The Bleikovat Event
The Cairns of Sainctuarie #1
By Hawk MacKinney

The Bleikovat Event is about to forever alter the Murian world as they know it. Senseless war has come and none who oppose subjugation are going to be allowed to live. The Feldovats are slowly dying beneath the cruel forward advance of the Green Dragon forces of Bleikovia. With few options, Etkaa consort of Celo Klarvkon makes a decision as he lays dying from a deadly poison. Going against tradition she determines that those few remaining must turn into the treacherous wintery mountains - their only hope to survive the Dragon forces. But before leaving anything and everything of value is turned to ash thwarting the objective of this invasion.

As the dangers and losses continue to mount Etkaa stands strong becoming more than any woman among her people has ever dreamed of. Named Regentkaa she is the new face of hope for her people as they continue on into an unknown future. A future that will involve more sacrifice, more duty, and more heart than she has ever before been called upon giving.

The Bkeikovat Event is the first volume in The Cairns of Sanctuarie series and it is set in a world that visually is different from ours in coloring and has two suns instead of one. But in other ways it is similar - it is a world at war and it is subject to the whims of nature. And when I say it is a world at war this is the main focal point of the whole book. Defeating the Feldovats becomes an obsession for the Dragons and their Overseers an obsession that could well destroy them too. And one woman's strength of will may be the only thing capable of saving them.

As a whole, this was a fairly interesting book. At times the battles seemed to drag and the endless arguing over what to do next reminded me of political wrangling over some word or phrasing in a bill being presented in Congress. Some of the words used are not ones that this reader is used to but there is a glossary of terms located at the end of the book to help out. This is most definitely a book for fans of Science or Fantasy Fiction and not someone looking for a Cozy Mystery or a Gentle Read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Book Description:

From a rocky outcrop a battle-widowed Etkaa, gazed down at the death and upheaval. Rancid green Murian blood stenched the dusklit breezes from the haze-dimmed river marshlands. Nothing has been spared by the Green Dragon forces of Bleikovia. In skirmishes along the Feldon River, Etkaa’s mate is fatally wounded with deadly selvon poison. Through a gruesome mountain trek of icy blizzards, they elude the Green Dragon. The battered starving Feldovats reach the coast at Eedov City only to be confronted by their implacable enemy determined to destroy the remaining Klarvkon rabble. Taking passage on crowded Maalon freighters, the refugees escape toward a new life among their Maalon hosts. Enraged Bleikovats move against the Klarvkons, bringing indiscriminate bloodshed. War once again surfaces, as it did in the muddy filth along the Feldon River of Malfesov, and becomes a different kind of war.

Book TitleThe Nutcracker Conspiracy (A Thorny Rose Mystery #4) by Lauren Carr
Category:  Adult Fiction (18 +),  388 pages
Genre:  Mystery
Publisher:  Acorn Book Services
Release date:   January 30, 2020
Content Rating:  PG-13 (Lauren Carr's books are murder mysteries, so there are murders involved. Occasionally, a murder will happen on stage. There is sexual content, but always behind closed doors. Some mild swearing (a hell or a damn few and far between). No F-bombs!

Book Description:

Three years ago, the nation gasped in horror when the President of the United States barely escaped an assassination attempt that left two dead—the vice president’s wife and the attempted assassin.  Even after numerous investigations proved otherwise, conspiracy theorists argue that the assassin was acting on orders from the CIA, FBI, and every federal agency within a hundred miles of the capital.

Aspiring Author Dean Conway is the last person Lieutenant Commander Murphy Thornton wants to spend his Saturday afternoon when they end up at the same wedding reception table. While their wives tend to bridesmaid duties, Murphy is trapped listening to Dean’s latest work-in-project—completing the manuscript of an investigative journalist who’d disappeared months earlier.

“She was number twelve,” Dean says.

“Twelve?” Murphy asks.

“Twelve witnesses connected to or investigating The Nutcracker shooting have died either in an accident or suicide.”

Two days later, Dean dies suddenly―but not before sending a text message to Murphy:

 “13”

"The plot was original, fresh and fast-paced in spite of the "traditional elements" employed which can normally be found in any other thriller of this genre. The USP of this story would be its unpredictability. When you think you have it all guessed up, the plot would change its course keeping you hooked. There were a lot of suspense twists and turns that kept the momentum up. Needless to say, the writing was simply perfect. One thing that writer needs to be lauded for is the humor she inculcated in the book. Minus those humorous parts, the book would have been one serious read." - Reviewer: Book and Ink

Book Description:
Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a townhome outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper, had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to shift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?

"Mysteries, murder, danger, and memories that threatens their lives keeps the action and suspense at a high level and even when the answers are found, it left me wanting more." - Review by Sherry Fundin of Fundinmental

Book Description:

After ten months of marital bliss, Jessica Faraday and Murphy Thornton are still discovering and adjusting to their life together. Settled in their new home, everything appears to be perfect … except in the middle of the night when, in the darkest shadows of her subconscious, a deep secret from Jessica’s past creeps to the surface to make her strikeout at Murphy.

When investigative journalist Dallas Walker tells the couple about her latest case, known as the Pine Bridge Massacre, they realize Jessica may have witnessed the murder of a family while visiting family at the winery near-by, and suppressed the memory.

Determined to uncover the truth and find justice for the murder victims, Jessica and Murphy return to the scene of the crime with Dallas Walker, a spunky bull-headed Texan. Can this family reunion bring closure for a community touched by tragedy or will this prickly get-together bring an end to the Thorny Rose couple?

When Natalie ends up dead and Murphy goes missing, the Thorny Rose detectives must peel back the layers of Natalie Stepford’s life to discover that the pursuit of perfection can be deadly.

Her Rocky
Mountain Hope by Mindy ObenhausHer Rocky Mountain Hope
Rocky Mountain Heroes #5
By Mindy Obenhaus

Daniel Stephens is about to see his dream become a reality - a camp for young cancer patients that will give them a chance to just forget their illness for a couple of weeks. With the need for outside funds, Daniel needs to impress Blythe McDonald from the Ridley Foundation. Unfortunately, his first face-to-face comes when he isn't ready for her. Can he improve on his less than stellar first impression? He certainly hopes so or his camp may not have a second year.

Blythe McDonald is a no-nonsense type and she is less than impressed by Daniel Stephens. Unless he shows a marked change she can't give approval for another year of funding for Camp Sneffels. She knows the disappointment she experienced as a young girl and doesn't want the same for any young person staying at Sneffels. When a staffing shortage occurs she volunteers to fill in the lack and to more closely observe just how the camp and its less than professional director work out. There is just one problem with her plan - she plays everything safe and the planned activities are anything but.

Can Blythe overcome her fears to see just what she has been missing? Or will her fears keep her from becoming all she could be? Dan has always been about the adventure and wants to bring the freedom it offers to young people who are trapped by their illness. He knows what cancer does as his mother went through it. When he shared his passion with his mother she enjoyed it and he just knew that he was meant to share this joy, this freedom with others.

This is the fifth book in the Rocky Mountain Heroes series which follows the Stephens family and Ouray, Colorado. Each book can be read as a standalone title or in its series order. This has a contemporary setting and is a clean read. And the main focus of this book is trust. Can one trust that someone will be there for them? And what determines a person's worth when it comes to love? Overall this was a good easy read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion all thoughts expressed are my own.

An Uncommon Woman ~ Review

An Uncommon Woman
By Laura Frantz

Tessa Swan has had a life of toil and work yet she dreams about what a life overmountain would be like? A life where she would live the life of a lady rather than one in constant worry over Indian attacks and hard daily work. She has no overriding concern that she is not yet married. Though her mother and Aunt Hester are concerned about the sad lack of marital bliss among the Swan offspring but women are few in the western Virginia frontier, Tessa isn't moved to encourage any man to seek her hand.

Clay Tygart is a most unusual man, he is the new colonel of Fort Tygart and his younger years were spent raised by the Lenape Indians so that when he was "ransomed" he was considered half red. But the skills he learned while living as a son among the Lenape make him a perfect choice to be on the Virginian frontier to stand against them. But as Clay makes his way to his new posting he takes possession of a young woman who, like him, spent years among the Indians and is believed to have originally been from the area of Fort Tygart.

When Clay brings his redeemed captive to Swan Station (the home of the Swan family) she is immediately recognized as Keturah Braam - Tessa's friend who was more of a sister to her until the day she was stolen away. Keturah has forgotten who she once was - speaking as Tessa phrases it  "Indian". But not all among the Swan's are happy to see Keturah - eldest brother Jasper has deep-seated hostility towards any with Indian ties.

Tessa has never had her head turned by any man but for some reason, Colonel Tygart has at the very least caught her eye. Why this should be she isn't sure. And she is unsure of the Colonel's feelings as he seems to at times ignore and others give her special attention. But when the ever-increasing signs of danger come to pass and the Swans are caught up in it Clay must confront his past and do what he can to rescue Tessa.

This book is set in 1770 a few years before the American Revolution when the wilds of this land were not far beyond the eastern coastline. Treaties were made promising to not further encroach upon Indian lands but were so phrased so that the treaties could easily be broken while not technically breaking them. Unrest is their neighbor and unfortunately, it is with good reason. Both sides have exasperated the already strained relations that has all too easily boiled over into violence and bloodshed. This is the world Tessa wants to escape from - a world that has cost her her father and her friend.

Those who love Early American / Colonial American historical fiction will enjoy this newest offering from Laura Frantz. The characters are easily connected with and one is given a view from multiple viewpoints though Tessa and Clay's are the most drawn upon. The pacing isn't rushed but neither does it drag so one can quite easily be drawn in for a long weekend of reading. I would recommend this book as an excellent option if you are in a book club and are in search of clean-reading historical romance.

I was provided a  complimentary copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Unflinching and plainspoken, Tessa Swan is not your typical eighteenth-century woman. Born and bred on the western Virginia frontier along with her five brothers, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Quiet and courageous, Clay Tygart is not your typical eighteenth-century man. Raised by Lenape Indians, he returns a hero from the Seven Years' War to the fort that bears his name, bringing with him Tessa's long-lost friend, Keturah, a redeemed Indian captive like himself.

Determined to avoid any romantic entanglements as fort commander, Clay remains aloof whenever he encounters the lovely Tessa. But when she is taken captive by the tribe Clay left, his hand--and heart--are forced, leading to one very private and one very public reckoning.

End Game ~ Review

End Game
Capital Intrigue #1
By Rachel Dylan

When FBI Special Agent Bailey Ryan gets a late-night call she never expected that she would be working a case in partnership with NCIS. But the murder of a civilian and a Navy SEAL with the same apparent MO has them working against the clock in case they have a serial or spree killer operating in the DC area.

NCIS Special Agent Marco Agostini isn't keen on the idea of having to work with the FBI but Bailey Ryan seems more than willing to play nice in the joint investigation. And with her legal background, she brings more attention to the paper detail than his fieldwork tendencies normally allow.

As evidence becomes available it seemingly points to another Navy SEAL as the murderer. But his JAG lawyer isn't convinced by the evidence. Bailey and Marco aren't willing to close the case just yet but the evidence is damaging.

When more people begin dying and someone targets the joint investigative team, Bailey, Marco and the rest of the team suspect something bigger is going on. But without the evidence to point them where to look next, they are running out of time and potential suspects.

End Game is the first book in the Capital Intrigue series and it continually adds layers to the story as each clue, piece of evidence and attack brings the danger closer to home.  If you love suspense that doesn't give away its secrets early on in the book this is one you will want to pick up. There are plenty of potential traitors or people hiding something but does it have any bearing on their case? These are the questions that they have to figure out.

This book is definitely in the stay-up-all-night page-turner category so give yourself plenty of time because you won't want to put this one down once you pick it up. The characters are a good blend and work well together and have an on-page presence that doesn't feel forced or thrown together. These are people that you could meet in your day-to-day life and connect with. The pacing is good with no dragging. I would most definitely want to revisit any of these characters in future books. This is a good series debut that doesn't leave you hanging as the story is complete in itself.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
When elite members of the military are murdered on the streets of Washington, DC, FBI Special Agent Bailey Ryan and NCIS Special Agent Marco Agostini must work together to bring the perpetrator to justice. Unfortunately, all evidence points to a Navy SEAL sniper whom Bailey refuses to believe is guilty.

When Bailey and Marco start to connect the dots between the victims, including a link to a powerful defense contractor, they wonder if there's a deeper cover-up at play. Then Bailey is targeted, and it becomes clear that someone is willing to kill to keep their dark secrets.

With the stakes getting higher by the moment in a twisted conspiracy, there's a rush against the clock to determine whom they can really trust. As allies turn to enemies, the biggest secret yet to be uncovered could be the end of all of them.

The Way of the Brave ~ Review

The Way of the Brave
Global Search and Rescue #1
By Susan May Warren

Orion Starr is angry and he lays the blame squarely on God - everyone he's ever cared about has been taken from him. And his last mission ended his career and left members of his team damaged or lost. He's hidden himself away in Alaska in the shadow of Denali. But Hamilton (Ham) Jones is determined to recruit him to rescue team and he is in Alaska to pitch his company one more time.

Jenny Calhoun has been living with guilt about how the mission in Afghanistan went so wrong and she squarely puts the blame on herself and her faulty assessment of their asset. Orion and his team paid the price for her mistake. She wants to forget her past but she just can't. And when she and her friends Aria and Sasha set out to conquer Denali she had no idea just how quickly everything would go wrong.

Orion is convinced that Jenny is the woman he fell in love with in Afghanistan just before everything went wrong. She disappeared from his life and he hasn't seen her since. But this woman doesn't seem to know him but he can't get her out of his mind and when she and her climbing group go missing Orion has to search for her. But Denali is an unpredictable presence that can turn deadly in mere moments and time is against them.

The Way of the Brave is the first book in a new series and it brings the action to the reader in a most impressive way. All the main characters are hurting and dealing with it in different ways - for some their secret pains are revealed but not all (this is after all this is the first book in the series). There is a political thread that runs through this story that those who have read the author's previous series (Montana Marshalls) will be familiar with. Senator Isaac White is running for President and he has connections that Orion and Ham need to learn about a missing former teammate, They have a man who may be in trouble and they need White's help to be on the QT as there are concerns about a rogue government element being involved. So if you like an edge of your seat quality to your reading with a double dose of romance, some intrigue and a whole mess of secrets you will most likely be in anxious wait for what happens next.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Former pararescue jumper Orion Starr is haunted by the memory of a rescue gone wrong. He may be living alone in Alaska now, but the pain of his failure–and his injuries–has followed him there from Afghanistan. He has no desire to join Hamilton Jones’s elite rescue team, but he also can’t shirk his duty when the call comes in to rescue three lost climbers on Denali.

Former CIA profiler and psychiatrist Jenny Calhoun’s yearly extreme challenge with her best friends is her only escape from the guilt that has sunk its claws into her. As a consultant during a top-secret mission to root out the Taliban, she green-lighted an operation that ended in ambush and lives lost. When her cathartic climb on Denali turns deadly, she’ll be forced to trust her life and the lives of her friends to the most dangerous of heroes–the man she nearly killed.

Orion and Jenny will have to put their wounds behind them to save their friends...and their hearts.

Ruby Jane ~ Review

Ruby Jane
Montana Marshalls #5
By Sasan May Warren

Ruby Jane is the conclusion to the 5-book Marshall family saga. The previous book Ford left us with York Newgate being taken away by the CIA and her missing boss murdered. Everyone believes that York died in a fiery car crash but RJ can't accept that the man she loved is dead - she alone believes that he is still alive. But why he hasn't reached out to her has her worried. And even more troubling why was her boss Sophia Randall murdered and just how does it tie into RJ's nearly fatal trip to Russia?

Mack Jones has no idea where he came from or how he ended up in the rough shape he is in. He just knows he needs to stay under the radar of the local PD. He feels that something in his past isn't all it should be and that he may not be a good person. His new employer offers him a place to start over and hope that a new beginning is possible. But Mack has something lurking in the back of his mind something that scares him. But when Mack becomes a hero he is about to come face-to-face with his past and if he doesn't remember who he is the danger that has been hunting him may find him yet again.

Ruby Jane is surprised when she catches an interview of some she is sure is York. Determined to discover what happened she is more than a little surprised when the man she was sure was York doesn't seem to recognize her and in fact, seems to be well established in the small town she finds herself in. Is this lumberjack like man York or is it the twin everyone is supposed to have? And if this is York does she have the right to destroy his chance at a fresh start - a life without the guilt and pain of the past?

As all the storylines from the series begin to come together it soon becomes apparent that someone may not survive - the question is whether or not one of the Marshall siblings will be among the fallen. Now if you have not yet read the previous 4 Montana Marshall books it is an absolute must as they must be read in order before taking on Ruby Jane. Each builds upon the previous title. An assassination attempt. A bombing. An attack. Election meddling. The Russian mafia. A fire. A kidnapping. A traitor. And a family smack dab in the middle of everything.

The trip to the climax will leave you on the edge of your seat as it unfolds. And be prepared for anything it may be the only way that you'll survive.

I received a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
She loved...and lost.
Ruby Jane never thought she'd meet the man of her dreams while running from the police in Russia. That he'd steal her heart on a train to Siberia. But loving a former CIA officer comes with a price...a life of danger. A life of high stakes.
A life where he simply disappears...
He has no memory of the man he was.
Mack Jones has no memory of his past...just the dark sense that he is hiding. And, he wants to stay that way. Mack likes the life he's built in a small tourist town, tucked away beyond the mountains, and has no desire to dig around in the gray areas of his memory.
When his place of business catches fire and Mack rescues the owner, he makes the news, which of course alerts the past he's hoping to outrun.
The only person who can help him is a mysterious woman he doesn't remember.
But a woman he desperately needs.
The surprising, thrilling conclusion to the Montana Marshall series.
