The Secrets Beneath ~ Review

The Secrets Beneath
Treasures of the Earth #1
By Kimberley Woodhouse

The Secrets Beneath is a historical fiction piece set in 1870s Montana, within the Wyoming Territory. It is a time when everything discovered is truly unique and awe-inspiring. In this world, we are introduced to an intriguing cast of characters who contrast sharply with one another.

Anna Lakeman has spent years working alongside her father, a paleontologist. Working as the illustrator for his digs, Anna isn't your normal 19th-century young lady. She loves what she does and supports the field of study in the only way she can - through her drawings.  Three years ago, her heart was broken when Joshua Ziegler left.

When Joshua left to pursue his medical education, he spoke out against Anna's work on her father's digs. Returning home for a short break, Joshua can only hope to make it right with Anna or at least ask for her forgiveness. But when Anna's father falls ill, and Joshua's nephew goes missing, fate seems to be conspiring against them.

And then there is Julian Walker, considered odd by everyone and the son of Old Walker, the meanest, wealthiest man in the region. One feels for Julian Walker, his background, and the opinions of those who live nearby, well, it all adds up to a sad history. And yet, one can't blame those who know him, though "know" is inadequate when considering his limited interactions with the community.

So, let me say I really enjoyed this book. The setting was beautifully described while not bogging one down in too much detail. And then, one can feel moments of terror as Anna struggles to withstand the force that is trying to destroy her. (Yes, you need to read the book because any more info will ruin the suspense).  The characters drive this story with their varied personalities, full of depths waiting to come to life as one progresses through the book.

If you like your books to be a well-balanced blend of genres, this book will take care of that. Romance, Mystery, Suspense, Inspiration, and History all come together beautifully in this book. I was drawn in from the opening lines.

This is the first book in the Treasures of the Earth series, and it promises to be a most enlightening and enjoyable reading experience. This book is one I would highly recommend to anyone who loves historical fiction with a touch of suspense and mystery.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Garden of the Midnights ~ Review

Garden of the Midnights
By Hannah Linder

Twenty plus years ago he was threatened with the truth, a truth he wanted buried. And now he has to face what he had tried to avoid.

William Kensley has never wanted to be someplace but Rosenleigh Manor. But when accidents suddenly start befalling him he must confort the ugly truth - the accidents are no accident. Could someone be trying to kill him? But why? Believing the truth behind his unknown father could hold the key, he sets off to learn what he can.

What he learns will shatter his world.

Isabella Gresham is expected to marry well, her father has expectations for her. But Isabella has expectations as well, and giving away her heart isn't one of them. When she meets William there is something between them, something that will bring her an unexpected joy and enjoyment of life. But circumstances being what they are prevent even a thought of romance.

There is danger that stalks them both, and unless they can discover the truths long buried it may destroy them both.

This was a excellent read from Hannah Linder. This is the first book have read by her, though I will admit to have two of her other books in my TBR pile next to my bed. Guess which books are moving there way up the stack.

This book was a wonderful blend of Suspense, History, Romance, and Inspiration. Both Isabella and William have been brought up in a web of lies. Lies that when one strand is pulled free starts to unravel all around it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something new.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

The accidents are not a matter of chance. They are deliberate. As English
gentleman William Kensley becomes aware of the danger at Rosenleigh Manor, he
pleads for the truth of his past from the only man he can trust—until that man is
murdered.

As the secrets unfold into scandal, William’s world is tipped into destitution, leaving him
penniless and alone. His only comfort is in the constant friendship and love of
Isabella Gresham. If he does not have their nonsense at the seashore, their laughter,
their reckless adventures, has he anything at all?

He should have known that would be ripped from him too. When a hidden foe arises
from their acquaintances and imperils Isabella’s life, William may be the only one willing
to risk his life to rescue her. But even if he frees Isabella from her captors, will he still
have to forsake her heart?

Some sacrifice everything for love. Others sacrifice love for everything else. In this
haunting tale of rigid social prejudices and heart-aching regrets, the greatest decision of
their life will be determined in the garden of the midnights.

The Legacy of Longdale Manor ~ Review

The Legacy of Longdale Manor
By Carrie Turansky

When Gwen Morris makes a costly error she is sent to England's Lake District in a hope to redeem herself and get out of the public's eye. What she never expected was to find a link to her own family. With questions about her father she sets off on a journey of discovery while at Longdale Manor. But some questions are almost impossible to answer when secrets are closely guarded. But with the help of David Bradford, grandson of the owner of Longdale Manor, Gwen looks for what may be long hidden away in the rescesses of the home.

Charlotte Harper is doing what she can to see that her mother and sister are provided for. But in 1912 any meaningful employment for women is nearly impossible to find. Fortunately the Storey family has offered them a place in their home. And as Charlotte grows closer to Ian she has to deal with what she sees as a betrayal. And this betrayal will have an affect on her life and her decisions. But can all of life be judged by another's deceit? This is something that Charlotte will have to discover before she can move forward.

I love how these two story threads are woven together. The questions that both Gwen and Charlotte face are ones so many have to face at some point in life. The struggles that they face and their reactions to disappointments along the way make the journey meaningful when we get to the end. Was it worth the fight that they put forth? Or a fruitless endeavor? This is a lovely book that is worthy of its cover and one you won't want to miss!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own

While at Longdale Manor, she meets David Bradford--the owner's handsome grandson--who is desperate to save the crumbling estate by turning it into a luxury hotel. When Gwen stumbles upon a one-hundred-year-old journal and an intricately carved shepherd's staff similar to one in a photo of her parents, she's left searching for answers.

In 1912, after her father's death, Charlotte Harper uncovers a painful family secret she can only confess to her journal. She and her family travel to the Lake District to stay on a sheep farm, hoping eventually to find a home with Charlotte's grandfather at Longdale Manor, but old wounds and bitter regrets make it a difficult challenge. Captivated by the Cowgirl ~ Review

Captivated by the Cowgirl
Colorado Cowgirls #4
By Jody Hedlund

With both her sisters married, Felicity Courtney is on her own. And against their wishes, she has taken in boarders - an older couple after the husband is stricken with a condition that has made him an invalid.

But the late nights of caring have left Felicity exhausted, forcing her to seek out a hired hand to handle the outside chores. What she never expected was Philip Berg offering to do the work, much less show up to do it. She thought Philip too arrogant to lower himself to do domestic chores with his own hands.

Two years ago, she would have been right about Philip's ability to do chores. But living life on the run from an assassin has changed Philip. First, he's had to hide his identity - after all, a prince on the run can't use his true name or his title if he hopes to live. What he never anticipated was developing feelings for Felicity Courtney.

But feelings for Felicity have developed, and his heart has now put her in danger. Because the assassin will use his feelings against him if it is discovered just how deep they run. To stay ahead of this killer, Philip may have to sacrifice his future happiness unless he can stop the assassin from completing his task.

Captivated by the Cowgirl is the fourth and final book in the Colorado Cowgirls series, bringing it to a satisfying conclusion. The Courtney sisters haven't had an easy time of it in Fairplay, Colorado, struggling to make ends meet while paying off their late uncle's debts, inheriting a gold mine that was being robbed by a potential suitor, and then nearly being conned out of everything by a cousin who wasn't a cousin. These poor girls needed a break of some kind, but it is not happening anytime soon for Felicity. Not unless she can hire someone to help out around the boarding house, and in her opinion, Philip won't be the help she needs. Especially once she finds out the secrets he's been keeping.

This book can be read as a standalone title, though it works best reading it in the series order just for the backstory. Fans of Jody Hedlund or Love Inspired books will enjoy this historical romance set in Colorado. And if you are a fan of Prince in disguise stories, you won't want to miss this one. The characters are interesting to get to know, and it was nice that Felicity got her chance to take center stage after helping her sisters out in the previous books in the series.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Now that her sisters are both married, Felicity Courtney manages the Courtney Boardinghouse alone. After nearly collapsing from exhaustion while caring for an invalid man and his wife who are staying at the boardinghouse, Felicity posts an advertisement for a hired hand.

Philip Berg, a prince in disguise, is hiding in Fairplay while attempting to stay one step ahead of an assassin. When the spirited Felicity Courtney tacks up a notice that she is hiring help, he offers to do the job as he is unable to leave her in such distress. Although he knows his presence could pose danger and that he needs to move on from Fairplay, he can’t tear himself away.

Felicity has no intention of employing the handsome but exasperating Philip Berg, but when an early winter storm hits, she finds herself battling the elements and is grateful for his assistance. Love begins to blossom, but secret revelations and encroaching peril threaten to tear them apart forever. “This one’s worth rounding up.” — Booklist, on Falling for the Cowgirl

*All of the books in the Colorado Cowgirls series are sweet, closed-door romances with plenty of sizzle. The inspirational themes are light, and the romance is the main focus of the books.

A Beautiful Disguise ~ Mini Review with Author Q & A

A Beautiful Disguise
The Imposters #1
By Roseanna M. White

She lives her life hidden in plain sight. Lady Marigold Fairfax and her brother Yates Fairfax have created an illusion, showing London Society what they want them to see. But in the shadows, they seek answers - they are The Imposters!

To save their estate and provide for those under their care Marigold and Yates, along with those closest to them, have formed an investigative company. They find answers that others are unable to procure. And now they've been called on to determine the loyalty of someone they know. Can they find the evidence needed to clear him? Or will they prove he is a traitor to king and country?

A Beautiful Disguise is the exciting and intriguing debut of a new series from Roseanna M. White. All the world's a stage, as the saying goes, and Marigold, known to the Ton as Lady M, is making London her stage. With careful planning and extraordinary skill, she has convinced Society that she is something other than what she truly is. But who hides beneath the feathers and almost garish colors? Sir Merritt Livingstone is determined to discover the truth for himself, while the anonymous but skilled Imposters aid him in his own investigation, an investigation that could have far-reaching effects if his suspicions prove true.

This is a must-read as summer winds down (though the temperatures don't agree with this assessment).
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

In Edwardian London, not all that glitters is gold as a lady and an intelligence officer’s secret mission take them from the city’s dazzling ballrooms to its covert intelligence offices.

Sir Merritt Livingstone has spent a decade serving the monarch in the field, but when pneumonia lands him behind a desk in the War Office Intelligence Division just as they’re creating a new secret intelligence branch, he’s intent on showing his worth. He suspects an aristocrat of leaking information to Germany as tensions mount between the two countries, but he needs someone to help him prove it, so he turns to The Imposters, Ltd. No one knows who they are, but their results are beyond compare.

Left with an estate on the brink of bankruptcy after their father’s death, Lady Marigold Fairfax and her brother open a private investigation firm for the elite to spy on the elite. Dubbed The Imposters, Ltd., their anonymous group soon becomes the go-to for the crème of society who want answers delivered surreptitiously. But the many secrets Marigold learns about her peers pale in comparison to her shock when she and her brother are hired to investigate her best friend’s father as a potential traitor.

Lady Marigold is determined to discover the truth for her friend’s sake, and she’s more determined still to keep her heart from getting involved with this enigmatic new client . . . who can’t possibly be as noble as he seems.

Author Q&A:

Can you please tell us a little bit about your new series, THE IMPOSTERS?

RW: I’d be delighted! THE IMPOSTERS combines quite a few super fun elements—a glittery high-society Edwardian setting that will appeal to Downton Abbey fans . . . some tension, suspense, and mystery . . . a romance (of course) . . . a sibling relationship that was a real joy to write . . . and even some circus themes!

In A Beautiful Disguise, readers are introduced to Marigold and Yates Fairfax. Is there anything else readers show know about this interesting sibling pair?

RW: Oh my. Let’s just say that though Yates is now the earl and his sister is a London fashion icon, neither are quite what they seem. These two spend their leisure hours training on the trapeze, the high wire, and the rings and bars. They condition their bodies to do all the stunts that, rather than entertain under the Big Top, help them gather the information they need for their cases. They can get into and out of anywhere—and have fun doing it.

Where did Marigold and Yates pick up the unique skills needed to open The Imposters, Ltd.?

RW: Well, you see, the same entertainments that their father spent their entire fortune on— traveling circuses, acrobatic troupes, theater groups, and the like—were their greatest influences. As children, they literally dreamed of running off to join the circus, but when reality insisted they take on the duties of the Fairfax title and save their beloved estate, they decided to use their very particular skills to help them investigate their own. Their names get them into any event . . . and their ability to scale walls and put on any role through their closet of disguises and costumes ensures they can collect all the details they need. Many of your books include themes of espionage.

Can you share with us some historical context for the setting of the novel? What major events in world history influence the story and its characters?

RW: England and Germany were in the middle of an arms-and-naval race that eventually led to the Great War; Germany had only recently announced a frightful warship, and England had answered with the Dreadnaught. During the months of my story, new legislature was being pushed in England for a major ramp-up of battleship production. Though England’s reigning king was the first cousin of Germany’s kaiser (and Russia’s czar), tensions had never been higher between the countries, and their politics had diverged in some key ways.

Then toss in, ahem, some literary mayhem. One of the most popular authors of the day was William Le Queux, who wrote—you guessed it—spy novels. They were all based on the idea that Germany had secret agents infiltrating England (totally untrue, in retrospect), and it caused a real mania. Every German was reported, and the authorities were flooded with claims of seeing spies at work. It was all nonsense, but it did convince the government to take all their different (and inefficient) intelligence branches—that of the army, the navy, and the police— and combine them into one group: MI5.

Was there anything that you found particularly interesting in your research that you included in your book?

RW: Something I probably should have known before but had never looked into is the Coldstream Guard. We know them as the stone-faced guards of the palaces. You know, the ones who supposedly won’t flinch or break character no matter what you do. This Guard is, in fact, the most elite of England’s army, kind of like our SEALs or Rangers. They get the palace posting because they’ve earned it through the best training and field service. I decided to make my hero, Sir Merritt Livingstone, a member of the Coldstream Guards, but then relegated him to a desk job because of a lingering bout of pneumonia. But he brought a lot of training and honor to the new position!

How can readers connect with you?

RW: You can find me on all the major social media platforms @RoseannaMWhite, and you can sign up for my newsletter and visit my shop full of signed books and other bookish delights at RoseannaMWhite.com. I love chatting with readers.

Convincing the Cowgirl ~ Review

Convincing the Cowgirl
Colorado Cowgirls #3
By Jody Hedlund

When an unknown cousin unexpectedly shows up, claiming the Courtney sisters' inheritance, Patience Courtney has mere hours to find a new home for both Felicity and herself. With Charity gone, Patience feels the failure of losing their home and money personally. With little time to contemplate the consequences, she accepts an offer of marriage from her neighbor, Spencer Wolcott.

In need of someone who won't desert his daughter, again, Spencer is desperate for a permanent solution. When the situation at the Courtney home becomes known, he is convinced to make one of the sisters an offer of marriage before the rest of the eligible bachelors in the area hear of their plight.

Spencer's offer was the answer to her prayers. Thinking she would never have anyone seek her out and offer for her hand, his was most unexpected. Soon, she finds her heart captured by his daughter. Evangeline needed a loving hand to keep her in check and to guide her away from the almost constant influence his hands have had on her personality.

But when a series of misunderstandings arise, the happiness that Patience thought was soon to be hers seems to be an impossible dream. A dream she never thought to have, much less lose.

Convincing the Cowgirl is the third book in the Colorado Cowgirls series which focuses mainly on the Courtney sisters. The Colorado Cowboys introduced us to Fairplay, Colorado, and the McQuaid family. This series has glimpses of the McQuaids, but they are now a background element. I find the Courtney sisters interesting as they are a product of their Quaker upbringing but also influenced by their parent's decision to leave the community behind. This is their story, a story of overcoming obstacles and difficulties, to make a place for themselves in a new place. And believe me, these sisters have more than their share of troubles.

If you are a fan of Jody Hedlund, or just like Historical Romance set in the post-Civil War era of the American West, you are in for a treat with this newest addition. So plan a weekend read around Convincing the Cowgirl and relax as Patience and Spencer decide just what they want out of life. Will it be one another? Or will they admit defeat and give up on their marriage of convenience before it has a chance of succeeding?

The Baron and the Lady Chemist ~ Review

The Baron and the Lady Chemist JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for
The Baron and the Lady Chemist by Alissa Baxter,

The Baron and the Lady Chemist
The Baron and the Lady Chemist
The Grantham Girls #2
By Alissa Baxter

Dorothea Grantham is fascinated by chemistry. It is her passion. A passion that is frowned upon and even discouraged by her Aunt Eliza. What's worse, she is encouraged to not speak on it for fear she will ruin her chances at a good match. Everyone knows gentlemen don't want a thinking woman for a wife; rather, they seek a pretty face and a title and/or a dowry.

When Lord Castleroy (James) first meets Thea, it is in a most unfortunate setting, a little experiment has gone awry, and she is in need of rescue. James sees in Thea a chance for meaningful conversation but is puzzled at her abrupt departure for the mundane, everyday topic. But her silk shawls and scarves soon catch his attention and garner suspicion as to their true origin.

Thea's experimentation has skilled her in transforming plain silk into true works of art when she puts her needle to use. Soon she garners the attention of silk smugglers and finds herself in danger.

But her heart is in even greater danger of falling to the charms of a certain Baron who has been paying her particular attention. But love comes with its own dangers and pains, which Thea is concerned about pursuing.

This is the second in The Grantham Girls series and just as lovely and delightful as the first book, The Duke and the Lady Gardener. This reads better in order but can be read as a standalone. The characters are engaging and I totally sympathize with Thea and her perspective on things. Another perfect escape into the Regency Era for a little bit of me-read-time.

I was provided a complimentary of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Dragonblade Publishing
Release Date:
August 3, 2023
Genre: Regency Romance (Sweet/Clean)

Their chemistry creates a chain reaction . . . but will love be the final result?

Dorothea Grantham has always been fascinated by chemistry and spends most days conducting experiments in her laboratory at Grantham Place, staining silk with gold, silver, and other metals using chemical processes.

Thea embroiders the beautiful gold and silver silk shawls she creates and enjoys wearing them, but her grandmother, Lady Longmore, advises her not to reveal to anyone outside the family circle that she has created the fashion items herself, concerned her granddaughter might be seen as an oddity.

When Thea enters Society, her shawls attract a great deal of attention and become the talk of the town. James, Lord Castleroy, takes a particular interest in her work, having inherited a share in his grandfather’s silk mill in Macclesfield.

Eager to invest in the ailing silk industry, the baron studies Miss Grantham’s silks with an admiring—and increasingly suspicious—eye, believing the fabrics to be smuggled imported silk. As he spends more time with the enterprising young lady, however, his interest in her quickly extends beyond his business affairs to engulf his guarded heart.

But Lord Castleroy isn’t the only person in London interested in Thea’s exquisite creations. And when a silken web of intrigue entangles her in real danger, Thea must trust the devotion of a man she never expected—or intended—to fall in love with.

The Art of Love and Lies ~ Review

The Art of Love and Lies
A Proper Romance
By Rebecca Anderson

Rosanna Hawkins and her sisters have been afforded a most unusual upbringing - their parents have allowed them to pursue their passions. Rosanna's has made her a most accomplished artist, though not under her own name. Rather she recreates the masterpieces so those in England can enjoy "parlor versions" in their own homes. At least that's what her employer has told her.

With the art exhibition being held in Manchester, Rosanna has daily access to some of the world's greatest pieces including Michaelangelo’s The Manchester Madonna. And she also enjoys a harmless bit of flirting with Inspector Martin Harrison, who is head of the exhibition's security.

When it becomes clear that someone is switching Rosanna's "parlor versions" for the real pieces she finds herself at the top of the suspect list. Now the true dangers of allowing young ladies to be independent have come to light. Her all too trusting nature have made her easy prey as she wasn't under her parents' watchful eye. But Rosanna isn't about to allow herself to be a victim and is more than willing to help Martin capture the true criminal and restore the priceless treasures to their rightful owners. But can he ever trust her, much less love her?

This was a delightful read and one in which the author thoroughly engaged my attention. The characters had depth and the settings were described so that I felt I was moving amongst it and the fellow exhibit visitors. I would love to revisit these characters in a future book. If love sweet romance, a touch of intrigue, and fun banter look no further for your next read - you've found it in The Art of Love and Lies.

About the Book:
A free-spirited artist teams up with a no-nonsense detective to capture a thief
who has stolen a priceless Michaelangelo painting.

Manchester, England, 1857

Rosanna Hawkins is one of Manchester’s finest artists, even though no one knows her name. She reproduces “parlor versions” of classic masterpieces with near-perfect precision, which her employer then sells to the emerging upper-middle class families.

When the largest art exhibition ever to be held in England opens in Manchester, Rosanna is excited to visit. She meets the handsome Inspector Martin Harrison, who is head of security, and is immediately intrigued by his charm, confidence, and portrait-worthy good looks. The two spend many a flirtatious afternoon exploring the exhibition hall, discussing art, and sharing their secret hopes. Rosanna dreams of painting something original and meaningful, and Martin hopes to one day shed the shadow of his father’s notorious past.

But when they discover the theft of some of the paintings—and all the evidence points to Rosanna—she must convince Inspector Harrison she is innocent and proposes a plan to capture the real art thief.

It is a daring race to catch the criminal before he disappears with the most priceless piece in the collection—Michaelangelo’s The Manchester Madonna. If Rosanna and Inspector Harrison fail, not only will the painting be lost forever but so will their chance to paint their own happily ever after.

Cherishing the Cowgirl ~ Review

Cherishing the Cowgirl
Colorado Cowgirls #2
By Jody Hedlund

In Committing to the Cowgirl, we were introduced to the Courtney sisters. Having come to Colorado in search of a better life, Charity is faced with the truth they may lose the house they inherited from their uncle. With few options, Charity may be forced to accept a marriage of convenience to provide a home for herself and her younger sisters, Patience and Felicity. But when she saves Hudson Vanderwater's life, she may have very well changed her future.

Hudson Vanderwater is determined to connect the East and the West with another railroad line. His ideas aren't well met in Fairplay, whose ranchers need a North/South route for their cattle. And until Charity rescued him from a dangerous situation, no one would have ever expected him to be anything other than a cold-hearted, financially motivated rich guy. But there is another side to him, one that wants to offer help to young women in need. And his plan to help Charity involves a bit of high-handedness, but ultimately results in his renting her boardinghouse and employing her for an entire month.

Charity is left with little choice in the matter, but she quickly regrets her agreement. But there is a small part of her that hopes he is the answer to her long-held wishes that she could have a fairytale come true.

Cherishing the Cowgirl is the second book in the Colorado Cowgirls series, but it can be read and enjoyed on its own. It is interesting contrasting Charity and Hudson's different expectations in life. Charity hopes for love, while Hudson expects a business arrangement. Hudson expects everything he wants to be his, while Charity expects nothing. Can two people from such different worlds hope for something more? Or will it be doomed from the start?

Naturally, with books from Jody Hedlund, one expects romance, but this time, there is also an undercurrent of mystery involved. Someone may be taking advantage of the Courtney sister's situation. But who? And is it intentional or accidental? And even more worrisome, is it dangerous? But how is Charity to determine the truth when she can find no evidence of anything?

Another winner from Jody Hedlund for anyone who loves historical romance!
