Hit ~ Review

Hit
By Lorie Ann Grover

Sarah seems to have it made.  A scholarship to Mills College.  A loving family.  A great friend.  And a secret crush. But in an instant it could all come to an end.  And everyone involved with Sarah all too soon realizes what they may lose

Taking place over several days Hit is told through the viewpoints of both Sarah and Mr. Haddings. Which makes for a fuller story - a more complete picture.  This is a story that will appeal to teens and tweens who are, like Sarah, trying to determine what their future should be and how it will look.  Even when everything appears darkest there is hope.

If you have read Lorie's previous books - one can agree with me when I say Lorie is not stuck in a genre when it comes to writing.  But the quality remains high which is one of her draws.

I was provided an uncorrected ARC (advanced review copy) in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
After receiving a scholarship to Mills College, Sarah’s future is clear … until she walks into a poetry class led by Mr. Haddings, a student teacher from the nearby University of Washington. Suddenly, life at UW seems very appealing, and Sarah begins to use her poetry journal to subtly declare her feelings for Mr. Haddings. Convinced he is flirting back, she sets off for school in the rain with a poem in her back pocket—saying how she really feels.
Mr. Haddings has been noticing Sarah’s attention, and he decides to end all speculation that morning. But everything changes when he feels a thud on his front bumper and finds Sarah in the street with blood pooling beneath her.

CSFF Blog Tour September ~ Rebels Day 1

Welcome to the September CSFF Blog Tour
This month our book in Jill Williamson's Rebels
the final book in The Safe Lands trilogy

To start off the tour I want to take a look back at the first two books in the series.
First up Captives
Levi is the favored son of Justin of Elias.  He is to marry for love. He is a hunter.  He can go on scavenging trips to Denver City. And he has earned the respect of his father, something that his younger brothers cannot do no matter how hard they try.  Mason has decided that trying to earn his father's respect and trust is an impossible tasks though he tries his best to please him.  But Omar is determined to win it no matter what the cost, but does he know how much he is going to pay?

The Safe Lands were designed to protect the people from a plague, but what was to be a safety has turned into an even greater danger.  The city is the plague and there is no way to stop it or to save the city without drastic measures.  And Omar and the people of Glenrock may be the Safe Lands last hope.

Omar in an act of betrayal destroys Glenrock and rips Jemma and Levi apart just days before their marriage.  Can Levi find a way to get within the city and free those who have been taken against their will?

The ease of life in the Safe Lands is a powerful draw, but is the loss of their freedom and the chance of becoming infected a reasonable trade?  But the Safe Lands is home to people whose wild ways may have lead to the plague's spread through what was suppose to be a fortress of safety from the plague.

Mason has been put in a position within the Safe Lands where he is able to study the problem of the plague up close.  Can he use the skills he developed in Glenrock and stop the plague?  Can he bring hope where there is none or will it merely be false hope? As Mason struggles to cure the plague and to save the people of Glenrock from forced surrogacy, Levi is working on a plan of escape.  Meanwhile Omar is falling into all that the Safe Lands has to offer in an attempt to hide from his guilt over what went wrong with his grand plan.

Outcasts:
The Captives from Glenrock have taken refuge within the Safe Lands with a group of rebels, but these rebels have goals that are at odds with those that Levi has prioritized for the survivors of Glenrock. After all who cares about the people who call the Safe Lands home?

To Levi's annoyance his brothers Mason and Omar both have cares about the Safe Landers - and Mason may have developed an attraction to the doctor under whom he works.  Mason is determined to find a cure for the disease that afflicts the Safe Landers and Omar.  Meanwhile Omar is determined to make the Safe Landers aware of the true state of their world.

When the rebels demands threaten the safety of those closest to him Levi moves everyone to a new location with the assistance of Zane.  This move gives everyone a glimpse of Papa Eli that had not yet known and adds more to the history of Glenrock.  (Hoping for a prequel - all these little tidbits are just so tempting!!!  Kind of like having a box of your favorite chocolates and knowing you can't have them yet.)

Subterfuge and deception reign supreme in the Safe Lands and a master illusionist is firmly in control. Questions for which there seem to be no answers may be of utmost importance.  What is liberation?  Is it truly the end of life or is it something more sinister.  Can this disease be cured and why is noone allowed access to the data about it?

Mason, Omar, and Shaylinn are determined to make a difference in the Safe Lands, but it may cost them more than they were expecting.  But sometimes doing the right thing is worth the cost even if it means liberation.  And someone is about to pay the ultimate price for freedom....

Destined for Doon ~ Review

Destined for Doon
A Doon Novel 2
By Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon

Ten months have passed since MacKenna left Doon behind, since she left Duncan behind.  But she had a dream of a career on Broadway.  Stardom is now seemingly within her reach when Duncan comes to her with a summons from her BFF Vee. But Duncan refuses to tell her what Vee needs until they are on their way.

Doon is under attack and only Kenna can see the darkness encroaching and encircling Doon.  Time is a luxury that Vee, Kenna, and the princes of Doon don't have if they want to save this village that exists out of time.

But there is unrest in Doon that is threatening Vee's reign as queen.  And there are little issues in her relationship with Jamie that are troubling.

Duncan seems less than thrilled that Kenna is back in Doon (though it has been considerably less than 10 months since she left him behind).  And though she doesn't want to fall for him again she is hurt by his indifference and even coldness at times.  But a broken heart is not easily mended and when a happily ever after is in the balance mending is imperative.

But unless they stop the darkness that is threatening Doon no one will have a happily ever after ever again!

Those who read book 1 Doon will be delighted that Kenna and Duncan have a chance for a second chance.  And we get an opportunity to see how Veronica handles being Queen of Doon with the pressures of everyday ruling added to the threat of utter destruction.  And of course our favorite MacCrae princes are back in all their Doonian glory.

This book has moments of fun especially where some of Kenna and Vee's modern world clothing is concerned.  And if you like a little bit of romance in your life and death struggles against black petunias this is the book for you.  But be warned happy endings don't always work out just how we want them to...

I was provided a copy of the book through the BookLook blogger program in exchange for my honest review.

Book Description

In this sequel to Doon, Mackenna Reid realizes she made a horrible mistake - choosing to follow her dreams of Broadway instead of staying in the enchanted land of Doon. To make everything worse, she's received her Calling - proof she and Duncan are each other's one true love - and it's pure torment, especially when visions of the very alluring Scottish prince appear right before she goes on stage. So when Duncan tells her an ancient curse threatens to overtake Doon and the new queen needs her to return, Kenna doesn't have to think twice. With darkness closing in on all sides, Kenna and Vee must battle a world of nightmares in order to protect the kingdom. But it will take the ultimate test of courage for Kenna to salvage her happily ever after.

CSFF August Blog Tour ~ Merlin's Nightmare Day 3

~ Welcome to the Third and Final Day
of the CSFF August Blog Tour ~

This month's featured book is Merlin's Nightmare
which is the concluding book in The Merlin Spiral series

Merlin's Nightmare
The Merlin Spiral #3
By Robert Treskillard

Merlin has kept his identity a secret.  For years he has hidden his face from the public eye, wearing a mask that covers his scars.  Scars that would reveal his identity to Vortigern should even a whisper touch his ear.

And if Merlin was revealed, Arthur's identity would be revealed as well.  An identity that Arthur is unaware of.  Even his name is hidden from him, as he has been called Artorius for as far back as his memory will take him.

But Arthur and Merlin's safety and indeed all of Britons is about to be threatened in a way that Merlin hoped and prayed would never come. His half-sister Ganieda, known as Morgana, is about to strike, bringing with her, her beloved wolves.  But her wolves are no longer the beasts that hunted Merlin in his youth. These wolves have been perverted through the darkness of the Druid power that Morgana wields.  (Think wolf/human cross and you get the picture - though not the total evilness behind it)

Morgana is manipulating both Merlin and Arthur towards her ultimate goal - a goal that no one saw coming... And Morgana is willing to sacrifice all those she controls to obtain her goals.  Love is an unknown in her heart and it obvious that her hate for Merlin has grown in intensity in the years since their last encounter.

There is loss that will test both Merlin and Arthur and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out in the new upcoming series from Robert Treskillard The Pendragon Spiral.  A little hint  "HC SVNT DRACONES!" "Here be Dragons!" Highlight the blank section for a translation if you want your hint in English rather than Latin!

I highly recommend this book and the entire series for fans of any of the following: Merlin, King Arthur, Historical Fiction, Action, and Fantasy Fiction.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in conjunction with this CSFF blog tour in exchange for my participation and my honest review.

CSFF August Blog Tour ~ Merlin's Nigtmare Day 2

~ Welcome to Day 2 of the CSFF August Blog Tour ~

This month's featured book is Merlin's Nightmare
which is the concluding book in The Merlin Spiral series

In Merlin's Blade Merlin vowed his fealty to Uther High King of Briton and to his son and heir Arthur.

And in Merlin's Nightmare Merlin's vow is tested.  He has vowed to serve Arthur as king, and yet he is torn.  Does he reveal to Arthur his long hidden identity?  Or does he keep this knowledge secret and allow Arthur to continue to see him as his father?

Merlin knows that Arthur's destined to fight for his throne and yet he wants to keep him safe - hidden from those who think him long dead.

Fealty what is it?

An oath of fealty, from the Latin fidelitas (faithfulness), is a pledge of allegiance of one person to another. From Wikipedia

Fealty is sworn by subjects before their king in Merlin's Blade. Yet we take such a vow before our Heavenly King. But what does such a vow mean?

Do we, like Merlin, vow to serve our King and His Son? Or are we making a vow that is only half-hearted. We don't really mean it and don't want to offer the King too much out of fear that He will demand more than we are willing to give?

Have we made a vow to serve our own interests?  Placing our wants and desires above everyone and everything?

To whom do you pledge your life? Has your heart made an oath of fealty? Have you pledged to the Deceiver, to self, or to the King? The choice is yours. Choose wisely, your eternal soul depends on it!

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in conjunction with this CSFF blog tour in exchange for my participation and my honest review.

CSFF August Blog Tour ~ Merlin's Nightmare Day 1

~ Welcome to Day 1 of the CSFF August Blog Tour ~

This month's featured book is Merlin's Nightmare
which is the concluding book in The Merlin Spiral series

Day 1 is a look back at the first 2 books in this series...

Merlin's Blade

Into everyone's life comes a time when they must make a choice and to stand beside that choice. Merlin's time has come....
A stone of incredible power has been brought forth. The evil it's unleashing will change the life of a young man, a village, and an island nation. The future of Britain lies with a stone, a sword, and the blind son of a smith. Merlin's Blade will entrance you, as it draws you in. Be prepared as you enter a world of deep held beliefs and even deeper superstitions. Enter the world of Merlin before Arthur took the throne or even held the sword!

Fealty is sworn by subjects before their king inMerlin's Blade. Merlin vows to serve both his King Uther and his son - Arthur. Merlin's vow was sincere, unlike Tregeagle the Magister of Bosventor who made a half-hearted vow, fearing that Uther would demand more than he was willing to give - after all the villagers owed him more than the King. And at the heart of this lack of fealty is the Druid stone that is enchanting the region. And the people are willing to sacrifice their souls, friends, and family to satisfy a longing or greed that they refused to suppress when offered to them by the stone and its dark powers.

But through faith in Jesu, prayer, and the disability that has been his for 7 years Merlin is able to withstand the evil. As Merlin struggles with how to free his family, friends, village, and king from this insidious delusion he becomes the man he was meant to be. And the struggle to defeat the druid hold and the seductive power of the stone could very well cost Merlin his life.

Merlin's Blade is a fascinating look at Merlin and the faith that he claimed as his own and the strength it gave him to withstand the evil of the Druid stone.

Merlin's Shadow

I found the encounters that Merlin and his sister Ganieda had with the wolves interesting. The wolves hunt
Merlin, yet befriend Ganieda. When Merlin is forced to defend his life against an attack, Ganieda blames her brother for the wolf's death. What is Ganieda's connection to these wolves who seem intent on destroying her brother? Merlin's Shadow continues with Ganieda's relationship with the wolves and in particular Tellyk.

But with the death of her mother and father Ganieda has become embittered against her older half-brother Merlin. And with the twisted manipulation of her grandfather Ganieda bitter resentment becomes all out anger and hatred. But now, thanks to Tellyk, Ganieda has the means to exact her revenge and anyone and everyone who is willing to aid Merlin in his mission to protect young Arthur is in danger. Something evil survived the destruction of the Druid stone and Ganieda has the power to use it and she will....

Firstborn ~ Review

FIRSTBORN: A Novel
By Lorie Ann Grover

Sometimes Fate Has a Different Plan...

Since before Tiadone's birth the R'tan have been beneath the Madronians and their oppression. Worship of the Creator Spirit and reading of the Oracles a punishable offense.  And daughters who are the firstborn must be declared male or discarded.

Tiadone is the first declared male among the R'tan and future declarings will be determined by her success or failure.  Can Tiadone deny her true centerself and survive, living the lie chosen for her by her father?  Or will her true centerself betray her to the Madronians?

Tiadone has been raised with a belief in the Creator Spirit, but as she prepares for initiation and her year of service on the Perimeter she realizes that her body has not conformed to the declaration of being born male.  And then there is Mirko, her twined rapion.  Mirko doesn't fit into the accepted category anymore than does Tiadone.  But how can Tiadone and Mirko deny who they are and still worship the Creator Spirit who bestowed life?

Firstborn is a discovery of self and a fight to prove one's worth.  Who or what should decide the worth of a life?  Should the worth of a person's life be determined by man-made rules and decrees?  Or is worth found in the act of living, to simply be?

Firstborn is unlike any book I've ever read before.  As I read it I wondered what would I do in a similar situation?  Could I live a lie, pretend that I was something I was not?  And what would my feelings be towards my parents for forcing this existence upon me mere minutes after my birth? Would I be able to hide my feelings when they threatened to expose me for who and what I truly was?

I found myself in total empathy with Tiadone as she faced the truth of her femininity and as she questioned her beliefs when she experienced losses.  When Tiadone comes to a point where she must make a choice that will forever set her life on a path of no return, I understood the painful loss that would come no matter which she chose.  This is a book that held my attention and I would love to have a sequel that continues Tiadone's story. Did her choice change anything for the R'tan and firstborn females?

I think this book would have an appeal to YA girls who like books that challenge their thinking and makes them think while at the same time entertains.

I was provided a copy of this book by BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review.

Book Description

Where does a firstborn girl fit in a world dominated by men?
When Tiadone was born, her parents had two choices: leave their daughter outside the community to die in the wilds, or raise her as male and force her to suppress all feminine traits. Now, as the first female living as male in her village, Tiadone must prove her father didn’t make a mistake by letting her live.
As her male initiation approaches, Tiadone knows every eye on the community is on her, and desperately wishes to belong and finally be accepted. But at every step, traditional feminine gifts and traits emerge, and the bird she's been twined with is seen as a sign of the devil.
Worse, as Tiadone completes her rites, she finds she is drawn to her male best friend in ways that are very much in line with the female gender.
Confused and desperate, Tiadone tries to become what she must be while dealing with what she indeed has become: a young woman who may be able to stand up to her despotic rulers and uncover her real purpose in life.

CSFF February Tour ~ One Realm Beyond Day 3

Welcome to the final day of February's CSFF Blog Tour.
February features One Realm Beyond by Donita K. Paul.
This is the debut novel in her newest series Realm Walkers.

One Realm Beyond
Realm Walkers
By Donita K. Paul

Be prepared to enter a world where dragons can shift and become what they are not.  A world where you can step from one into another by way of a portal.  A world where a select few have gifts that allow them to walk through these portals from one realm to another.

But as fantastic as these worlds are there is something wrong. Those who are to protect the weak and oppressed have become corrupt.  Power has given them what they need to rule or to turn a blind eye to the very evils they have sworn to stand against.

It is into this world that Cantor D'Ahma is about to begin his life as a Realm Walker and he may be the last unless he and the friends that he makes can stem the tide of evil that threats to destroy all.

One Realm Beyond is a story that will capture your attention and draw you into this world.  This is a world that will appeal to those who enjoy a good vs. evil story.  The portals are fascinating and I would love to step through one myself (reminiscent of the Ionian gateways from Star Trek).  I also find the 9 planes and their existence interesting and look forward to learning more in future books.  This Fantasy with a good pinch of Sci-fi thrown in to liven things up a bit.  This is one world you'll want to revisit!

In conjunction with the CSFF Blog Tour, I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

CSFF February Tour ~ One Realm Beyond Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 of February's CSFF Blog Tour.
February features One Realm Beyond by Donita K. Paul.
This is the debut novel in her newest series Realm Walkers.

Don't you just LOVE the cover ~ The cover alone would have made me want this book.  And then the description - my interest was captured.

About the Book:
Cantor D’Ahma waited his whole life for this day. Born with a gift to jump between worlds, the young realm walker is finally ready to leave his elderly mentor and accept his role as protector and defender of the realms.

But mere hours after he steps through his first portal, Cantor discovers that his job will be more dangerous and difficult than he ever imagined. The realms are plagued with crime and cruelty, and even members of the once-noble Realm Walkers Guild can no longer be trusted. To make matters worse, his first assignment - finding a dragon to assist him on his quest - has led him to Bridger, who is clearly inept and won’t leave him alone.

With the help of his new friends Bixby and Dukmee, Cantor must uncover the secrets of the corrupt guild before they become too powerful to be stopped. But his skills aren’t progressing as fast as he would like, and as he finds himself deeper and deeper in the guild’s layers of deceit, Cantor struggles to determine where his true allegiance lies.

In conjunction with the CSFF Blog Tour, I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

Join me tomorrow as I review this delightful, attention grabbing book!  (I know too many adjectives, but this is one book that can't be over described in my opinion!)  LOVE it!

CSFF January Blog Tour ~ Outcasts Day 3

Welcome to Day 3 of the first CSFF blog tour of 2014!

Outcast by Jill Williamson is kicking-off the year and Jill took time from her busy schedule
to take part in a short interview about her newest book - Outcasts.

1) Omar is trying to change. Do you think part of the problem he has is the attitude Levi and Jordan have towards him?

Levi and Jordan treat him in a similar way that his father did. And Omar’s insecurities come from his relationship with his dad. So that’s why those two tend to get under Omar’s skin. But Omar is starting to learn that he doesn’t have to be the person his dad wanted him to be. That he can be who God created him to be.

 2) Levi is having trouble getting the Glenrock survivors follow his directives as elder, do you feel this is a result of Levi's own insecurities in his position or is it a result of being in the Safe Lands?

Well, Levi is elder. They even voted him in. So he’s trying to be the best leader he can. But he’s young, and he doesn’t really understand what grace is all about. So he’s quite legalistic in his ways. He strongly believes that with enough will power a person can be perfect, and he’s determined to try. That does stem from his insecurities over his past mistakes. He doesn’t want to make mistakes ever again. But he is human, so he will never be perfect—at least not on earth.

3) I like the link that you created with the naturals and the people from Glenrock, did you have this in mind before you put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) or was this a revelation to you as well?

Hmm… By “link” do you mean the common ancestor? If so, I did have that in mind. I started writing the apocalyptic prequel before I ever started writing the dystopian series. So those characters and what happened to them were always in my mind.

4) With the little tidbits you've dropped about Papa Eli and his time in the Safe Lands what are the possibilities of a prequel?  I for one would be in line waiting.

It could happen, sure. I originally sold the prequel, which is called Thirst, and Captives to Zondervan. But when they learned that I had intended for the dystopian book to be a trilogy, they opted not to buy the prequel. So if the books do well enough, I think Zondervan would be willing to publish the prequel about Eli and his youth group friends. That book is half written, so it wouldn’t take all that long to finish it. Though some of the revelations in the Safe Lands series are spoilers for how Thirst ends.

5) Why the Owl?  What drew you and Omar to this particular character?

In the beginning of Captives, Omar was drawing an owl. I had said he had an obsession with them. So that’s why I thought it would be a good fit. I didn’t give him that interest for any reason in particular. I was just writing, and when Mason has said there were pictures all over the walls in Omar’s room and he felt like there were eyes everywhere, that made me think of owls, since they are always depicted with large eyes. And that’s also why I made the Owl was one of Omar’s favorite superheroes from the comic books his grandfather gave him. The Owl is a real superhero, just not a very popular one. So Omar made it his own.

6) The cover for Book 3 is really interesting ~ which brother do you see as being on the cover?

The way I see it, Levi is on the cover of Captives, Omar is on the cover of Outcasts, and Mason is on the cover of Rebels.

CSFF January Blog Tour ~ Outcasts Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 of the first CSFF blog tour of 2014!

Outcast by Jill Williamson is kicking-off the year.

Outcasts

The Safe Lands #2

By Jill Williamson

When you finish reading Outcasts you will be eagerly awaiting Rebels due Summer 2014 - mark your calendars and start the countdown! If Outcasts is any example this series should end in a fantabulous manner and book 3 should be the best of the series! Another winner from Jill Williamson!

In exchange for my honest and timely review I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book by Jill Williamson and Blink, an imprint of Zondervan. This is definitely for the older YA reader (16+).

CSFF January Blog Tour ~ Outcasts Day 1

Welcome to Day 1 of the first CSFF blog tour of 2014!

Outcast by Jill Williamson is kicking-off the year.
But before delving into the second book of The Safe Lands trilogy
I'm going to recap the series so far...

Captives
The Safe Lands 1
By Jill Williamson
Levi is the favored son of Justin of Elias. He is to marry for love. He is a hunter. He can go on scavenging trips to Denver City. And he has earned the respect of his father, something that his younger brothers cannot do no matter how hard they try.

Mason has decided that trying to earn his father's respect and trust is an impossible task
though he tries his best to please him.

But Omar is determined to win it no matter what the cost, but does he know how
much he is going to pay?

The Safe Lands was designed to protect the people from a plague, but what was to be a safety has turned into an even greater danger.

Captives has a belief in something more than self and learning to accept the person God made you to be. Captives will tug at your heart as you experience the unhappiness that fills the Safe Lands.

This is definitely for the older YA reader (16+).

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
