To Kiss a Knight ~ Review

To Kiss a Knight
Best Laid Plans #2
By Grace Hitchcock

Vivienne Poppy is running away. She has no choice in the matter, not when her family is about to marry her off to the most deplorable of men. Of course, she didn't expect to be abducted by a highwayman. Nor did she anticipate having her funds stolen.

Sebastian Larkby didn't think he would abduct a lady while in service for the crown, but he couldn't leave her in the company of the man he had just relieved of money and letters. He also didn't expect Vivienne to be so determined to escape him, to the point of putting herself in danger. He's even more shocked to learn that she has assumed the name of his nonexistent wife, Lady Larkby. When his grandmother hears about this, Sebastian has no choice but to convince Vivienne to play the role of his wife for his dying grandmother's sake.

But when you first attempt to deceive, you open a whole unexpected mess of complications. Now Sebastian and Vivienne have to deal with the mess they have created without falling in love. How does one break the news to your beloved grandmother who rallied from death's door because she learned you were married?  Breaking grandma's heart is the least of their worries. Enter the evil relatives who bring a whole host of problems with them. Yes, they are truly evil. They are the kind that, if you know they are coming, you pack up, move to a different country, and don't leave a forwarding address, and for good measure, add a moat around your house and fill it with sharks to be sure they don't decide to make themselves at home. I would also play the Jaws theme song, but Vivienne and Sebastian don't have this as an option. They have to deal with the problem.

Overall, this was a good read, and one that, reading the first book in the series, is not necessary to fully enjoy To Kiss a Knight. It is a clean read with a Regency setting. And I loved Vivienne's character; she had determination, kindness, and spunk in abundance.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
When everything is going right, something must go wrong

Vivienne Poppy's plans are working out quite well. She's run away from her family and the prospect of a horrid marriage of convenience and plans to spend her time writing under her pseudonym, Lady Larkby. Until she discovers the old Larkby title is not as dead as she thought.

Yeoman of the Guard and recently knighted Sir Sebastian Larkby is stunned to discover a Lady Larkby that he does not remember marrying. Suddenly, Vivienne is left with a choice: relinquish her pen name, expose her true identity, and break Sebastian's dying grandmother’s heart—or feign marriage to Sebastian to keep the title and fulfill the old woman's wishes.

This witty novel from award-winning author Grace Hitchcock is filled with scandal, mishap, and just the right amount of romance.

"A rollicking Regency with romance, danger, humor, and unexpected plot twists you won't want to miss!"

Snapdragon ~ Review

Snapdragon:
A Thumbelina Retelling
A Garden of Fairytales
By Sarah Beran

Percy loves flowers and working in her mother's flower shop is the perfect way to spend her days. It's a life she loves and can't see herself doing anything else.

When Percy's mother hints at romance, she just doesn't see it happening when the men who show up in the flower shop already have sweethearts or wives. Nope not happening, and her walk with a old friend goes so bad. But when a stranger forces her into a strange world, a world that is dying, Percy is at a loss as to figure out why. He keeps saying he's taking her home. Right, mmhmm.

And then there is a Lord of Death (aka Hayes) and an underground community. Well, if three individuals can make a community, that is. Trapped in this Fairy Realm, Percy doesn't know how she'll ever return home. She misses her mother and her flowers.

This was an enjoyable story. There is a bit of violence and kidnapping which is where the Hades and Persephone retelling comes in. Then there is Hayes who is paying the price to keep the dying world alive. And then there are the secrets, lots of secrets which have a big bearing on the entire story.

About the Book:

A spunky florist. A dying kingdom. A bond that could change the fate of a realm.

Persephina’s idea of a perfect future has always involved exactly two things: her mother and their little flower shop. Sure, marriage would be nice, but it’s hard to find love when the only men Percy meets are there to buy flowers for their sweethearts…until a mysterious, handsome stranger shows up in her shop.

But all is not as it seems, and when an innocent walk goes disastrously wrong, Percy finds herself in a whole new realm of trouble.

Literally.

Trapped in the dying Fairy Realm, Percy is left with no choice but to seek help from the so-called Lord of Death. Just when it looks like a future is going to blossom, however, secrets come to light that could change everything.

Because fairy princes are not all that they seem.

And in the end, death comes for all.

Spring has sprung with these seven swoony sweet retellings. Each novella finds its happily ever after amidst themes of rebirth, hope, and new life. Each book is fully independent and they can be read in any order. “Snapdragon” is a combined retelling of Thumbelina and Hades and Persephone, featuring tropes such as Found Family, Grumpy/Sunshine, and Hidden Identity.

Missing in Texas ~ Review

Missing in Texas
Lone Star Defenders #2
By Virginia Vaughan

Twelve years ago, Dawn went missing in Mercy, Texas. FBI Agent Christy Williams is determined to crack her college roommate's cold case, and she finally feels qualified to attempt to do so. She knows who committed the crime, she just needs to prove it. There is just the issue of evidence, and Deputy Mike Tyner, who believes his cousin is innocent.

But Christy refuses to let Mike's belief color her investigation. Now Mike has to hope that she won't make the evidence fit her preconceived conclusions. With more than a decade standing between them and the crime, finding new evidence won't be easy.

But her official investigation has rattled something when she starts getting threats. Can Mike and Christy get the answers they seek before their investigation gets shut down by a killer who will do anything to get away with murder?

Christy is convinced that Mike can't be objective, which is a bit laughable in a kettle calling the pot black sort of way, as she comes in convinced of who did it. But overall, this is a good story. Both Mike and Christy are driven by the guilt they feel over the incident, which is a motivating factor in their drive to solve this case.

There are some moments of suspense as the killer moves in. But nothing over the top. The romance is clean, and this isn't a book that has any cringeworthy moments. There are some faith moments that will resonate with readers as the danger becomes all too real for Christy and Mike.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Daylily ~ Review

Daylily: A Snow White Retelling
A Garden of Fairy Tales
By Madeline Kersberger

Daylily is the princess of Blumen who spends much of her time among the castle's gardens. She has skills with a needle and has her looks to recommend her. But she knows she has little to offer besides her beauty, and her stepmother has decided the best way she can serve her country is by marrying as soon as possible. The first potential suitor is tolerable and, with time, could prove to be something more.

When tragedy strikes and Lily is forced to flee, she is forced to become someone with more substance. She must find a strength she never knew she possessed to survive and reclaim her rightful place. With a small contingent of loyal servants and soldiers willing to protect and give their lives for her, she must fight for what is hers.

I really enjoyed the first release in the Garden of Fairy Tales collection, which retold Snow White. The writing was engaging, and the characters came to life throughout. I recommend this book for tweens/teens and up. Overall, this is a clean read with some violence because battles are never friendly. I loved seeing Lily's growth and would love to step into this world again if given the opportunity.

About the Book:
Amid tragedy and betrayal, will Daylily find her true worth?

Daylily, the undeniably beautiful princess of Blumen, is unprepared when her family is betrayed. Finding herself thrust into a role she never expected to take, Lily must dig beyond the beauty she was taught to treasure and find the strength to meet the challenges she faces.

Welcome to the Blog Tour for
Perfect by Kimberly Keagan,

Perfect
Perfect
Hearts on Display #1
By Kimberly Keagan

William Walraven's life isn't as perfect as it looks. His father has unreasonable expectations. His financée has decided there are better marriage choices to be had among the English aristocracy. Add to that a tight timeline to open a new department store in New York, and you have a life that is rather messy. But it is all about appearances.

Will never expected was to find his attention diverted by a bookshop owner. Ivy King's bookshop is struggling. Since her parents' unexpected death two years ago, running the shop has been a struggle. Ivy is up for the challenge, but she doesn't know how they will make it with a department store opening up just two blocks away. She also never expected to find herself enjoying the attentions of a gentleman from Philadelphia.

This was a lovely read, featuring a touch of mystery, some romance, and interesting family dynamics that all come together to create a compelling story. The title 'Perfect' is fitting, as both Will and Ivy are trying to find their perfect lives. For Will, it means finding affirmation from his father, which, of course, involves sacrificing his hopes and dreams for the family business. For Ivy, perfection seems to be an unachievable goal, at least in the eyes of society.
The two are perfect for each other, but many obstacles stand in their way. The most important thing both must realize is that worth is found in God, not in the world. No one can measure up to the expectations of human perfection, so we should not make this the focal point of our lives.

Historical Romance

In the glittering era of the Gilded Age, the heirs of Philadelphia’s Denwall Department Stores navigate family expectations, relentless ambition, and unexpected love.

William Walraven’s picture-perfect life is turned upside down when his fiancée jilts him for an English aristocrat and his father refuses to name him as his successor. To prove he’s worthy of leading Denwall Department Stores, Will must open their first New York store under budget and before the Christmas shopping season.

Overwhelmed by disappointment and a nearly impossible deadline, Will has no time for distractions—especially not the captivating bookseller he saves from being crushed by a beer wagon.

Ivy King and her aging grandmother are barely keeping their struggling bookshop afloat. Though drawn to the charming, enigmatic man who saved her life, Ivy has no illusions about her place in the world. It certainly isn’t beside a department store heir whose dazzling emporium threatens to close her family’s business.

Brought together in the wake of an attack on Will’s brother, Will and Ivy find themselves at a crossroads—torn between the expectations that define them and a future neither expected.

Perfect is a clean, wholesome historical romance featuring opposites-attract tension, class differences, a touch of mystery and humor, and an inspirational journey of faith and love.

Shadowless ~ Review

Shadowless
By Alison Robinson
Published by Village Editorial

When souls are split in two, the truth might shatter everything.

This book has an interesting premise: everyone, except Rowena, shares their soul with a magical animal companion called a Shadow. Rowena has a companion, but it is not like everyone else's. No, hers is silent and powerless, and it isn't an animal. If the wrong people learn about her, it could cost her her life. Because of this threat, her father has kept her isolated and hidden away. But when Penalynn Graft, an outcast Scholastic, moves into the area, Rowena's life changes (she becomes Penalynn's apprentice and begins venturing into her village).

Everything seen through Rowena's point of view is flavored by her magicless existence, her father's fears, and her intelligence. I love how she grows once she is no longer isolated. But there are secrets Penalynn is keeping, secrets which have a huge bearing on Rowena and every magic-using human in the world.

This book most definitely leaves things in such a way that I want a sequel as soon as possible. I also feel that this is one of those books I'll want to reread, looking for hints I may have missed the first time.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

In a kingdom where souls are bound to magical animals called Shadows, Rowena’s Shadow is a ghost—silent, powerless, and a death sentence if anyone finds out.

The citizens of Wyre share a soul with their Shadow, a supernatural animal companion that gives them the ability to perform magic. But Rowena was born with a ghost for a Shadow, incapable of magic and marking her as a dangerous anomaly. Her superstitious neighbors would say she must be reported to the king (and executed for good measure!). And they would if they knew she existed—but they don’t.

Hidden from the world with only her father and ghost for company, Rowena’s made the best of her secret life. She fills her days tinkering, inventing, and longing for the magic everyone else has.

When Penalynn Graft, a disgraced Scholastic who refuses to use her own Shadow’s magic, is banished to Rowena’s city, rumors swirl about her rebellion.

Both Rowena and Penalynn are outcasts: one hidden, one exiled. Both are cut off from magic: one by birth, the other by choice.

Together, they could unearth the truth about the bond linking humans to Shadows, which, until now, has been lost under a veil of ancient mythology.

But in a world where souls are split in two, the truth might shatter everything.

With the stakes of The Golden Compass, the thrilling action of The Wingfeather Saga, and the heart and spiritual depth of the Chronicles of Narnia, Shadowless is a gripping fantasy tale that will captivate fans of epic adventures and magical worlds.
