Coming July 4, 2024 ~ True Love's Wish & Other Short Stories

I thrilled that you can soon read True Love's Wish & Other Short Stories.
Just a little about the stories.
There are three - True Love's Wish, The Decorator, and Forever Yours.
I loved writing each of these short stories, but (drops voice to a whisper)
don't tell the other stories but Forever Yours is my favorite.

Here is a short blurb for each story and a small snippet from each:

True Love's Wish:
With her brother about to propose to her best friend, Ashley makes a wish on the Christmas star for her own true love. What follows is a sweet story about finding love where we least expect it. Has all the good feels of a Hallmark movie without the snarky leading lady.

The Decorator:
Bri loves her job as a decorator, but this job has a winter surprise in store for her.

Forever Yours:
In a Cinderella/Sleeping Beauty retelling mashup, Ella lives a hundred years in the hope of awakening her prince. But the curse that has held a kingdom in an endless slumber isn't so easily defeated.

To Love the Brooding Baron ~ Review

To Love the Brooding Baron
By Jentry Flint

Arabella Latham has long thought fondly of Lord Henry Northcott. But Henry is stoic and rather standoffish, even with his good friends. And as fond of Arabella as Henry is, he can never let himself fall in love with her. He is carrying a heavy burden, one that makes him an unsuitable match for any woman. He's lived for years with the secret of his family and worked to be above any scandal that could bring further shame on the Northcott name.

This book is a sort of Beauty and the Beast retelling with Shakespearean quotes scattered throughout. The Shakespearean quotes are an important part of the story, a sweet part, actually. Arabella and Henry couldn't be more different—she's bright and vivacious, while he is subdued and somber.

Though it isn't noted in the book, it is a companion/sequel to the author's previous Proper Romance book, Games on a Ballroom, and, like that book, touches on serious topics. I highly recommend this book; it was an excellent read.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I would provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Opposites attract and sparks fly when the vivacious
Arabella falls for a baron who lives
under the shadow of a scandalous family secret.

Arabella Latham is a free spirit who longs to feel the spark of true love, but few men can match her passion for Shakespeare or her zest for life. Though her prospects seem slim, Arabella knows she can always count on the handsome but stoic Lord Henry Northcott, dubbed “The Brooding Baron” by the ton, to be willing to engage in intelligent conversation and even share a congenial dance with her at almost every ball. His quiet demeanor is the opposite of her vivacious personality, and she finds herself drawn to him, despite their differences.

Lord Northcott has quietly admired Arabella for years, grateful that his friendship with her brother has allowed him to share in her company. But he knows he cannot pursue a romantic relationship with any woman—let alone someone as bright and beautiful as Arabella—because of the shadow that an old family scandal has cast over his life. He has vowed to preserve what is left of his family’s reputation by holding himself above reproach apart from society and focusing the majority of his efforts at Parliament.

But Arabella is determined to show Lord Northcott that life is meant to be enjoyed, and she sets out to see what is behind the walls the Brooding Baron has built around himself. Could the spark of true love be enough to drive away the shadows holding Henry back?

Beneath a Crescent Shadow ~ Review

Beneath a Crescent Shadow
The Balkan Legends #1
A.L. Sowards

This is such a good book. I don't think I've ever read a book set in 14th Century Serbia before. Yes, I had World History in High School and it touched on the Ottoman Empire, but this book takes all those dry facts and dates giving it depth, making one care. Now don't misunderstand me, I loved history class but to make one care about the people involved and empathize with the trials they faced is special.

The story opens with Konstantin facing ruin. His lands have been attacked, famine seems almost certain, and paying the upcoming tribute impossible. His only hope is a bride with a rich dowry, which is arranged for him by his grandfather to a young woman named Suzana.

Suzana's life has been hard. Her father has made her feel worthless and unloved. Her only worth is in her dowry and whatever alliance she may bring to her father through it. And she carries the pain of her past and the abuse she suffered with her. What she never expected was to win her husband's love.

But happiness doesn't seem to be assured as war seperates Konstantin and Suzana. Both experience great tragedy that affects them deeply. So deeply that it could utterly destroy what they have if they can survive what is coming.

This is the first book in the Balkan Legends series and I confess, I'm eagerly awaiting what is to come next in the series. This is a well-written book with compelling characters. Highly recommend it to fans of Medieval Historical Fiction or Eastern European Historical Fiction,

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I share my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
After an arranged marriage, Konstantin and Suzana must find a way to meet
the demands of a conquering Ottoman sultan amid a torrent of setbacks and
dangers much closer to their Balkan home.

The Balkans, 1373

A devastating battle claimed the lives of Konstantin's father, uncle, and most of their Serb army, leaving him to rule as a vassal of the Ottoman sultan, a role he is wholly unprepared for. Between war, famine, and a persistent band of brigands, Konstantin is nearly bankrupt. He will need to find a wealthy bride to marry if he is to have any hope of saving his lands and securing his future.

A betrothal to Suzana, the daughter of a prosperous merchant, is soon arranged, and upon meeting her, Konstantin immediately feels hope that their marriage could someday grow into love. Yet, from the moment of Konstantin and Suzana's betrothal, enemies threaten their lives, outlaws prey on their lands, and the terrors of Suzana's abusive past haunt their fragile new relationship. As this onslaught of threats closes in, the two face challenges that will test their love, their faith, and their hope to save their people and win their freedom from the heavy weight of Ottoman oppression.

An Art Lover's Guide to Paris and Murder ~ Excerpt

Today, I'm pleased to share with you an excerpt from An Art Lover's Guide to Paris and Murder by Dianne Freeman. This newly released title delves into a Victorian-era mystery that combines art with murder in the City of Paris. Utterly delightful, yes? Well, this little taste will whet your literary appetite for more.

Excerpt from An Art Lover’s Guide, by Dianne Freeman

Monsieur Allard singled me out with his gaze. “Are you an admirer of Ducasse’s work?”

“Based on this painting, I believe I could be,” I replied. “But I haven’t seen enough of it to be sure. And I must admit, I am no connoisseur.”

“I assume you are a patron, Monsieur Allard,” George said, “since you arranged this tribute. Perhaps you can walk us through this display and show us the finer points of his work.”

Alicia Stoke-Whitney had stepped into view beside Allard. “There is no one who could do it better,” she said. “If anyone knows Ducasse’s particular style, it is Lucien.”

Monsieur Allard smiled fondly at her, then turned back to me. “Paul Ducasse was my dearest friend. I managed all his exhibits and sales, freeing him to devote himself to his art.”

He raised an arm to guide us along the long wall of Ducasse paintings. I let George move ahead with Allard and hung a step behind with Alicia. We listened attentively while Allard described technique and pointed out the nature of light, color, and expression. I simply knew I would have hung any of them on my walls with great pleasure. They were all of scenes the artist must have viewed every day and of people he knew—intimate, honest portraits that made me feel as if I knew them, too.

I tore my gaze from one canvas, only to see that I did indeed know the person depicted in the next painting. It was Lady Julia, but not as I’d ever seen her. No more than twenty-three or twenty-four years of age, she stood behind an easel, applying brush to canvas, wearing a paint-stained smock over her dress, with a paintbrush tucked behind one ear. Her dark brown hair fell from a loose chignon and formed frenzied waves around her face. The artist seemed to catch her as she glanced up from her work. The look in her eyes was unmistakably one of love.

I couldn’t help but stare. Unless someone had been standing behind Ducasse as he painted her, Lady Julia was obviously in love with the man.

“This is quite . . . something,” George said. He did not seem as surprised as me.

Monsieur Allard gave George a narrow look. “This is an example of his earlier work. Not his best piece, by far.” He shifted his regard from George to the painting and crossed his arms, nodding to himself. “It does show his promise, though, I must admit.”

A woman stepped up next to Allard, oozing elegance, as so many Frenchwomen did. Her blond hair was drawn up with a minimum of twisting and fixed with a jet embellishment that matched the trim on the bodice of her gown. A wide waistband, almost like a cummerbund, separated it from the black silk skirt that swept the floor in a demi-train. She was as much a work of art as the paintings in this room.

Allard angled himself to include her in the conversation. “May I present Madame Ducasse?” he asked, then turned to her. “This is Lady Harleigh and her husband, Monsieur Hazelton, from England.”

So, the artist had left a widow. “Please accept our condolences on your loss, madame,” I said. “Such a tragic accident.”

She gave me a wan smile as she turned from the painting to George. “Hazelton? I see the family resemblance. You are related, are you not?”

Monsieur Allard gasped. “Do you mean to say . . . ?” He let the words drift as he, too, looked from the painting to George and back. “I never knew that was Lady Julia,” he said. “I never knew . . .”

My guess was that the man hadn’t meant to repeat himself. If he had finished the second sentence, I suspect he would have said that he never knew Lady Julia was in love with Paul Ducasse.

“It was many years ago,” Madame Ducasse said, and for a moment, I thought she had read my mind. Then I realized she was speaking to Allard’s comment that he hadn’t recognized Julia. “Perhaps she would like to have this one.”

Allard’s harrumph evoked a chuckle from her. “It is not one of his best works,” she said. “You said so yourself.”

“I can see why my aunt might be interested in purchasing the painting,” George said, “but on the off chance she isn’t, I certainly am.”

At the exposition, swarming with tourists, tragedy casts a pall on the festivities. A footbridge collapses. Julia is among the casualties. However, she was not just another fateful victim. Resurgence of Dawn

Resurgence of Dawn
Quest of Fire #5
By Brett Armstrong

This is the fifth book in the Quest of Fire series and it opens with both Jason and Anargen hurting and despairing at the losses they've each suffered.

But suffering doesn't end their quest; rather, it is a part of the journey—one that can strengthen or break them. Both Anargen and Jason are faced with submitting to the darkness, turning and running from it, or standing firm against it.

Two lines from the early portion of the book sum up well what the Knights of Light are facing at this time. They've reached a fork in the road, so to speak, and need to dwell on these two truths:

"But you look at the brokenness and darkness and say there is no light. How can you forget so quickly those hours when the light and the High King have been so clear and evident?"

"If you only open your eyes to the night, you'll never see the day."

One needs to look for the light when the darkness attempts to choke it out of our life.

This is an excellent series. I feel those 14 and up would enjoy it. The very nature of this series makes it imperative that you read the previous books before reading this one. The backstory is essential for total enjoyment and comprehension. The story world's depth and complexity falls between that of Narnia and Lord Of The Rings. I highly recommend it if you are looking for epic fantasy with a spiritual leaning.

I was offered a complimentary copy of the book but did not accept it as I had already acquired a copy of my own.

Born of Gilded Mountains ~ Review

Born of Gilded Mountains
By Amanda Dykes

This is an interesting book. It mixes the past with the present, with the present being 1948.  In 1928, Marybeth Spatts and Rusty Bright became penpals and best friends. Over the years, Rusty shared the world she lived in through those letters, letters that shared loss, joys, and the everyday living that was to be had in Mercy Peak. But she also shared about a mystery and a promise that was at the heart of the mountain and the community.

When Mercy Windsor gets caught in a Hollywood snafu, she decides to finally fulfill her promise to her best friend and to reclaim the person she used to be. But to do so, she'll need to uncover the truths long buried. Secrets have held Mercy Peak in its grasp, shaping it in ways no one expected. And it is in this world that Mercy (aka Marybeth) finds herself now, hoping to call it home.

I loved how the author presented the story by blending the letters between the girls with story elements, interviews, newspaper articles, and scripts. This made for an engaging read, especially with the mystery that is woven into it. There are a couple of mysteries, one of which is the scandal that destroyed Mercy's career. Then, there is the question of what was found all those years ago on Mercy Peak that changed the community. And one mustn't forget a missing train.

I highly recommend this book. Its unique flavor is perfect for a long, hot summer weekend.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Be sure to check out my interview with Amanda Dykes and enter the book giveaway.

About the Book:

When newcomer Mercy Windsor arrives in Mercy Peak in 1948 after a scandal shatters her gilded world as Hollywood's beloved leading lady, she is determined to forge a new life in obscurity in this time-forgotten Colorado haven. She purchases Wildwood--an abandoned estate with a haunting history--and begins to restore it to its former glory.

But as she does, her every move tugs at the threads of that mountain's lore, unearthing what became of her long-lost pen pal, Rusty Bright, and the whereabouts of the infamous Galloping Goose Engine No. 8, which vanished years ago, along with the mailbag it carried, whose contents could change the course of countless lives. Not to mention another fabled treasure that--if found--could right so many wrongs.

Among the towering mountains that stand as silent witnesses, the ghosts of the past entangle with the courage of the present to find a place where healing, friendship, and hope can abide amid a world forever changed.
