Hours to Kill ~ Review

Hours to Kill
Homeland Heroes #3
By Susan Sleeman

Addy (Addison) Leigh has a lead that could be just what she needs to break the case that has stymied her. But just as she gets her big break she is involved in an accident that causes memory loss. With the lead that she thought so promising gone she needs the help of her estranged husband Mack Jordan and the federal team that she used to work with. Now she just needs to remember them...

When Mack gets to Addy's side he is more than a little dismayed that she has no recollection of him or their marriage. What's worse he knows that it is his fault that she is now in this position - having bailed on their marriage after a dangerous PTSD incident he had no other choice.  But his choice drove Addy from Washington, D.C. to Oregon and into the sights of the unknown assailant who wants her dead.

But Addy's investigation showed an imminent threat that needed to be stopped before there were thousands of casualties. But the deeper RED Team, Addy, and Mack dig for information the greater the danger and the evil that they face.  Their search for answers will lead them to the darkest regions of the net and it won't be pretty.

Hours to Kill is the third book in the Homeland Heroes series and it is as intense and thrilling as the first two books in the series (Seconds to Live and Minutes to Die). This time the story focuses on RED Team member Mack Jordan and his wife Addy Leigh and the backstory that was hinted at in the two previous books in the series. This book is perfect for a long weekend or an all-night reading event. The suspense keeps one turning the pages and what is thought to be known has a few twists thrown in to keep the reader guessing as to the final outcome.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

With time running out in their darkest hour…

Just as Homeland Security agent Addison Leigh reaches the pinnacle of her investigation into a cyber-enabled firearm’s smuggling ring she’s attacked and left for dead. In a coma in the hospital, her estranged husband, ICE agent Mack Jordan is notified. He may have let his past military trauma ruin their short marriage, but she never gave up on their relationship, and he remains her next of kin.

Will he find her attacker before it’s too late?

Mack rushes to her bedside where he promises to hunt down the man who attacked her. Mack failed her once when he bailed on their marriage, and he’s not about to let her down again. But when she wakes up in the hospital, she remembers neither the attack nor even being ever married to Mack. And when a second attempt is made on her life, it’s clear something very sinister is going on and Mack and Addison are in for the ride of their lives.

You Again ~ Review

You Again
By Amanda Waters

Rosalee McDonnell is stuck in rut and she is feeling older than her 62 years, 6 of which she's lived as a widow. Her husband, Tommy had been there for her when she most needed him just as she had been for him through his last days as cancer took him.

But Tommy McDonnell wasn't her first love. Her first love was in 1973, as a 17 year-old-girl, Rosalee fell in love with George Barnes. But when he broke her heart she never saw him again, nor did she expect to. But a last-minute invitation leads to a surprise meeting and a second chance at love.

You Again is told in both the present and through Rosalee's remembrances of the past. The first couple chapters seemed slow but as the story progressed so to did the pacing. It is interesting to compare past George and Rosalee to their present selves.  Overall I'd say this was a pretty good book.  If you are looking for something new that is a standalone read and falls into the gentle, clean (a few kisses) read category you will want to give this one a try.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
You Again is a sweet love story starring Rosalee McDonnell, a 62-year-old widow who unexpectedly reconnects with George Barnes, her first love, the man who broke her heart at 17, and someone she thought she'd never see again. In alternating chapters, Rosalee also recalls the summer of 1973 when she and George met and fell in love. You Again is a story of first love and second chances, of resilience, family, friendship, and living a full life.

For fans of Kristan Higgins and Katherine Reay.

Undercurrent of SecretsUndercurrent of Secrets
Doors to the Past
By Rachel Scott McDaniel

Now to begin with I will admit I have not yet finished this book - due to a shipping mishap I got the book late. But what I have read has been excellent.
I really enjoy books that take place in various time periods with something that ties them together. In this case the commonality is The Belle of Louisville. This ship is in both 1920 and the present the focal point of a mystery.

In both time periods the characters are mostly likeable but there are hints at secrets that may or may not change my opinion of them (further reading will be needed.

I love both the cover and the title of this book - it just drew me to the book and at this goes well with the story. At this time I believe this will be a 4/5 star reviewed book if all continues as it it is with the pacing and storyline.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Lost and Found Faith ~ Review with Giveaway

Lost and Found Faith JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for
Lost and Found Faith
by Laurel Blount, hosted by

Lost and Found Faith
Lost and Found Faith
By Laurel Blount

Maggie Byrne just wants to give Oliver what she was given - a second chance at a loving family. But Oliver has a difficult time forming an attachment to anyone. At least he did until he was found wandering by Neil Hamilton. For some reason, Oliver formed an attachment with Neil, nicknamed Iceman by his students. Can a detached hurting man be the influence needed by a toddler suffering from abandonment issues?  Could this be the chance he's been given to find the man that he used to be?

Oliver is the child Maggie wants to give a home to. But he just hasn't connected with her the way she had hoped he would. She needs Neil Hamilton's help to bond with Oliver or she could lose this precious child who has stolen her heart. As a child of the foster system, she wants to save Oliver from the uncertainty she faced until she found a home with Ruby.

Can two people scarred by their pasts come together to heal a hurting child?

Lost and Found Faith is a lovely story and it is the first book in a new series that will follow the foster siblings of Maggie if the note from the author is any indication. I really like how Maggie and Neil's stories are slowly revealed as the story unfolds. I think the biggest issue that they both had was communicating. But communicating was revealing a deeper part of themselves - becoming vulnerable, and honestly, most people don't want to put themselves in that position. To find what was lost will take bravery and trust if they are willing to take the risk.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectation but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

The Nature of Small Birds ~ Review

The Nature of Small Birds
By Susie Finkbeiner

Mindy Matthews wants to connect with her roots. She was a child who was taken from a war-torn country and brought into a family who loved her as their own. But she wants to know if she has family out there. The Nature of Small Birds is the story of Mindy's journey - a journey of discovery.

The book presents Mindy's journey at various periods of time and is told from the perspective of various members of her adoptive family.  Her parents Linda and Bruce and her older Sonny all have memories of when Mihn (aka Mindy joined their family. As the story progresses the family dynamics come into play. Mindy was sent to the US as Vietnam fell to Communist forces, a young child leaving her family and her country behind on the promise of something better.

The story alternates between 1975, 1988, and 2013, these glimpses offer insights into the Matthews family - a family joined together by love, who by their very support are offering Mindy what she needs - a chance to discover the prologue of her life.

When you hear the title The Nature of Small Birds and see the cover you just know something beautiful must be tucked away in these pages. And a beautiful story of love unfolds - but with all life not every moment is what we want it to be but it is true to reality.

If you have never read Susie Finkbeiner's work before you are in for a treat as she has a way of bringing her characters to life. They are more than mere words upon a page they have depth and dimension. And if you've read her before you won't be disappointed in this newest work. If asked to describe this book in one word Excellent would be my word of choice.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion ~ All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

In 1975, three thousand children were airlifted out of Saigon to be adopted into Western homes. When Mindy, one of those children, announces her plans to return to Vietnam to find her birth mother, her loving adopted family is suddenly thrown back to the events surrounding her unconventional arrival in their lives.

Though her father supports Mindy's desire to meet her family of origin, he struggles privately with an unsettling fear that he'll lose the daughter he's poured his heart into. Mindy's mother undergoes the emotional rollercoaster inherent in the adoption of a child from a war-torn country, discovering the joy hidden amid the difficulties. And Mindy's sister helps her sort through relics that whisper of the effect the trauma of war has had on their family--but also speak of the beauty of overcoming.

Told through three strong voices in three compelling timelines, The Nature of Small Birds is a hopeful story that explores the meaning of family far beyond genetic code...

The Ears Have It ~ Review

The Ears Have It
Agents of the Convent #2
By Rebecca Connolly

Emmeline Bartlett has a life no one knows of  - she prowls the streets of London at night. She is seeking out the darker forces that hide beneath the cloak of night, and when she has discovered all she needs she exposes them to the world through the power of the written word.  What she does exposes her to danger and in her attempt to flee it she is about to have a chance meeting of a lifetime.

Teo Mendoza has traveled to England, to London, for two purposes - to establish a partnership with British shipping interests and to learn more about his English roots and his inheritance. Wondering the streets of London he never expected to meet someone quite like Ears. She intrigues him with her clever disguises and wit. He is about to see a side of England that few ever glimpse and it will change him forever.

This is the second book in the Agents of the Covent series but it can easily be read as a standalone if you have not yet read the first book. Now this book does have several characters from some of the author's previous series make appearances (which if you have read  The London League books you will readily enjoy).

If you are a fan of Regency fiction with all its cloak-and-dagger intrigue and romance, you will enjoy this newest offering from Rebecca Connolly. French interests are planning against the British government and their machinations could very well bring it down. This is a well-paced book with characters one can relate to.

Another winner from Rebecca Connolly that is not to be missed.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

To see or not to see...

Emmeline Bartlett has a secret. By day, she is the polite, proper, sometimes teacher of writing and rhetoric at the prestigious Miss Masters's Finishing School. But by night, she disguises herself as the mysterious Ears, exploring and investigating the darker sides of London, writing articles about her discoveries under a pseudonym and exposing scandals. When a handsome Spaniard crosses her path, Emmeline discovers new adventures in London by night, as well as new dangers.

Teodoro de Vickers y Mendoza isn't sure what he is going to do with the title he inherited from his estranged English grandfather, but he's come to England to find out. Meeting Ears on a nighttime walk isn't part of the plan, nor is finding her intriguing, exciting, and beautiful. The further he gets into her world, the more he wonders about his own, and the less certain he is about everything.

Except for her.
