Murder on Pointe ~ Review with Giveaway

MURDER ON POINTE by C.S. McDonaldMurder on Pointe
A Fiona Quinn Mystery #1
By C.S. McDonald
Narrated by Maren Swenson Waxenberg

Fiona Quinn is thrilled her BFF Silja Ramsay is back in town and about to dance the principal role in Coppelia. But before she has time to even enjoy a visit with Silja murder has taken out one of the dancers. Having discovered the body Fiona and Silja are the police's best chance at witnessing anything of importance.

Homicide Detective Nathan Landry is going to do his best to solve the case and if that means recruiting Fiona Quinn to go undercover for him so be it. It's been more than ten years since Fiona last danced, thanks to a career-ending skiing injury, but with pleas from Detective Landry and Silja Fiona agrees. But she won't skip out on her kindergarten class so the ballet will just have to work around her schedule. Can Fiona find a clue to help catch a killer before they strike again? Or will she become the next target? And even more important is Detective Landry interested in her as Silja suggested or is it just wishful thinking? And then there is Fiona's house, not saying more but it definitely has a few interesting attributes that Fiona is not wanting to explain.

Not that murder is fun or enjoyable, but overall this was an enjoyable read (or listen in my case). And I learned more about ballet than I had previously known so the glimpse behind the scenes was more than a little interesting. This is the first book in the Fiona Quinn Mystery series and this is definitely a series I can see myself enjoying books of. The pacing was good and at just 4 hours and 30 minutes not too long of a read (or listen) and it was perfect for commuting to work. The narration by Maren Swenson Waxenberg was done well and most of the character voices were distinct enough to tell them apart easily.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Meet the Author:

For twenty-six years C.S. McDonald’s life whirled around a song and a dance. Classically trained at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School, The Pittsburgh Dance Alloy, and many others, she became a professional dancer and choreographer. During that time, she choreographed many musicals and an opera for the Pittsburgh Savoyards. In 2011 she retired from her dance career to write. Under her real name, Cindy McDonald, she writes murder-suspense and romantic suspense novels. In 2014 she added the pen name, C.S. McDonald, to write children’s books for her grandchildren. In 2016 she added the Fiona Quinn Mysteries to that expansion. She decided to write the cozy mystery series that everyone, including teens and tweens, can read and enjoy. Presently, the Fiona Quinn Mysteries nine books with a tenth slated for 2021. The books are also available on audio, narrated by Maren Swenson Waxenberg. Cindy’s newest venture is The Owl’s Nest Mysteries. Once again, she has set her cozy mystery in Pittsburgh. The female protagonist, Alexa Owl, is much different from Fiona Quinn. The Owl’s Next Mysteries has a little grit, a little time travel, a little romance, and a whole lot of cozy! Ms. McDonald resides on her Thoroughbred farm known as Fly by Night Stables near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Bill, and her poorly behaved Cocker Spaniel, Allister.

The Dress Shop on King Street ~ Review

The Dress Shop on King Street
Heirloom Secrets #1
By Ashley Clark

Harper Dupree's dreams never seem to come to fruition and she is constantly disappointed. But when she joins her dream with Millie it seems that finally, both women will see a long-held dream come true.

Millie Middleton has a secret, a secret that could cost her everything if the truth came out. A secret that made her choose who she would be. And it cost her the family she dearly loved. To deny part of oneself was not something she did lightly, but the world refused to accept her for who she was.

For more than 50 years Millie has had to deny the truth but as her long-held dream comes closer to reality she has a chance to reveal the truth. But revealing a long-held truth isn't as easy as it seems.

The Dress Shop on King Street takes the reader on a journey through history with a pivotal moment occurring in the prologue which is set in 1860's Charleston, South Carolina. The story offers a back-and-forth in which Millie's story is presented (starting in 1946) and Harper's which is present day. This back-and-forth slowly unfolds a story that is both beautiful and heartbreaking. And then there is Peter Perkins who could very well hold the key to what both Millie and Harper want. But sometimes what we think we want is so different from what we need and this is a truth that needs to be discovered personally.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations but to provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Harper Dupree has pinned all her hopes on a future in fashion design. But when it comes crashing down around her, she returns home to Fairhope, Alabama, and to Millie, the woman who first taught her how to sew. As Harper rethinks her own future, long-hidden secrets about Millie's past are brought to light.

In 1946, Millie Middleton--the daughter of an Italian man and a Black woman--boarded a train and left Charleston to keep half of her heritage hidden. She carried with her two heirloom buttons and the dream of owning a dress store. She never expected to meet a charming train jumper who changed her life forever . . . and led her yet again to a heartbreaking choice about which heritage would define her future.

Now, together, Harper and Millie return to Charleston to find the man who may hold the answers they seek . . . and a chance at the dress shop they've both dreamed of. But it's not until all appears lost that they see the unexpected ways to mend what frayed between the seams.

Limitless ~ Review with Giveaway

Limitless
The Power of Hope and Resilience to Overcome Circumstance
By Mallory Weggemann
With Tiffany Yecke Brooks

Mallory's childhood was one of happy memories but her family wasn't unfamiliar with heartache and struggles. So when a medical procedure went wrong, altering her life permanently she had a foundation on which to build on and the strength of her family to help see her through it.

With hard work, Mallory remade her life but swimming was something that carried over. Swimming provided a challenge that forced her to improve herself. And competing was a goal that could be defined and focused on. But when an accident threatens the life she has created she needs to rediscover who she is and what defines her life.

When life throws us the unexpected we are left with questions. Questions that must be answered, that demand a response from us. If we don't respond we will be stuck, limiting ourselves. But with the love and support of those closest to us, we can respond. As circumstances change our response may change, but it is our choice. And our choices are limitless, defined only by the limits we place upon ourselves.

Limitless falls into the self-help, motivational genre with a good dose of biographical material as we are taken on a journey of discovery through Mallory Weggemann's life. A life of highs and lows. Joys and disappointments. A life filled with family, love, and support. Throughout this book, there are little gems of wisdom that are best stored away to provide us with needed treasure when we too face challenges.

This book would make an excellent book club selection. If one is drawn to "the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat" this would be a worthy choice to add to your shelf of books. If you are asking why and unable to find an answer this book may help you find peace in not knowing.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Hardcover: 272 Pages
Publisher: Thomas Nelson (March 2, 2021)

The Paralympic gold-medalist, world champion swimmer, ESPY winner, and NBC Sports commentator uses her extraordinary story to equip others to meet whatever challenges they face in life.

On January 21, 2008, a routine medical procedure left Mallory Weggemann paralyzed from her waist down. Less than two years later, Mallory had broken eight world records, and by the 2012 Paralympic Games, she held fifteen world records and thirty-four American records. Two years later a devastating fall severely damaged her left arm, yet Mallory refused to give up. After two reconstructive surgeries and extended rehab, she won two golds and a silver at the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships. And perhaps most significantly, she found confidence, independence, and persevering love as she walked down the aisle on her wedding day.

Mallory’s extraordinary resilience and uncompromising commitment to excellence are rooted in her resolve, perseverance, and sheer grit. In this remarkable new book, Mallory shares the lessons she learned by pushing past every obstacle, expectation, and limitation that stood in her way, including the need to:

  • redefine limitations;
  • remember that healing is not chronological;
  • be willing to fail;
  • and embrace your comeback.

Mallory’s story reminds us that whatever circumstances we face, we have the capacity to face down whatever challenges, labels, or difficulties confront us–and to do so on our own terms.

About the Author:

Kirsten Fichter is a twenty-something Christian writer who loves being the wife to her favorite person ever, mommy to two precious blessings, a piano enthusiast, a dragon buff, a serious bookworm, and an INFP synesthete. Fairytales have always fascinated her, and she has made it her goal to rewrite as many as possible and become known as the "Grimm Dickens" (i.e. mixing Grimm fairytales with a Dickens style). She is present in many online circles under the name "Kiri Liz" if you care about things like that. As you read this, she'll be somewhere under a maple tree - trying very hard to finish the seventeen and a half other stories she unwisely started all at once.

Back to the Burgh and Beyond ~ Review with Giveaway

Back to the Burgh and Beyond
The Owl's Nest Mysteries #1
By C.S. McDonald
Read by Maren Swenson Waxenberg

Alexa Owl has returned to Pittsburgh (the Burgh) following her divorce, which ended amicably. She's back and starting a new business putting her fashion and sewing skills to use in The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe

Everything is simply perfect until she has a visitor from the past enter her shop. And this visitor isn't from her past but from the building that now houses her business. Detective Bobby Starr needs Alexa's help to help him solve a murder case from his past - a murder he didn't solve while he was alive. Bobby's future in the Guardian Angel Squad is riding on this and they only have days to solve this cold case.

How do you solve a case that is more than 60 years old? Go back to 1953 when the case isn't yet cold. 1953 has many disadvantages - the first being a total lack of technology. I mean how is a girl supposed to do research without the web?

Back to the Burgh and Beyond is a fun read, or in my case, listen. This isn't a long book as it is just under 6 hours and the narration by Maren Swenson Waxenberg works well with this book. The story is definitely concluded when the end comes but it in no way feels as if it is a standalone title as there are most definitely some threads that were not tied off. The cast of characters blends well and they have a few personality quirks that give them an added depth. On a whole, the characters are interesting and believable. For those who like diversity of lifestyles in their reading, you do have it in this book though it isn't a major focal point.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

*Of note there is a bit of drinking both in the past and the present, and smoking in the past, so if you object to this type of behavior in your reading you are forewarned.

Meet Alexa Owl. She's returned home to Pittsburgh after a divorce to start a new life and a new business, The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe. Much to her surprise, she's getting more than she ever bargained for: Detective Bobby Starr, and he's no ordinary sleuth. Bobby is an angel who's returned to Earth in hopes of earning his way into the Guardian Angel Squad. He's been sent by none other than Saint Pete to acquire Alexa’s help to solve three cold case murders he left behind. Except, here’s the catch: he’s only been allotted four days to solve the first case! How in heaven’s name is she supposed to do that? Alexa is a professional seamstress—not a detective. Bobby insists the only way to solve the first case is to return to 1953, and Alexa’s not in love with that idea at all!
