Room for Hope ~ Review with Book Giveaway

Room for Hope
By Kim Vogel Sawyer

Sometimes all you can do is hope...
but when you've lost it how do you reclaim it?

Neva Shilling was a loving and dedicated wife and mother, but in an instant her world is shaken to its foundation.  The man she thought she knewher husbandhas shattered all she has known.  Even worse she can't ask him why?  She can't vent her hurt, her anger, her feelings of betrayal because Warren's death was the catalyst that brought to light his ultimate betrayal.

Warren Shilling was loved by almost everyone who knew himincluding his two families.  Two wives and two sets of children who never knew that the other existed until death claimed Warren and one of his wives.  Can these children ever be part of Neva's family?  Or will they forever be a reminder of Warren's betrayal?

As Neva struggles through her grief, she works to keep the family's business profitable.  But the Depression has hit the country and Buffalo Creek, Kansas, is no exception.  How can she be expected to raise not two, but five children and take on the added responsibilities of the Mercantile?  Neva's determined to give her husband's children a home, but can she ever give them her heart?

Can these unexpected children truly be a gift?  Or are they a curse that will drive Neva from the place she calls home?

It is interesting reading as one goes through this bookwhich is told from the viewpoint of various characters.  The feelings of hurt and confusion expressed by the children, especially Bud, are quite moving.  Arthur Randall and Jesse Caudel make for an interesting study in contrasts as they deal with their own needs and with Neva Shilling and her situation.

This book is moving and touching.  Of all the books by Kim Vogel Sawyer that I have read, I think that this has to be her best.  This is not life seen through rosy-glasses.  The anger, fear and prejudice that is displayed is believable and the motivations behind it understandable though often inexcusable.
Should the sins of the father fall onto the children?  This is explored throughout Room for Hope.

I highly recommend this book.  This is a story of growth, of redemption, of sacrifice, a story of hope. Older teens and adults who appreciate historical fiction that doesn't read like textbook will find much to attract their attention.  The growth and changes that take place all come together to make room for hope.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher WaterBrook Multnomah in exchange for my honest review and tour participation.

About the Book:
In a desperate time, can Neva find
forgiveness for a grievous wrong—
and make room for hope?

Neva Shilling has a heavy load of responsibility while her husband travels to neighboring communities and sells items from his wagon. In his absence, she faithfully runs the Shilling Mercantile, working to keep their business strong as the Depression takes its toll, and caring for their twins.

When a wagon pulls up before supper, Neva and her children rush out—and into the presence of the deputy driving a wagon carrying three young children. The deputy shocks her with the news that Warren and his wife have died, insisting it was their last request that the three children go live with “Aunt Neva.”

Neva’s heart is shattered as she realizes that Warren’s month-long travels were excuses for visits with his secret family. She wants nothing more than to forget Warren, but can she abandon these innocent children to an orphanage? Yet if she takes them in, will she ever be able to see them as more than evidence of her husband’s betrayal and love them the way God does?

Jesus Helps Me ~ Review

Jesus Helps Me
By Callie Grant
Art by Missi Jay

Jesus Helps Me is part of the Knowing My God series from Graham Blanchard and is one of their Learn books.  This book focuses on John 12:44-47 helping children to learn and grow in their understanding of faith.

Focusing on different variety of birds as they live and raise their own young, children are made aware of the different aspects of what faith is and how it applies in our own lives,  This is a book that can grow with your child as you focus on the different aspects as they grow.  The Scripture references are the foundation and the lessons about faith and birds are the building block that will add to one's understanding of the world around us and personal faith.

The pictures of the birds will capture children's attention as you spend time reading the book to and/or with them.  This is a board book so it can withstand some rough book love.  At 18 pages this will hold even the shortest attention span.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher through TBCN/BookFun in exchange for my honest review.

ABOUT THE BOOK (18 pages):

Jesus Helps Me, new to the Knowing My God series, offers four levels of exploration: a quoted Bible passage, beautiful real-world photographs, supportive captions to relate the passage meaning to a child’s life, and thinking questions to personalize the experience. A parent guide gives tips for involving a baby, toddler, and child. In the Graham Blanchard book collection, Jesus Helps Me is a Learn book, which makes personal Bible study accessible to young children who, alongside adults, build a foundation for faith and a lifelong friendship with Jesus. A Refuge at Highland Hall ~ Review

A Refuge at Highland Hall
Edwardian Brides #3
By Carrie Turansky

Penny Ramsey is all grown up and the world is at war.  Her dreams of romance and marriage have been put on hold as she assists her older sister Kate in her efforts to offer a home to some of London's orphaned children.

Penny has been disappointed in matters of the heart before and the uncertainties of war have taken precedence in her mind.  That is until she meets Alex Goodwin a young man training with the Royal Naval Air Service.  But pilots fighting against Germany aren't known for their lengthy service due to the extreme risks involved.  But the heart does't heed the warnings of the mind.

England of 1915 was an island under attack.  Zeppelins have made their way to London and Highland Hall is to become their refuge for the foreseeable future.

But even Highland Hall has been touched by the war.  German prisoners are being held nearby. Many of the men have gone joining the efforts to fight Germany.  Can the place they once called home provide the healing and safety they all require?

I find it interesting how in times of war a group of people is looked upon with distrust because of their ancestry.  In this case many of those who were of German descent were detained and housed as prisoners.  Though many of these men were only guilty of having German blood they were ripped away from their families, their lives treated as if they were conspiring against the land they called home.

Fear is a powerful enemy.  It causes us to see something that isn't there.  It makes us fear rejection.  It causes us to lose faith and hope.  A Refuge at Highland Hall is a journey to finding the hope that has been hidden by the fear of war.

This is a delightful series that you should read in entirety though one can most certainly read each book as a standalone.  It is nice to get to know Penny better with this third book.  Historical fiction fans will enjoy this book.

I was provided a copy this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
The Great War shakes the world of a spirited young woman and the brave British pilot she loves, taking her from London to her family’s magnificent country estate, and sending him into the war-torn skies over France.

Penny Ramsey has always considered Highland Hall her home, but when Britain becomes involved in World War One she travels to London to assist her sister Kate with the eight orphan children she and her husband Jon have taken into their home. Doing her part for the war effort takes priority over Penny’s dreams of romance until she meets Alex Goodwin, a Royal Naval Air Service pilot in training.

Alex is determined to prove his worth and do his part to defend his country. Knowing he is heading off for the dangerous assignment of  chasing Zeppelins across the front line in France, he feels it’s unwise to form any romantic attachments. But he can’t help admiring the pretty, warmhearted Penny and wondering what it would be like to find her waiting when he returns home from the war.

As Penny writes to Alex, their friendship blossoms, and she becomes his tie to home and normalcy as he faces the hardships war. But being an RNAS pilot means confronting the enemy, and the fallout form those experiences push Alex beyond Penny’s reach. Can God mend the brokenness left by the losses of war? Will faith and forgiveness bring them together again?

The Secrets of the Castle ~ Review

The Secrets of the Castle
Thunder and Lightening Book 1
By Aaron M. Zook, Jr.

This is a book should appeal to middle grade boys.  The Zanadu brothers are at present calling Germany home.  When their family trip takes an unexpected and dangerous turn Gabe and Alex embark on an adventure that they weren't expecting.

For some reason their trip to Neuschwanstein has brought them to the attention of some rather unsavory characters.  Gabe and Alex along with their dogs Thunder and Lightening are in danger but solving this mystery could cost them their lives.  But there is a mystery surrounding this castle and it's just asking to be solved,

Gabe and Alex suffer from a healthy dose of sibling rivalry and competitiveness. And this tendency leads them into trouble at times.  But they soon discover that if they hope to survive the latest trouble they find themselves they will have to work together.

Like many kids Gabe and Alex occasionally ignore or forget what their parents tell them, which leads them to unwanted consequences.   But through it all the boys learn some valuable lessons as they attempt to unravel the mystery they find themselves in.

The boys dogs Thunder and Lightening are both a year old and expertly trained to follow commands, which is rather amazing.  But the dogs were never taught to avoid food given them by strangers (a woeful gap in their training as the reader will discover).

I was provided a copy of this book by the author through TBCN/BookFun in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

Intrigue and danger surround two young boys and their dogs as they seek to unravel a castle mystery.

A near disastrous car wreck in Germany launches twelve-year-old Gabriel Zanadu, Alexander, his fourteen year-old brother, and their two dogs, Thunder and Lightning, into a sinister adventure near the famous German castle, Neuschwanstein. Unexplained eavesdropping, death threats, and heart-pumping danger drag Gabe, Alex, and the dogs into the clutches of a little-known foreign terrorist network. After they are kidnapped by the terrorists, and even though they are scraped, bruised, and battered, Gabe and Alex use what they’ve learned from their military dad and home-schooling mom to clash with the criminals.

Fear, pain, and failure drive the boys to tears as they struggle to free themselves from their kidnappers’ grasp. The usual brotherly fights must take a backseat as the boys and dogs scramble to break free and to escape from their enemies in the dark, cramped spaces of an underground battlefield. Hiding, out-of-breath chases, and deadly force all come into play. How do Gabe, Alex, Thunder, and Lightning survive and escape?

Whispers in the Reading Room ~ Review

Whispers in the Reading Room
A Chicago World's Fair Mystery #3
By Shelley Gray

Lydia Bancroft loves books and her job in the library is a pure pleasure.  And her favorite patron never checks-out a book, he doesn't have a library card, and Lydia doesn't know his name. He's a perfect gentleman and makes frequent use of the Reading Room and the books.  Who is this person who seemingly loves books as much as her?

Sebastian Marks is not who Lydia thinks him to be.  His mysterious nature is a cloak to hide his past - a past that he has left behind.  A man to be feared if Chicago gossip is to be believed.  But there is a part of him that wants to be something more than what he is and Lydia intrigues him.

When given the opportunity to offer Lydia a service - rescuing her from a most unpleasant situation - the two form a most unusual friendship.  And this friendship will leave a lasting impact on not only Lydia and Sebastian but on those closest to them.

But danger is lurking the streets of Chicago and in the less affluent areas murders are becoming more numerous.  Unfortunately for Lydia her name is linked to the latest one - her reputation is damaged, an advantageous marriage seems unlikely, and her mother is horrified.  What's a young woman with limited means to do?  Lydia is about to embark on the experience of a lifetime.

Are you ready to enter the Reading Room and take a step back in time?

This is the first time I've read any of Shelley Gray's books and I have to admit I'm intrigued with the conclusion of this series so I now have to go back a step further in time and acquaint myself with the first two books in the series, which I'm pleased to say I can pick-up in my own library - though I will check them out.  Unlike Sebastian I do have a library card.

I was provided a copy of this book by the Fiction Guild in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

Lydia’s job at the library is her world—until a mysterious patron catches her eye . . . and perhaps her heart.
Just months after the closure of the Chicago World’s Fair, librarian Lydia Bancroft finds herself fascinated by a mysterious dark-haired and dark-eyed patron. He has never given her his name; he actually never speaks to a single person. All she knows about him is that he loves books as much as she does.
Only when he rescues her in the lobby of the Hartman Hotel does she discover that his name is Sebastian Marks. She also discovers that he lives at the top of the prestigious hotel and that most everyone in Chicago is intrigued by him.
Lydia and Sebastian form a fragile friendship, but when she discovers that Mr. Marks isn’t merely a very wealthy gentleman, but also the proprietor of an infamous saloon and gambling club, she is shocked.
Lydia insists on visiting the club one fateful night and suddenly is a suspect to a murder. She must determine who she can trust, who is innocent, and if Sebastian Marks—the man so many people fear—is actually everything her heart believes him to be.

Game Over ~ Review

Game Over
The MindWar Trilogy #3
By Andrew Klavan

Rick Dial has entered the Realm and it has left its mark on him. His dreams are of the Realm and his headaches are getting worse. Has he delved too long into the Realm?  Is he one trip away from becoming like Favian and Mariel - forever trapped within the Realm?

Kurodar is not about to let his latest disappointment at the hands of Rick deter him.  In fact he is determined to turn Rick into his newest weapon in his bid to exact his revenge upon the United States and all who stand against him.  And he knows just how to do this...

All the excitement and intensity of MindWar and Hostage Run doesn't let up in the conclusion of this trilogy.  The war against the Realm has become more dangerous when Kurodar gains control of a computer system that allows him even greater power.  And this time Kurodar may very well annihilate any and all who oppose him.  The time to stop him is now!  With mere hours to stop Kurodar, Rick must face his greatest challenge ever.

Until I read this series I had never before read any of Andrew Klavan's work.  At the recommendation of my sister I decided to give this author a "read"-over and this series was my introduction into the mind of Andrew Klavan and this journey has been worth the time spent between the pages.  This final book actual was so intriguing that I read it in one day, though it was a very late night as I could not put it down until I reached the final page.

Get ready for some unexpected twists that you'll never see coming - identities will be revealed, betrayals will be discovered, and there will be losses.

If you have not read the first two books in the series be sure to pick them up before starting Game Over so that you can fully enjoy the series and see how Rick grows as a person.  The only drawback in my opinion is that the series is over.  But I so enjoyed it I plan on re-reading it again.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers program in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
The MindWar Realm is a computerized world created by a deranged terrorist named Kurodar. Built through a link between Kurodar’s mind and a network of supercomputers, The Realm is a pathway through which the madman can project himself into any computer system on the planet.
