Against the Wind ~ Review

Against the Wind
Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing #2
By Amanda Cabot

Louisa Vaughn is returning home after seven months away, she's been training as a midwife and a doctor and has no intention of staying in Sweetwater Crossing. But when she comes across an injured man, she has to help. And with no doctor in Sweetwater, she knows her couple days will be at least six weeks.

Joshua (Josh) Porter is determined to prove himself to his grandfather and be given control of the family business. But a broken leg, a missing horse, and his weeks of research for his plan for the family business may put a serious crimp in his plans. But laid up for six weeks with a broken leg, there's not much he can do to prove to his grandfather that he is the best man for the job.

Sweetwater Crossing is a welcoming place, but they aren't willing to accept Louisa as a doctor. In fact, some are more than a little unkind in their criticism of her just because a woman can't handle anything much or her intelligence is lacking. Even those she considered friends are skeptical of her skills.

As Louisa and Josh struggle with fighting for their futures and their dreams, they encourage one another while growing closer. But a future together is impossible as Josh's will take him to New York and Louisa's is in Sweetwater near her sisters.

This is the second book in the Secrets in Sweetwater Crossing series, and it picks up not too long past the conclusion of book one. Sweetwater is an interesting town - everyone knows everyone's business, and on the surface, they appear caring and concerned. But it's when you get to know them a little more that you realize that there are undercurrents of pettiness and cruelty. But it is overcoming these obstacles that strength of character is born (or discovered). In other words, it is like any place and time. I have to say I'm glad that Louisa was able to return to her home. And that she found a reason to remain and reestablish her damaged relationship with Emily. I found this to be an excellent read and am looking forward to the next book in the series. If you love post-Civil War Historical Fiction, you should enjoy this book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Doctor-in-training Louisa Vaughn has no intention of remaining in Sweetwater Crossing. She's just there for a few days to help a friend. But she can't abandon the injured man she finds at the side of the road. Until his broken leg heals, she'll serve as the town's doctor and midwife. She may not be fully qualified yet, but surely she's better than nothing.

Josh Porter's plans to win his grandfather's challenge and fulfill his father's final wish to gain full control of the family business hit a roadblock when he breaks his leg. But his enforced stay in Sweetwater Crossing gives him new ideas about the expansion of the company into new territory--ideas Louisa could help turn into reality.

If only the town were more accepting of Louisa's talents! Someone is determined to convince her to abandon her dream of healing others. Can Josh help her uncover the person behind the threats before it's too late? And is there any future for them together when neither of them plans to stay?

Welcome to the Blog Tour for
Children of the Shadows by Erica Vetsch,

Children of the Shadows
Children of the Shadows
Thorndike & Swann Regency Mysteries #3
By Erica Vetsch

Detective Daniel Swann has to fight for his inheritance, which should have been his all along. But he must be silent so as to not upset the aristocracy, this includes not making public his intentions to ask for Juliette Thorndike's hand in marriage.

With her parents again called away on a mission, Juliette is told to consider her future. Does she truly want to be an agent for the Crown? Or has she succumbed to the excitement and thrill of doing something daring? With orders from her parents her immediate future is looking rather boring. Until rumors of missing street urchins are heard. Could Juliette do something to get to the answers of these whispered concerns? And could this provide her with an excuse to spend time with Daniel?

As with the previous two books in the series, there is an abundance of mystery. The issues involving Daniel's past and his claims to his rightful inheritance add  new complications to the lives of those closest to Juliette. As Daniel's past, present, and future all come to a point, he finds himself being pulled in different directions, even as he faced the possibility of breaking not only his heart but Juliette's. My only complaint with this book is that it is the conclusion to the series. I highly recommend this book and the series. If you love a good Regency era whodunit look no furthet.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Christian Regency Mystery

Detective Daniel Swann and debutante Juliette Thorndike once again team up to solve a dangerous mystery--while trying to keep their growing romance secret.

Someone is preying upon the street children of Regency London. They seem to think no one will notice when urchins go missing--and even if they are noticed, who will care?

Daniel needs to do something about the missing children. But with recent revelations about his past and an unexpected, somewhat unwelcome inheritance to deal with, this is a terrible time to dive back into the seedy underbelly of the crime world. Nevertheless, he's still a Bow Street runner, and his partner Lady Juliette is sensitive to the plight of these wayward youngsters. They're on the case, searching shadowed alleys and coal-drenched streets to find the missing.

But the tangle of expectation and the dynamics of power cannot be easily ignored, even if there are children in danger. When Daniel's past threatens to overwhelm his future, he will need a miracle and the help of his friends to both apprehend the villain and unravel his tangled family web. And it may be that his new responsibilities demand that he leave the children of the shadows to their terrible fate--or lose everything.

Erica Vetsch's popular Regency mystery series concludes with a bang, sure to satisfy readers who have hung on every page since book one.

Guard Her Heart ~ Review

Guard Her Heart

Crown of Promise #2
By Hannah Currie
Published by WhiteCrown

Lady Mykah feels the call to aid those who are in need. She has never questioned that. But she has kept her identity secret as she moves through the night, leaving aid at the door of those whose needs she knows. But Mykah has made an enemy, an enemy who seeks her death.

Sir Finnigan has long sought his elder brother's approval. He's never questioned the orders he's been given until now. When Finnigan shoots and nearly kills the young woman who stole his heart years ago, he determines that his loyalty lies not with his brother but with the king and the young woman known as the Guardian of Raedonleith.

Determined to make amends for his actions, Finnigan rides to give warning and to win the heart of the lady who captured his heart years ago.

I really enjoyed this book, which is set in the time of knights and chivalry. It was interesting watching events unfold and seeing how the various characters were woven together. Even more so when saw events from differing perspectives. Who do you trust, and who do you hold at arm's length. I liked Mykah, but I also felt her feelings about Finnigan were most interesting, considering her position on other matters.  And I felt Finnigan showed a strength of character in both his dealings with his brother and his later efforts in Raedonleith.  This is the second book in the Crown of Promise series but it can be read as a standalone title. I'm sure the first book provides information that would explain more about King Lior and Mykah's sister Evangeline, but it could easily be read later to answer any questions that arise while reading.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

To all bar a few, the Guardian of Raedonleith is a mystery. To Lady Mykah, the second daughter of King Lior, it’s her calling. For the past four years, the mask has given Mykah a way to care for her people in her father’s stead while she hides from them how distant their king has become. She has never questioned her mission or thought the cost too high—until the night an arrow finds her. Though she has the courage of a knight and the calling of the Almighty, Mykah admits she would have died if not for the man who carried her to safety. A man who is as determined to keep his identity hidden as she is.

Six years ago, Sir Finnian lost his heart to a mysterious young archer. Though he searched, he never learned her name until the night he shot her…on his brother’s orders. Wracked with guilt, Finnian makes protecting Lady Mykah his new mission, never guessing how difficult it will prove to be. The Guardian has more enemies than she knows, and they’re closer than she realizes.

The longer Finnian stays, the clearer the price of his vow becomes. Because the only way to win Mykah’s heart will be to break his own. And the only way to keep hers beating will be to break it altogether.

About the Author:

Hannah Currie has loved royals—both real and fictional—for as long as she can remember and has always been fascinated by their lives. They started making their way into her writing somewhere around first grade and never stopped.

While she never dreamed of being a princess for real (way too many expectations and people watching), she certainly wouldn’t say no to the gorgeous gowns, endless wardrobes, chefs, and cleaners that come with the job. A crown or two wouldn’t go astray either. Or Belle’s library. Where she’d just sit and stare at the books with a giddy smile on her face for hours.

Hannah lives with her husband and three kids in Australia, where they proudly claim Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family as their own. She is very honored to be one of the launching authors for the new WhiteCrown Publishing line with her Crown of Promise series full of faith, romance, and—of course—royals.

Jane and the Final Mystery ~ Review

Jane and the Final Mystery
Being a Jane Austen Mystery #15
By Stephanie Barron

First, I must admit this is my first Being a Jane Austen Mystery book, and unfortunately, it is also the final book in the series. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was quick and easy to get into without any previous knowledge of the series.

The book is written in the language and style of Jane Austen herself, which gives it an authentic feel. I'm always surprised how language and spelling evolve over time and yet one can easily slip into what was with little to no effort.

This book is set during the final months of Jane's life as her health fails, but when the son of a dear friend asks for help, Jane obliges, as is her nature. To see a young man destroyed when another is found dead raises her to the occasion. But the very environment and culture of Winchester College has lent itself to hazing and abuse of younger students. And when one of the most volatile of the bullies is found dead, his latest victim is accused of, if not doing the deed, of driving his tormentor to the taking of his own life. Yeah, right, blame the poor smaller kid who has no money to his name, sounds perfectly reasonable. Jane is of the same thought, though with better wording, and is determined to seek out the truth. With Jane and her nephew Edward on the case, the truth will surely come out, though it may prove a touch dangerous.

This was an enjoyable read, and seeing Jane Austen as a detective was fun. This book was most definitely able to be read as a standalone title. But since I just discovered this series at the very end, I have a new series and author to add to my TBR list. A very long list, I might add.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

The Secrets Beneath ~ Review

The Secrets Beneath
Treasures of the Earth #1
By Kimberley Woodhouse

The Secrets Beneath is a historical fiction piece set in 1870s Montana, within the Wyoming Territory. It is a time when everything discovered is truly unique and awe-inspiring. In this world, we are introduced to an intriguing cast of characters who contrast sharply with one another.

Anna Lakeman has spent years working alongside her father, a paleontologist. Working as the illustrator for his digs, Anna isn't your normal 19th-century young lady. She loves what she does and supports the field of study in the only way she can - through her drawings.  Three years ago, her heart was broken when Joshua Ziegler left.

When Joshua left to pursue his medical education, he spoke out against Anna's work on her father's digs. Returning home for a short break, Joshua can only hope to make it right with Anna or at least ask for her forgiveness. But when Anna's father falls ill, and Joshua's nephew goes missing, fate seems to be conspiring against them.

And then there is Julian Walker, considered odd by everyone and the son of Old Walker, the meanest, wealthiest man in the region. One feels for Julian Walker, his background, and the opinions of those who live nearby, well, it all adds up to a sad history. And yet, one can't blame those who know him, though "know" is inadequate when considering his limited interactions with the community.

So, let me say I really enjoyed this book. The setting was beautifully described while not bogging one down in too much detail. And then, one can feel moments of terror as Anna struggles to withstand the force that is trying to destroy her. (Yes, you need to read the book because any more info will ruin the suspense).  The characters drive this story with their varied personalities, full of depths waiting to come to life as one progresses through the book.

If you like your books to be a well-balanced blend of genres, this book will take care of that. Romance, Mystery, Suspense, Inspiration, and History all come together beautifully in this book. I was drawn in from the opening lines.

This is the first book in the Treasures of the Earth series, and it promises to be a most enlightening and enjoyable reading experience. This book is one I would highly recommend to anyone who loves historical fiction with a touch of suspense and mystery.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

in the competitive era of the Bone Wars. But after her father becomes sick and Joshua Ziegler, an old beau, returns for the summer, Anna's world is upended, and the practical, orderly life she has made for herself shatters.

Medical student Joshua Ziegler left his hometown to forget Anna, the one woman he

Garden of the Midnights ~ Review

Garden of the Midnights
By Hannah Linder

Twenty plus years ago he was threatened with the truth, a truth he wanted buried. And now he has to face what he had tried to avoid.

William Kensley has never wanted to be someplace but Rosenleigh Manor. But when accidents suddenly start befalling him he must confort the ugly truth - the accidents are no accident. Could someone be trying to kill him? But why? Believing the truth behind his unknown father could hold the key, he sets off to learn what he can.

What he learns will shatter his world.

Isabella Gresham is expected to marry well, her father has expectations for her. But Isabella has expectations as well, and giving away her heart isn't one of them. When she meets William there is something between them, something that will bring her an unexpected joy and enjoyment of life. But circumstances being what they are prevent even a thought of romance.

There is danger that stalks them both, and unless they can discover the truths long buried it may destroy them both.

This was a excellent read from Hannah Linder. This is the first book have read by her, though I will admit to have two of her other books in my TBR pile next to my bed. Guess which books are moving there way up the stack.

This book was a wonderful blend of Suspense, History, Romance, and Inspiration. Both Isabella and William have been brought up in a web of lies. Lies that when one strand is pulled free starts to unravel all around it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something new.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

gentleman William Kensley becomes aware of the danger at Rosenleigh Manor, he
pleads for the truth of his past from the only man he can trust—until that man is
murdered.

As the secrets unfold into scandal, William’s world is tipped into destitution, leaving him
penniless and alone. His only comfort is in the constant friendship and love of
Isabella Gresham. If he does not have their nonsense at the seashore, their laughter,
their reckless adventures, has he anything at all?

He should have known that would be ripped from him too. When a hidden foe arises
from their acquaintances and imperils Isabella’s life, William may be the only one willing
to risk his life to rescue her. But even if he frees Isabella from her captors, will he still
have to forsake her heart?

Christmas Bells and Wedding Vows ~ Review

Christmas Bells and Wedding Vows
A Marriage of Convenience Anthology
By Jody Hedlund, Lacy Williams,
      and Misty M. Beller

There is nothing better than a Christmas book, and Christmas Bells and Wedding Vows offers 3 stories within its pages. In each, love is not an expectation as three couples agree to marriages of convenience. But with Christmas taking center stage in each story, you know a little bit of romance will make its way into each.
Claiming the Cowgirl by Jody Hedlund is a must-read for fans of her Colorado Cowboys and her Colorado Cowgirls series. In this story Weston Oakley gets his chance at marriage when Serena Taylor decides he'd be the perfect father for her son. And with his claim that he'd be married by Christmas her need for a husband couldn't have come at a better time. But will the secrets between them destroy their chance for love?

Doctor's Snowflake Bride by Lacy Williams finds Minnie stuck in town while her intended rides out a blizzard hours away in his cabin. Meanwhile she makes a place for herself in the small town when disaster strikes. Aiding Doctor Jeb Dawson and befriending his son gives her glimpse at life she's always dreamed of but never had. No matter what the future holds this is one Christmas she'll never forget. But will she finally find a place to belong and be wanted?

Marrying the Mountain Man’s Best Friend by Misty M. Beller finds Two Stones, a Salish warrior, making a deathbed promise to his dearest friend, to marry his daughter Heidi. But marriage is the last thing Heidi wants. Not now that she is widowed and free of her late husband. But she needs protection and agrees to marry Two Stones but only for the protection it provides against the danger Virginia City provides to any and all unmarried women. But could her father's final plea actually be the life she has long desired?

These delightful Christmas tales of Historical Fiction are just what you are looking to find under your pre-Christmas TBR list. Each is a standalone novella that introduces the reader to a series by each author. Reading the previous books in the various series isn't necessary to enjoy these Christmas tales. Experience talking here as I've only read Jody Hedlund's coresponding series and enjoyed all three with no issues.

The Legacy of Longdale Manor ~ Review

The Legacy of Longdale Manor
By Carrie Turansky

When Gwen Morris makes a costly error she is sent to England's Lake District in a hope to redeem herself and get out of the public's eye. What she never expected was to find a link to her own family. With questions about her father she sets off on a journey of discovery while at Longdale Manor. But some questions are almost impossible to answer when secrets are closely guarded. But with the help of David Bradford, grandson of the owner of Longdale Manor, Gwen looks for what may be long hidden away in the rescesses of the home.

Charlotte Harper is doing what she can to see that her mother and sister are provided for. But in 1912 any meaningful employment for women is nearly impossible to find. Fortunately the Storey family has offered them a place in their home. And as Charlotte grows closer to Ian she has to deal with what she sees as a betrayal. And this betrayal will have an affect on her life and her decisions. But can all of life be judged by another's deceit? This is something that Charlotte will have to discover before she can move forward.

I love how these two story threads are woven together. The questions that both Gwen and Charlotte face are ones so many have to face at some point in life. The struggles that they face and their reactions to disappointments along the way make the journey meaningful when we get to the end. Was it worth the fight that they put forth? Or a fruitless endeavor? This is a lovely book that is worthy of its cover and one you won't want to miss!

About the Book:

Two women—a century apart—embark on a journey to healing, faith, forgiveness,
and romance.

In 2012, art historian Gwen Morris travels to England's Lake District to appraise the paintings and antiques of an old family friend, hoping to prove herself to her prestigious grandfather. While at Longdale Manor, she meets David Bradford--the owner's handsome grandson--who is desperate to save the crumbling estate by turning it into a luxury hotel. When Gwen stumbles upon a one-hundred-year-old journal and an intricately carved shepherd's staff similar to one in a photo of her parents, she's left searching for answers.

In 1912, after her father's death, Charlotte Harper uncovers a painful family secret she can only confess to her journal. She and her family travel to the Lake District to stay on a sheep farm, hoping eventually to find a home with Charlotte's grandfather at Longdale Manor, but old wounds and bitter regrets make it a difficult challenge. As Charlotte grows closer to shepherd Ian Storey and rebuilds her shattered faith, she must decide whether she will ever trust in love again.

Rocky Mountain Rendezvous ~ Review

Rocky Mountain Rendezvous
Sisters of the Rockies #1
By Misty M. Beller

The Collins sisters are on a journey to fulfill a promise made to their dying father. He made a seemingly impossible request - return a special set of blue beads to Steps Right, a Piegan Blackfoot woman who saved his life years ago.

But traveling alone and unchaperoned isn't the safest, not when their destination is a trapper rendezvous in the Rocky Mountains and women, specifically white women, are scarce.

Juniper and her sisters are grateful for the assistance Riley Turner offers them - both protection and in looking for Steps Right. But finding a woman among so many camps proves more difficult than they had anticipated. Riley's knowledge soon proves invaluable. But a deathbed promise deserves their best efforts, and the one thing the sisters all know is they are determined to keep it.

Juniper is surprised by just how free she feels in this rough land, and she isn't the only Collins sister to feel this way. But even more surprising is the connection she feels towards Riley. With plans to return to Virgina, Juniper can't allow her heart to derail the plans she and her sisters have made.

This is was an enjoyable read that had some moments of danger. The search for Steps Right really made the story resonate for me. And the way the book ended. I can't wait for the next one. I really connected with Juniper and could appreciate her feeling of freedom. All four of the Collin sisters have a great relationship that is to be envied, and I hope they all get their own story, especially Lorelei.

 About the book:

In 1837, Juniper Collins and her sisters are shocked by their father's deathbed request for them to return a special set of beads to a Piegan Blackfoot woman he credits with saving his life during his travels West. Together, the sisters set out for the trapper rendezvous to find the woman, but their mission turns more daunting when they come upon the mass of men and lodges spread out in the Green River Valley.

Riley Turner came West to find peace and quiet and live off the land, but when four unprotected women arrive at the rendezvous, he feels compelled to help them and is more fascinated by Juniper than any other woman he's known.

As their search brings only empty leads and dead ends, the sisters must decide whether to return East or stay in the mountains to continue looking--and that's if the mystery woman is even still alive. Is the risk to honor their father's last request worth the danger they find at every turn?
