To Win a Prince ~ Review

To Win a Prince
By Toni Shiloh

This is a follow-up/sequel to Toni Shilo's In Search of A Prince, and it is not to be missed. I loved getting a chance to get to know Bree's BFF better. Iris Blakely never thought her trip to Oloro Ilé would lead to a life-changing event for her too. But it did, and now she is the owner of a locally sourced fashion design business. But it isn't just any business - nope, the goal is to help improve the lives of the local women by offering them steady employment that would help them better their lives and those of their families.

But being an American in Oloro Ilé, starting a business comes with a few strings attached, and that includes allowing the man who was involved in the plot against Bree and her rule to do community service hours under her watchful eye. Ekon Diallo was an instant crush as far as Iris was concerned, and when he betrayed Bree, Iris's crush was a bit tarnished. But Ekon has the necessary skills and knowledge that Iris needs to succeed.

Ekon was raised to be a prince, and his fall has brought him to a new reality. Not only has he lost everything, but he has also fallen beneath his father's notice. He has no one to call on for help; he has absolutely no domestic skills and an ego that won't quit. You can already tell his time working for Iris will be interesting.

To Win a Prince is a story of discovery. Who is a person when they've lost everything that gave them worth in the eyes of the world? What gives a person their identity? Is it rank? Family name? Wealth? Or is it something deeper? TWAP is a spiritual discovery - sometimes, to discover our true selves and our place in God's eyes, we need to be brought to our lowest moments.

I highly recommend this book. It is well worth the time spent reading it. As with In Search of a Prince, I read the paperback edition while listening to the audio version. It was interesting to hear the various words pronounced and to get a feel for how Iris, her family, and Ekon all talked (accents can totally change how you feel and experience a character).  You can enjoy this book as a standalone, but I think the previous book is necessary to fully grasp the backstory.

The audiobook is narrated by Tamika Katon-Donegal and has a runtime of 13 hours and 22 minutes. The presentation is excellent, and the characters are distinguishable from one another during the narrator's reading (always a BIG plus, in my opinion).

And if you need another reason to add this book to your personal library - just look at the cover - it is gorgeous. Who wouldn't want to see this sitting there asking you to pick it up?

I was provided a copy of this book (in paperback form) with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
As a fashion aficionado and best friend of the queen of the African island country Oloro Ilé, Iris Blakely dreams of using her talent to start a business to help citizens in impoverished areas. But when she discovers that Ekon Diallo will be her business consultant, the battle between her desires and reality begins.

Ekon Diallo has lost everything: his princely title, his material possessions, his friends, and the respect of his countrymen. To pay for his actions against Oloro Ilé, he's forced to assist the charismatic Iris Blakely--but he can't allow his heart to distract him from regaining his status.

As Iris strives to get her business off the ground while keeping her heart intact, will her dreams of "happily ever after," survive the challenges she faces?

Love, Faith, and Tender Kisses ~ Review

Love, Faith, and Tender Kisses
By Lisa Renee, Milla Holt, Meredith Resce,
Lorana Hoopes, Narelle Atkins, Carolyn Miller,
  and Autumn Macarthur

Love, Faith, and Tender Kisses is a collection of seven novellas that offer a mix of contemporary romance reads.

In the Fake Engagement Mistake, we are offered a fake romance that may not be as fake as it was supposed to be. Becca just wants her parents to let her make her own decisions about her life and asks her brother's best friend Paul to be her fake boyfriend/fiancee. There is just one little thing she doesn't know Paul has always had a crush on her and he isn't about to let this chance at something more get away from him.  This a sweet story with an ending that you just have to read.

In the Last Flight Home Macey has just had her hopes of romance blow up and now she finds herself on a nine-hour flight home to England with the fiancee she broke up with five years ago. Talk about awkward. Caleb's heart was broken when Macey ended things between them and to be on a flight with her couldn't have been more unexpected. Can the issue that tore them apart be breached or will Macey stubbornly hold onto her anger. Or will Caleb's reasoning finally make sense to Macey? Is this a second chance at romance or just additional heartbreak?

In Falling for Maddie Grace an on-the-field collision knocks umpire Maddie Grace out and brings her back into the life of one of her father's former players. Zac has had no problem avoiding romance and holding true to his morals but when he knocks out Maddie Grace everything is about to get muddled up. Before Maddie had always been just one of the guys and coach Jimmy's daughter but now that he's injured her and she needs his assistance he starts to see her differently. Could they have something more and not become just another sensational-rumor-filled headline?

In The Billionaire's Impromptu Bet a bet between "friends" to get a random guy to propose within a month takes an unexpected turn when entitled Brie Carter is given an ultimatum by her father. Get a job or get married within a month or you are on your own. SWAT Officer Jesse Calhoun isn't impressed by spoiled little rich girl Brie. But when Brie gets a job at the local coffee place and starts spending time with him he realizes he may have misjudged her. But with a secret bet between them do they even have a chance of a happily ever after?

In His Perfect Catch Mia Radcliffe takes an extended break from her life in Sydney, hiding out in Sapphire Bay to avoid the social fallout of her ex's fall from everything amid a political scandal. What she never expected was to connect with her cousins' next door neighbor. Pete McCall has been flipping properties and has bought a beach house in need of a major over-all but he has a promise to keep where Mia is concerned. But keep an eye out for Mia isn't a problem as the two connect over missing keys and coffee. But when their life plans seemingly lead them in opposite directions is there hope for what might be? Or has their chance at romance ended before it truly has a chance to start?

Originally Yours is set in Wisconsin just as Christmas break is getting ready to start. Gloria has been planning on returning to her family home in Georgia when a winter storm disrupts her plans. But Gloria has a personality that finds her always in an upbeat helpful frame of mind. But missing Christmas with her family brings to light some of her past issues and may be behind her avoidance of any romance in her life. Josiah doesn't have time for romance - he has a plan and it is set in stone. Unfortunately for him he didn't check with God first. This Christmas just might find two people not looking for romance with an unexpected gift - but it may take a nudge or two from their friends to see the possibilities.

In Imperfectly Proverbs 31 we meet Daniel who is forced into investigating a blogger Samantha (Sam) who seems too good to be true. Sam feels that she has to put a perfect persona out there, that she needs to be the woman of Proverbs 31 (don't we all at times). But Daniel is against any hint of untruth and sets up a potentially tense situation for the two of them.

Overall this is a great collection of novellas and a perfect introduction to seven distinct authors. Looking for clean reads and romance with a faith based foundation? Well. you will want to pick up this set. It is perfect for when you want to enjoy a quick story (think at the most  two or three hours of book relaxation per story).

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

In Search of a Prince ~ Review

In Search of a Prince
By Toni Shiloh

Brielle Bayo always thought she was your average American. Her mother raised her as a single parent following her father's death, all while putting herself through medical school. Impressive! Right?

But now the truth is about to come out. Brielle's mother has been keeping a secret from her for 25 years! Not only did her father have a family BUT they are the ruling family of an island nation in Africa. Worse her grandfather is dying and Brielle has just months left to connect with what was denied her all these years. But the biggest shocker of them all is that she, Brielle Bayo middle-grade civics teacher, is next in the line to the throne!

Cue a major time-out to wrap her mind around the mere possibility if not the fact that she is in line to be queen.

But does she want to be queen? She has to make a decision and to do so she must visit Ọlọrọ Ilé, Africa, and get to know the people, the culture, the language, and the history.  No small task for her summer break.  And if she accepts the future before her, she must marry before she can assume the throne.

In Search of a Prince is a story of faith and trust. Brielle spends time in prayer, seeking the Lord's will. This is one choice that she doesn't want to make on her own. While dealing with the shock of learning who she is, Bri is also dealing with her feelings of betrayal at her mother's silence for 25 years. I can't even begin to imagine how I would be handling such a situation.

When all of this first unfolds Bri wonders if she is about to find herself in a Princess Diary situation. I have not read the books but I did see the movies and in no way is this a redo.  There is a depth to the characters as they navigate and adapt to their changing world.

I enjoyed this in both the print version and the audio. The audiobook is excellent. I like how Tamika Katon-Donegal narrates the book. The different characters are identifiable and I really appreciate the pronunciations of the names and places in Ọlọrọ Ilé so I did not have to struggle through it and probably mangle it thoroughly.  I can't say I have a preference for one over the other - audio with the pronunciations while the print version has the spelled-out words. Both together is the ideal in my opinion but this is one book you don't want to miss no matter how you enjoy it.

I was provided a complimentary copy of the print book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Brielle Adebayo is fully content teaching at a New York City public school and taking annual summer vacations with her mother to Martha's Vineyard. But everything changes when her mom drops the mother of all bombshells--Brielle is a princess in the kingdom of Ọlọrọ Ilé, Africa, and she must immediately assume her royal position, since the health of her grandfather, King Tiwa Jimoh Adebayo, is failing.

Distraught by her mother's betrayal, Brielle is further left spinning when the Ọlọrọ Ilé Royal Council brings up an old edict that states she must marry before assuming the throne or the crown will be passed to another. Uncertain who to choose from the council's list of bachelors, she struggles with the decision along with the weight of her new role in a new country. With her world totally shaken, she must take a chance on love and brave the perils a wrong decision may bring.

Hidden Danger
Hidden Danger
Guardians Unleashed #1
By Jerusha Agen

Cora Isaksson lives with her guilt of having failed her brother. If she can prevent any other family from going through the pain of losing someone to the lure of addiction she'll do all she can. With Jana, her drug-detecting K-9, she hopes to get the trafficking through the local high school and airport reduced if not stopped. But when her job with the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency puts her in the crosshairs of the cartel she'll have to put her faith in God.

DEA Special Agent Kent Thomson has made it his life's work to destroy the cartel that destroyed his life. When Cora and Jana manage to in the middle of his case he is more than a little annoyed when he is ordered to work with her. But there is something about Cora that just gets through to people and she may be his way into the cartel.

As Kent and Cora work towards their mutual goal they are both placed in situations that force them to revisit their pasts and their relationships with their brothers.

As the danger increases the closer they get to their goal, they'll have to rely on all their skills to stay alive and ahead of the cartel.

This is the first book in the Guardians Unleashed series and if you love books that pair K-9 with fighters of justice you will love this book. This is a Romantic Suspense that is obviously Christian as the main character Cora makes no pretense to hide her faith or her belief. What some view as a weakness Cora views as her greatest strength. She has empathy and tries to help those she is tracking down make a step in the opposite direction, to turn over a new leaf. Kent tries to quell any and all emotions that could be viewed as soft and relationships- friendship a vulnerability he needs to avoid at all costs. Two more different people couldn't make for a more interesting partnership in the war on drugs. It was interesting to see how they both reacted in the same situations. I am looking forward to the next book to see what this series has in store for the rest of Phoenix's members. Fans of Love Inspired Suspense will love this book, this series.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations other than I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed were my own.

Blessed ~ Review

The Blessed
The Gifted #3
by Lisa T. Bergren

The Gifted are still being hunted while seeking to recover Hasani. With their path being manipulated the Gifted were in need of allies but determining who could be trusted was not easy, because, as Daria had discovered "all men who wielded power were dangerous, in some measure." A truth she knew all too well.

As their enemy moves against them the Gifted grow stronger as they are doing the work of the Lord. But standing firm is not always easy in the face of evil and its insidious methods. But through it all faith is the Gifted's greatest weapon in their fight against the enemy.

This is the third and final book in The Gifted series. Each book must be read in order as each book builds on what came before. Set during the Middle Ages (mid 1300s) miracles and healings are an important focus of ones faith - it is interesting to see how this all plays out throughout this series. Daria's gifts are both feared and coveted by those in power making her and those with her a threat. This is not a quick read nor an easy one because of the darkness seeking to destroy the light but this is a good read. Highly recommended for those who are looking for fiction with a spiritual aspect to it.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Written in Ink ~ Review

Written in Ink
The Rose Tattoo trilogy#2
By Sara Davison

He's given fifteen years of his life, of his love to Renee Dawson when she suddenly calls an end to everything. His hopes and dreams of a forever with her are shattered. She claims that Cash is a distraction she doesn't need in the pursuit of her career, but the truth is something that will shatter him even more.

Renee has spent her life trying to prove she isn't the failure her father has always made her feel like. She has never had a moment of doubt about Cash McCall's love but she knows when he learns the truth his feelings will change. But the decision is hers alone to make and make it she will.

But Renee's decision leads directly her into the path of extremists who will do whatever it takes to silence any and all who could stand in the way of their goals. After all, what's one more death when compared to the millions of innocents who have paid the price.

Now I will admit that this book covered several topics I wasn't expecting from the book description - abortion, pro-life extremists, and premarital sex. Now the topics were presented in a sensitive and thoughtful manner as various characters deal with these issues from differing perspectives. Though not what I was expecting and possibly not one I would have picked up if I had known, it was well written. The characters came across as believable and as people, one could have day-to-day interactions with. This is the second book in the Rose Tattoo Trilogy and it was able to be read as a standalone book. I have not read the previous book and other than some references to events that may have occurred in that book it was easy to follow the story from beginning to end. Overall an excellent and well-presented book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - All thoughts expressed are my own.

Right Cross ~ Review

Right Cross
A Shepherd Suspense Novel #3
By Andrew Huff

Former CIA agent and ex-pastor John Cross finds himself on the wrong side of the law. Imprisoned in the worst prison in England and stuck between two rival prison gangs - life couldn't get much bleaker. But not everything is as it appears as his on pause girlfriend Christine Lewis soon discovers.

Cyberterrorists have a plan in place and it will disrupt the world as we now know it (but isn't that always the case with those who are out to topple world governments and economic markets). It is a race across international borders and against time to stop these cyber masterminds who are master manipulators before they go too far and can't be stopped.

Right Cross is the third book in the Shepherd Suspense series and it is unputdownable reading. There are more than a few unexpected twists that keep the reader's suspense level at high. And a word of advice, read books 1 and 2 first, it's not that you won't enjoy this book without reading them first just that you'll better understand it with the backstory firmly in your mind. Excellent reading that you don't want to miss. And there just might be a fairly happy ending to be had if they can all survive what is coming.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Heart-pounding action meets spiritual choices in this thrilling finale to John Cross's saga

First he left the CIA. Then he left pastoral ministry. Now John Cross has been imprisoned in one of Great Britain's most infamous prisons. Has he reached the end of his rope? Or is this another move in a dangerous spy game?

Christine Lewis, United News Network's rising star television anchor, is determined to find out. But in her pursuit of answers, Christine finds herself at the center of a cyberterrorist plot to alter the balance of power in the world. From the English coastline to the Rocky Mountains, John must partner with the CIA and MI6 in a race against the clock to stop the threat of nuclear war and save the lives of everyone he holds dear.

The concluding story in the Shepherd Suspense trilogy is a globe-trotting, action-packed adventure with threads of biblical truth woven in. Fans of high-octane thrillers will be on the edge of their seats with Right Cross.

Castle of Refuge ~ Review with Giveaway

C
astle of Refuge
A Dericott Tale#2
By Melanie Dickerson

Four years ago Audrey's hopes were dashed, leaving her scarred for life following an incident with Maris, her older sister. No longer of value in her father's estimate all thoughts of a marriage alliance with the future Lord Dericott are ended before beginning. With Maris's imminent return and a unwanted marriage offer Audrey does the only thing she can - she flees the only home she has ever known.

Life as the daughter of a viscount has left Audrey ill prepared to face the life she suddenly finds herself in. And soon she finds herself in desperate need but nowhere to turn for help and at the mercy of strangers.

Edwin has assumed the role of Lord Endicott, but the injury he sustained protecting his family has left its mark. Feeling he is no longer a whole man, Edwin struggles to regain some of what he has lost. His future appears bleak but for the kindness he can extend his tenants. When a sick young woman is found - he offers her the safety and protection that his title and home can provide.

Castle of Refuge is a story of healing and seeing beyond the outer physical appearance to the true-self of a person. Now this story is not without its dramatic, page-turning moments, of which there are several. How often do we hide behind what we see in the mirror - thinking this reflection is a true representation of what lies beneath the surface? Both Audrey and Edwin grow through this story learning to not limit themselves by perceptions but rather to push forward to test themselves to grow.

This is the second book in the Dericott Tales series and it can be enjoyed without the backstory of book one Court of Swans. Having that information, which lets you understand more of Edwin is helpful but you can go back and read it later, which believe me you will want to do. Overall I highly recommend this book to both teen and adult readers.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - All thoughts expressed are my own.

Though Maris was sent away, twenty-year-old Audrey is still suffering the scars of her sister’s cruelty. When her father announces his plans to marry off his damaged daughter and bring Maris home, Audrey decides to flee in search of her true destiny.

However, life outside her home is dangerous, and she soon finds herself attacked, sick, and in desperate need of help. She is taken in at Dericott Castle to be nursed back to health. While there, she decides to keep her identity a secret and work as a servant in the castle. But she doesn’t count on falling in love with the young and handsome Lord Dericott, who lost his arm several months earlier and bears scars of his own.

Meanwhile, Edwin—Lord Dericott—is curious about the new, well-educated servant’s identity. All he knows is that he’s quickly becoming smitten with her. When the man Audrey’s father wanted her to marry comes looking for her, she and Edwin must make life-changing decisions about what to believe and whether or not love is truly worth trusting.

Begotten
The Gifted #1
By Lisa T. Bergren

A forbidden scripture long believed destroyed has been hidden for hundreds of years. The illuminations reveal something that those who have now come together must figure out - a gathering of the Gifted.

The Gifted are to make known God's great love for all people. Known through the gifts that each has been given. "The power of Christ within."  And they have much to fear as what they do is not ordained by the Church and those in power fear that change will be a threat to the power they wield.

Are the Gifted truly of God or are they a threat to the Church? Soon the Gifted find themselves in a battle - a battle of the spiritual and their very lives are in danger as they prove to be a threat to Lord of Darkness and those who lust after the empty promises of power and wealth.

Begotten is the first book in The Gifted series and it most definitely leaves the reader wanting to know what comes next. Those who fans of the work of Frank Peretti, James Rubart, Ted Dekker, and Tosca Lee should enjoy reading Begotten. This book is set in the Middle Ages in the general vicinity of Rome and is an era and place I have not read too many books in. Altogether I would say this was a good read and I'd recommend it.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

A Tapestry of LightA Tapestry of Light
By Kimberly Duffy

Ottilie Russell is caught between two worlds accepted by neither and rejected by both. Her mixed heritage is held in contempt and viewed with suspicion - the British reject her due to her clearly Indian heritage and the Indians disdaining her British ties as a betrayal of who she could have been. She is clearly Indian but too British to be accepted by those she calls neighbors.

She has lost the joy and peace that life once offered. Losing her parents, brother, and sister has left her in fear and doubt. Fear that she will lose what little family she has left and in doubt that God is indeed loving and concerned for her.

Using her skills as a beetle-wing embroiderer she manages to eke out a living that provides for the barest needs of her little brother Thaddeus and her grandmother. But life is anything but easy as she pushes herself to fulfill the work in the attempt to gain more.

But she is adrift - when Everett Scott shows up claiming that he has been sent to bring Thaddeus back to England. But Ottilie cannot give up her brother her last reminder of her parents and their love. But Thaddeus has inherited a title and though he is only 6 he has a duty to fulfill. In the process of trying to convince Ottilie that Thaddeus's life will vastly improve if he is permitted to leave, Everett and Ottilie form a friendship of sorts. A friendship that has the potential becoming something more.

When yet another tragedy strikes Ottilie agrees to Thaddeus's removal from India on the condition that she goes with him. As Ottilie faces the prospect of a new world so different from the one she's always known she finds herself adrift. The family that she prayed would accept her is shocked at her foreign appearance and ways. She is expected to reject the ties that bind her to England so as to not upset societal expectations and ruin her brother's future. Worse she faces betrayal once again from a man in whom she has placed her truth. Can she ever find a place to belong and find the answers she so desperately seeks?

A Tapestry of Light is a journey of faith and discovery. Who is God? Throughout Ottilie and various other characters find themselves in doubt as to who God truly is and what role, if any, His plays in their life? Is He loving? A cruel tyrant? An indifferent deity who demands everything? These are the answers that drive the story as much as the prejudices that drive Ottilie to make choices that set her life on an altogether different path she never anticipated following. These are truths that all readers can take to heart as something to ponder. This book takes the reader on a journey through heartbreak, sorrow, desolation, and joy. It is also a look at the world under British rule and it is disheartening that the prejudices that were are still such a very real part of life today. Ethnic and class snobbery is not unique to any particular era or people and yet it is equally painful and destructive. Kimberly Duffy brings Ottilie Russell life with all her complexities, fears, hopes, and dreams. This is the first work of Kimberly Duffy that I have had the pleasure of reading and I can assure you that it will not be the last and I highly recommend her work if you are looking for something that entertains while providing a multifaceted depth.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Calcutta, 1886.

Ottilie Russell is adrift between two cultures, British and Indian, belonging to both and neither. In order to support her little brother, Thaddeus, and her grandmother, she relies upon her skills in beetle-wing embroidery that have been passed down to her through generations of Indian women.

When a stranger appears with the news that Thaddeus is now Baron Sunderson and must travel to England to take his place as a nobleman, Ottilie is shattered by the secrets that come to light. Despite her growing friendship with Everett Scott, friend to Ottilie's English grandmother and aunt, she refuses to give up her brother. Then tragedy strikes, and she is forced to make a decision that will take Thaddeus far from death and herself far from home.

But betrayal and loss lurk in England, too, and soon Ottilie must fight to ensure Thaddeus doesn't forget who he is, as well as find a way to stitch a place for herself in this foreign land.
