recent arrival, Mr. Curtis Sinclair, godson to Mrs. Chalcroft, Sybil finds herself keeping just the first of many secrets that the Towers just seems to collect.  And then there is Mrs. Chalcroft whom Sybil meets in the wee hours of the night when she is acquainted with the unusual duties her position will entail. As the secrets, Sybil has promised to keep begin to accumulate she begins to wonder just what she has come into in her quest for answers about her own past.

Sybil soon finds that the task of delivering messages for Mrs. Chalcroft in secret is more difficult than she had anticipated. And then there is Mr. Sinclair who seems to be engaged in clandestine matters of his own. With few options, Sybil must rely upon the assistance of Mr. Sinclair when she finds herself in dire straights. But can she truly trust anyone at Croft Towers? Or will her assignments for Mrs. Chalcroft cost her her freedom and her life if she is discovered?

In the Shadow of Croft Towers is the kind of book one just doesn't want to put down. And there is just so much going on that it is hard to tell what is related to what so the reader is definitely left with suspicions about several of the characters. I have to say I was surprised by just how everything concluded and wished it had been fleshed out a bit more. Overall I really enjoyed this one and am looking forward to Abigael Wilson's future works.

Fans of Regency-era fiction will enjoy this one. Those who enjoyed Melanie Dickerson's Regency Spy series will find much to love about this debut novel. Get ready to read through the night! (Just be sure it is one where you won't have to work the next day)

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher through BookLook with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Croft Towers holds more than
its share of secrets . . . and Sybil is
determined to uncover them all.

When Sybil Delafield’s coach to Croft Towers was robbed by highwaymen, she should have realized that her new position as companion to old Mrs. Chalcroft would be no ordinary job. Upon Sybil’s arrival, Mrs. Chalcroft sneaks into her room in the dark of night, imploring her to relay messages to town that are to stay hidden from the rest of the family. Who exactly is she working for and what do the messages contain?

When fellow passengers of the robbed coach are later murdered, Sybil’s hunt for the truth takes on a new urgency. The only person she can rely on is Mr. Sinclair, Mrs. Chalcroft’s godson, but under all his charms he too leads a double life. Sybil must decide if he is the one honest voice she can trust, or if he is simply using her for his own advances.

With murderers, smugglers, and spies on the loose, nothing—and no one—in Regency England is what they claim. Can Sybil even trust what she knows about herself?

From debut author Abigail Wilson comes a shadowy Regency tale of secrets and spies, love and treachery.

Stores Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas ~ Review

Stories Behind the Great
 Traditions of Christmas
By Ace Collins

There are so many traditions involved with Christmas and all too often they are just done because it is the thing to do. But how often do we wonder about the reason behind these traditions and when they began?

In Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas Ace Collins shares with readers what he knows about a variety of the traditions. And the nostalgic yearning for Christmas of old - well it may not be how you imagine it was. Christmas was a celebration that would not bring a nostalgic remembrance before the nineteenth century - be sure to read the introduction and I think you'll agree it would have been a day to avoid.

The various aspects of what we have come to associate with Christmas are presented in 26 chapters starting with Advent and ending with Yule Logs. Some of these traditions have a spiritual aspect while others have just been accepted as part of the season because they draw friends and family together in a sharing of "the wonder, joy, and magic of the season. ... And that spirit is something worth celebrating."(pg. 148)

I enjoyed the history of the candy cane, mistletoe, and the X in Xmas (which has been in use since the sixteenth century). This is a book with much to offer in just over 200 pages and one that would be useful to have on hand whenever one has a question arise about any of these traditions. Did you know that The Nutcracker was vastly different than the ballet that is performed every year? It went through several transformations before it became the beloved performance that it is today.

This is a book that you'll want to share with friends and family - I know I did as I read through it which may have slowed down my reading as I went back to different sections that caught my attention. This book would also lend itself well to family reading time with all hearing it together and then discussing what was read. But however, you choose to read and share you'll enjoy and value the knowledge you will have gained.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher through BookLook with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Halley's Casino ~ Review and Giveaway

Halley's Casino
Halley's Casino #1
By Mark JG Fahey

Major newsflash what you thought you knew about Halley's Comet is totally wrong. First off it is not, I repeat not, a comet. Yes, you read that correctly Halley's Comet is, in fact, an interstellar vehicle constructed by an alien race thousands of years ago. And poor Nebula Yorker is about to find this out first-hand as he awaits the return of Halley's Comet in 1986.

Neb's life has been a most unusual one as he was an orphan who was adopted by an older couple who had observed the previous flyby of Halley's Comet in 1910. With parents who were 60 years older than him, Neb's upbringing was one of travel and learning. And they were always together except for a 2-week stint every year that his parents took to the Amazon, until two years previously when they never returned.

And tonight Neb is about to fulfill their wish to observe the comet only without them by his side. At least that is his plan until he has an otherworldly visit that will change his understanding of everything.

The one thing you must remember is that you can never go into the future - but the past, that is another matter altogether and not one easily explained. But beware without proper precautions the past can kill you. And someone has nefarious plans in the works and Neb might not survive his first encounter with space-faring sentient lifeforms who have an utter fascination with Star Trek (the 1960s Original series).

Now, this is not my usual reading fare but the description intrigued me and I was soon drawn into the story. So drawn in that I spent a Saturday reading and not regretting a moment spent in the task. There are a few words that are in the gray area but nothing that one doesn't hear when walking through a store. There are a few surprises that are revealed towards the end of the book that just adds to the mystery of Neb and his life. And the impact Neb Yorker makes upon those he encounters - well let's just say Ancient Rome is sure to not forget his visit.

Teens and up are sure to enjoy this one if they are fans of sci-fi with a good dash of humor flavoring it. And if you are looking for something new give this a try. Get ready for an out of this world - out of this time experience.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the author with no expectations except that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

Be sure to come back on January 18th when the second book in the Halley's Casino series is reviewed.

Book Description:

Halley’s Casino is set in 1986. 26-year old Nebula Yorker (Neb to his friends), is patiently awaiting the return of Halley’s Comet. He is about to discover that the world is not what it seems.

Upon the arrival of Halley’s Comet, Neb is confronted by a mysterious stranger who literally swoops out of the night sky. What happens next will change the course of Neb’s life and that of all he befriends.

This stranger (Mr. Tict) reveals to Neb that Halley’s is not a comet at all, but an Intergalactic Casino that has been posing as a comet for countless years. Mr. Tict is the Concierge of the Casino and he has come back to Earth to recruit Neb as his assistant.

What happens next is an eye-opening experience for young Neb that no one on Earth can imagine. It can only be explained by watching old Star Trek reruns, while eating cheese sandwiches and drinking hot chocolate. From androids with attitude to a vast assortment of alien beings and historic individuals, with a touch of time travel from ancient Babylon to 1757 London and back to Rome of 12 BCE, Neb soon learns that his past, present and future have always lain in the stars above.

It’s a rock and roll ride chock full of chaos, a formidable nemesis, drama, satire, humour, death and new beginnings, with revelations that Neb never saw coming.

Even John Lennon is amused!

Starting out on a quiet evening of stargazing, Nebula Yorker finds himself caught up in the most extraordinary time travel and planet-saving adventure of a lifetime.

And that’s only the beginning of what is to come.

Marrying Miss Milton ~ Review

Marrying Miss Milton
Brides of Brighton #2
By Ashtyn Newbold

Jane Milton has been secretly in love with the Viscount of Barnet since she caught a glimpse of him 7 years prior. At 15 her heart was impressed with what she saw as he rode his horse and she fancied a future with him. But how is one to make an impression and receive an offer of marriage when nary a word or a passing glance is exchanged?

With the marriage of her three younger more perfect sisters (she couldn't compare as her mother so kindly pointed out every chance she got) Jane is now to receive her parents attention in securing her a match. But with her heart's desire removing himself to Brighton for the season Jane is quite beside herself at her lost chance.

When an opportunity is arranged for Jane to go to Brighton as a Lady's companion she had no idea just what she was about to experience (or perhaps endure would be a better word). Caught is a position with her reputation ruined Jane is forced into a marriage, not of her choosing, mere days after arriving in Brighton. And worse she finds herself facing a future as the wife of Philip Honeyfield a new named marquess who just a month before was no one of note at least to the ladies of society.

Can a marriage resulting from one unexpected and unchaperoned exchange result in a lifetime of misery? Jane and Philip are about to find out.

This is the second book in the Brides of Brighton series and it is as delightful as the first (A Convenient Engagement) and several of the main characters from the previous book make appearances here as well. As Philip and Jane work through their new and unexpected circumstances they must first get to know who the other one is before they can hope for anything other than a lonely foreseeable future.

And anyone who read the first book will recall Lord Ramsbury whom Amelia did not marry, well he offers Philip some advice which may or may not be helpful. And one has to commiserate with him and hope that he will someday find a young woman who will be happy to marry him for who he is and not the title he holds.

Sit back in a favorite cozy corner with a warm cup of tea, a shortbread cookie (or two) and get lost in yet another delightfully sweet Regency-era romance from Ashtyn Newbold. This one falls in the gentle reads and clean romance category so feel free to share with readers of all ages.

About the Book:

One must never underestimate the consequence of a simple kiss…

Tall, dark, and brooding, the Viscount of Barnet stole Jane Milton’s heart the day she saw him astride his black horse in the woods. With her three seemingly perfect younger sisters now married, Jane might finally have a chance to win him over. When she learns of his upcoming trip to Brighton, she grasps at an opportunity to be a companion to an elderly woman there, in order to follow—er—accompany Lord Barnet to the seaside town.

Mr. Philip Honeyfield has suffered the dreaded misfortune of inheriting a title. Ungainly and shy, how can he perform well in the eye of society? To navigate his new role, Philip seeks advice from an unlikely source. When he is smitten by his grandmother’s new companion, Miss Jane Milton, his advisor offers one final piece of counsel: he must kiss her at the upcoming ball.

But a moonlit kiss can be catastrophic when witnessed by a cunning mother, a marriage can be inconvenient when forced, and a woman’s heart can be difficult to win when it belongs to another. Can an unexpected love conquer Jane’s resentment and Philip’s regret? Or will that simple kiss turn out to be his greatest misfortune of all?
Marrying Miss Milton is a sweet & clean regency romance novel.

The Marriage Bargain ~ Review

The Marriage Bargain
Family Blessings #4
By Stephanie Dees

Jules Sheehan opened her home to the two children of her best friend following a tragic accident that left them orphans. Providing a home for Eleanor and Emma is something she never thought would become a reality but she's determined to keep them safe from their grandmother and she'll do anything to keep that promise. She just never imagined she'd have to get married to keep it.

Cam Quinn hasn't been back to Red Hill Springs since he was kicked out of the family home when he was 15 years old by an angry stepfather. He last saw Glory when she was 6 years old and the time he lost with her is a regret that he is determined to not repeat her daughters. When he offered to help Jules with the girls he never imagined that his assistance would mean getting married to Jules and having the family he had always wanted.

But how long will this marriage last when it is in name only? Cam and Jules are determined to do what is best for the girls and convince everyone looking in that they have the stable loving family that is needed to keep Eleanor and Emma away from Cam and Glory's mother. But will they lose their hearts to each other and become a true family? Or will their differences keep them apart?

This is the fourth book in the Family Blessings series and is perhaps my favorite. There is just so much that Jules and Cam are having to deal with - personal loss, grieving children, maintaining their careers, and a marriage of convenience. And then the rest of the Sheehan siblings are dealing with their own lives that have been unexpectedly blessed as well. And then there is Bertie mom to the whole Sheehan bunch who has a surprise of her own for the family and will have a far-reaching impact on Red Hill Springs - an impact that just adds to Jules stress and burden at a time when she's about maxed out. This was a true delight to read as we finally get to know Jules better.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the author with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.
