Fawkes ~ Review

Fawkes
By Nadine Brandes

Thomas Fawkes has only ever wanted his father's attention, approval, and love but when he contracts the plague his hopes seem to be at an end. For a year his father has been silent but with his Color Test upon him, he knows his father will present him with his mask and he will bond with a color. But disappointment seems to be his lot as his father the famed Guy Fawkes again lets him down refusing to present him with his mask or his presence.

Maskless, Thomas has no place in school or society - his father has ruined him. Determined to track down his father Thomas makes his way to London. But London is a dangerous place to be when you are maskless and plagued. Those who are masked are either Keepers or Igniters and they are at war. Both sides blame the other for the plague that is making its way across England a plague that is turning the infected into stone.

But finding his father only brings new complications as he is involved in a plot to bring down King James on the belief that the plague will be defeated with a Keeper on the throne rather than a king who has Igniter sympathies. Determined to prove himself to father, gain his mask, and rid himself of the plague Thomas agrees to take part in the plot against the king.

But when Thomas comes across Emma Areben in London he is confronted with something he never expected - acceptance and a viewpoint on White Light that he never expected. But she is the enemy or is she? Thomas is on a journey to discover the truth for himself if he can discover it.

Fawkes is a delightful blend of history and fantasy that will leave the reader enchanted and perhaps on their own quest for the truth about England, the Gunpowder Plot, and Plague that was so feared. Thomas Fawkes is a young man who is on the cusp of manhood when his very identity is denied him. With his future in doubt, he has no choice but to go after it for himself. Emma Areben is the ward of a peer of English society but she has a secret, one that most know nothing of, one that could ruin her in polite society. And the White Light the most powerful of the colors is also the one most fought over - should it be suppressed or should it be wielded. For what it is the White Light is a pivotal force within this story - one that the careful reader will decern as being greater than just a color power to be used at will.

This book is as equally well-written as Nadine Brandes previous work the Out of Time series but completely different as this is a historical fantasy fiction instead of a dystopian work.  I enjoyed the historical elements that brought this story to life while the fantasy elements added an exciting and unexpected twist. The mistrust of both sides against the other just fans the flames of hate and fear as neither is willing to see beyond what they wish to see - which sadly has been a reoccurring theme throughout history. I highly recommend this book perfect for any time reading or a book club setting.

About the Book:
Thomas Fawkes is turning to stone,
and the only cure to the Stone Plague
is to join his father’s plot to
assassinate the king of England.

Silent wars leave the most carnage. The wars that are never declared, but are carried out in dark alleys with masks and hidden knives. Wars where color power alters the natural rhythm of 17th century London. And when the king calls for peace, no one listens until he finally calls for death. But what if death finds him first?

Keepers think the Igniters caused the plague. Igniters think the Keepers did it. But all Thomas knows is that the Stone Plague infecting his eye is spreading. And if he doesn’t do something soon, he’ll be a lifeless statue. So when his Keeper father, Guy Fawkes, invites him to join the Gunpowder Plot—claiming it will put an end to the plague—Thomas is in.

The plan is to use 36 barrels of gunpowder to blow up the Igniter King. Unfortunately, doing so will destroy the family of the girl Thomas loves. But backing out of the plot will send his father and the other plotters to the gallows. To save one, Thomas will lose the other.

No matter Thomas’s choice, one thing is clear: once the decision is made and the color masks have been put on, there’s no turning back.

The Windfall App ~ Review with Giveaway

The Windfall App
By Teresa Richards

Marina Berghman is about to get the opportunity of a lifetime. Having celebrated her 18th birthday with the purchase of a lottery ticket (which would total upset her father if he found out, btw) Marina and her best friend Darya Cruz are eagerly awaiting the drawing not focusing on the silent auction school fundraiser going on around them. But when Marina 's ticket wins they are beside themselves even though they have no idea what she has won.

But having the winning ticket isn't everything she thought it would be. First, her father is dead set against her claiming the prize - worse he's forbidden it. Well, Marina knows the money is needed for college and her father's business so her only choice is to go against her parents. After all, it's just money and she is totally convinced that her father is way overreacting.  Okay, maybe some of his reasons are good but it's not like she is a gambler and this is going to set her on the path of ruin. It was just one lottery ticket.

But when her father lays down the law Marina is so out of there - just one little problem she has no place to stay until her winnings are released. And that is just the start of her problems - with no one to turn to for advice she is basically on her own - and with a very small bank account and domestic skills not quite there she looking at some slim days for the next week plus. And all this while trying to juggle school and find a lawyer to help her understand all the legalese she has to sign. And she has friends galore crawling out the woodworks, bus seats, cafeteria tables - 99% of whom she's never even met before. What's a girl to do!!

But one bright spot in this whole mess is Sean the really (I mean, really) nice guy she meets on the trolley. He seems to totally get her and she's more than happy to have another person at her side who doesn't seem interested in what her new-found fortune can do for them.

But when things start to go really bad Marina isn't sure whom she can trust - and lives are at stake. Can she save the lives of those she cares about or will she totally blow it?

This is a fun read that teens will love. Marina is given the chance to get out from under the pressures and expectations of her parents. But sometimes growing up and having to make the big decisions is a whole lot harder than it looks especially without any advice from the people who loved and shaped the first eighteen years.  There is a touch of romance and a definite dose of mystery in this one. This also a journey of self-discovery and learning just what has value in one's life. News Flash sometimes the things your parents warn you against doing truly are with your best interests at heart but sometimes we need to go out and make the big mistake to realize that.

I was provided a complimentary review copy of this book with no expectation but my honest review - all opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Marina Berghman is a classical piano prodigy with parents who’ve had her life mapped out since she was in diapers. But their plan leaves no room for her secret love of alternative rock, or Sean, the edgy guitarist who recently moved to town.

When Marina buys a lottery ticket on her eighteenth birthday via the new Windfall app, she expects it to be nothing more than a rite of passage. But she wins—the grand prize of five thousand dollars a day, for life. Suddenly given the means to break free from a life she never felt in control of, she’s quick to cut her family ties and turn her back on everything she knows.

But her lottery win was no lucky break. Her prize comes with strings attached, and Marina soon finds herself at the center of someone else’s life or death game. When she discovers evidence linking her dad to the intrigue, she turns to Sean for help. But he’s harboring secrets of his own.

Now Marina must sort out who to trust and who’s pulling the strings before her prize turns into a noose.

Dagger's Sleep ~ Review and Giveaway

Dagger's Sleep
Beyond the Tales #1
By Tricia Mingerink

For almost one hundred years the Seven Kingdoms of Tallahatchia have been divided as High Prince Alexander of the kingdoms sleeps a cursed sleep within the walls of Castle Eyota. But the way to the seventh kingdom Kanawhee is not easily traveled as the kingdoms of Tuckawassee and Pohatomie war against any who seek this path. Legends surround the prince - promising a princess who will with love's true kiss break the curse and awaken the prince. But one hundred years will soon be upon them and the curse has yet to broken. Any thought to be the promised cursebreaker are all too soon targeted by those who want the sleep to be endless and unto death.

Princess Roseanna has always enjoyed hearing the tales told of the High King and the High Prince. The tales of old have filled her dreams with sights she's never beheld. With the current state of warring among the kingdoms she knows she'll never see these distant lands. But when a raiding party is found within the Kingdom of Neskahana she is set on a path she never sought or expected. Daemyn Rand has been pursued by Tuckawassee raiders deep into Neskahana because he has news he needs to share with those within Castle Deeling. And he has even more important news for Princess Roseanna ~ she is the promised cursebreaker and he is bound to bring her to Castle Eyota and High Prince Alexander.

But who is this prince that she is to awaken?

High Prince Alexander has been blessed with superior intelligence and in true princely fashion, he is amazed at his own superior abilities. But Alexander is living under a curse ~ on his 21st birthday he will be pricked by his own dagger and fall into a sleep from which he will never wake. Determined to prevent this curse from being fulfilled the prince sets out on a mission with his manservant Jadon Rand. Alexander is on a mission to seeking out a Loyal Fae whom he hopes to convince to lift his curse. But Alex's mission doesn't go quite how he planned it. In fact, traveling his kingdom in disguise opens his eyes to the true state of Tallahatchia.

Dagger's Sleep seems at first glance of the story summary to be a retelling of Sleeping Beauty but this is so much more than that. There is a spiritual element that runs throughout that adds an extra depth to this story. And then there is Daemyn Rand who seems to know more than he is willing to share and yet seems resigned to what he must do. There is a thread of mystery that runs through the story that one gets little glimpses of. This was a delightful read that one just doesn't want to put down. The story is told from both Rosanna and Alexander's perspectives as it unfolds before the reader. The story comes to a satisfying ending and can be considered complete so I'm interested to read what comes next in book 2 of the Beyond the Tales series. This is one book you don't want to miss out on. Fans of both Fairy Tale retellings and Speculative Fiction will love this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good book.

I was provided a digital ARC copy of this book by the author with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions expected are my own.

About the Book:
A prince cursed to sleep.

A princess destined to wake him.

A kingdom determined to stop them.

High Prince Alexander has been cursed to a sleep-like unto death, a curse that will end the line of the high kings and send the Seven Kingdoms of Tallahatchia into chaos. With his manservant to carry his luggage and his own superior intelligence to aid him, Alex sets off to find one of the Fae and end his curse one way or another.

A hundred years later, Princess Rosanna learns she is the princess destined by the Highest King to wake the legendary sleeping prince. With the help of the mysterious Daemyn Rand, can she find the courage to finish the quest as Tallahatchia wavers on the edge of war?

One curse connects them. A hundred years separate them. From the rushing rivers of Tallahatchia’s mountains to the hall of the Highest King himself, their quests will demand sacrifices neither of them could imagine.

Clod Makes a Friend ~ Review with Giveaway

Clod Makes a Friend
By David J. Pedersen

Clod Makes a Friend is a story that shows the importance of having a friend and the crushing power of the word of a bully. Clod is a somewhat clumsy large young boy who takes after his father. While those around him exhibit magic skills Clod seems to be lacking in both magic and intellect and his teacher lets him know just how worthless and unskilled he is. But even worse Clod has no friends and the other children make fun of him and let him know that they consider him the ugliest thing they've ever seen.

But Clod has a skill that has not been encouraged by his teacher - a skill that allows him to bring to life a friend. But Ada, who is made from clay, can only exist for a short time. But the brief periods of time are enough for Clod to finally have a friend. As the years go by Clod continues to carve Ada and awaken her for slowly extended periods of time.

Clod's skill as a carver is unique and declared evil with possible ties to dark magic. But when Clod's skills are needed in the war that has drawn ever closer to his town others begin to realize that he isn't as worthless as his teacher believed. Some still fear Clod but he has his small circle of friends and Ada.

This is a delightful story that will enchant readers and there is a most unexpected twist at the end that one will not see coming. At just under 170 pages this book is a good length for middle-grade readers. Friendship, bullying, and self-worth are at the heart of this story that has a glimmer of fairytale within its woven spell. Highly recommended reading that offers some important truths.

I was provided a review copy of this book by the author through iRead Book Tours with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Best Friend Ever?

Bullies love to hate Clod. Not just because he’s bigger, clumsier, and uglier than his classmates - he’s also the only student in his school without magic. In a world where all magic is possible and everyone else is born with great gifts to do amazing things, Clod is alone.

Living with his mum in a broken-down cottage on barely enough, the only thing Clod has to play with is the clay she occasionally brings him. Bleak is an understatement. More than anything, Clod wants a friend. The only way that’s going to happen, is to make one himself.

After an angry visit from the worst of the bullies, his teacher Learned Yugen, Clod’s clay sculpture of a little girl comes to life and introduces herself as Ada. For a clay girl barely the size of his hand, she has more confidence and courage than he knows what to do with. Every adventure she leads him on gets Clod into trouble. She may be the friend he wants, but is she the friend he needs?

After many years, and too many pranks, Yugen becomes convinced that Clod is tainted by the evil slowly infiltrating the Kingdom of Pag. Especially when Ada isn’t the only one Clod can bring to life.

Clod Makes A Friend is a bittersweet fairy tale for all ages from David J. Pedersen, author of the Angst series of fantasy novels.

Imagine...The Ten Plagues

Imagine...
     The Ten Plagues
By Matt Koceich

Kai Wells is in trouble. Vivian Gold has decided that Kai is going to pay for her interference. When a sudden punch connects to her face Kai finds herself no longer in Florida.

Coming to Kai finds herself in a strange place but the truth is even more unbelievable. She is in Egypt at the time of Ramses and Moses! And she has come to the attention of a high-ranking Egyptian official which is not good for Kai or those who have befriended her.

Observing the ten plagues makes it so much more than just words on a page or a story told in Sunday School. As she experiences the plagues and sees how it affects the land and the Egyptians Kai fears she may never return to her home.

Imagine...The Ten Plagues is the second book in the Imagine series. At the end, there is an interesting twist that will be interesting to see where the series will go with this.

This book is 111 pages so a good length for middle-grade readers who aren't yet into longer books. Kids who enjoy adventure will enjoy this book. The common factor in this series is the unexpected trip back in time to a momentous event and this time it is the 10 plagues of Egypt.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:

A Loyal Heart ~ Review

A Loyal Heart
An Uncertain Heart #4
By Jody Hedlund

Sir Aldric has determined to right the wrongs he has committed and has been working for Lord Pitt to pay off the debt he owes him. His latest mission for Lord Pitt is to lay siege to Castle Ludlow and capture the daughters of the Earl of Ulster. But capturing Lady Olivia is a challenge - especially keeping her prisoner until he can present them to Lord Pitt.

Olivia is not some docile maiden given to bouts of swooning when danger comes and she is determined to defend her home and thwart the schemes Lord Pitt seems determined to carry out against her father all in the name of the king. But Sir Aldric is a determined knight and she is willing to use his gallantry against him if it will aid her in escape and fulfilling her father's quest for a relic.

But when Olivia is caught up in her own blind loyalty she must determine what her future holds and where her loyalty truly lies ~ is it duty to her father or to her heart?  Will her answer be the continuation of what she knows or will she embark on a new path? And can she trust Sir Aldric though he is but a lowly soldier in service to the whims of a lord?

Sir Aldric is determined to not repeat the mistakes of the past. With the painful loss of his first wife, he has determined never marry again. But Lady Olivia's feisty personality and beauty have a way of getting to him. And when the only chance of saving her from herself is a betrothal Aldric has to set aside his own fears. But can he truly set aside his fears of the past?

Those who have read the previous books in the An Uncertain Heart series will enjoy this story that follows the story of Sir Bennett's less than happy brother from For Love and Honor. Though intended for a YA audience looking for clean fiction any fan of historical romance fiction will enjoy this clean and entertaining story. This is a story of second chances and redemption.  And if you enjoy a battle scene with some expert sword skills all the better as this has both.

As a note of recommendation, I have purchased a copy of this book for my own use though I was provided a pre-release digital copy from which this review was based.

I was provided with a digital review of this book with no expectation of a positive review - all opinions expressed are my own.

She’ll save her sister at any cost and do whatever her father asks—even if that means obeying his order to steal a sacred relic from her captor.

As Lord Pitt’s commander, Sir Aldric is in charge of the beautiful but feisty new prisoner. He has his hands full attempting to keep Lady Olivia out of trouble. When Lord Pitt throws her in the dungeon and threatens to hang her for stealing, Aldric conceives a plot to save Olivia’s life—betrothal to him.

Can Olivia give up the prestigious match her father has arranged with a wealthy marquess in order to marry a lowly knight like Aldric? And can Aldric move beyond his past mistakes to embrace love again? When loyalties are tested, they’re thrust into danger that could cost them their love and their lives.

Reclaiming Shilo Snow ~ Scavenger Hunt with Review and Giveaway

Welcome to the Scavenger Hunt Tour for
Reclaiming Shilo Snow by Mary Weber
in collaboration with Thomas Nelson and Zondervan Fiction

Reclaiming Shilo Snow
Evaporation of Sofi Snow #2
By Mary Weber

The memories of that day came back - the day her world changed. The day her father died. The day her mother didn't come for them. The day they took them to the planet of Delon.

Returning to Delon in search of her brother Shilo has reawakened the memories that threaten to undo Sofi. But with the unexpected help of Ambassador Miguel, she has made it this far. And if she can use her skills to access the Delonese system she just may make it out alive. There's just one problem she has to stay ahead of the Delonese long enough to find the brother they have stolen from her.

But returning to Earth could be a death sentence as Sofi has been labeled a terrorist by the very people who staged the attack that allowed Shilo to be taken. But Earth might be the only place that Sofi and Miguel can hope to stop the Delonese and their secret designs on Earth.

So begins a game that will test Sofi on every level as she battles against her awakening memories, the Delonese, and the code. As the lines between reality and virtuality begin to merge Sofi will have to depend upon the skills that advanced her through the levels of the FanFights.

Meanwhile on Earth Inola Snow is in a fight of her own - with her children gone and on the Delon planet she is determined to get them back. But her secret dealings with Delone could be a potential liability, destroying all she's worked for. And it could make her a potential target to those who view Delon and her inhabitants as a threat to both humanity and Earth.
War could soon be upon their doorstep and the clock is Tick tick tick ticking down. Are the Delonese their salvation or their destruction? The answer lies within Sofi if she can only find it intime.

If you have not read the first book The Evaporation of Sofi Snow don't pick up this book until you do. The vast majority of both books takes place over a couple of days - so reading this book first will totally confuse you - it would be equivalent to picking up a book and starting in the middle. This two books together are the complete and total story. And what a story it is! Betrayal, devotion, the bond of family, a world in peril - fans of fantasy and sci-fi will love this series that is for the YA teen and up reader.

I was provided an Advanced Reader's Copy (uncorrected proof) of this book by the publisher through JustRead Publicity Tours with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
