Author Interview:
Do you have a day job?
I do not have a day job anymore, I gave that up when I started writing, but I do have 4 kids. That alone could almost be considered a full time job I would think. I also have all the normal daily things that most of us have to cope with such as cooking and cleaning, etc.

How do you find time to write?
I have times where I write and then times where I do not write for a bit. It is the promotion of the book that takes up a lot of time.
I have Facebook, my own website www.pjmouse.com, Etsy, Amazon, Instagram and have to keep all these updated. I also have to keep in touch with stores to see if they need more stock.
Not only have I written the books, but I have also had PJ Mouse toy created along with his passport and stickers. I recently started having PJ's pajamas made. It took a while to create all these things. The idea: to make it appealing for kids to want to curl up with a book and read.
So I go in cycles, doing what is necessary at the time. Sometimes it is the writing and then, once a book has just come out, it is the promotion.

What is your favorite thing about the writing process?
I think I like creating the characters. I like PJ, he is so adorable. I also like the slight friendly rivalry between PJ and Star Bear. I also like trying to make things funny and entertaining for kids. I want kids to learn from the books but to have a good time as they do.

What is your next project?
My next book is on England 'The Travel Adventures of PJ Mouse - In a Small Corner of England'. It will be available in November. The next one is on New Zealand. The first draft of the manuscript is complete but Megan has not yet started the artwork for the book. I expect it will be published some time in the middle of 2016. The 5th book in the series will most likely be on Italy. I have just started writing the manuscript.

The Midnight Visitors ~ Review

The Midnight Visitors
By Juliet David
Illustrated by Jo Parry

It was a ordinary night, cold and dark and quiet...

At least it was quiet until visitors started arriving in Miriam's cowshed.  First a family of rabbits arrived seeking the warmth of the hay and the shed.  They were soon joined by a fox and an owl.

Then a couple of people with a donkey arrived - seeking shelter with the menagerie already within. But these people were weary with travel.  And the woman was expecting a child - and soon from the look of her.

Before too long the family of travelers had a baby and visitors of their own!  Shepherds had heard of this little baby's birth and had to come see him.

What had started out as ordinary, cold night soon became one never to be forgotten by those who visited it that night.  The Midnight Visitors is a sweet story and a delightful recounting of the Nativity for young children.  This is in no way an in-depth story, but rather one that can lead into the full Biblical account.  After reading the story parents could ask young listeners if they know who the strangers who came into the barn were.  Who the baby was?  What was the distant singing that Miriam heard?

The illustrations are delightful - I have a particular fondness for Freddy Fox as he reminds me of one of my doxies.  In fact Freddy's picture on the cover is what made me really want to review this book when Kregel offered me the opportunity.

I was provided a copy of this book through Kregel's blogger program in exchange for my honest review and tour participation.

99 Prayers for Children ~ Review

99 Prayers for Children
Complied by Juliet David
Illustrated by Elina Ellis

Prayers for every day,
Prayers for special days,
Graces, blessings, praises:
A classic treasury for children.

Learning to pray is sometimes one of the hardest concepts for one to grasp.  How does one pray to God.  God, we are told, is always with us yet we can't see Him. How can we talk to someone we can't see with our eyes or hear with our ears?  What are we suppose to say to God?

This book will help your child (and perhaps you) learn how to pray.  With prayers that are from Bible verses, poetry, saints of old, and even original to this book one will get an idea of how to pray from an early age.  All too often the prayers one learns during childhood are a rushed through ditty that doesn't really mean anything.

This book is one that will be a perfect addition to your family devotion time.  With the holidays approaching this would be lovely gift for that special young person in your life.

I was provided a copy of this book by Kregel in exchange for my honest review.

About the book:

A companion prayer book to 99 Stories from the Bible with delightful illustrations in a strong vibrant style and prayers for all occasions. The prayers are a combination of traditional and modern and provide an introduction to family prayer time with young children, bringing talking to God to life in the heart of every child.

Book Excerpt:

Hi Kids,

My name is Sandy and I’m a yellow Labrador retriever. Most of the time, I’m a happy-go-lucky pup, but once in awhile, I feel lonely or grumpy, too. Just like you, I experience lots of different emotions (that’s a BIG word for feelings).

When I’m happy, I wag my tail and let out a soft ruff-ruff-ruff as if to say Let’s play!  When I’m annoyed or frightened, I may grumble and growl, meaning Back off, buddy! Stay away!

My feline friend, Willow, likes to remind me that I’m not perfect, but I love her anyhow.  And that’s why I’ve asked her to help me introduce you to my very favorite feeling words. I hope you’ll share them with your human family and, of course, your furry and feathered friends!

Love,
Sandy

The Prince Who Was Just Himself ~ Review

The Prince Who Was Just Himself
By Silke Schnee
Illustrations by Heike Sistig

The third prince was a little different than his two older brothers.  He wasn't as quick as they were and he seldom spoke.  But he had a caring and loving heart.  This caring would one day save the kingdom he called home.  Because of his caring he was able to touch the heart of the kingdom's greatest threat - Scarface.

A simple act of compassion can touch even the hardest heart.  And sometimes the least likely person becomes a hero because he fights with his heart rather than a weapon.

The Prince Who Was Just Himself is a story that was inspired by the author's own son Noah, who, like Prince Noah, was born with Down syndrome.  The greatest lesson to take away from this story is that by being one's self - one person can change the world around them without making an effort to be someone they aren't.

There is also information about Down syndrome found at the back of the book that a parent or teacher can use to answer any questions that might arise after reading this story.

I was provided a copy of this book by Handlebar in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book

The royal couple is looking forward to their third child. "He looks a little different," muses the king at Prince Noah's arrival. "He is not like the others," agrees the queen. Soon they notice what a very special person he is, even though he can't do everything his brothers can.

When the youngest prince disarms the cruel knight Scarface, the nation's most dreaded enemy, with an act of compassion, everyone finally realizes how good it is that each person is unique.

This delightfully illustrated fairy tale for children three years and older instills appreciation for children with Down syndrome and other developmental challenges, making it a valuable aid for teaching tolerance in the home or classroom.

The author is Silke Schnee, who is a journalist and the mother of a child with Down syndrome. This book has wonderful insights into the joy children with disabilities can bring those around them.

What Others Are Saying

"A gentle fairy tale about a young prince with Down syndrome who saves his kingdom from a menacing knight.... [It] offers a special needs child in a positive, starring role and can be read simply as a satisfying fairy tale....The author, herself the mother of a child with Down syndrome, and the illustrator ably introduce a difficult subject in a fictional context with a light, sure touch." --Kirkus Reviews

Noah - A Wordless Picture Book ~ Review

Noah
A Wordless Picture Book
By Mark Ludy

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well Noah is a book filled with pictures and no words.  The pictures tell the story of Noah and the message he received from God directing him to build a large ship.

The pictures will capture the attention of the youngest "reader" from the opening page.  This is the perfect book to accompany a reading of Noah from the Bible.

Journey with Noah as he follows God's direction building the ark, bringing the animals aboard, and living aboard the ship as the world he knew was remade.

Share Noah with the little ones in your life.  This would be a lovely gift for a new baby, a baptism/dedication, birthday or Christmas.

I was provided a copy of this book through Handlebar in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

A hundred years before the Great Flood, a man named Noah came home talking crazy. God wanted him to build the biggest ship the world had ever seen. The future of humanity depended on it. How would his wife respond? What would the neighbors think? Was it even feasible?

This lavish re-imagining of one of the greatest stories of all time will fascinate children and adults alike. Nuanced and playful, yet meticulous in following the biblical narrative, Mark Ludy's world-class art digs deeper than the Sunday-school tale of cuddly animals, exploring Noah's relationship with his family, the natural world, God--and a formidable engineering challenge. Immerse yourself in this stunning wordless epic.

Whatever your age, you'll never read this story in the same way again.
