Kill and Run ~ Review with Giveaway

KILL AND RUN by Lauren Carr
Kill and Run
Thorny Rose Mystery #1
By Lauren Carr
Read by C.J. McAllister

Kill and Run opens with a hit and run accident 13 years ago that cost Police Office Nick Gates his life. Fast forward 13 years and a random attack results in the lives of 5 women with apparently no connection between them. Lieutenant Murphy Thornton catches the case and takes it for the US Navy to investigate when one of the women has a tie to the Navy. Let's just say that the head of his department is more than a little enraged acting in a most unbecoming, unprofessional manner and is in desperate need of a bar of soap to stick in her mouth for a few hours.

Soon Murphy and his wife of mere months are hosting a group in their home. First is Murphy's step-mother Cameron Gates, wife of the late Nick Gates, who has a chance to question a person of interest in her first husband's death. Second is 13-year-old Issy, whose mother was one of the victims, whom Murphy places in protective custody. The third is Jessica's brother Tristan and his tarantula Monique who has had a small problem with his apartment. So a busy full house is about to add some interesting twists to the Thornton home.

When Cameron's case and Murphy's murders seem to have a distant connection things get really interesting. But this is Washington, D.C., and truth has a way of getting buried in the quest for power. And there are a ton of layers of secrets that will have to be shifted through to get to the truth. And it ain't pretty - think scandal headlines that are a politician's worst nightmare and you have an idea of just what the Thornton men and Cameron Gates are up against. Someone wants these secrets buried forever and the cost of life it takes to accomplish it is no obstacle.

Kill and Run is most definitely in the PG category and not something I would label a clean or gentle read so be forewarned if that is what you are looking for this is as an acquaintance of mine would say "spicy but not too spicy." I will admit my favorite scenes all take place with the various animals and their antics. If murder is your thing you will love Kill and Run. As to the killer, there are plenty of suspects once the pieces start to come together it is just a question of who. The narration is well presented by C.J. McAllister. There is no drag and it progresses at a good pace for the 11-hour reading, good for a long commute or just eye-resting listening enjoyment.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a townhome outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to shift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?

"The plot was original, fresh and fast-paced in spite of the "traditional elements" employed, which can normally be found in any other thriller of this genre. The USP of this story would be its unpredictability. When you think you have it all guessed up, the plot would change its course, keeping you hooked. There were a lot of suspense twists and turns that kept the momentum up. Needless to say, the writing was simply perfect. One thing that the writer needs to be lauded for is the humor she inculcated in the book. Minus those humorous parts, the book would have been one serious read." - Reviewer: Book and Ink

Heaven Came Down ~ Teaser Reveal and Spotlight

Bryan Davis has a new book coming out that is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel called Heaven Came Down. This will be the first book in the Oculus Gate series.

Today we are having a cover tease reveal and it is most definitely a tease to one's imagination. Fortunately, we don't have long to wait for the full cover, which is scheduled to be revealed on May 18th along with all the preorder information.

But before we get to the teaser reveal enjoy the back cover blurb:

Heavenly Messengers or Deadly Parasites?

In the chaotic aftermath of apocalyptic war, the strange lights in the sky heralding the coming of unearthly beings seemed like an answer to prayer. When the heavenly visitors entered selected people and transformed them into angels who demanded obedience in exchange for the restoration of order, the majority accepted their new rulers.

But Ben Garrison and his siblings, Jack and Trudy, have seen a dark side to these so-called angels. They join a rebel faction with one goal: destroy the invaders and free the world from their tyranny.

When the rebels catch wind of an angel plot to invade the resistance region and spread a deadly contagion, the Garrisons embark on a crucial mission to swap the angel troops’ vaccine with a fake injection, stealing the real vaccine to save the rebels. The catch: Ben and Trudy, in disguise as doctors, must volunteer to become implanted by angels and fake their implantation.

The rebels’ plan, however, is soon exposed, jeopardizing the mission and their lives. Their only hope for rescue lies in an odd bounty hunter, a young angel priestess, and a mysterious spy embedded among the angels—a woman whose identity the rebels have yet to discover.

And now to the cover teaser reveal...

Beyond (Awkward) Side Hugs ~ Review with Giveaway

Beyond (Awkward) Side Hugs
By Bronwyn Lea
Foreward by Christine Caine

Living as Christian Brothers
and Sisters in a Sex-Crazed World

The Church finds itself in an awkward position - how do Christians share the love that we are instructed to share with one another? The Church has slipped into the cultural norm of seeing as the world does. We jump to the same conclusions that all shows of affection must have a sexual root. Familia love has no place when we observe others interacting with one another.

Sigmund Freud's legacy of psychoanalysis is alive and well. It has saturated all aspects of the Western World - we see it everywhere and suspect innuendo and undertones in everything.  It has taken up permanent residence in our books, movies, and music. But Freud's legacy is starving us - love has no meaning, no attachments and purely focused on the pleasures of the moment.

The Church needs to get back to the Bible when it comes to love between believing brothers and sisters. We need to stop allowing the dominant cultural influences to dictate how we interact with one another. There are four loves but we have all but forgotten the three that should be foremost in our lives. There is storge which is the strong binding love one has for one's family. This is also the brotherly (or sisterly) love we are to share with fellow believers. Then we have phileo which is the love of companions, friends, those with whom we share interests. This love is the warmth of friendship we feel to those who are, like us, people of God. Agape love is the love that God has offered to us not because it is our right but because it is a choice. This is the same love that a parent of a wayward child offers - it is an undeserved love freely given by the giver for no reason. This is the mark that Christians are to be distinguished by. All too often these loves get lost in the physical draw of eros

We are to care for our family. To avoid this according to Paul is to be worse than an unbeliever. But we must ask ourselves who is my family? If we answer truthfully all believers are our family - they are our brothers and sisters. If we can keep this in mind we can love them as such and with time not be left feeling awkward when we express love for our family.

This is a book that is well worth reading and rereading. There is much to take in and this book is written to every believer no matter their marital status. As Jesus said, "For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."(NIV Matthew 12:50) We have family all around us and we should love them as Jesus loved those who became His brothers and sisters and not feel self-conscience about a familia affection.

About the Book:
It Doesn’t Have to Be This Weird
When it comes to relationships between men and women, we have more questions than answers:
  • How do we keep relationships with the opposite sex healthy—and still hug each other after small group?
  • Is it possible for married men and women to be friends with people of the opposite sex?
  • What does it mean to be a woman if you’re not a wife, or a man if you’re not a husband?
Jesus’ pattern for church living was one of family—of brothers and sisters living in intimate, life-giving community with each other. With story, sensitivity, and hope, Beyond Awkward Side Hugs invites us to leave behind eroticized, fear-based patterns and move toward gendered, generous relationships between men and women of character as we love one another as Jesus did.
Beyond Awkward Side Hugs is a deep well of biblical wisdom, and Lea has written with nuance and clarity, humor and grace.” –Jen Pollock Michel, author of Surprised by Paradox and Keeping Place
“The church desperately needs a bigger vision for how men and women can flourish together in ministry and friendship, and Bronwyn Lea paints a vivid picture for how we’ll get there.” –Steve Wiens, author of Shining Like the SunBeginnings, and Whole

The Governess of Banbury Park ~ Review with Snippet

The Governess of Banbury Park
by Julie Matern

Sophia Cavanaugh is crushed when she learns that her father made no provisions for her future. But she is determined to protect his good name and to do so she must leave all her friends and acquaintances behind. With no destination in mind and funds limited she sent out to make a new life for herself, seeking employment as a governess.

Choosing Kersey as her destination Sophia is blessed to find a room with the Burleys, an older couple who take her in as if she were their own daughter. She soon develops a few friendships and to her discomfort catches the eye of the local minister who is considered most eligible. But Sophia has set ideas about marriage and desires one like her parents - one based on love and not one of convenience.

But Charles Mortimer is a man of status and his mother has a plan for both her children - one that will elevate their social standing. And one that doesn't include a penniless orphan of a minister nor a governess. And to make sure that Sophia and Charles don't form an attachment Mrs. Mortimer is more than happy to assist Sophia in securing a position far from Kersey.

The Governess of Banbury Park starts out in such a way that the reader thinks that this is a gentle read with the greatest obstacle is Sophia's search for a position and a society mama who looks down upon her. But upon her arrival in Banbury Park, the story takes a marked turn. Sophia's employer is not what he appears at least according to his wife but is she just a disenchanted wife or do her complaints have merit?

This book takes a look at the need to climb the social and financial ladder through the arranged marriages of one's children. Feelings had no bearing in marriage as it was, for the most part, the equivalent of a business contract between two parties benefitting in some manner. Daughters and wives were often given little protection under the law, considered little more than a possession to be traded away.

Once this work took Sophia from Kersey the story added some depth giving the reader more than a pretty story to pass the hours. This is an intriguing read that I highly recommend. Set in the Regency period one can truly appreciate just how the world has changed, allowing one to follow one's heart and not despising those who have to seek employment. Having read Julie Matern's previous book work I can honestly say there are marked differences so one does not feel as if one is reading a reworked book - tweaked just enough to be published with a new title.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Genre: Regency, Romance

With little experience and no references, securing a position proves more difficult than expected until she finds a champion in the dashing and well-connected Charles Mortimer. he quickly captures her heart but are the feelings mutual?
Sophia is provided a position by his meddling mother and the two are parted, but fate thrusts them back together. Will Sophia risk her heart and confess her love?

About the Author

matern-julie-author-photo_2
This is the second regency romance by Julie and the third is well underway.
Julie was born and raised in London, England and still visits often to see family, wander around her old haunts and order cream teas with scones full of clotted cream and jam and a big cup of hot chocolate. She loves all things Jane Austen as well as mysteries, photography, chocolate, shoes, pickle ball and …chocolate.
Snippet
On the final day, the whole company, including Sophia and Emily, was taking a walk around the estate after lunch when the redoubtable Mrs. Mortimer hung back. Sophia viewed her approach with dread and slowed her own progress, but Mrs. Mortimer, it appeared, was determined and stopped completely, waiting for Sophia to draw near.
“You appear happy here, Miss Cavanaugh,” she began, touching her perfectly coiffed hair. “You must be most indebted to our family for finding you such an agreeable situation.”
Sophia feared a verbal trap was being sprung and simply nodded.
“Is it not then a poor show of appreciation to dally with my son’s affections?” she glowered.
Sophia was caught off guard by such a direct reproach. Usually the gentry were much more discreet in their conversations. She must be absolutely furious. “I . . .” she began.
“Do not deny it!” Mrs. Mortimer spat out, eyes narrowed to slits. “Let me explain how the world works for you. There are distinct social principles that divide the classes. Under no circumstances should these be crossed!” Sophia stepped back. “Charles is destined for great things, and as my only son, certain conduct is expected of him. My grandchildren must be the progeny of both a mother and father of the highest bloodline to honor our family’s good name and standing in society. The children of a governess will not do! Do I make myself clear?” She waited for no response before ploughing on.
“Charles is weak when it comes to matters of the heart, and you are a distraction. He does not know his own mind and is easily persuaded by a pretty face. It is his duty to marry a woman of fortune and title, and therefore his history must not be besmirched by a dalliance with a servant. If you care for him at all, you must relinquish him.” She stopped and planted herself directly in front of Sophia. “Do I have your promise to give him up?”
Righteous indignation had swelled during this scolding and now rose like a genie from a bottle within Sophia, knowing as she did the heritage of the woman berating her. She was torn between calling Mrs. Mortimer out as the worst of hypocrites, which would cause Charles more grief, or agreeing with her to smooth his path. Though she felt the flame of shame burning on her cheeks, her discomfort did not deter the woman or appeal to her sympathies. Rather, Charles’s mother bore down with all the authority she could muster to pressure her into compliance. The challenge merely emboldened Sophia, though she decided that she would keep her counsel on Mrs. Mortimer’s ancestry for Charles’s sake.

Let the Ghosts Speak ~ Review

Let the Ghosts Speak
By Bryan Davis

Justin Trotter seems like your average hard-working individual. But as we get into the book, we learn that he and his twin sister Justice were sent from England to France following the execution of their father and their mother's disappearance. The book appears to be a journal of Justin's life in Paris and addressed to his mother.

Justin has become friends with Marc Noël, a young man of means who insists that Justin join a party that his mother is hosting in a soon to be destroyed abandoned schoolhouse. Reluctantly Justin agrees, the deciding factor being his infatuation with Marc's sister Francine. It is an invitation Justin may regret for the rest of his life accepting.

Let the Ghosts Speak is a tad slow at the opening, but all too soon, the tone shifts as the party Justin is invited to becomes a meeting of the most interesting characters and is highlighted by murder. And due to an unfortunate chain of events, Justin finds himself the prime suspect. And the only individuals who believe in Justin's innocence are four beings who have come back from the grave.

Let the Ghosts Speak is one book that will keep you from putting it down. As the story progresses, the suspense continues to climb. Doubt is cast on several as to being the potential killer. But can Justin trust his own memories of events when he is speaking and listening to ghosts? Do they genuinely have his best interests at heart? Or are they figments of a mind teetering on the very edge of sanity?

Those who are familiar with Bryan Davis's previous works are in for something different from him. This is a standalone book that is easy to get into and has a clearly defined ending. There is not a dragon present in this work, and it has a contemplative thread through it that speaks to the reader as plainly as the ghosts talk to Justin. All too often, we are blind to what we don't want to see, we allow our heart and mind to not see the truths that others see clearly. Highly recommended enjoyable reading and, in my opinion, perhaps the author's best work to date, at least of the books I've read.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Supernatural suspense set in 1860 Paris.

In nineteenth-century Paris, Justin Trotter, an immigrant from England, is making his way as a book translator while paying for his blind twin sister's care. One evening, Marc Noël, Justin's well-to-do friend and fellow thespian, invites him to a masquerade party at an abandoned schoolhouse. Justin hopes this will be an opportunity to get to know Marc's lovely though sharp-tongued sister, Francine.

At the event, Justin meets four ghostly strangers—two adults and two children—who warn him that the party guests are in danger and must leave at once. True to their prediction, a murder takes place, and Justin is the prime suspect. He escapes and becomes a fugitive, hiding in the Paris catacombs.

Mystery and intrigue swirl as the ghost of Joan of Arc and other martyrs guide Justin on a lonely journey to prove his innocence and protect his sister from an abusive caretaker. Who really committed the crime? Marc? Francine? A ghost? And does seeing these ghosts mean he is going insane? Maybe he really is the murderer after all.

There is only one way to find out, let the ghosts speak as they reveal the mysteries within Justin's mind.
