Joey ~ Review

Joey
How a Blind Rescue Horse Helped Others Learn to See
by Jennifer Marshall Bleakley

Be sure you have a box of tissues nearby before starting moving story. Opening on a scene that will touch even the hardest of hearts Joey's story is one of triumph over adversity. A story of hope, of friendship, and of overcoming.

Joey was a lost horse, one who when his career ended drifted from situation to situation until he ended up in a place where he was neglected. With his future in doubt, he was found in time. But a horse who comes from an abusive situation and is blind is hard to place. But Joey and the new Hope Reins were potentially a perfect fit but could a damaged horse help children who were equally damaged?

I have to say I fell in love with Joey and his pasture companion Speckles (another rescue). But the pain that these two suffered didn't break them. Together they formed a special bond with one another one and with their handlers.  Both Joy and Speckles needed special TLC due to the previous situations that they found themselves in. This is the story of their second chance.

This is a book that will touch the heart of anyone who has a love for animals. And the way children respond to Joey is both moving and heartbreaking. Moving that they were able to connect and heal. Heartbreaking that they had to suffer as they did. Having my own rescue pets (horses too) the synopsis of this book attracted me and the front cover was an instant draw. Who wouldn't love Joey! As I stated before have tissues ready you will need it at times but this is one book you don't want to miss. If you have a book club that leans towards true-life readings this is a perfect selection.

About the Book:
The heartwarming true story of a blind horse named Joey.
At the height of his show career, this beautiful Appaloosa’s majestic stature, strength, and willingness to work made him the perfect partner. But when an injury cost Joey his show career, he moved from one owner to the next, ultimately experiencing severe abuse and neglect. A rescue group found Joey nearly dead from starvation—and blind.

Then he came to Hope Reins—a ranch dedicated to helping hurting kids who had been abused, emotionally wounded, or unwanted. By teaching these children to care for rescued animals, the Hope Reins staff were convinced they could reach kids with love and hope and show them that we are never forgotten by God.

But could the financially struggling ranch afford to take care of a blind horse that no one else wanted? Could Joey somehow learn to trust people even though the world had hurt him so badly? And what would happen—to Joey, the kids, and Hope Reins—if they failed?

A true story of friendship destined to become a classic, Joey will touch your heart and reveal the power of finding light in the darkness.

High Treason ~ Review

High Treason
FBI Task Force #3
By DiAnn Mills

FBI Special Agent Kord Davidson and CIA operative Monica Alden are less than pleased when an attempt on the life of Saudi Prince Omar bin Talal forces interagency cooperation with them working together. Kord knows that the Prince will not appreciate a woman on his protection detail. And Monica prefers working alone especially after an unfortunate incident in the past.

Hoping to slow the cancer that is threatening his mother's life Prince Omar bin Talal, along with two of his sisters, has come to Houston seeking medical treatment. But the visit is two-fold as the Prince hopes to bolster US-Saudi relations while decreasing his country's dependence on the oil export market. Unfortunately, someone seems determined to stop him and they don't care who gets caught in the crossfire.

The only question is who is behind this attack - is it internal or external? And will foreign relations deteriorate before the truth can be uncovered? As Kord and Monica work together, the list of who they can trust grows shorter. But with cultural factors in play uncovering who they can trust may be almost impossible. Kord depends on his years of friendship with the Prince while Monica depends upon her quick analytical thinking and her personal distance from all involved.

With clues and evidence, Kord and Monica make progress but some things just aren't adding up to a complete picture.  Time is against them as the would-be-assassin stays one step ahead of them. With Monica looking at those closest to the Prince and Kord looking beyond they hope to meet dead center before all involved are dead.

High Treason has it all - weather, cultural distrust, interagency positioning, betrayal, romance, illness, secrets. This case may force all involved to see beyond what they know in order to wrap it up with a minimum of loss of life.

Those familiar with DiAnn Mills will feel right at home from the opening page. And someone will get the girl this time she has choices. Faith is an important facet of Monica's life while Kord is searching. It is interesting to see how Prince Omar bin Talal and his family and staff deal with Western living and specifically Monica. If you want suspense this book will give it to you and just may be a hindrance to sleep at least until the last page is turned.

About the Book:
When Saudi Prince Omar bin Talal visits Houston to seek cancer treatment for his mother, an attempt on his life puts all agencies on high alert. FBI Special Agent Kord Davidson is the lead on the prince’s protective detail because of their long-standing friendship, but he’s surprised—and none too happy—when the CIA brings one of their operatives, Monica Alden, in on the task force after the assassination attempt.

Kord and Monica must quickly put aside interagency squabbles, however, when they learn the prince has additional motives for his visit—plans to promote stronger ties with the US and encourage economic growth and westernization in his own country. Plans that could easily incite a number of suspects both in the US and in countries hostile to Saudi Arabia. Worse yet, the would-be assassin always seems to be one step ahead of them, implicating someone close to the prince—or the investigation. But who would be willing to commit high treason, and can Kord and Monica stop them in time?

The Empowered ~ Review

The Empowered
A Trevor Black Novel #2
By Craig Parshall

Trevor Black is planning on spending some quality time with his college-aged daughter Heather. But then he gets a call from Dick Valentine regarding the death of Jason Forester. Forester's death appears to be natural causes but someone who wants to remain anonymous has expressed concerns about this death. And those concerns target Forester's death as being the result of voodoo.

Death by voodoo? Most might scoff at such a claim but not Trevor and when he is presented with an opportunity to speak at an ABA convention in New Orleans, he takes it as a sign that he is supposed to take this case. With Heather tagging along he makes the trip to New Orleans and finds an even more complicated web of cases that may have ties to his now deceased  Assistant US Attorney.

But soon Trevor finds himself targeted by supernatural forces that seem determined to keep him from exposing the truth. And when he framed for a horrific murder he knows he has to get Heather out of New Orleans, but she has disappeared. With the other disappearances, Trevor fears for the life and the soul of his daughter. What follows is a look into the dark underside of the city one that is ruled by those who live not in the physical world but the spiritual and they are more than happy to pervert all that they can.

The Empowered is a high-powered suspense that will keep the reader gripping the book as the pages flip by. Yes, it is a little intense at times so sensitive readers may want to avoid reading within an hour or two of bed. And this book doesn't shy away from current issues that should concern all readers. fans of Speculative and suspense fiction have just met the newest attention grabber for their to-be-read list. Those who have enjoyed Frank Peretti and James Rubart might want to give this one a try. Haven't read the first Trevor Black novel (The Occupied) that's okay I haven't either and had no problem getting caught up in this book, so read on.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Tyndale House Publishers with no expectation of a positive review ~ All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Just when a mysterious death in Washington, DC, appears to have voodoo connections rooted in New Orleans, Trevor Black also receives an invitation to speak at the national ABA convention in the city.

He knows he’ll be in enemy territory, both as a disbarred attorney and as a follower of Jesus, but he determines to travel there and confront the supernatural element. Right after a grisly murder in his hotel room puts him on the suspect list, his daughter disappears, leaving a note that suggests a connection to the local cult religion. Now Trevor must not only crack the case but try to protect Heather from forces of darkness clutching at her soul as well. And just as he discovers that his ability to sniff out the supernatural has its limitations, Trevor learns that this web of evil extends far beyond isolated murders, enslaving scores of innocent children, with its head perhaps linked to the highest seats of power.

And to make it even worse Masonville High has had an uncommonly high number of student suicides - 8 since September and the school year has several more months to go.

Fans of Frank Peretti, Billy Coffey, and Chuck Black will enjoy this book which promises at the conclusion to be the first in a series. This is a battle between good and evil that takes place in the spiritual realm just outside of our perceivable visual range. Owen has no belief in such things but for reasons unknown to him he can see into the spiritual. This book is most definitely one for the older teen/YA and adult reader just because of some of the situations are not appropriate for younger readers.

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations of a positive review ~ All opinions expressed are my own.

Crisis Shot ~ Review with Author Q & A

Crisis Shot
Line of Duty #1
By Janice Cantore

Tess O'Rourke wants to be a good cop just like her father and grandfather were. And she dreams of becoming the first female chief of police with the Long Beach Police Department. But in a split second decision, her entire life comes crashing down around her.

Responding to an emergency call from a fellow officer in the early hours of the day Tess is forced to make a decision that costs a young man his life. And though she saved a fellow officer Tess found herself vilified by the local media and painted as an "incident waiting to happen". With Long Beach in turmoil and the lives of her fellow officers in danger with her proximity, Tess is faced with a choice - retire or seek police work somewhere else.

Not willing to quit Tess finds work in Rogue's Hollow, a small community in Oregon. But small town doesn't mean her job is easy. Resentment over her big city ties, being a woman, and her shooting incident all combine to make her new life a tad trying.

When a murder occurs and the local pastor's wife goes missing Tess has her hands full with small town politics and potential clues that just don't add up. There is more going on in Rogue's Hollow than meets the eye and Tess has to untangle all the loose threads to find which one leads to the truth. With the help of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Deputy Steve Logan, Tess hopes to find Anna Macpherson in time and before she finds her job again on the line.

Crisis Shot is the first book in a new series by Janice Cantore and if this first book is any indication the Line of Duty series will be another winner. The characters are believable - some would love to get to know personally while others one would just as soon show them the door. Cantore has a way giving life to the written word that doesn't feel forced. And her books are from the headline stories that capture the reader's attention from page one. And I'll be honest I did not anticipate the identity of the perpetrator before the answer was revealed in the book - so high marks for keeping the suspense going throughout.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Tyndale House Publishers with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Tess O’Rourke dreams of becoming the first female chief of police in Long Beach, California. As commander of the East Division, she is well on her way . . . until the night she responds to an officer-needs-assistance call and fatally shoots an unarmed teenager. Despite being cleared of wrongdoing by a grand jury, Tess is so hounded by the public that she takes a job in Oregon to escape the bad press.

Winning over the residents of Rogue’s Hollow might be more difficult than adjusting to her new role as police chief in the small, backwater town. Especially when her closest friend, the pastor’s wife, goes missing and the woman’s cousin is found shot. Tess finds an ally in sheriff’s deputy Steve Logan, but as they track down Rogue’s Hollow’s first murderer, she worries that she’s breaking one of her rules and getting too close to him.

Author Q and A:
1. What inspired you to begin your new series, The Line of Duty?
My initial desire was to place a crime novel in a small-town setting. Since I now live in a small town, a lot of factors intrigued me about the setting. Everyone seems to know everyone else here, much more than in Long Beach. There really is a sense of community. Here, arrests are still printed in the local newspaper and everyone seems to know the troublemakers and the misfits. Also, people here seem more likely to help their neighbors. There is more of a permanent atmosphere in town, not a transient one.

As far as Tess O’Rourke is concerned, she popped up out of all the negative news that police officers seem to be getting nowadays. I very much wanted to tell the other side of the story in regards to controversial shootings, kind of behind the sensational headlines. The media too often twists the facts.

2. How do you expect book one, Crisis Shot, to resonate with your audience? What are you most excited for your readers to experience through reading this novel?
First, I hope they realize that police officers are human beings, and it is not fair, after a shooting or controversial arrest, to ascribe motives to them before all the facts are in. “Innocent until proven guilty” applies to cops as well as criminals. And then I hope readers experience and appreciate the struggle for Tess to get back to work at the job she loves, trying to prove herself all over again to a group of cops who might think she’s not up to the job.

3. How did your personal experience as a police officer influence the story in Crisis Shot?
When I worked in uniform, I learned quickly how fast things happen, and how distorted they get when interpreted by people who have no idea what it’s like to work in uniform in hostile areas, or walk up to a car on a dark night, or rush to a shots call where no one can really say what’s going on.

4. What role does faith play in the story?
Tess will tell you that she lost her faith. Her father was killed in the line of duty, and Tess feels betrayed by God. Oliver is a pastor and in a similar situation as Tess, but he leans into his faith, not away from it.

Bottom line, God is still God no matter the valleys we travel through, and while faith is essential, it is not a shield against pain and heartbreak in this world.

5. In the opening scene of Crisis Shot, Officer Tess O’Rourke is forced to shoot an unarmed teenager to protect a fellow officer. Many Americans have seen similar shooting incidents in their own communities or reported in the media. How do you hope your novel might inform your readers as they respond to these situations?
The media often embellishes a police shooting to fit a narrative. For some reason the narrative has been that the officer is wrong, racist, trigger-happy . . . take your pick. And media sources perpetuate falsehoods to validate their narrative— for example, for two weeks we saw people on cable networks, sports teams, and talk shows do the “Hands up, don’t shoot” gesture after the Ferguson shooting of Michael Brown, when that, in fact, wasn’t what happened before the shooting. For some reason the media kept pushing the idea that Brown was standing with his hands up and saying “Don’t shoot” when the officer fired, but eyewitnesses under oath said that never happened. All this did was inflame people, and the officer, who was exonerated for the shooting, lost his job. With Tess and her shooting, I want people to see that it is never as cut-and-dried as the media will try to spin it. Officers have split seconds to make life-or-death decisions. Hesitation gets cops killed. If nothing else, I hope Crisis Shot will help people realize that cops deserve to be considered innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around.

6. How can we support law enforcement working in our communities?
A friendly wave as they go through the neighborhood, maybe a letter to the editor saying that you think they do a good job if that is the case. Let’s face it, no one likes getting a ticket, but that is one of the cops’ jobs, and if you did break a traffic law . . . sorry.

7. What is the best advice or encouragement you have received either personally or professionally?
I am encouraged every Sunday in church by my pastor. For the past few months he has been teaching through the book of Hebrews. The emphasis is faith, the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not yet seen. Holding tight to faith in God is the best advice/encouragement I’ve ever gotten.

8. What can your readers expect from The Line of Duty books two and three?
Well, of course, Tess will get into trouble and scrapes and work her way out with smarts and toughness—and the help of her supporting cast.

The Promise of Breeze Hill ~ Review

The Promise of Breeze Hill
A Natchez Trace Novel #1
By Pam Hillman

If there is one thing for certain it is that the Natchez Trace is dangerous and Isabella Bartholomew's family knows this. With the murder of her brother and a fire that has incapacitated her father Isabella needs help with their plantation. And fortunately, she is able to secure the skills of Connor O'Shea.

And unfortunately for Connor O'Shea, Isabella Bartholomew bought his papers of indenture. The last thing he wants is to find himself working for a lady of property who will again ruin his life on a whim. But Connor needs the work to bring his brothers over from Ireland.

Connor's carpentry skills are just what Isabella needs to repair the damage done to her home. But Breeze Hill Plantation needs much more than a rebuilt wing. And Connor finds himself filling a much larger role than what he had agreed to. And spending more time with Isabella is not high on his list of tasks but her father has allowed her to assume much of his responsibility in his stead.

But soon the danger, that targeted travelers, seems to be focused on Breeze Hill and the Bartholomew family. Is there a reason they've targeted and were their past mishaps instead a deliberate attempt to destroy them?

The Promise of Breeze Hill is an interesting book with a few unexpected twists along the way. This book deals with various issues including loyalty, family, and slavery all of which were of utmost importance in how this story played out. Some characters one is instantly drawn to while others are almost instantly disliked and believe me the dislike factor doesn't abate as the story unfolds. As a series starting point, I'm interested to see where this series goes. And in case you're wondering this story does not end in a cliffhanger and in and of itself is complete.

This book would be an excellent choice for a book club and there are discussion questions included after the story as is a note by the author giving a bit of historical background concerning the setting. And those who have a fondness for early American history will enjoy this book. And if you were to judge a book by its cover this one is lovely, by the way.

Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book with the expectations of a positive review. All expressed opinions are my own.

About the Book:
Natchez, MS; 1791
Anxious for his brothers to join him on the rugged frontier along the Mississippi River, Connor O’Shea has no choice but to indenture himself as a carpenter in exchange for their passage from Ireland. But when he’s sold to Isabella Bartholomew of Breeze Hill Plantation, Connor fears he’ll repeat past mistakes and vows not to be tempted by the lovely lady.

The responsibilities of running Breeze Hill have fallen on Isabella’s shoulders after her brother was found dead in the swamps along the Natchez Trace and a suspicious fire devastated their crops, almost destroyed their home, and left her father seriously injured. Even with Connor’s help, Isabella fears she’ll lose her family’s plantation. Despite her growing feelings for the handsome Irish carpenter, she seriously considers accepting her wealthy and influential neighbor’s proposal of marriage.

Soon, though, Connor realizes someone is out to eliminate the Bartholomew family. Can he set aside his own feelings to keep Isabella safe?

Catching the Wind ~ Review

Catching the Wind
By Melanie Dobson

Catching the Wind is a beautiful story about the power of keeping a promise. This promise was one made nearly 80 years before and for Daniel Knight, time is running out. He is determined to keep Brigette, his childhood friend, safe and to see her again as he promised all those years ago before circumstance and war separated them.

This story takes the reader between the past and the present day as the search for Brigitte Berthold unfolds. Daniel and Brigitte escaped from the Gestapo who took their parents. But that is just the beginning of their journey as they make their way to England and safety. But the safety they hoped for was was not to be. And since the day Daniel last saw Brigitte he has wondered what became of her...

Seventy-seven years have passed and all Daniel's efforts to find his childhood friend have hit dead ends.  When Quenby Vaughn comes to Daniel's attention he is convinced that this young woman may be just who he needs. Quenby has a heart as her journalistic endeavors have shown and Daniel needs someone who will invest their heart in his search of a lifetime.

But convincing Quenby to take the job may be a tad difficult. And unfortunately for Lucas Hough he has been tasked with trying to get Quenby to accept the challenge. But Brigitte's story has a powerful pull and Quenby can't help but find herself intrigued by the mystery.

The mystery of Brigitte is about to coincide with a story that Quenby has been working on. A story that could very well expose a hidden secret, a secret that someone wants to keep hidden. And they are willing to do anything to stop Quenby and Lucas as they join forces in their search.

I have never read Melanie Dobson's work before and was thrilled to discover her work. She brings her characters to life. The back and forth between the past and the present is not detracting and just adds to the story's pull.  This book will appeal to those who love historical fiction with a very obvious thread of mystery that runs throughout. Also appealing is the gradual unveiling of Quenby's own story.

I was provided a complimentary review copy of this book by Tyndale House Publishers with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own

About the Book:
What happened to Brigitte Berthold?

That question has haunted Daniel Knight since he was thirteen, when he and ten-year-old Brigitte escaped the Gestapo agents who arrested both their parents. They survived a harrowing journey from Germany to England, only to be separated upon their arrival. Daniel vowed to find Brigitte after the war, a promise he has fought to fulfill for more than seventy years.

Now a wealthy old man, Daniel’s final hope in finding Brigitte rests with Quenby Vaughn, an American journalist working in London. He believes Quenby’s tenacity to find missing people and her personal investment in a related WWII espionage story will help her succeed where previous investigators have failed. Though Quenby is wrestling her own demons—and wary at the idea of teaming up with Daniel’s lawyer, Lucas Hough—the lure of Brigitte’s story is too much to resist. Together, Quenby and Lucas delve deep into the past, following a trail of deception, sacrifice, and healing that could change all of their futures.

Get ready for a tangled web that will keep this investigation on its toes. And when the investigators are targeted one has to wonder who will live to see the killer brought to justice.

I have to admit this is book definitely kept me guessing as each new piece of evidence pointed at a different suspect. The lies we keep are the ones that will eventually cost us the most and there are some real doozies in this newest book from DiAnn Mills. If you are looking for suspense you've found it here. If you don't want to stay up late into the night reading I recommend an early morning to start this book because this is definitely a "one more chapter before bed" type book.

Without Warning
A J.B. Collins Novel #3
By Joel C. Rosenberg

This time it is personal and it has come home - America is under attack, the first target, the nation's capital. One would think President Harrison Taylor would take the threats of Abu Khalif more seriously after being held hostage. But the President keeps brushing off concerns expressed by those with keeping him in the know.  And J.B. Collins is determined to let the nation know that contrary to the President's political grandstanding Abu Khalif is not on the run and is in fact about to fulfill his promise to bring down America and the infidel nations.

When successive attacks begin occurring across the nation, one strike is about to change J.B.'s life forever. Can a journalist use his investigative skills and his knowledge of Abu Khalif to help bring down the world's most deadly terrorist?

This book packs in a lot of action as J.B. comes to terms with his life as it now stands - his choices and his regrets. With lives on the line, he makes a decision that will take him back to the Middle East, where he will take part in the ultimate story - his own.

If you like non-stop suspense with a political twist you need to read this book - this series. Get ready for some unexpected twists before you experience a not to be forgotten ending. The Returning ~ Review with Author Q and A

The Returning
A Seer Novel #3
By Rachelle Dekker

She will risk everything to lead them out of darkness...

For 20 years Elise has had no idea who she is. She's been lied to. She's been told that her parents rejected her because she was different - because she was unable to be altered by the Genesis Serum.

But change is coming and the daughter that was stolen from Carrington and Remko Brant is about to discover the truth of who she is. And Elise's discovery is about to be the catalyst that will awaken the people of Authority City if she survives long enough to awaken to the truth of who she really is.

When the Light within Elise is awakened she has a gift to call to the light that has been forgotten by those who have fallen to the influence of either the Genesis Serum or the darkness that has entered the souls of those who rule. In this battle she is not alone, a group of seven has left the Seer city behind - chosen for this time - called to help restore the memory of what was.

The skip in time though not unexpected did leave a sizable gap in the story from the reader's perspective. What was Elise's childhood like? How did Jesse get from betrayer and "friend" of those outside Authority City to Authority President and what was his friendship with a younger Elise like? What was life for those living in Trylin City like? These are questions that unfortunately are only hinted at through passing thoughts or short conversations.  This time jump does not detract from the story or the series and even makes sense in that the main characters in this story Elise and Jesse needed to be older to fully grasp and appreciate the world that is on the verge of change and even fulfill their roles in the change.

This world is set more than 200 years in the future and the government system that was set into place to protect the citizens has shockingly become corrupted in its vision. Having read the previous two books it is interesting to watch how each book saw a different leader heading Authority City and each was under the influence of a darkness that seemed to grow as the books progress. It is also interesting to watch Carrington and Remko grow as people throughout the series. It is highly recommended that one read the books in order to fully appreciate and understand this world.

I was provided a complimentary review copy of this book by Tyndale House Publishers with no expectation of a positive review - all expressed opinions are my own.

About the Book:

They say the Awakening is coming.

That she’s the key.

But can she find her identity in the light
before she perishes in the dark?

Twenty years have passed since Carrington and Remko Brant’s baby, Elise, was kidnapped and they were forced to leave her captive in the Authority City. Though they fled with the Seers far from Authority reach, they’ve never given up hope of rescuing their daughter from the man who betrayed them. Now Authority President, he’s ushered the city into a new era of “peace”—one where the Scientist Roth Reynard’s Genesis Serum has eradicated all memory of emotion or rebellion.

But the mysterious Aaron and his Seers are once again on the move, threatening the illusion the Authority has worked so hard to build. As the Seers send seven chosen warriors to rescue Elise and bring restoration to the Authority City, the lines are drawn for a final battle between light and darkness. The key to ultimate victory may rest within the strangely powerful girl who has felt forgotten but was never abandoned—a truth she’ll need to wage war against the powerful forces of evil.

Author Q and A:

The theme of identity is explored in all three Seer books. How does forgiveness relate to identity?

For me, forgiveness is more about the one who feels wronged than the one who committed the wrong. What if, for a moment, you believed that nothing could harm you? That you, as a believer, are seated at the Father’s table and standing with him? Can anything harm the Father? If you believe no, then can anything harm you—the true you, the true spirited self? So then, forgiveness becomes more about letting go of false belief and stepping into the true identity that the Father gave to you. I know it’s radical, but belief like that could change the world, don’t you think?

The Returning focuses on Carrington and Remko’s daughter Elise. Tell us more about Elise’s character and her growth throughout the book.

Elise starts the book in a pretty dark place. She grew up without parents, believing she was abandoned, only to discover there’s an entire world that has been kept from her. Her journey can be divided into two parts, in my opinion: first, learning who she really is; and second, learning how to live that out. It’s the same journey we all take, and I believe that makes her pretty relatable.

You talk about the power of belief in the book. What is the purpose of faith, and what makes faith so powerful in people’s lives?

Belief and faith are everything. We form our own realities. We make judgments based on the past and what we think the future will bring; then we shape our idea of what we are capable of around those beliefs. Imagine if we truly believed we were infinite sons and daughters of the creator. How different would the world look then? When we believe and have faith in who the Father calls us, then the world looks pretty different.

Maybe It's You ~ Review with Author Q and A

Maybe It's You
Crisis Team #3
By Candace Calvert

Nurse Sloane Ferrell thought she'd finally left her past behind just as she'd left her last name Wilder behind when she left San Diego from LA. The only problem with leaving the past behind the memories stay with you - and Sloane has some really bad ones.

Sloane is determined to be a new person - she's avoiding alcohol, after work socializing, and anything to draw attention to herself. But when she sees a young woman in trouble she's determined to help her, bringing her to the attention of LA Hope's assistant director of PR Micah Prescott.

Convinced that Sloane is the possible face of compassion that the hospital needs to portray Micah makes an effort to get to know the private and passionate person who puts patient well-being above everything -- even her own comfort.

But when the past comes knocking Sloane finds herself at a crossroads does she give up all she has gained in LA and run once more or does she stay where she is and fight to keep her new life?  But she carefully concealed secret is about to become known and it could cost her everything - including her chance at real love.

This is the third book in the Crisis Team series, the second in which Sloane is in. The difference in Sloane from Step by Step to Maybe It's You is interesting to observe.  This is a story of second chances and forgiveness. Sloane's crisis brings to light how one's forgiveness is based on one's own prejudices - and true forgiveness can't be enjoyed until we have extended it to another.

This is a series that should be read in order, especially the last two books. The books are each set in a different location but there is a character that carries over from one book to the other and that is Sloane along with her cat Marty in these two books.

And a special added bonus was Gibbs and McGee two adorable doxies - Gotta love the doxies! My 13 agree it was the highlight of the book.

Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary review copy of this book with no expectation of a review positive or otherwise. All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:
ER nurse Sloane Ferrell escaped her risky past—new name, zip code, job, and a fresh start. She’s finally safe, if she avoids a paper trail and doesn’t let people get too close. Like the hospital’s too-smooth marketing man with his relentless campaign to plaster one “lucky” employee’s face on freeway billboards.

Micah Prescott’s goal is to improve the Hope hospital image, but his role as a volunteer crisis responder is closer to his heart. The selfless work helps fill a void in his life left by family tragedy. So does a tentative new relationship with the compassionate, beautiful, and elusive Sloane Ferrell.

Then a string of brutal crimes makes headlines, summons responders . . . and exposes disturbing details of Sloane’s past.

Can hope spring from crisis?

Q and A with Candace Calvert
Candace Calvert is a former ER nurse and author of the Mercy Hospital, Grace Medical, and Crisis Team series. Her medical dramas offer readers a chance to “scrub in” on the exciting world of emergency medicine. Wife, mother, and very proud grandmother, Candace makes her home in northern California. Please visit her website at candacecalvert.com.

1. Maybe It’s You is the third installment in your latest trilogy, the Crisis Team series. What is the background on this series?
The Crisis Team series features the selfless and compassionate work of volunteer community chaplains—true heroes, in my opinion. The stories are set in my native California, this one in the “City of Angels,” Los Angeles.

2. How do you expect this series to resonate with your audience? What are you most excited for your readers to experience through reading these novels?
I love that my readers agree crisis responders are very special heroes. Because these selfless men and women are volunteers, it’s fun to show how their day jobs differ from what they encounter when they pull on those volunteer jackets. The hero of Maybe It’s You is the hospital’s public relations guy: coat, tie, media-speak, very different. As with all of my series, the Crisis Team stories are hospital based. Readers will feel as if they’ve been dropped into the adrenaline-infused action of the ER, experience team camaraderie, taste that day-old coffee—and glimpse the good hearts behind the stethoscopes and badges.

3. Crisis teams are becoming increasingly vital and active in the world today. How would you describe their role, and how can we learn more?
Crisis responders are trained to assist survivors of tragedy, whether it be from a major disaster (weather-related catastrophes, fires, bombings, mass shootings, etc.) or of a more personal nature like the sudden death of a loved one from a heart attack, accident, suicide, homicide, sudden infant death, or other unexpected cause. These volunteers work alongside other community service personnel (fire, police, rescue) offering support, a compassionate ear, and resources to folks trying to cope in the wake of an incident that will forever change their lives. In creating my stories, I’m grateful for the assistance of U.S. Crisis Care.
Here is a link: U.S. Crisis Care

4. As a former ER nurse who has had crisis chaplain training, what has been your most rewarding or memorable experience in the field?
In my role as a CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management) peer counselor, I was part of a team that ministered to fellow medical team members affected by work-related tragedy. We responded to (and conducted debriefings for) hospital staff after situations involving infant and child death, mass casualties, personal assault, and accidental death (or suicide) of fellow team members. One of the more heartbreaking situations I dealt with involved a hospital ER team caring for a critically injured youngster—who was the child of their favorite trauma surgeon.

5. What was your inspiration for Maybe It’s You and the main characters, Sloane and Micah? Interestingly, I never intended to feature Sloane Ferrell as the heroine of Maybe It’s You. In Step by Step, she is the nemesis teammate to the story’s heroine. She’s cynical, troubled, and dare we say unlikable? Probably. And rather mysterious, too—for very good reason. As an author, crawling inside Sloane’s head was a challenge. It raised more questions than answers. I suddenly needed to know why she was the way she was. And what it might take to change that. As this third story opens, Sloane has a new name, new zip code, new job, and a life-and death need to keep a low profile. But the opening scene puts our reluctant heroine in the media spotlight and at serious odds with Micah Prescott, the hospital’s equally determined PR man.

6. What lessons or truths will your readers find in the pages of this novel?
The unifying message in Maybe It’s You is one of forgiveness and healing, brokenness and worth—that no matter our mistakes, we are loved by God. Saved by grace.

7. As an author, what did you particularly enjoy about crafting this story?
I have been known to randomly invite readers into my stories—as characters. It was especially fun, this time, to feature the husband of one of my readers as hospital worker/handyman Jerry Rhodes; from what I’d learned of him on Facebook, he seemed a perfect match. My reader and I had a great time getting the details right, and in the end, I also “borrowed” her adorable doxies, Gibbs and McGee, her dear, elderly mama—and then I invited this generous reader to make a cameo appearance of her own. I think you’ll agree they were a great addition to the story.

8. What are some of the unique challenges of writing contemporary romance in a medical setting?
I think the challenge of the medical aspect is to provide realistic (and accurate) medical detail without talking over the heads of readers, but not talking down to them either. Because of the popularity of medical TV drama and the opportunity for people to google their way into medical jargon, symptomology, and treatment adjuncts, readers are far more savvy these days. I try my best to sort of parachute my readers into the medical scenes, allowing them to feel as if they are part of the team. As far as the romance aspect goes, while it’s true that teammates working in life-and-death situations often develop strong (and sometimes romantic) bonds, I can guarantee there are no TV-type trysts going on in hospital storage rooms!

9. Have you received any feedback from your fans on the Crisis Team series? How are they responding?
The response (I’m grateful) has been very positive; readers love these compassionate crisis responders. And of course, I’m so honored that Booklist chose this series’ first story, By Your Side, as a Top 10 Inspirational Book of 2015.

10. What is the best advice or encouragement you have received either personally or professionally?
I often receive e-mails (and even handwritten letters) from my readers. They are always a blessing. One that particularly stands out was a note from a young woman after her Alabama town was devastated by a tornado. She wrote from a shelter, exhausted, after finally getting her child to sleep. She’d picked up one of my books for a few moments of escape—and found unexpected comfort, hope. Her words, in part: “During this time of chaos and confusion . . . Thank you for providing shelter in my storm.” No better encouragement for any author.

11. What are you most proud of in your writing career?
I feel really good that I’m a trailblazer when it comes to medical romance in Christian fiction—I love being called the author of “medical hope opera.” That my long years as a nurse are now the basis for stories that touch readers’ hearts, offer hope, and perhaps even healing, seems so right, God’s plan, for sure. I’m definitely proud of my publishing team—Tyndale House is beyond awesome.

12. What are some future projects you’re working on?
After completing these three books (and now three medical fiction series), I’m currently enjoying some R and R: gardening, traveling with my husband, and volunteering in our granddaughters’ classrooms. I’m a “Sight Word Buster,” a program that boosts reading skills. An author shaping new readers—how cool is that?

Can I Really Know Jesus? ~ Review

Can I Really Know Jesus?
101 Questions and Answers about Jesus, Salvation,
        and Prayer
by Carolyn Larsen

Have you ever wondered if you can truly know Jesus? If you are like most people you have asked yourself this question from time to time. Faith is belief without view-able evidence and it is normal to have doubts creep in and attempt to attack your faith. Asking questions is a chance to learn and grow in one's understanding of Jesus, His gift of salvation, and in how to talk with Him through prayer.

Events from the life of Jesus are explained in simple terms so that one who has not grown up in this type of environment can understand what is being said.  Some of the questions in the first part cover the date of Jesus' birth, why Mary was chosen to be His mother, and whether there is proof of Jesus' resurrection. The second part covers salvation and what that means on a personal level in one's day-to-day life. The third part covers prayer - what is prayer exactly and how one should and can approach this opportunity to speak to God.

This book is hard-covered and has soft colored pages (yellows, peaches, blues, greens) with a few illustrations (at the top of the page by the question number and at the separation between the parts). Each question/answer is followed by a supporting Bible verse.

This book would make a lovely gift. It would also be a good book to have as part of your family devotional time.

I was provided a free copy of this book by Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
Knowing Jesus is like no other relationship you’ve ever experienced.

Cheerful artwork with a modern whimsical style wraps around honest, easy-to-understand answers to your toughest questions about the Savior, his invitation to salvation, and the assurance that God really does hear our prayers. Can I Really Know Jesus? will inspire and offer comfort as you grow closer to God and gain a better understanding of why he sent his Son to earth, what it means to have salvation, and how prayer can deeply impact your life. Also serves as a heartfelt gift of love and promise to those who are considering faith or are new believers.

Deadly Encounter ~ Review

Deadly Encounter
FBI Task Force 1
By DiAnn Mills

It was a normal Saturday morning when Stacy Broussard came across a murder scene. A scene which demands the attention of the FBI.  Unfortunately for Stacy the lead agent is Alex LeBlanc, a somewhat brusque and suspicious person, who immediately annoys her with his line of questioning.

Alex has reasons for his approach and he isn't about to repeat the mistakes of the past. But the facts in this case just don't seem to be adding up to what evidence they have. Is this a case of domestic terrorism interrupted or some thing far more sinister?

The clock is ticking in more ways than one and time is of the essence if they hope to stop what is coming.  Trust is a premium that they can't afford to misplace as they work their way through the various and intertwining layers that have them looking at everyone twice.

The basic overall story is excellent.  At times the lead characters Stacy and Alex can feel flat in their talking, but I'm assuming they are meant to come across this way as they both are weighing everything they say and do.  Whitt adds an additional dimension as he struggles to deal with his ever absent parents and accept the love and comfort Stacy offers him.  He is truly a person caught in the middle.  And his care of Xena, an injured dog from the crime scene, is touching.

Fans of Dee Henderson's newest books, who have never read DiAnn Mills previously, would likely enjoy this book. This is a story of broken people seeking healing, who have to face what has been broken and find hope in the tomorrow that is coming. And something about Stacy reminds me of Ann.

I was provided a copy of this book by Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
Airport Ranger volunteer Stacy Broussard expected a peaceful Saturday morning ride around the perimeter of Houston’s airport. What she encounters instead is a brutal homicide and a baffling mystery. Next to the body is an injured dog, the dead man’s motorcycle, and a drone armed with a laser capable of taking down a 747.

Though FBI Special Agent Alex LeBlanc sees a clear-cut case of terrorism, his past has taught him to be suspicious of everyone, even witnesses. Even bleeding-heart veterinarians like Stacy. But when her gruesome discovery is only the first in a string of incidences that throw her life into a tailspin, Alex begins to wonder if Stacy was targeted. As a health emergency endangers Stacy’s community, and the task force pulls in leads from all directions, Alex and Stacy must work together to prevent another deadly encounter.
