Shadowed Loyalty ~ Review

Shadowed Loyalty
By Roseanna M. White

Sabina Mancari appears to have it all, but she feels unneeded and unwanted since her sister's death. Allowing these feelings to grow makes her susceptible to a man's admiration who uses her to get to her father. The man she thought loved her is determined to bring down her father as part of his work as a Prohibition agent. With nowhere else to turn, she calls on her childhood friend and her fiancé of three years.

Lorenzo (aka Enzo) has loved Sabina all her life and looks forward to the day that he can marry her and be free of all ties to the life they grew up in. Enzo knows that the life his family is caught up in is wrong, and he wants to break free, working not for any of Chicago's families but for himself and Sabina. But when Sabina calls asking for his help in getting her father out of custody, he finds himself caught on the edge of a life he doesn't want. Worse, the man who betrayed Sabina has caused a rift in their relationship with mere months until their wedding.

As Enzo and Sabina work through everything, they also work to strengthen and rebuild their relationship and the truth they once shared. Sabina has lost her belief in her father's integrity and honesty, believing that her father was different from the other bosses in Chicago's Sicilian community.

What's sad is that the things they were trying to escape in Italy were the very things they brought with them. The underworld of Chicago's Sicilian underworld was not pretty. If it was illegal or immoral, they most likely dabbled in it. Sadly, the American Dream they searched for was lost in their inability to break the bonds that bind them to the world they left behind. Shadowed Loyalty is a look at Chicago in the 1920s, a world in flux as it is about to change. Prohibition was the reason behind the government's interest in the families, but this wasn't the only catalyst for the coming changes, and not all of them were looking to improve conditions for those caught in this dark and evil world. As Sabina and Enzo learn, it is only through faith in God and leaning on prayer that they could break free and withstand the assaults on their souls.

As with all of Roseanna M. White's works, one can see that a lot of research went into this book. The attention to detail is impressive, and the various characters have a depth to them that brings this book to life. For anyone wanting a squeaky clean read, that is not happening, not if the book is historically accurate. There isn't anything depicted per se, but abuses and violence are mentioned. I mean, this is the mob, and they profited off the evils of the day.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion ~ all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Sabina Mancari never questioned her life as the daughter of Chicago’s leading mob boss until bullets tore apart her world. The man she thought she loved turned out to be an undercover Prohibition agent. Now she sees how ugly the underworld can be. Ambushes, bribes, murder, prostitution—she thought her beloved Papa was above all that, but clearly, he isn’t. What does that mean, though, for her and their family? Maybe Lorenzo, the fiancĂ© who has barely paid her any attention in the last two years, has the right idea by planning to escape their world.

All his life, Lorenzo’s family assumed he would join the Church, but he had different ideas—marrying Sabina and pursuing a career in the law. But despite his morals, he knows at the core he isn’t so unlike his father and brothers, which has always terrified him. Has he, in trying to protect Sabina from his flaws, in fact, harmed her? It sure seems that way when he realizes he all but forced her into the arms of the Prohibition Agent, now bent on tearing her family apart at all costs. But how can they rebuild what has so long been neglected…and do it in the shadow of the dark empire of the Mafia?

Shadowed Loyalty, set amid the glitz and scandal of the Roaring Twenties, examines what love really means and how we draw lines between family and our own convictions, especially when following the one could mean losing the other.

Welcome to the Takeover Tour for

A Rose for the Resistance

A Rose for the Resistance
Heroines of WWII #5
By Angela K. Couch

Rosalie Barrieau has tried to avoid the threat of Nazi forces taking France but ignoring a threat does not neutralize it. She is determined to keep her brother safe amid the loss she has undergone, but her brother is equally determined to join the resistance.

But how can you stay safe when all around you there are those in need? How can you stand by and do nothing when others suffer in the face of war and occupation? These are the questions and thoughts that motivate Rosalie, her brother Marcel, and Franz Kafka to do what has to be done.

A Rose for the Resistance takes place mainly in France from June, 1940 to July, 1946, and looks at the actions of Rosalie, Marcel and Franz during this time. Do you give in to fear, blindly follow orders, or listen to your heart and do all you can to help end the war, to aid those who have been declared your enemy?

This was an intriguing and engaging read. Fans of WWII fiction will enjoy this book. I have not read Angela K. Couch's work before but I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. The characters were engaging and complex, the scenes detailed but not excessively so. Would make for an interesting book club selection.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I share my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

A Strike to the Heart ~ Review with Giveaway

A Strike to the Heart JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for
A Strike to the Heart by Danielle Grandinetti,

A Strike to the Heart

A Strike to the Heart
Strike to the Heart #1
By Danielle Grandinetti

Lily Moore isn't like most young women, she insists on living on her, trains hunting dogs, and is (gasp) unmarried. In 1933, Eagle, Wisconsin, Lily and her twin brother Joey, are considered troublesome, doing things their way and not falling into the expected mold.

But when Lily goes missing, the Craft Agency is tasked with finding her. But things go very wrong before Lily's rescue is carried out by Miles Wright. As Miles attempts to keep Lily safe he is faced with his own challenges, including the traitorous leanings of his heart where Lily is concerned.

With a third dairy strike becoming more likely each day, Lily and Miles face greater danger. But where the danger is coming from remains as elusive as does the reason why.

A Strike to the Heart is the first book in the Strike to the Heart series and is the second work in the series - the first being To Stand in the Breach, which is the series prequel novella. Where the novella focused on Joey Moore and Katy Wells, this book focuses on Lily and Miles. Joey and Katy are in this book as supporting characters, or in Joey's case, an antagonist. I find the whole dairy situation interesting - the Depression is still having an effect on the country and farmers have been hit hard - do you strike to demand better compensation and dump what milk you have getting no compensation or do you sell what you have for a mere pittance and stay trapped in the cycle? This is the situation that sets the entire story in motion and it is a dilemma that I can honestly say would be hard to weigh in on.

I have to say I really like this series. The characters are relatable and I have to say I really like Lily and can understand why she has taken the path she has. Lily is misunderstood and it's sad that her family is so clueless about her and what makes her who she is.

Fans of Depression Era Historical Fiction will love this book. If you want to travel the country through books and make a stop in each state here is your Wisconsin destination. This would also be a great book club reading selection, in my opinion.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Title: A Strike to the Heart
Series: Strike to the Heart #1
Author: Danielle Grandinetti
Publisher: Iron Stream Media
Release Date: April 12, 2022
Genre: Historical Romantic Suspense

She’s fiercely independent. He’s determined to protect her.

Wisconsin, 1933―When a routine mission becomes an ambush that kills his team, Craft Agency sniper Miles Wright determines to find the persons responsible and protect the woman he rescued. But the fierce independence that led Lily Moore to leave her family’s dairy business for the solitary life of a dog trainer and the isolation of her farm don’t make that easy. Neither does his unwanted attraction to her. Meanwhile, escalating incidents confirm that she’s far from safe.

Lily fears letting the surprisingly gentle retired marine into her life almost as much as she fears whoever is threatening her. As Wisconsin farmers edge toward another milk strike, one that will surely turn violent, it becomes clear that the plot against Lily may be part of a much larger conspiracy. When the search for her abductor leads close to home, she must decide whether to trust her family or the man who saved her life.

The Master Craftsman ~ Review

The Master Craftsman
By Kelli Stuart

Ava Laine hasn't seen her father for ten years. He was always too busy treasure hunting to settle down and be a present father. But he is dying, and she is his only chance to complete his last hunt - the missing fifty-third Imperial Fabergé egg. But this isn't just any Fabergé egg; no, this is one that was hidden away to preserve it and to keep Karl Fabergé's loyalties secret. And Nick Laine is convinced that the time has come to discover this lost treasure.

We are taken from the present to Imperial Russia (1904-1917) in an alternating chapter shift as these two timelines converge at the end of the book. We see Russia through the eyes of Peter Karl Fabergé as discontent grows towards the excesses of the Russian royalty and the rich while the common people struggle to survive from one day to the next. The inhumanity Karl observes inspires him to create one of his greatest works, but the very creation of such a piece endangers him. And as everything comes to a head, Karl is caught in the middle of everything. But he entrusts the protection of his creation to Alma Pihl.

Who is Alma Pihl? This is the question that will launch Ava's quest and place her in danger. But Ava has the drive and stubbornness of her parents and is determined to see it through to its success.

I found this to be an enjoyable and engaging read. The Master Craftsman is a Split-time Romance set in early Twentieth-Century Russia and the present day. I loved the back-and-forth between the two timelines as the story progressed.  The characters have depth, and the settings are detailed without wordiness. But what is the treasure they seek? And will it be discovered?

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

When Ava Laine’s dying treasure-hunter father entrusts her with his mission to find a missing FabergĂ© egg, she has no idea how high the stakes will climb–or how her allegiances will be tested. Join the hunt in this lavish, dual-time narrative that plunges you into the 1917 Russian Revolution, the fall of the Romanovs, and long-buried Soviet secrets.

In 1917, Alma Pihl, a master craftsman in the House of FabergĂ©, was charged to protect one of the greatest secrets in Russian history–an unknown FabergĂ© Egg that Peter Karl FabergĂ© secretly created to honor his divided allegiance to both the people of Russia and the Imperial tsar’s family. When Alma and her husband escaped Russia for their native Finland in 1921, she took the secret with her, guarding her past connection to the Romanov family.

Three generations later, world-renowned treasure hunter Nick Laine is sick and fears the secret of the missing egg will die with him. With time running out, he entrusts the mission of retrieving the egg to his estranged daughter, Ava, who has little idea of the dangers she is about to face. As the stakes are raised, Ava is forced to declare her own allegiance–and the consequences are greater than she could have imagined.

This modern-day treasure hunt from award-winning author Kelli Stuart transports you into the opulent and treacherous world of the Russian Revolution to unearth mysteries long buried.

My Soul to Take ~ Review

My Soul to Take
Oculus Gate #3
By Bryan Davis

My Soul to Take takes place just after Invading Hell with Leo and Iona trapped in Hell. Thanks to the machinations of Alex (aka Alexandria), Leo and Iona's bodies have been separated from their souls, allowing Alex and Bart to escape from Hell in the stolen bodies.

Returned to Earth, Alex works towards restoring her soul to her body. And to accomplish this and her long-term goal of reclaiming her power, she has to stay two steps ahead of Kat, Ben, Jack, and Trudy. Can she convince everyone that she is Iona?

Surviving Hell is the first obstacle facing Leo and Iona. Next, find a way out when disembodied souls are trapped forever. They'll need help, and they may have found it in a person known as a Reaper, someone who was thought to be more myth than truth. (Read Bryan Davis's Reaper Trilogy for all the info on Reapers.)

But as Ben, Jack, Kat, Trudy, Leo, and Iona have learned, nothing is ever easy, and Alex has plans that no one could have foreseen. Alex has to be stopped no matter the cost, and before she can put her diabolical plans into action. Because if Alex has her way, being trapped in Hell will be nothing to what she has planned.

My Soul to Take is an excellent continuation of the Oculus Gate series. The intensity doesn't abate and, if possible, grows.   If you are a fan of Speculative Fiction, Fantasy, SciFi, Dystopian Fiction, or even Bryan Davis, you need to read this book and series. Excellent development and attention to detail. This is not a standalone book, so you need to read the first two books in the series before reading this one; otherwise, you will be lost.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion; all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
The souls of Leo and Iona are trapped in hell, their bodies inhabited by the souls of Alex and her henchman Bartholomew. Now disguised as Iona, Alex launches her centuries-old plan to restore her power and take control of both Earth and Viridi.

Unable to communicate with their allies, the real Leo and Iona embark on a journey, hoping to somehow break through hell’s impenetrable gates. Along the way, they meet a strange woman, a Reaper who believes she can help them escape.

On Earth, Ben Garrison and company begin to suspect that Leo and Iona are not who they seem, and their souls might still be in hell. Aware of their suspicions, Alex, in Iona’s body, escapes them to pursue her world-takeover plans.

As Leo and Iona face the dangers of a beast-infested forest, a lava-filled chasm, and the nightmarish Lake of Fire, Ben tries to figure out a way to help them from Earth. Only one option presents itself—to return to hell and face the dangers himself.

Canyon Survival ~ Review

Canyon Survival
By Connie Queen

She has no idea who she is or why someone is trying to kill her. All she knows is that she has to keep the two young children in her care safe at all costs. But can she trust the stranger who comes to their aid?

Riggs Brenner has turned away from everything outside his canyon home. The past with its regrets are his constant companions. He let down the two most important people in his life when they most needed him and he's not about to make the same mistake twice. The young woman whose life depends on just how well he can defend her and her two young charges has put his former FBI senses on alert - is she truly a victim of amnesia? Or is it all an elaborate hoax? Only time will tell and Riggs isn't about to let the answers to his questions go unanswered.

Canyon Survival opens on a cliff, literally. We, as readers, are left wonder just how did our Jane Doe and two young children end up where they were. And like our heroine we have questions as to her identity and why someone seems intent on ending her life. Slowly answers are revealed but in the process more questions surface.

The action and suspense are steady throughout with a slow upbuild towards the end that will have you moving closer to the edge of your seat, unless like me, you are laden down with Dachshunds. This is a book you won't want to put down as you seek to understand just what happened and why it was such BIG deal.

I have not read Connie Queen before and found her writing to be engaging, the characters have a depth to them, and the background settings provide enough to allow your mind's eye to take it all in. I highly recommend this as a good get-to-know-the-author book. I personally look forward to reading previous and future books from her.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Ambushed in the canyon with no memory of why…
