Lucy the Dinosaur ~ Series Review

Lucy the Dinosaur!
By Joey Ahlbum

Lucy the Dinosaur! is a delightful series of books that appeal to young children.  And of even greater appeal to mom and dad as their children are entertained while learning lessons with Lucy.

In Nice to Meet You! we are introduced to Lucy and her friends.  Lucy's friends are a diverse group who agree that "everything's better when shared with good friends!"

In Count with Me 1, 2, 3 Lucy takes your child on a outdoor adventure where insects (such as butterflies, ladybugs and ants) are a fun and colorful learning experience as the numbers 1 through 10 are introduced.

In Learning Opposites Lucy teaches about words that are the opposite of each other.  The book is written with a rhyming rhythm that will capture the attention of young listeners/readers as words like hot and cold, up and down, day and night are contrasted.

In Summer Games Lucy and her friends spend the day playing games and enjoying the outdoors on a summer day.  Skateboarding and other fun dinosaur games are played and Lucy declares at the end that they are all champions!

In Day at the Beach Lucy and her friends spend the day playing at the beach where they make a new friend and learn the value of not judging others by their appearance.

In Playtime Fun Lucy and her friends spend the day outside playing and having fun.  When the day is done Lucy goes home and tells her family about the day she's had.

I was provided a digital copy of each of the above books for the purpose of reviewing them in exchange for my honest review.

The Militant Genome ~ Review

The Militant Genome
by Braxton DeGarmo

The Militant Genome is a action packed story that looks at an often ignored "dirty little secret" of America's past that as this book points out isn't really in our past.  Having not too long ago come across a newspaper article (from 1915) discussing the Eugenics laws that were becoming quite prominent in the early 1900s. Yes, that's right Eugenic laws in the USA (which I didn't have discussed in any US History class or book, by the way).

Bring this mindset into the 21st century with our advancements in science especially in the medical field and you get The Militant Genome.  Imagine that instead of just denying people the right to marry and have children during the dawn of the 20th century lawmakers could have instead wiped out of existence anyone deemed unsuitable by means of genetic manipulation.  Would they have used this weapon of genocide?

Well, the Colonel (not his name) the man behind the Missouri White Alliance (MWA) has no such compunction and is willing to use his influence in the field of genetics to create a weapon that will create what in his opinion is the "solution to the world's biggest problems."

When a young man is murdered in the hospital and he is linked to a murdered foreign diplomat, racial tensions quickly rise to the breaking point in St. Louis.  Doctor Sarah Wade and Detective Seamus O'Connor are caught up in the chaos when a rogue member of the MWA decides to make a statement by kidnapping Sarah's best friend Della Winston, a woman who could identify the killer!

All too soon it is a race against time to stop an act of genocide on American soil.  But someone is determined to silence anyone who may have information that can stop this act of terror.

Braxton DeGarmo has created a believable bioterror-thriller that will keep you up into the wee hours of the morning with the refrain of "Just one more chapter and then I'll put it down" going through your head.  But that one more chapter will never come until you get to the last page and hope for a sequel.

I was provided a copy of this book by TBCN and the author Braxton DeGarmo in exchange for my honest and fair review.

About the book:
A master gene for race? Geneticists say such a thing doesn't exist. However, the Colonel, founder of the Missouri White Alliance, has devised a genetic weapon capable of devastating dark-skinned peoples globally. He is only weeks, maybe days away from implementing his viral version of racial cleansings "final solution." There's only one threat to his plan -- a hotheaded member of the MWA has become the target of a nationwide police search for murder and the kidnapping of local celebrity Della Winston ... and the unwanted attention risks bringing federal scrutiny to the previously unknown white supremacy group. Sarah Wade, MD, has enough stress as a senior Emergency Medicine resident. She never expected that her discovery of a murdered medical student would inadvertently jeopardize her career. Or that the next-day murder of a Nigerian diplomat would lead to the kidnapping of her best friend, Della Winston. The cascade of events pull her -- and Seamus O'Connor, the detective assigned to the high-profile medical center murder -- into a life-threatening conspiracy of murder, kidnapping, and rising racial tensions.

"The Militant Genome" is a medical thriller set is St. Louis and written from a Christian worldview. Woven into the story are themes about the evil of racism, the threats of biotechnology, and one's eternal destiny. The story begins as Sarah Wade, MD, a senior resident in Emergency Medicine, takes her Advanced Trauma Life Support credentialing course and discovers that her surrogate patient, a medical student, is a real stabbing victim. Sgt. Seamus and his partner draw the case and begin their investigation. Within twenty-four hours, Sarah's life is turned inside out -- her career is threatened by false charges from the pompous, egotistical Chief of Trauma; a visiting Nigerian diplomat is murdered outside a popular restaurant on the riverfront; and the only witness to see the killer's face, Sarah's life-long best friend, Della Winston, is kidnapped outside a local club. Meanwhile, from across the country, the events in St. Louis are being followed with concern by the Colonel.

He is part of a university medical research team presenting their work on Alzheimer's Disease to a major symposium. During the day, he has helped discover a major breakthrough in the cause and potential treatment of the disease. Outside the lab, he leads a previously unknown white supremacy group, the Missouri White Alliance, based in the Ozarks. With his like-minded technicians, they have found a way to re-engineer a promising treatment for the skin cancer melanoma into a viral weapon that attacks dark-skinned peoples. By combining that virus with a virulent strain of influenza, he hopes to cause worldwide racial genocide to honor his grandfather, a Klu Klux Klan Grand Wizard during his life, and to avenge the murders of his wife and daughter at the hands of black home invaders. However, he has received word that the man who killed the diplomat is not just one of his men but his nephew. The intense police and federal investigation into that killing threatens to unveil his group and derail his plans. The story explores the issue of racism not just via the major plot line about racial genocide, but also through the unexpected relationship that develops between Sarah and Seamus. She is African-American and he is as white and Irish as they come. They have their Catholic backgrounds as common ground, but nothing more. The potential threat of biotechnology in the wrong hands should be apparent. The definition of genome is "a full set of chromosomes; all the inheritable traits of an organism." The genome is God's blueprint for life. Leave it to man's "tinkering" to lead to trouble. The theme of eternal destiny becomes an important turning point in the story. Let's not spoil it by giving away anything more.

About the Author:
Braxton can't lay claim to wanting to be a writer all his life, although his mother and seventh grade English teacher were convinced he had what it would take. He went to Duke University, earned a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Engineering with a major in Bio-Medical Engineering, and found his way into medical school at the University of Cincinnati. Following a residency in Emergency Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center, he served tours as the Chief, Emergency Medical Services at Fort Campbell, KY and as a research Flight Surgeon at Fort Rucker, AL. Who had time to write?

By the late 1990's, his professional and family life had settled down, somewhat, and his mother once again took up her mantra, "Write a book. You're a good writer." Yet, with no experience in writing anything other than technical articles, he hesitated to try his hand at fiction. That changed in 1997 when the local newspaper held a writing contest for Valentine's Day. Out of 1100 entries, he made it to the top five finalists and realized that maybe he could write fiction after all.

The next ten years saw him learning the craft of writing through local writers' groups, seminars, critique groups and more. "The Militant Genome" (©July 2012) marks his first formal publication. "Indebted" (©January 2013) is now out,and "Identity" will be released later in the spring of 2013.

Fifteen years after that first hesitant start, he can't find enough time to write as much as he'd like. He now lives in Missouri with his wife, Paula. Their two children are grown and with three grandchildren nearby, "Papa" wears a number of hats.

First Date ~ Review

First Date
The Dating Games #1
By Melody Carlson

I have to admit I was intrigued about the premise behind the Dating Games (DG).  Having gone to a High School where dating wasn't allowed, dancing was a 4 letter word, uniforms were uniform, and six inches between students was enforced with ruler wielding teachers I was looking forward to experiencing the trials and troubles of a group of high school girls trying to get their first date.

Though the goal of these girls was to get a date in time for the dance it quickly became something more as they developed deep friendships with one another.  They got to know one another as people on a personal level, not based on their preconceived ideas from before starting up their group/club/friendship.

I guess that was what I liked best about First Date was the friendship that the girls formed.  I also liked that they valued that above the dating aspect of their club.  It took them awhile to see that the friendship was what they really got out of the DG and that dating isn't as great as they had originally thought.

When 5 girls with different opinions about boys and dating decide to form a club and get their first "real" dates you know trouble is just waiting to make an appearance.  But that's where friends come in!

I was provided a copy of this title by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Available October 2013 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.

When it comes to catching the eye of that cute boy at school, sometimes you just need a little help from your friends.
Devon, Emma, Cassidy, Bryn, and Abby have one thing in common as they start their sophomore year: none of them have ever been on a "real" date. With homecoming looming, the girls make a pact and start a secret club they call the DG (Dating Games) that has just one objective--dates for the dance.

They're sworn to secrecy, but the club is their way to set each other up on their first dates so they can report back to the DG. They'll have to navigate expectations and rules from their parents, figure out how to act on a date, and endear themselves to the guys they like.

What could possibly go wrong?

Winter in Full Bloom ~ Review

WINTER
IN
FULL BLOOM

by Anita Higman

I was provided a copy of this lovely book by TBCN and author Anita Higman in exchange for my fair and honest review.  And I have to be honest I wanted to review this book just from the cover.  A beautiful winter scene with a garden in bloom - who could resist such a scene? Well, not I!

And the story is equally delightful and at the same time also heartbreaking.  Two families divided and a chance to reunite unless the hurts of the past continue to keep them apart.  Having read Anita's Where God Finds You I was anticipating a book that would capture my imagination and hold it and I was not disappointed in Winter in Full Bloom.

Lily Winter is a woman who grows on her journey to find the sister she never knew she had and along the way she discovers something she had lost a sense of her own worth.  Her determination to find Camille is just the answer Camille has been looking for and together these two sisters - these twins, will find the healing and belonging that they have desired and just may be what their bitter mother needs.

There is a secondary story which is vital to explaining Lily's state of mind when the story begins.  And Lily's friendship with Marcus Averill (the Aussie who helps her search for Camille) is a means of bringing healing to a hurting person and perhaps his own family.

I totally loved this book and am really hoping for a sequel dealing with Camille!

About Winter in Full Bloom:
Lily Winter's wings are folded so tightly around her daughter that when empty nest arrives, she feels she can no longer fly. But Lily's lonely, widowed life changes in a heartbeat when she goes to visit a woman who is almost a stranger to her - a woman who also happens to be her mother. During their fiery reunion, her mother reveals a dark family secret that she'd been hiding for decades - Lily has an identical twin sister who was put up for adoption when they were just babies. Without looking back, Lily - with her fear of flying -boards a jumbo jet and embarks on a quest to find her sister which leads halfway around the world to Melbourne, Australia. Befriended by imprudent Aussie, he might prove to be the key to finding her sister. But her journey becomes a circle that leads her back home to attempt a family reunion and to find the one dream she no longer imagined possible - the chance to fall in love again.

ANITA HIGMAN Bestselling and award-winning author, has over thirty books published (several coauthored) for adults and children. Excerpt:
When do you know it is the right time to bust loose from the 9 to 5 JOB? Do you have what it takes to really make a go of this opportunity we call a home-based business? What if you give up your job and things don’t work out as you planned? These questions and more come to mind when you first begin to consider if owning your own business is right for you.
Right up front you need to look at the numbers. Read the details. A visit to the US Small Business Administration website reveals that 66% of start-up businesses are still operational after 2 years, while only 50% of those remaining will survive another 2 years. Furthermore after an additional 2 years only 40% of those remaining will continue to be serving the needs of the public. This means that after six years out of 100 businesses that opened their doors only about 13 will still be in business.
One thing I want to clarify here though is the fact that just because they are not in business after six years, those that are not operational could have closed for many other reasons than failure. On the contrary, this could mean that they were so successful that they wisely put together an “Exit Plan” and sold their thriving business or they may have moved or retired. Any number of reasons could account for this low number of viable businesses surviving for a mere six years.
Nevertheless, how do you keep from becoming just another statistic? Looking at the reasons start-up businesses fail will help you understand better what it will take for you to succeed.
Business owners who take the time to sit down and pen a business plan greatly increase their chances of survival. Why? The simple answer is that a business plan not only gives you direction but it details the way you will accomplish each phase of the business development. When you need additional funding what a financial institution is looking for is a clear statement of what you plan to offer and how you plan to take your idea from concept to delivery. Besides these reasons a well thought out business plan will help keep you on the track. It should be—and will be—your roadmap to success.
Insufficient funding is another reason businesses fail. With the business plan in place additional funding can be sought through investors and financial institutions. Consider applying for a small business loan through sources that are there to help you. Angel Investors is one source other than governmental assistance that you might apply to for support if you need additional backing. It is advisable to have at least two years of funding set aside in case things don’t progress quite how you had planned.
As I often recommend, do your homework. Know your market and your competition. Is there even a market for your product or service? Decide who your target market is. Will you offer a product or service that should be geared to a local customer or will your business be better suited for the Internet community? Be sure that you have the proper education and experience to run a business. Lack in these areas can, and often does, lead to poor decision making which can cost you dearly in the end.
On the other side of the coin are the issues that lead to success. Do you have what it takes to be successful? Do you have that education? A proper education enables you to not only make good decisions but ensures you have the base knowledge to skillfully operate a business. Maturity is helpful here as well. With maturity comes the knowledge of how to handle difficulties with finesse. You may also have the resources in place to assist you in case of an unforeseen obstacle may rear its ugly head. Mature business owners, not necessarily the maturity of age, are able to focus on the goal and commitment to success. Actually talent can be a factor here as well. Do you have the natural talent and ability in place to achieve your goals?
Know when and how to expand your business, how to located suppliers and to spend within your budget. Many home based businesses are initially started for emotional reasons. Because many are started with no plan in place and very little start-up capital the home based business is at risk. However, due to the lower expenses many home based businesses are beating the odds and surviving past the expected norms.
So, know what you are in for, be prepared to take the necessary action to achieve your goal and commit to success and you will most likely beat the odds and join the ranks of the successful home based business owners.

The Diaries of Pontius Pilate ~ Review

The Diaries of Pontius Pilate
By Joseph Max Lewis

It seemed like a standard archeological dig along the shores of the Dead Sea until they unearthed an artifact that certain people want to stay buried forever.  First a member of the auxiliary staff is murdered - just an unfortunate occurrence until a highly trained group of assassins attacks their camp.

As Doctors Kevin Elliot and Jill Gates attempt to save these most precious artifacts that seem to have ties to Pontius Pilate they are also in struggle to survive against an unknown powerful foe determined to stop them no matter what!  But the question is why are a bunch of copper scrolls and an ancient piece of wood worth sending out assassins around the world - what is on these ancient artifacts that someone wants to destroy them and any and all who have had contact with them?  The truths that have been buried for nearly 2,000 years could change the world and someone is very worried if the truth gets out.

The Diaries of Pontius Pilate is a thrilling adventure that is sure to keep your eyes glued to the pages of your book until the very end.  This book was described as an Indiana Jones style reading experience and it is indeed such a book.  But it is set in a modern setting, unlike Indiana Jones, and technological gadgetry that is used helps add to the drama and suspense. (Unlike Indiana Jones no one melts being exposed to the artifacts - BIG plus in my opinion!) There is another Lost Ark similarity but I can't say what without giving something away - and it is good, believe me.

There are two groups at work one trying to stop Kevin and Jill and another trying help them.  But how are two hunted archeologists to know the difference?  Finding out just may save their lives...

If you want more excitement pick up a copy of The Diaries of Pontius Pilate today and enjoy the adventure.  This is a book that should appeal to most readers unless you don't like adventure, excitement, and a touch of romance in your books.

Check-out my interview with author Joseph Max Lewis here.

Interview with author Joseph Max Lewis

INTERVIEW WITH JOSEPH MAX LEWIS author of THE DIARIES OF PONTIUS PILATE

1) If you had to describe “The Diaries of Pontius Pilate” in 3 or 4 words, what would they be?

Tom Clancy meets Frank Peretti. Oopps, that’s five.

2) Which main character in The Diaries of Pontius Pilate do you see as being the most closely based on you or someone you know? (Such as having a favorite food, a saying that only that person says, etc.)

Only Professor Pearl Jesky, who’s kind of a composite of a couple “older sister” type female friends I have. The others are figments.

3) As a writer whose writings have most influenced you?

Maybe the late Walter Wager, an old school Thriller writer, because I cut my teeth as a reader with Wager’s paperbacks - Viper Three, Swap and other classics.  I know you’re supposed to say Joseph Conrad or Harper Lee and prove you’re a “serious” writer, but there you go.

4) Did you have to do much research for this book, or did you use previously obtained knowledge from your former professions?

About fifty fifty. I was familiar with military tactics, Israel, the Negev and the Dead Sea. I did a fair amount of research into carbon dating, tramp steamers and the Mobile area.

5) Do you have another book in the works? If so will it be a similar theme as in an archaeological thriller or something totally different?

In April we released a small collection of legal suspense short stories - Just Verdicts - that have been well received.  The sequel to Diaries, which was complete when I started the final edit, is now almost complete. Looks like I have to write another ending. It is a Thriller.  However, this novel revolves around journalism, not archaeology.  Many of the good guys and bad guys we met in Diaries return.

6) If you could write a book with another author, who would you like to work with?

Since Mr. Wager’s passed on, I’d say Dean Koontz.

Check-out my review of The Diaries of Pontius Pilate here.

Book Blurb:

The Diaries of Pontius Pilate opens when a member of an archeological team is murdered along the shores of the Dead Sea. We learn that the murderer and victim are both spies, observing the expedition and grappling with the fact that the team has just discovered some controversial artifacts. In fact, Archaeologist Kevin Elliot and his Deputy, Jill Gates have unearthed twenty copper scrolls etched with the results of Pontius Pilate’s year long criminal investigation into the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They manage to open one scroll far enough to take a series of digital photographs of the writings and email them to a Professor of Ancient Latin for translation. Unaware of the scrolls content, Kevin and Jill are unprepared when they’re caught between an ancient conspiracy of global power that’s determined to destroy the scrolls along with everyone connected to them, and a small, fledgling volunteer group, the only force on earth that stands between Kevin, Jill and certain death.
