An Uncommon Courtship ~ Review

An Uncommon Courtship
Hawthorne House #3
By Kristi Ann Hunter

Lord Trent Hawthorne has seen both his sisters married and has plans to marry for love himself - someday. But someday has come and he won't be marrying for love - in fact he has barely ever met the woman he is now to call wife. But when an accident strands them together unchaperoned he feels it is only honorable to offer to wed Lady Adelaide Bell saving her reputation from scandal.

But Trent hasn't the slightest idea of how to be married with his father's death years ago and he isn't sure whom he can ask for advice. His older brother Griffin has managed to avoid the traps society has set for him so he can't turn to him for advice.

Determined to come up with a plan Trent determines to court his wife after they are married - a most unusual situation and one that may create problems of its own. Can Trent's plan bring him the marriage he thought he would have or will it be a trial for the rest of his life.

And what about Adelaide - what are her feelings about the situation she now finds herself in. Adelaide has never had a London season always left behind when her family took part in the festivities of the season. Adelaide was forever second sister and her mother let her know this always through her neglect and inattention. And her marriage to the younger brother of the Duke of Riverton is about to bring her the not so welcome attention of her mother and London society.

An Uncommon Courtship is about to begin and the outcome is uncertain, though for better or worse Trent and Adelaide are married... But will there be commonality or love?

This is the third book Hawthorn House series and to be honest this was my least favorite book in the series (a little too much marriage interaction for my reading comfort level). But the basic story was very good as one gets to learn more about Trent and his greatest fear - becoming duke and losing his brother just as he lost his father. I like Lady Adelaide she is an admirable person as she makes her way through her new situation and life.

The previous books would be okay for most mid teens to read but this one would be more suitable for older teens or young adults - as a teen this would not have been a book on my approved list - but I'm still a big fan of G movies (just saying). I'd say this would be a PG or low PG-13 if it was a movie.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a review positive or otherwise. All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Life for Lady Adelaide Bell was easier if she hid in her older sister's shadow--which worked until her sister got married. Even with the pressure of her socially ambitious mother, the last thing she expected was a marriage of convenience to save her previously spotless reputation.

Lord Trent Hawthorne couldn't be happier that he is not the duke in the family. He's free to manage his small estate and take his time discovering the life he wants to lead, which includes grand plans of wooing and falling in love with the woman of his choice. When he finds himself honor bound to marry a woman he doesn't know, his dream of a marriage like his parents' seems lost forever.

Already starting their marriage on shaky ground, can Adelaide and Trent's relationship survive the pressures of London society?

Maybe It's You ~ Review with Author Q and A

Maybe It's You
Crisis Team #3
By Candace Calvert

Nurse Sloane Ferrell thought she'd finally left her past behind just as she'd left her last name Wilder behind when she left San Diego from LA. The only problem with leaving the past behind the memories stay with you - and Sloane has some really bad ones.

Sloane is determined to be a new person - she's avoiding alcohol, after work socializing, and anything to draw attention to herself. But when she sees a young woman in trouble she's determined to help her, bringing her to the attention of LA Hope's assistant director of PR Micah Prescott.

Convinced that Sloane is the possible face of compassion that the hospital needs to portray Micah makes an effort to get to know the private and passionate person who puts patient well-being above everything -- even her own comfort.

But when the past comes knocking Sloane finds herself at a crossroads does she give up all she has gained in LA and run once more or does she stay where she is and fight to keep her new life?  But she carefully concealed secret is about to become known and it could cost her everything - including her chance at real love.

This is the third book in the Crisis Team series, the second in which Sloane is in. The difference in Sloane from Step by Step to Maybe It's You is interesting to observe.  This is a story of second chances and forgiveness. Sloane's crisis brings to light how one's forgiveness is based on one's own prejudices - and true forgiveness can't be enjoyed until we have extended it to another.

This is a series that should be read in order, especially the last two books. The books are each set in a different location but there is a character that carries over from one book to the other and that is Sloane along with her cat Marty in these two books.

And a special added bonus was Gibbs and McGee two adorable doxies - Gotta love the doxies! My 13 agree it was the highlight of the book.

Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary review copy of this book with no expectation of a review positive or otherwise. All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:
ER nurse Sloane Ferrell escaped her risky past—new name, zip code, job, and a fresh start. She’s finally safe, if she avoids a paper trail and doesn’t let people get too close. Like the hospital’s too-smooth marketing man with his relentless campaign to plaster one “lucky” employee’s face on freeway billboards.

Micah Prescott’s goal is to improve the Hope hospital image, but his role as a volunteer crisis responder is closer to his heart. The selfless work helps fill a void in his life left by family tragedy. So does a tentative new relationship with the compassionate, beautiful, and elusive Sloane Ferrell.

Then a string of brutal crimes makes headlines, summons responders . . . and exposes disturbing details of Sloane’s past.

Can hope spring from crisis?

Q and A with Candace Calvert
Candace Calvert is a former ER nurse and author of the Mercy Hospital, Grace Medical, and Crisis Team series. Her medical dramas offer readers a chance to “scrub in” on the exciting world of emergency medicine. Wife, mother, and very proud grandmother, Candace makes her home in northern California. Please visit her website at candacecalvert.com.

1. Maybe It’s You is the third installment in your latest trilogy, the Crisis Team series. What is the background on this series?
The Crisis Team series features the selfless and compassionate work of volunteer community chaplains—true heroes, in my opinion. The stories are set in my native California, this one in the “City of Angels,” Los Angeles.

2. How do you expect this series to resonate with your audience? What are you most excited for your readers to experience through reading these novels?
I love that my readers agree crisis responders are very special heroes. Because these selfless men and women are volunteers, it’s fun to show how their day jobs differ from what they encounter when they pull on those volunteer jackets. The hero of Maybe It’s You is the hospital’s public relations guy: coat, tie, media-speak, very different. As with all of my series, the Crisis Team stories are hospital based. Readers will feel as if they’ve been dropped into the adrenaline-infused action of the ER, experience team camaraderie, taste that day-old coffee—and glimpse the good hearts behind the stethoscopes and badges.

3. Crisis teams are becoming increasingly vital and active in the world today. How would you describe their role, and how can we learn more?
Crisis responders are trained to assist survivors of tragedy, whether it be from a major disaster (weather-related catastrophes, fires, bombings, mass shootings, etc.) or of a more personal nature like the sudden death of a loved one from a heart attack, accident, suicide, homicide, sudden infant death, or other unexpected cause. These volunteers work alongside other community service personnel (fire, police, rescue) offering support, a compassionate ear, and resources to folks trying to cope in the wake of an incident that will forever change their lives. In creating my stories, I’m grateful for the assistance of U.S. Crisis Care.
Here is a link: U.S. Crisis Care

4. As a former ER nurse who has had crisis chaplain training, what has been your most rewarding or memorable experience in the field?
In my role as a CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management) peer counselor, I was part of a team that ministered to fellow medical team members affected by work-related tragedy. We responded to (and conducted debriefings for) hospital staff after situations involving infant and child death, mass casualties, personal assault, and accidental death (or suicide) of fellow team members. One of the more heartbreaking situations I dealt with involved a hospital ER team caring for a critically injured youngster—who was the child of their favorite trauma surgeon.

5. What was your inspiration for Maybe It’s You and the main characters, Sloane and Micah? Interestingly, I never intended to feature Sloane Ferrell as the heroine of Maybe It’s You. In Step by Step, she is the nemesis teammate to the story’s heroine. She’s cynical, troubled, and dare we say unlikable? Probably. And rather mysterious, too—for very good reason. As an author, crawling inside Sloane’s head was a challenge. It raised more questions than answers. I suddenly needed to know why she was the way she was. And what it might take to change that. As this third story opens, Sloane has a new name, new zip code, new job, and a life-and death need to keep a low profile. But the opening scene puts our reluctant heroine in the media spotlight and at serious odds with Micah Prescott, the hospital’s equally determined PR man.

6. What lessons or truths will your readers find in the pages of this novel?
The unifying message in Maybe It’s You is one of forgiveness and healing, brokenness and worth—that no matter our mistakes, we are loved by God. Saved by grace.

7. As an author, what did you particularly enjoy about crafting this story?
I have been known to randomly invite readers into my stories—as characters. It was especially fun, this time, to feature the husband of one of my readers as hospital worker/handyman Jerry Rhodes; from what I’d learned of him on Facebook, he seemed a perfect match. My reader and I had a great time getting the details right, and in the end, I also “borrowed” her adorable doxies, Gibbs and McGee, her dear, elderly mama—and then I invited this generous reader to make a cameo appearance of her own. I think you’ll agree they were a great addition to the story.

8. What are some of the unique challenges of writing contemporary romance in a medical setting?
I think the challenge of the medical aspect is to provide realistic (and accurate) medical detail without talking over the heads of readers, but not talking down to them either. Because of the popularity of medical TV drama and the opportunity for people to google their way into medical jargon, symptomology, and treatment adjuncts, readers are far more savvy these days. I try my best to sort of parachute my readers into the medical scenes, allowing them to feel as if they are part of the team. As far as the romance aspect goes, while it’s true that teammates working in life-and-death situations often develop strong (and sometimes romantic) bonds, I can guarantee there are no TV-type trysts going on in hospital storage rooms!

9. Have you received any feedback from your fans on the Crisis Team series? How are they responding?
The response (I’m grateful) has been very positive; readers love these compassionate crisis responders. And of course, I’m so honored that Booklist chose this series’ first story, By Your Side, as a Top 10 Inspirational Book of 2015.

10. What is the best advice or encouragement you have received either personally or professionally?
I often receive e-mails (and even handwritten letters) from my readers. They are always a blessing. One that particularly stands out was a note from a young woman after her Alabama town was devastated by a tornado. She wrote from a shelter, exhausted, after finally getting her child to sleep. She’d picked up one of my books for a few moments of escape—and found unexpected comfort, hope. Her words, in part: “During this time of chaos and confusion . . . Thank you for providing shelter in my storm.” No better encouragement for any author.

11. What are you most proud of in your writing career?
I feel really good that I’m a trailblazer when it comes to medical romance in Christian fiction—I love being called the author of “medical hope opera.” That my long years as a nurse are now the basis for stories that touch readers’ hearts, offer hope, and perhaps even healing, seems so right, God’s plan, for sure. I’m definitely proud of my publishing team—Tyndale House is beyond awesome.

12. What are some future projects you’re working on?
After completing these three books (and now three medical fiction series), I’m currently enjoying some R and R: gardening, traveling with my husband, and volunteering in our granddaughters’ classrooms. I’m a “Sight Word Buster,” a program that boosts reading skills. An author shaping new readers—how cool is that?

The Kill Fee ~ Review

The Kill Fee
Poppy Denby Investigates #2
By Fiona Veitch Smith

A missing Fabergé Egg, a shot guard, a couple of murders, an attempted murder, and a world teetering on the on the cusp of revolution.  Poppy Denby has stumbled into yet another mystery that could leave her in danger. What's an employee of The Daily Globe to do but try to make a name for both herself and the paper.

But when the official police investigation could implicate an employee of the paper - suddenly being in the middle of the story doesn't look so appealing.  And the investigation has the potential to become an international scandal with England's close ties to the exiled Romanov Royals. Could the stolen Fabergé Egg be the key to the entire mystery - one that has Russians on both sides of the Revolution claiming?

But there is a far more sinister plot that could cost Poppy and those closest to her their very lives unless they learn the rules to political intrigue soon. Could the paper have the proof as to the whom the guilty party is? And can they save their lives by offering a kill fee for the very story that all are dying to hear...

Poppy Denby is a resourceful young woman who is trying to find her place in a world that is changing. The daughter of a minister and the niece of a suffragette - 1920's London is just the place to discover who she is. But does she want to embrace the "freedoms" so many are claiming or will she hold to the standards that she was raised with?

With a multiple of suspects this is a who-dun-it that will keep the reader guessing. I liked the back and forth aspect that took the reader to Russia in 1917 and then London in 1920 as the mystery and key characters are slowly revealed. This is a book that fans of historical fiction will enjoy especially those who enjoy the carefree years between the wars when people were trying to forget the turmoil that they had just experienced.

I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher through Kregel Blog Tours with no expectations of a review positive or otherwise. All expressed opinions are my own.

About the Book:

Poppy Denby, arts and entertainment editor at the Daily Globe, covers an exhibition of Russian art, hosted by White Russian refugees, including members of the surviving exiled Romanov royal family. There is an armed robbery, a guard is shot, and the largest Fabergé egg in the collection is stolen. While the egg itself is valuable, the secrets it contains within are priceless--secrets that could threaten major political powers.
Suspects are aplenty, including the former keeper of the Fabergé egg, a Russian princess named Selena Romanova Yusopova. The interim Bolshevik Russian ambassador, Vasili Safin, inserts himself into the investigation, as he believes the egg--and the other treasures--should all be restored to the Russian people.
Poppy, her editor, Rollo, press photographer Daniel, and the other staff of the Globe are delighted to be once again in the middle of a sensational story. But soon the investigation takes a dark turn when another body is found and an employee of the newspaper becomes a suspect. The race is on to find both the key and the egg--can they be found before the killer strikes again?

Of Stillness and Storm ~ Review

Of Stillness and Storm
By Michèle Phoenix

Lauren's one goal in life was to be a mother, but somehow her goal - her calling got lost to her husband Sam's calling. While studying overseas Sam and Lauren were drawn to one another and after returning to their respective homes in the United States decided that they were to be together.

But when Sam's calling takes them and their son Ryan to the remote regions of Nepal - Lauren and Ryan are left for weeks at a time while Sam works in the Himalayas visiting remote isolated villages. Lauren and Ryan feel this neglect and after a couple of years the stress starts cutting the ties that have bound them together as a family.

When a dear friend encourages Lauren to reconnect with the world outside Nepal - Lauren reluctantly does. This opens the door for Lauren to connect with a childhood friend - Aidan.  But some doors should never be opened and Lauren is about to discover every choice has a cost - she just never realized just how high a price she and Ryan would have to pay.

Of Stillness and Storm is not a book I would have ever picked up to read myself , but I was surprisingly drawn into to the story of Lauren's life once I started reading. There is a back and forth between the present and pivotal moments in the past that have gotten Lauren, Ryan, and Sam to the point that they are now at. The cover is apt a stormy background and a cord that is no longer whole - the cover is Lauren and Ryan's life as they are lost to the drive of Sam's calling.  This book is a tragic story in that Sam is so caught up in his vision, in his goal that he can't and won't see the life that he is helping to crush. And unfortunately this is an occurrence one can see if one looks in the right direction. This is a moving story that is worth reading.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher through the Fiction Guild with no expectation of a review positive or otherwise. All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:

“I felt torn between two worlds.
Each with its own mystery.
One more captivating than the other,
but the other more real and breathing.”

It took Lauren and her husband ten years to achieve their dream—reaching primitive tribes in remote regions of Nepal. But while Sam treks into the Himalayas for weeks at a time, finding passion and purpose in his work among the needy, Lauren and Ryan stay behind, their daily reality more taxing than inspiring. For them, what started as a calling begins to feel like the family’s undoing.
At the peak of her isolation and disillusion, a friend from Lauren’s past enters her life again. But as her communication with Aidan intensifies, so does the tension of coping with the present while reengaging with the past. It’s thirteen-year-old Ryan who most keenly bears the brunt of her distraction.
Intimate and bold, Of Stillness and Storm weaves profound dilemmas into a tale of troubled love and honorable intentions gone awry.

Midnight Sisters ~ Review with Character Sketch, Giveaway and more

Welcome to the Midnight Sisters' Blog Tour and Giveaway!
Learn all about author Sarah E. Boucher and her exciting new novel
based on the classic fairy tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Midnight Sisters
By Sarah E. Boucher
More than a decade ago Jonas Selkirk met Lady Ariela Spencer the eldest daughter of Lord Bromhurst.  Now assistant to the Head Gardener - Jonas is still in awe of Lady Ariela though any contact with any of the master's twelve daughters is strictly forbidden. But there is something about Lady Ariela and their few minutes of stolen conversations over the years that give added meaning to Jonas's life.
To Lord Bromhurst his daughters are a means to securing alliances and after his daughters' latest escapade he is determined to see them married as soon as possible. And Ari being the oldest is the most likely to be betrothed.
But the sisters latest escapade has Jonas worried - the girls disappeared during the night - their rooms empty - then only to be found within the confines of the house which had been thoroughly searched. But their reappearance only increases Jonas concerns. With Braden, a younger undergardener, Jonas determines to find out what the girls are doing and how best to protect them from themselves.
But the allure of the forbidden is a powerful draw and the tight hold their father has placed on them makes their nightly escapes all the more tempting. But their stolen moments of freedom may cost them more than they could ever imagine...
This is a delightful and lovely story that is from the perspective of Jonas. This is a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses and it is enchanting with no magic involved. This is a story of family and love that the reader will want to share. This book is appropriate for most readers - and perfect for age 14 and up (or younger advanced readers).
I was provided a digital ARC of this book by the author with no expectations of a review positive or otherwise - all opinions expressed are my own.
Specialized Character Sketch
Meet Ariela:
    I clutched her hand between mine and blinked to hold back the tears. She shifted on her pillows, a
tiny sigh escaping. The angel smile lit her face but pain nestled in the fine wrinkles about her eyes.
    “Ari.” The word was barely more than a breath. “I’m so sorry, my darling. I wish I could stay.”
     I bit my lip to hold the sob in. She reached a shaking hand out to tuck an errant lock of hair
behind my ear.
    “But you are stronger than you think.” She cupped my chin in her palm and stroked a cool finger
over my cheek.
     A fat tear squeezed out and trickled down my cheek. She wiped it away.
    “You are strong enough for your sisters and your father, my dear.”
    A deluge of tears poured down my face. I choked out the words, “I can’t do it without you.”
    Pain dragged at her features as she leaned forward to place a kiss on my forehead. Her lips were
chilly against my brow. “You have a strong heart, Ari. Follow its call. It will not lead you amiss, my
love.”
    She sank back into her pillows and her eyelids flitted shut. The angel expression settled over her
face, banishing any hint of pain. The grip on my hand faltered.
   “Mother . . .” The word, laced with sorrow, fell from my lips. With Father already grieving her
loss and twelve daughters, the youngest still an infant, how would we survive without her?
About Midnight Sisters:
Do not meddle with the Master's daughters.
The words rattle around Jonas’ head. What is the punishment again? Death? Dismemberment? Jonas, the newest addition to the gardening staff, can’t recall the exact penalty for breaking the rule. What does it matter anyway? He would never dream of meddling with the Earl of Bromhurst’s haughty daughters.
Until he comes face to face with Lady Ariela Spencer, the eldest of the His Lordship’s daughters.
Her elusive smile and open manner cause him to question his convictions. In no time, he’s drawn into Lady Ariela's world of mystery and intrigue, a world where she and her sisters will do anything—including leaving twelve empty beds at midnight—to escape their father’s strict rules.
Only Jonas can uncover the truth and save them from their father’s wrath and their own folly, if he is willing to risk everything he’s ever worked for.
Midnight Sisters is an imaginative fairy tale retelling that promises to delight and entertain readers. Midnight Sisters is available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle.
