Home Run ~ Review

Home Run
By Travis Thrasher

Cory Brand's life looks like most peoples' dream, but reality is vastly different from what was portrayed by the media.  He is popping pills for his injured knee, drinking to excess, and living with the memories of the monster that was his father.

Cory, a home run hitting star, became a player out of self-preservation, to protect himself from his father.  Cory doesn't like the game and he doesn't care about other than what he can get out of it.  I find Cory's life to be actually very sad, imagine playing a game for a living and being totally miserable.  Makes one wonder how many star athletes are the same that their escape from the misery that was there life is a new misery.  Life without faith in anything except self and the bottle is just so sad!

But when Cory has a major outburst on field a 10 year old bat boy is hurt.  Overnight he is a YouTube sensation for all the wrong reasons and he is suspended for 8 weeks and told he has to enter a twelve-step program.  But to start out his 8 week suspension he needs to make a public apology to the bat boy in his old hometown - a place Cory vowed to never to return to.  Okmulgee holds Cory's hopes, dreams, and fears and when his drinking causes another near tragedy he is assigned as a Little League coach during his suspension.

Can returning home and facing the pain of his past and the friends he left behind offer him a second chance - a chance to start anew?  With God and the support his family Cory is able to change, but change is never easy especially when we hold what hurts so the most close to our hearts.

Home Run is a heartfelt look at how the cycle of abuse is destructive and generational until we stop it by replacing it with God.  This would be an excellent book to give to anyone who wants to make a clean break from the life they are now living and to embrace the hope that can only be found in God.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher David C Cook and Book Fun in exchange for my fair and honest review.

About Home Run
Baseball star Cory Brand knows how to win. But off the field, he's spiraling out of control. Haunted by old wounds and regrets, his future seems as hopeless as his past.

Until one moment-one mistake-changes everything. To save his career, Cory must go back to the town where it all began. His plan is simple: coach the local baseball team, complete a recovery program, and get out as fast as possible. Instead, he runs headfirst into memories he can't escape ... and the love he left behind.
Faced with a second chance he never expected, Cory embarks on a journey of faith, transformation and redemption. And along the way, he discovers a powerful truth: no one is beyond the healing of God. A novel based on the major motion picture starring Vivica A. Fox and Scott Elrod, Home Run is an inspirational story of the hope and freedom God offers each of us.
