Heavenly Messengers or Deadly Parasites?

In the chaotic aftermath of an apocalyptic war, the strange lights in the sky heralding the coming of unearthly beings seemed like an answer to prayer. When the heavenly visitors entered selected people and transformed them into angels who demanded obedience in exchange for the restoration of order, the majority accepted their new rulers.

But Ben Garrison and his siblings, Jack and Trudy, have seen a dark side to these so-called angels. They join a rebel faction with one goal: destroy the invaders and free the world from their tyranny.
When the rebels catch wind of an angel plot to invade the resistance region and spread a deadly contagion, the Garrisons embark on a crucial mission to swap the angel troops’ vaccine with a fake injection, stealing the real vaccine to save the rebels. The catch: Ben and Trudy, in disguise as doctors, must volunteer to become implanted by angels and fake their implantation.

The rebels’ plan, however, is soon exposed, jeopardizing the mission and their lives. Their only hope for rescue lies in an odd bounty hunter, a young angel priestess, and a mysterious spy embedded among the angels—a woman whose identity the rebels have yet to discover.

Killer Deadline ~ Review with Giveaway

Killer Deadline
By Lauren Carr

Nicki Bryant blew it years ago with her first love - the one she always thought was THE ONE. But she left home following her career dreams and to not see The One fall for someone else. But now she's heading home and who knows what the future holds for reconnecting with Ryan.

But before she can figure out just where she and Ryan stand a murder rocks her world and Pine Grove, Pennsylvania. Nicki finds the body of her childhood rival and naturally, that looks just a tad suspicious. But why would anyone kill Ashley Addison? Could she truly have discovered who was responsible for Nicki's father's murder? Or was Ashley's big scoop something else? Nicki is determined to find out before someone else at the station ends up dead.

This was a fun read and I really loved Elmo - who couldn't love a rescued boxer with a social media following most influencers would die for? Let's just say Elmo totally rivals Lauren Carr's other canine creations (if you've read her other books) but Elmo is the perfect housekeeper!

Nicki's an intense individual who makes the perfect investigative journalist. She wants answers yesterday and she is willing to dig in to get them. She might get it wrong at the beginning but with the help of her family and close friends, she'll get the answers she wants and needs. And all this while trying to figure out how to let The One know that he is the one for her, with somewhat humorous results, I might add.

Hoping that this is the start of a new series starring Nicki, Elmo, Ryan, and the rest of Pine Grove, PA! If you love cozy mysteries this one is for you.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

"Here we go! Carr is a master storyteller who always offers a plot full of twists and turns, a bit of humor to offset the dark, and a unique cast of characters. In Killer Deadline that cast includes - handsome Ryan, her first love (who is now her step-brother); a mysterious social media friend called Nerdy Guy; Elmo, a super smart dog, a boxer, she rescued who has become a social media star and has a penchant for cleaning; a TV station full of suspicious employees; and more.

"This book is a wonderful read to pick up at the end of a long day. It truly is a "cozy murder mystery."  I promise, it'll draw you in right from page one and keep you turning the pages until you reach the very last page. I can't wait for the second book in this series." - Marilyn R. Wilson, Olio by Marilyn

Midnight on the River Grey ~ Review

Midnight on the River Grey
By Abigail Wilson

Rebecca Hunter is all alone but for her Aunt Jo and her guardian - Mr. Lewis Browning, the man she believes responsible for her brother’s death. When Mr. Browning decides that Rebecca and her aunt should tale up residence in Greybourne Hall, Rebecca is less than pleased at the prospect. This is the opportunity she’s been hoping for - a chance to investigate her guardian and learn the truth of her brother’s death. Was it an accident? Or was it murder?

Greybourne Hall is a place of secrets and Rebecca soon finds that Mr. Browning is viewed by the locals with a measure of distrust. And she has been duly warned by those she meets to not trust the cold, reclusive man.

Lewis Browning has suffered losses that have shaped him into the man Rebecca has met. Her brother and her cousin Ellen never had a kind word to pass on through their letters. But as Rebecca gets to know her guardian she is confused as to just who he is. Is he the "Midnight Devil" that he is referred to or is he the man that her late father looked on almost as a son? She needs to know who he is before she can determine the truth about his role in her brother's death.

This is another delightful offering from Abigail Wilson that readers will enjoy getting lost between the pages of. Mystery and romance blend together so that Regency fans won't be disappointed. And if you haven't read the author's previous work In the Shadow of Croft Towers you will want to after reading this one. Both books can be read as a standalone though there are characters who are in both books.

About the Book:
She knew the house was keeping secrets.
If only the darkness would speak...

After her brother’s mysterious death, Rebecca Hunter vows to expose the man she believes responsible: Mr. Lewis Browning—known by the locals as the Midnight Devil and by Rebecca as her new guardian.

Summoned to his reclusive country estate to await her London season, Rebecca plans her own secret investigation among the darkened corridors of the mysterious Greybourne Hall. Yet Lewis Browning is not as she once imagined, and his motivation is horribly unclear. Recurrent nightmares and Rebecca’s restless feelings are further complicated by the shadow of her mother’s prior descent into madness and wondering if she, too, will follow the same heartbreaking path.

Even as midnight rides, strange injuries, and further murders lead back to Mr. Browning, Rebecca can’t ignore the subtle turn of her heart. Has she fallen for the man she swore would pay for her brother’s death? And moreover, can she trust him with her uncertain future?

The Flying Flamingo SIsters ~ Review

The Flying Flamingo Sisters
By Carrie Seim
Narrated by Gabriel Vaughan, Bill Andrew Quinn, Jessica Almasy, Carrie Seim, Kevin Pariseau, Dina Pearlman, and Khristine Hvam

Fans of Lemony Snicket will appreciate this book. But it is better in that it isn't quite as dark. The story moves at a good pace. I love the Flamingo Sisters who are attempting to find their missing parents while avoiding their dastardly uncle. Yes, there is an evil uncle and he doesn't approve of girls being pilots. Worse he is after the legendary family treasure that must be found within the next few days (weeks time isn't fully explained here) or it will be lost forever.

The narration is good with a cast to portray the different characters. This is perfect for family listening and is just a few hours long. I will say that how it ends, one can only hope that there will be a sequel furthering the flying adventures of the Flamingo sisters. This is a fun read and one that one will relisten to just to look for clues that may have been missed the first time through.

About the Book:
By Audible Originals
Length: 2 hrs and 13 mins

This hilarious, heartfelt, and soaring adventure will delight fans of The Goonies and Indiana Jones. Performed as a 1930s radio drama, it’s bursting with humor for all ages, orchestral scoring, and some of the most talented voices on Broadway.

When their ace pilot parents (and adorable puppy) mysteriously disappear over the Pacific, the Flamingo Sisters—Flo, Faye, and Franny—escape the clutches of their evil Uncle Freidrich (who believes girls should never pilot aeroplanes) and join a flying circus. They soon become a smashing sensation, performing aerial acrobatics, wing walking, and other death-defying feats in a dazzling biplane outfitted with three cockpits.

But when the girls discover a mysterious map—which may lead them to the long-lost Flamingo family fortune—their dastardly uncle follows them on a thrilling chase in the skies. The Flying Flamingo Sisters must use wits, courage, and derring-do to solve secret codes, trek through spooky jungles, and save their parents. Not to mention themselves!

Kill and Run ~ Review with Giveaway

KILL AND RUN by Lauren Carr
Kill and Run
Thorny Rose Mystery #1
By Lauren Carr
Read by C.J. McAllister

Kill and Run opens with a hit and run accident 13 years ago that cost Police Office Nick Gates his life. Fast forward 13 years and a random attack results in the lives of 5 women with apparently no connection between them. Lieutenant Murphy Thornton catches the case and takes it for the US Navy to investigate when one of the women has a tie to the Navy. Let's just say that the head of his department is more than a little enraged acting in a most unbecoming, unprofessional manner and is in desperate need of a bar of soap to stick in her mouth for a few hours.

Soon Murphy and his wife of mere months are hosting a group in their home. First is Murphy's step-mother Cameron Gates, wife of the late Nick Gates, who has a chance to question a person of interest in her first husband's death. Second is 13-year-old Issy, whose mother was one of the victims, whom Murphy places in protective custody. The third is Jessica's brother Tristan and his tarantula Monique who has had a small problem with his apartment. So a busy full house is about to add some interesting twists to the Thornton home.

When Cameron's case and Murphy's murders seem to have a distant connection things get really interesting. But this is Washington, D.C., and truth has a way of getting buried in the quest for power. And there are a ton of layers of secrets that will have to be shifted through to get to the truth. And it ain't pretty - think scandal headlines that are a politician's worst nightmare and you have an idea of just what the Thornton men and Cameron Gates are up against. Someone wants these secrets buried forever and the cost of life it takes to accomplish it is no obstacle.

Kill and Run is most definitely in the PG category and not something I would label a clean or gentle read so be forewarned if that is what you are looking for this is as an acquaintance of mine would say "spicy but not too spicy." I will admit my favorite scenes all take place with the various animals and their antics. If murder is your thing you will love Kill and Run. As to the killer, there are plenty of suspects once the pieces start to come together it is just a question of who. The narration is well presented by C.J. McAllister. There is no drag and it progresses at a good pace for the 11-hour reading, good for a long commute or just eye-resting listening enjoyment.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a townhome outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to shift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?

"The plot was original, fresh and fast-paced in spite of the "traditional elements" employed, which can normally be found in any other thriller of this genre. The USP of this story would be its unpredictability. When you think you have it all guessed up, the plot would change its course, keeping you hooked. There were a lot of suspense twists and turns that kept the momentum up. Needless to say, the writing was simply perfect. One thing that the writer needs to be lauded for is the humor she inculcated in the book. Minus those humorous parts, the book would have been one serious read." - Reviewer: Book and Ink

Beyond (Awkward) Side Hugs ~ Review with Giveaway

Beyond (Awkward) Side Hugs
By Bronwyn Lea
Foreward by Christine Caine

Living as Christian Brothers
and Sisters in a Sex-Crazed World

The Church finds itself in an awkward position - how do Christians share the love that we are instructed to share with one another? The Church has slipped into the cultural norm of seeing as the world does. We jump to the same conclusions that all shows of affection must have a sexual root. Familia love has no place when we observe others interacting with one another.

Sigmund Freud's legacy of psychoanalysis is alive and well. It has saturated all aspects of the Western World - we see it everywhere and suspect innuendo and undertones in everything.  It has taken up permanent residence in our books, movies, and music. But Freud's legacy is starving us - love has no meaning, no attachments and purely focused on the pleasures of the moment.

The Church needs to get back to the Bible when it comes to love between believing brothers and sisters. We need to stop allowing the dominant cultural influences to dictate how we interact with one another. There are four loves but we have all but forgotten the three that should be foremost in our lives. There is storge which is the strong binding love one has for one's family. This is also the brotherly (or sisterly) love we are to share with fellow believers. Then we have phileo which is the love of companions, friends, those with whom we share interests. This love is the warmth of friendship we feel to those who are, like us, people of God. Agape love is the love that God has offered to us not because it is our right but because it is a choice. This is the same love that a parent of a wayward child offers - it is an undeserved love freely given by the giver for no reason. This is the mark that Christians are to be distinguished by. All too often these loves get lost in the physical draw of eros

We are to care for our family. To avoid this according to Paul is to be worse than an unbeliever. But we must ask ourselves who is my family? If we answer truthfully all believers are our family - they are our brothers and sisters. If we can keep this in mind we can love them as such and with time not be left feeling awkward when we express love for our family.

This is a book that is well worth reading and rereading. There is much to take in and this book is written to every believer no matter their marital status. As Jesus said, "For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."(NIV Matthew 12:50) We have family all around us and we should love them as Jesus loved those who became His brothers and sisters and not feel self-conscience about a familia affection.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion ~ all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
It Doesn’t Have to Be This Weird
When it comes to relationships between men and women, we have more questions than answers:
  • How do we keep relationships with the opposite sex healthy—and still hug each other after small group?
  • Is it possible for married men and women to be friends with people of the opposite sex?
  • What does it mean to be a woman if you’re not a wife, or a man if you’re not a husband?
Jesus’ pattern for church living was one of family—of brothers and sisters living in intimate, life-giving community with each other. With story, sensitivity, and hope, Beyond Awkward Side Hugs invites us to leave behind eroticized, fear-based patterns and move toward gendered, generous relationships between men and women of character as we love one another as Jesus did.
Beyond Awkward Side Hugs is a deep well of biblical wisdom, and Lea has written with nuance and clarity, humor and grace.” –Jen Pollock Michel, author of Surprised by Paradox and Keeping Place
“The church desperately needs a bigger vision for how men and women can flourish together in ministry and friendship, and Bronwyn Lea paints a vivid picture for how we’ll get there.” –Steve Wiens, author of Shining Like the SunBeginnings, and Whole
