While the City Sleeps ~ Review

While the City Sleeps
The Women of Midtown #1
By Elizabeth Camden

Katherine Schneider is a woman dentist working the late-night shift in New York City. When a patient begins rambling while under the effects of nitrous oxide, she thinks little of it. But when something the patient said is linked to the mafia, Katherine finds herself caught up in unexpected danger.

Lieutenant Jonathan Birch is determined to keep the mafia where it belongs - out of his beat. For the last couple of years, he's escorted Katherine home when her shift ends and, on occasion, offering her baked goods that can't be found in any bakery. This friendship causes Katherine to seek him out when she fears her late-night patient may have been involved in something sinister.

While the City Sleeps is the first book in the Women of Midtown series. This book is set during the Gilded Age, 1913 New York City. I like the idea behind the title of this book - While the City Sleeps describes the people who work during the night, the people who keep the city running through their work during the night. People that most aren't even aware exist.

This book is a Historical Romance, but there is also a mystery that runs through it. There is more than one mystery. The one is the threat to the city. The other involves Lieutenant Birch; who is he?  Jonathan is very protective of his past, offering little when questioned. And yet, we get glimpses of his thoughts and concerns about his secrets and deception.

This book is attention-grabbing with the way the story unfolds. The author makes it come alive with a seamless blend of setting, characters, and historical facts. I, for one, didn't know that the American Dental Association was well-established in 1913. I love it when I can learn facts like this while being entertained. And a mansard roof was mentioned, so guess who did a search for pictures to see examples?  But if all you want is an enjoyable read that includes historical fiction and a touch of romance, you will enjoy this new series debut.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Heart of a Royal ~ Review

Heart of a Royal
Daughters of Peverell #1
By Hannah Currie

Heart of a Royal is a lovely book and perfect for Valentine's. For more than 17 years, Mackenna (Kenna) Sparrow has lived the life of a princess. When Princess Alina's mother died shortly after her birth, Kenna was raised alongside her when her mother stepped in to help care for the motherless baby. But though she has lived the life of a royal, Kenna knows that it will all end when Alina marries.

But what Kenna never knew was just how much certain people resented her, though most adored her. And with her final days living as a royal coming to an end, she is torn by her feelings. Her friendships with Princess Alina and Prince Thoraben are seemingly at an end. The fact of which is more painful than she had expected. What does a nearly 18-year-old former princess's companion do for the rest of her life? With questions and no answers in sight, she needs to untangle what she does and doesn't know about those closest to her before she can move forward into her new life as a commoner.

This is the first book in the Daughters of Peverell series, and my goodness, it is filled with secrets and dangers. The land is under threat from rebels and has been to Kenna's knowledge all her life and even before. In fact, a former friend was even expelled from the kingdom because of her rebellious leanings and refusal to see the error of her beliefs! With danger so close, there are fears that Kenna could be a target because of her close association with the royals.

But there is so much more to the story than what first appears, and it is interesting to see how everything unfolds. And believe me, there is a real doozie of a twist. There are actually a couple of twists that reveal some interesting facts about the various characters. It is also interesting how one decision can change the course of a life or even a kingdom. After reading this book, I really need to know what comes next. This book ends not on a cliffhanger, but it is obvious that there is so much more to the story. Overall this is a sweet read and one that explores family, responsibility, and truth. I feel that this is a clean read for teens looking for an alternative to the normal romance that is readily available today.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Brought to the palace as a newborn, the royal life bestowed upon Mackenna Sparrow was never meant to last forever.

With Princess Alina engaged to be married, Mackenna's presence as a companion is no longer required. And, like it or not, she must return to the birthright that should have been hers - that of a commoner. But not everyone at the palace wants her gone.

When the truths she’s based her life on start crumbling as fast as her future, will she find the courage to trust both herself and the prince she’s fallen in love with?

The Divine Proverb of Streusel ~ Review

The Divine Proverb of Streusel
By Sara Brunsvold

When Nikki Werner's parents broke up, she was hurt. But when her father remarried soon afterward, her world shattered. And she leaves everyone and everything behind, seeking refuge in the one place she least expected - her father's childhood home, a place she hadn't visited in more than a decade.

But in the act of trying to hide from her pain and clinging to her bitterness, she's caused a rift with the one man she thought she'd spend all her tomorrows with. This is a summer of discovery for Nikki. Discovering where she came from and the factors that shaped her father into the person he became.

I liked the recipes that Nikki discovered in an old notebook. Recipes for both food and for living. This was a really good book - I wasn't sure what to expect as it dealt with the fallout of a failed, broken marriage as seen through the eyes of an adult daughter. But it is more than that. It is a story of understanding, forgiveness, love, and loss. Of finding oneself where you are.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Shaken by her parents' divorce and discouraged by the growing chasm between herself and her serious boyfriend, Nikki Werner seeks solace at her uncle's farm in a small Missouri hamlet. She'll spend the summer there, picking up the pieces of her shattered present so she can plan a better future. But what awaits her at the ancestral farm is a past she barely knows.

Among her late grandmother's belongings, Nikki finds an old notebook filled with handwritten German recipes and wise sayings pulled from the book of Proverbs. With each recipe she makes, she invites locals to the family table to hear their stories about the town's history, her ancestors--and her estranged father.

What started as a cathartic way to connect to her heritage soon becomes the means through which she learns how the women before her endured--with the help of their cooking prowess. Nikki realizes how delicious streusel with a healthy dollop of faith can serve as a guide to heal wounds of the past.

Double Take ~ Review

Double Take
Lake City Heroes #1
By Lynette Eason

Eighteen months ago, Lainie Jackson survived her ex-fiancé's murder attempt; he didn't. But now someone is trying to convince her otherwise. Or else she is losing her mind. And whoever it is seems intent on finishing what Adam failed to do. But she knows Adam died. She was there and tried to save his life.

Detective James Cross wants to be anywhere other than the hospital where he is now. But the hostage situation he was just involved in made a trip there an order. What's worse, his sister's best friend, Lainie, is the PA assigned to take care of him. And letting his family know that he's home and in the hospital will not be pretty.

What follows is an intense page-turning read. Danger is seemingly just around the corner and keeping a very close eye on Lainie. And one wrong move could make the killer strike sooner.

Double Take is the first book in Lynette Eason's new Lake City Heroes series, and believe me when I say if you want to have an excuse to avoid certain obligations, this is the book you're looking for. (And, yes, I know Star Wars and Lynette Eason don't fall into the same genre, but it works.) I had an idea of where the book was going, and, in all honesty, I was only partially right. Just promise me you will not skip ahead because that will ruin everything, and this is a page-turner for a reason. In my opinion, this is one book you don't want to miss.

About the Book:

Detective James Cross has been honorably discharged from the Army Criminal Investigation Division due to wounds sustained when an IED blew up near him. Now with the Lake City Police Department, he's rooming with this good buddy and partner, Cole, while he figures out his family dynamics.

Physician Assistant Lainie Jackson is eighteen months out from an attempted murder perpetrated by her ex, which ended when she managed to grab the weapon and shoot him. When he appears to have survived and is back to finish the job he started, Lainie insists it's not possible. But someone keeps trying to kill her, and she keeps seeing his face.

Together, Lainie and James must work together to find out who, exactly, is after her and why he wants her dead. And failure is not an option.

USA Today bestselling author Lynette Eason will leave you breathless with this fast-paced first book in a brand-new series.

Anyone who has read any of Colleen Coble's Contemporary Romantic Suspense books in the past will not be disappointed in this newest title. There are layers that must be peeled back to discover the truth - a truth that has been hidden for nearly a lifetime. And at the root of everything is family - the ties that bind us together and the secrets that can tear us apart. This is reads as a standalone book but it could easily become a series starter. The Way You Love Me ~ Review

The Way You Love Me
Fox Bakery #3
By Michelle Sass Aleckson

Oliver Fox left home years ago and never thought he'd be back. But to keep custody of his five-year-old daughter, he needs to return to Deep Haven. But facing his past and the mistakes he's made may be the most difficult thing he's ever done.

Lena Larson is Deep Haven's only veterinarian, and when an accident makes the animal shelter unusable, she opens her home to them. Oliver Fox's return just adds to Lena's daily stress. The last thing she needs is a daily reminder of her greatest embarrassment.

But to save what they most desire may involve Lena and Oliver letting go of the past and its pain and embracing a future that neither of could have seen. And there may be a fainting goat involved.

This is the third book in the Fox Bakery series which sees the Fox grandchildren returning to Deep Haven and facing the pain that drove them away. Leave doesn't leave the hurt or the mistakes behind, not when they've shaped your life. Sometimes the only way to heal is to return home and face it head on with those you love by your side. And sometimes you need to clear the air and not hide what you are truly feeling and yet balance it by not causing the issue to grow bigger. As Oliver told Lena she needed to both laugh more and get angry, she needed people to see the real her. Something I'm sure many of us are guilty of - wearing a mask. This was a book that offered depth while entertaining in a perfect blend.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Faith. Forgiveness. A future they never imagined. It’s time for a fresh start for the Fox family.

Oliver Fox never thought he’d step foot in Deep Haven again—not with the ghosts he left behind. But when the custody battle for his beloved daughter hinges on his ability to face his past, he returns to Deep Haven and dives back into the fray of his mistakes…starting with the girl next door.

Veterinarian Lena Larson has her hands full with the town’s pets, including a shelter for lost animals. The last thing she needs is the arrival of the man who once shattered her heart. But back he is, and with an adorable daughter…and the need to start over. She has no intention of letting him back into her life. But when her shelter is destroyed, Lena finds herself with a garage full of homeless animals—and an unlikely ally in Oliver. Together, they embark on a mission to find homes for the abandoned animals, and help Oliver make peace with his past.

But it’s not easy to come home. Not everyone believes Oliver has changed, and their doubt could keep him from retaining custody of his daughter. More, Lena has ghosts of her own, and they’ve returned to haunt her. If she isn’t careful, they might even have the power to destroy the surprising happy ending she never saw coming.

Discover this captivating story of healing, forgiveness, and the transformative power of second chances.

The Foxhole Victory Tour ~ Review

The Foxhole Victory Tour
By Amy Lynn Green

The Foxhole Victory Tour's cover is gorgeous and one would suppose from both the covet  and the title that this is a book about entertain the troops. And you would partially correct. The vast majority of the story revolves around a group of entertainers who are doing just this.

But there is so much more to the story. We are first introduced to Maggie McCleod and
Catherine Duquette who couldn't be more different from one another. Other than the fact that they both performing with an all-girl wartime orchestra. When an opportunity arises both leave what they know behind for a chance to be part of the USO. Maggie's reasoning is because her unbridled tongue has again gotten her into trouble. Catherine to leave the demands of her parents behind and to learn what happened to the man she had been writing to.

But Maggie and Catherine are just a portion of the group they are performing with. Each carries a secret pain that taking part in this tour might alleviate in some small way. Some pains are more obvious than others but each has been shaped by it.

Though they are there for entertaining the troops, they are in a war zone and in as much danger as those serving in the army.

I have never read a book before that centered around the USO and the role they played during WW2, or any war. I found it fascinating. One so often hears about them and what they did but never the day-to-day danger they found themselves. Probably the opening of the classic movie White Christmas is the closest I've come to anything touching on the dangers they faced.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in WW2 or the various roles women played during it. This book was eye opening to me as a reader. And it definitely was an experience that allowed both Maggie and Catherine (and the other tour members) a chance to grow, to become better people. I will admit there were a couple characters in the beginning I was unsure of, but learning their story and watching them learn and grow proved first impressions shouldn't be your one and only impression. The was and is an excellent read, worth a reread at a later date, in my opinion.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

The Lily of Ludgate Hill ~ Review

The Lily of Ludgate Hill
Belles of London #3
By Mimi Matthews

Lady Anne Deveril may have captured the attention and heart of Mr. Felix Hart when she was younger. But she knows nothing he said or did all those years ago meant anything, but still, she can't abide him giving her hope of a future she hasn't yet achieved. Nearing a permanent place on the spinster shelf, she finds herself dressed in mourning for the last six years due to her mother's dictates. Wearing black has made her noticed in society and not in a good way, and it forced her to put away any thoughts of love or marriage. If only Felix, aka Hart, would find someone else to tempt with dreams of the past.

Felix Hartford, Hart to his friends and family, has never found anyone like Lady Anne. For some reason, she has captured his notice and his heart. When she comes to him seeking his assistance, he agrees with one stipulation, and it is a doozie. She must attend his grandfather's holiday house party and leave all her black mourning clothes at home. What's worse he actually suggested a most inappropriate color to wear - RED!

Considered by many to be a lazy charmer and a gadabout, Hart actually was hiding a secret. Well, more than one, but if discovered, they would have broken his grandfather's heart and ruined his uncle. And London society being what it was, some things are bound to be discovered, sort of. This leads to some misunderstandings, of course, which is both good and bad.

Anne and her mother are into spiritualism, which, though somewhat popular, is also frowned upon by polite society, especially by Hart's uncle. Old family friendships notwithstanding. But this is the very thing that Anne uses to "rescue" her friend. A friend whom everyone else is convinced is not in need of rescue. But Anne can't be convinced that dear Julia married of her own free will. And a rescue or visit must be attempted. But she'll have to persuade her mother that a journey must be taken, and here is where Hart and that favor she needs comes into play. Lies and webs

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. Some scenes may leave shaking your head. I have to admit at the beginning I much preferred Felix to Anne. One can see how Anne became the way she was, but there is more to it than can be seen by an outside observer. And then there is Felix who has his own family issues he's dealing with. I think when it comes down it, both Anne and Felix are alone in their struggle to find control while fulfilling what they feel is a duty to protect. And for both there is a great personal cost involved. But is it noble or foolish? That my fellow reader is for you to decide.

This was the first book I've read by Mimi Matthews, and I am looking forward to reading the previous two books in this series, the Belles of London. That being said, I do think this book can be read as a standalone title.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
A BookBub Best Romance of Winter 2024!

Fortune favors the bold—but is a confirmed spinster daring enough to loosen the reins and accept a favor from the wicked gentleman who haunts her dreams?

Lady Anne Deveril doesn’t spook easily. A woman of lofty social standing known for her glacial beauty and starchy opinions, she’s the unofficial leader of her small group of equestriennes. Since her mother’s devastating plunge into mourning six years ago, Anne voluntarily renounced any fanciful notions of love and marriage. And yet, when
fate puts Anne back into the entirely too enticing path of Mr. Felix Hartford, she’s tempted to run…right into his arms.

No one understands why Lady Anne withdrew into the shadows of society, Hart least of all. The youthful torch he once held for her has long since cooled. Or so he keeps telling himself. But now Anne needs a favor to help a friend. Hart will play along with her little ruse—on the condition that Anne attend a holiday house party at his grandfather’s
country estate. No more mourning clothes. No more barriers. Only the two of them, unrequited feelings at last laid bare.

The Seamstress of Acadie ~ Review

The Seamstress of Acadie
By Laura Frantz

The Acadians' history is a tragic one that finds them caught in a war between the British and the French. And it is in the midst of this conflict that The Seamstress of Acadie is set. Sylvie Galant works as a seamstress for the French fort, sewing shirts for the French soldiers. But all too soon her skills are no longer used as the British threat to Acadians becomes more with each passing day.

When her brother warns that soon all they hold will be seized becomes the truth, Sylvie's life is forever altered. But through it all she uses her needle to forge a new life with what little remains of the old.

The Seamstress of Acadie is a tragic story of lives torn apart because of hate and prejudice. The Acadians French ties have them caught in the middle of a conflict between the British and the French. And though they pledge no loyalty to either, claiming neutrality, they are accused treachery and revolution. The British lies soon drive them forcibly from their homes. Families are torn apart and the conditions aboard the ships a cruelty. Loss of life is extreme before events force them into a new existence in Virginia. But this new land views them with distrust, offering hate, fear, and ridicule while they suffer from the losses they cannot easily forgot, not that they want to.

But there are moments of hope for the future and it is to this promise that Sylvie eventually ties all her hopes and dreams. Laura Frantz creates characters who draw one into their story. One feels Sylvie's pain. One hopes with Major Blackburn that he will succeed in providing a home for the displaced Acadians. Set in Pre-Revolutionary America this a perfect read for those who enjoy Historical Fiction set in the New World. As 1754 is drawing to a close, tensions between the French and the British on Canada's Acadian shore are reaching a fever pitch. Seamstress Sylvie Galant and her family--French-speaking Acadians wishing to remain neutral--are caught in the middle, their land positioned between two forts flying rival flags. Amid preparations for the celebration of Noël, the talk is of unrest, coming war, and William Blackburn, the British Army Ranger raising havoc across North America's borderlands.

As summer takes hold in 1755 and British ships appear on the horizon, Sylvie encounters Blackburn, who warns her of the coming invasion. Rather than participate in the forced removal of the Acadians from their land, he resigns his commission. But that cannot save Sylvie or her kin. Relocated on a ramshackle ship to Virginia, Sylvie struggles to pick up the pieces of her life. When her path crosses once more with William's, they must work through the complex tangle of their shared, shattered past to
navigate the present and forge an enduring future.

PRAISE FOR THE SEAMSTRESS OF ACADIE
 “Frantz’s atmospheric writing is easy to sink into, from the grimness of the
disease-riddled voyage to the ethereal Acadian landscape. While William and
Sylvie’s romance is a slow burn, there’s a rewarding payoff to this tale of second
chances born from tragedy. Frantz’s fans won’t be disappointed.”— Publisher’s
Weekly
 “This book is undoubtedly one of the best books I've ever read. I loved the faith
thread, I loved the light in the darkness theme, I loved the characters, I loved the
hope brimming from almost every page. I loved the growth (through every
struggle and triumph), and I loved the history embedded into each detail.”—
Tasha, The Clean Read Book Club
 “Fantastic story! The beautiful writing engages the reader from the beginning...
Laura Frantz's books are exceptional because they evoke an abundance of
emotions beyond the typical novel. I highly recommend this book to all historical
fiction readers.”— Milena Bookish, Goodreads

All's Fair in Love and Christmas ~ Review

All's Fair in Love and Christmas
By Sarah Monzon

Mackenzie Graham loves her job; she's good at it. Until she has to make a presentation or talk face-to-face with anyone. And now she's up for a promotion that will demand just that. What's worse she's competing against her secret crush.

Jeremy Fletcher has a plan and everything is on track. He's up for promotion at work and he knows his work speaks for itself. And he knows he can get the right Christmas cheer to help him make it a sure thing. There's just one little problem now that he's getting to Mackenzie, he's beginning to realize she's so much more than who she presents to the world.

All's Fair in Love and Christmas is a fun read. Can you ever have too much Christmas?  Mackenzie and Jeremy and their coworkers are about to find out. And there may be a few Christmas cheer fails along the way. This is a contemporary read that focuses on family and allowing life to happen in unexpected ways.  This cute read finds Mackenzie and Jeremy having to rethink just what they expect from life and realizing that sometimes control needs to be relinquished. This is mostly a light read but there are some serious moments that help one understand what shaped these characters into the people they are. This was an easy and for me a quick weekend read,

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Every December two things are guaranteed for graphic designer Mackenzie Graham--Christmas celebrations and the annual promotion at her workplace. Those two things are by no means mutually exclusive. In fact, the better an employee is at harnessing the Christmas spirit, the more likely they'll win the new job. With her social anxiety, Mackenzie never thought she'd be a contender in her company's holiday competition, so how exactly has she found herself dueling her workplace crush with wrapping paper tubes and using tinsel as her weapon of choice for a much-needed raise?

Jeremy Fletcher's life is meticulously planned out, including how to win this year's promotion at work. Not only will the new position fulfill some of his career goals, but the raise will help him as a single guardian to his twin niece and nephew. Jeremy has barely noticed Mackenzie Graham around the office, but now that she's his rival, he can't stop thinking about her. Her quirkiness intrigues him, and he's afraid that if he can't get his head on straight, the job isn't the only thing he'll end up losing to Mackenzie.

'Tis the season for romance, faith, and humor--all wrapped up in this enchanting holiday rom-com from award-winning author Sarah Monzon.

To Capture a Beauty ~ Review

To Capture a Beauty:
A Snow Queen Retelling
Shattered Tales #12
By Kimberly Pearl

Lydia knows she lives in the shadow of her older sister's beauty. And as far as the young men in the area go, she'll always be an afterthought or a distant memory once they catch a glimpse of Rosalee. Even her mother's insistence that Rosales was destined to capture the heart of a man of wealth and prestige showed how inferior Lydia was to her sister. So when a young man stops to actually talk to her and get to know her, she's more than a little surprised and doubtful that his attention will last. And when she learns that he's her father's new apprentice she's pleased at the prospect of more time together.

When Leif meets Lydia on the road to Moonrose, Lydia's family's farm, he's surprised how easily he can converse with her. Their shared interest in plants gives them a point connection as they work together, gathering the herbs and plants her father needs.

But there is danger in the area.  What the danger is no one knows, but young women are disappearing. Finding himself not only an apprentice but an unofficial guard for Lydia, Leif shares with her secrets about plants that he alone knows. Secrets that show her just how affected the area's vegetation is by magic.

When the pair stumble upon an enchanted mirror, they avoid it, but Lydia's brief glimpse reveals something. It showed her heart's desire - perfection. Caught in its siren call, she is tempted to take what it offers perfect unending beauty. Can she withstand its call?

This was a delightful read. Can the unintended rivalry between sisters drive them apart? Lydia's sense of inferiority drives her, damaging her past friendship with her sister. But she is fiercely loyal to her family.

If you are someone who skips prologues, don't as it sets the whole mood and tone for the book. Deep-seated hurt, feelings of unworthiness, and inferiority that must be overcome. This is an excellent twist on the Snow Queen that will leave wanting more. The book was more than a little engaging; it was, in fact, unputdownable! Highly recommended for any reader over the age of 12 years who is looking for a clean reading, fairytale retelling.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
