A Strike to the Heart Strike to the Heart #1 By Danielle Grandinetti
Lily Moore isn't like most young women, she insists on living on her, trains hunting dogs, and is (gasp) unmarried. In 1933, Eagle, Wisconsin, Lily and her twin brother Joey, are considered troublesome, doing things their way and not falling into the expected mold.
But when Lily goes missing, the Craft Agency is tasked with finding her. But things go very wrong before Lily's rescue is carried out by Miles Wright. As Miles attempts to keep Lily safe he is faced with his own challenges, including the traitorous leanings of his heart where Lily is concerned.
With a third dairy strike becoming more likely each day, Lily and Miles face greater danger. But where the danger is coming from remains as elusive as does the reason why.
A Strike to the Heart is the first book in the Strike to the Heart series and is the second work in the series - the first being To Stand in the Breach, which is the series prequel novella. Where the novella focused on Joey Moore and Katy Wells, this book focuses on Lily and Miles. Joey and Katy are in this book as supporting characters, or in Joey's case, an antagonist. I find the whole dairy situation interesting - the Depression is still having an effect on the country and farmers have been hit hard - do you strike to demand better compensation and dump what milk you have getting no compensation or do you sell what you have for a mere pittance and stay trapped in the cycle? This is the situation that sets the entire story in motion and it is a dilemma that I can honestly say would be hard to weigh in on.
I have to say I really like this series. The characters are relatable and I have to say I really like Lily and can understand why she has taken the path she has. Lily is misunderstood and it's sad that her family is so clueless about her and what makes her who she is.
Fans of Depression Era Historical Fiction will love this book. If you want to travel the country through books and make a stop in each state here is your Wisconsin destination. This would also be a great book club reading selection, in my opinion.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
