Goodbye Christopher Robin ~ Movie Review with Trailer

Goodbye Christopher Robin

I was given the opportunity to preview Goodbye Christopher Robin and I naturally agreed. After all who hasn't heard about Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and the Hundred Acre Wood. This is the story behind this beloved story.

A.A. Milne has lost his focus, his life is caught between his desire to write something that will change the world and having to live with the after-effects of living through the Great War, the war that was to end all wars. It is in this climate that the Milne's have a son whom they name Christopher Robin but call Billy. When Billy is left to his father's care for a short period of time what follows is an almost magical period of bonding between father and son. And the Hundred Acre Wood comes to life and the residents come to life and soon begin to grace pages that become a world that brings healing and happiness to a world that had lost so much to war.

But what was Billy's soon becomes Christopher Robin's and the magical bond that father and son had found was lost amongst the clamor for Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, and more.

This is a story that is heart-warming and yet has a thread of heartbreak that runs through it as it explores and examines the bond between Alan Milne and Billy "Christopher Robin" Milne. Those who have seen and enjoyed Finding Neverland will find Goodbye Christopher Robin has a similar feel to it. The scenery and the soundtrack are beautiful and bring an added depth to the movie. This is a movie that can be enjoyed with your children. There are scenes of war and a few instances of bullying so young children may wish to avoid this but most children over 8 should be fine with this movie.

~ A Wrinkle In Time ~

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle is one of my all time favorite books. I was delighted when I picked up my sister's copy and delved into this new world. A world of It Who Which and What. A world without individuality and uniqueness and world threatened by darkness. And now that world of words is about to come to life in a new way.

Synopsis:

A Wrinkle In Time opens in US theatres March 9, 2018.

The film, which is an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and ultimately, the triumph of love.

Directed by Ava DuVernay from a screenplay by Jennifer Lee based upon the beloved novel by Madeleine L’Engle, “A Wrinkle in Time” is produced by Jim Whitaker and Catherine Hand with Doug Merrifield serving as executive producer. The film stars: Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peňa, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, André Holland, Rowan Blanchard with Zach Galifianakis and Chris Pine and introduces Storm Reid.

Watch the teaser trailer for Disney's A Wrinkle In Time.

Madeleine L’Engle (1918-2007)

Madeleine was born on November 29, 1918, and spent her formative years in New York City. She found her gift for writing at an early age developing stories, poems and journals and later went on to study English at Smith College. She married her husband Hugh Franklin and together they had three children and relocated to Connecticut. While her children were young L’Engle taught Sunday school for her church. Once her children were older she worked as a librarian at Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City where she held the position for nearly thirty years.

In 1962 she wrote A Wrinkle In Time and won a Newbury Award in 1963. The book has sold more than 15 million copies since its publication. She followed the successful debut with: A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, and An Acceptable Time.

She also wrote a devotional titled: Glimpses of Grace: Daily Thoughts and Reflections.

L’Engle passed away at the age of 88 on September 6, 2007.

Race to Win ~ Review with DVD giveaway

Race to Win
Starring Danielle Campbell, Luke Perry,
Aiden Flowers, Candice Michele Barley,
Amy Brassette, Thomas Francis Murphy,
and Lance E. Nichols

Awarded the Dove® Foundation Seal of Approval and approved for all ages.

Race to Win is a film that is about family and pulling together in the face of tragedy. The sudden and unexpected death of Gentry Rhodes has left his family in turmoil as they struggle to not only come to terms with his loss from their lives but also the unexpected debt they now find themselves facing.

His daughter Hannah feels that she is the one who must hold the family together and come up with a plan to earn the money they need to save their home and her father's dream. But as is often the case the man holding the debt over them is not willing to give them time to come up with the money (he'd probably make an unreformed Ebeneezer Scrooge proud).

Though dad, played by Luke Perry, dies early on in the movie he makes "visits" to his family offering them encouragement and even sharing a secret with one family member that will keep the viewer wondering what he revealed.

This movie is appropriate for all ages to view without parents cringing at unexpected scenes that their children might see. There are a couple scenes that take place in a bar / pool room. Those who know horses might roll their eyes at a few scenes but if you only have a passing familiarity with them you won't notice.  Overall it is a good film and one you'll be able to enjoy with your children.

I was provided a review copy of this movie by Grace Hill Media with no expectations of a positive review ~ all expressed opinions are my own.

The Spirit of Christmas ~ Thoughts and Giveaway

The Spirit of Christmas

Over the years Christmas has changed as evidenced by the songs
that we sing and have sung through the years. Is Christmas still the
happiest time of the year? Do strangers go out of their way to smile
at the passerby?

Christmas has been caught up in the rush to get through our to do lists,
our to buy lists, and our end of the year lists. But Christmas doesn't have
to be a struggle and a stress. When we look to what we consider the first
Christmas we see it was a simple stable with animals and bedding. There
were no grand gifts or grand visitors. The only ones to celebrate the night
of Christ's birth were simple shepherds who left their fields in the clothes
that they were wearing, they didn't stop to get the most fashionable look of
the day. They celebrated a special event in the quiet of the night, surrounded
by the sounds and smells of animals.

The simplicity of the season is what I love.  A lighted candle, the beauty of song
and the remembrance that a child's birth was about to change the world forever.
But the manger, most likely crafted from roughened wood, was but the first step to
the cross, which was also crafted from roughened wood.

Faith is what makes the season come alive.
It isn't about getting.
It is about receiving
the greatest gift
of  all.
Life
with
God.

QUEEN OF KATWE and Unlikely Champions ~ Thoughts and Movie featurette

How often do we have people around us that find themselves in a seemingly impossible situation and yet they manage not only to survive these obstacles but to overcome them. There are unlikely champions all around us, many of whom never seek the spotlight and just live their lives quietly from day-to-day. You have to look carefully to see them but they are there.

I know of such an unlikely champion - B lived her life fighting to ensure those in the same situation as her would have a better life. The world she has lived in is one with many needs and lacks. But B has worked hard to get an education that many around her don't strive for. Her own health concerns have made her want to help prevent this from being the accepted norm of where she lives to becoming an exception. B is hoping to bring what she has learned home so that those she has grown up with will have the hope of a better tomorrow, one where medical help is just a few feet away rather than hundreds of miles.

People like B are unlikely champions who never win a medal, but they help make their small corner of the world better just through their efforts and their caring. These people are champions of the heart, whose greatest victories are those we never see. These  champions overcome the loss of family, health, and poverty through their perseverance and their drive to help others who may be in a similar situation.

Disney’s QUEEN OF KATWE is based on the inspiring true story of Robert Katende and Phiona Mutesi.  Phiona was a young girl living in the slums of Katwe, Uganda.  One day she stumbles upon Katende and a group of children playing chess in a makeshift church.  Through the guidance of Katende and the game of chess, Phiona is encouraged to believe in herself.  Eventually, she finds herself not only competing in local chess matches, but winning in international competitions.  Robert and Phiona’s story celebrates the notion that champions can come from the most unlikely places.

QUEEN OF KATWE releases in theaters nationwide on Friday, September 30

The heartwarming featurette below features  Academy-Award winner Lupita Nyong'o and Academy Nominee David Oyelowo.

GREATER star Chris Severio shares character building tips & Giveaway

Sports, and especially football, is a favorite pastime for so many, either in watching or in participating.  With determination Brandon Burlsworth overcame obstacles through dedication and hard work to achieve his dream of playing for the Arkansas Razerbacks.  Take a moment to examine and even share the lessons that Chris Severio took away from his role as Brandon Burlsworth.

GREATER Offers Great Life Lessons
By Chris Severio

Actors wait their entire lives to play a role as meaty and meaningful as Brandon Burlsworth. I was blessed to get that opportunity in my first movie, bringing Brandon to the big screen in GREATER, in theaters everywhere Aug. 26.

Brandon was a true champion and role model for so many, and I hope this movie entertains and inspires you and your family. For all the young athletes, new athletes, struggling athletes and dreamers out there (and their parents), these three lessons from Brandon’s life hold the key to building character and finding your destiny.

•         Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t:
Brandon was not the most physically gifted athlete. He struggled with being overweight, wasn’t naturally graceful, was a pretty unlikely candidate to be a college football All-American and then drafted into the NFL. He was able to do it all because he refused to listen to those who doubted him or his abilities. He always believed in himself, knew that through hard work and dedication,
he could be anything he wanted to be. The only thing standing between you and your dreams is how passionately you’re willing to produce them.

•         Dedicate yourself to something greater:
It’s no coincidence the film of Brandon’s life is called GREATER. As a Christian, he believed he was called to be a man of integrity and honor off the field as well as on – he dedicated himself, first and foremost, to God. Your faith can strengthen you, and like Brandon you can choose to be a role
model on and off the field.

•         Help others:
Brandon Burlsworth was a giver. He didn’t just play football, or live his life, focused exclusively on his wants. He made others’ needs a top priority – family, teammates, friends and fans. As he dug in deep to reach his potential as an athlete and a man, he encouraged and supported those who were taking that same journey alongside him. Brandon didn’t just make himself better; he made others better, too, because he was intentional about finding ways to help them.

Below, I’m privileged to share a clip from the movie that shows how dedication, persistence and helping others can contribute to your character and destiny.

I hope you enjoy GREATER – and are as inspired by Brandon’s story as much as I and so many others who knew him and know of him have been. He was a remarkable young man, and having the privilege of bringing his life to the big screen was a remarkable experience.

The 33 ~ movie

From Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures
comes the untold true story of
“The 33.”

In 2010, the eyes of the world turned to Chile, where 33 miners had been buried alive by  the catastrophic collapse of a 100-year-old gold and copper mine.  Over the next 69 days, an international team worked night and day in a desperate attempt to rescue the trapped men as their families and friends, as well as millions of people globally, waited and watched anxiously for any sign of hope. But 200 stories beneath the surface, in the suffocating heat and with tensions rising, provisions—and time—were quickly running out.

A story of resilience, personal transformation and triumph of the human spirit, the film takes us to the Earth’s darkest depths, revealing the psyches of the men trapped in the mine, and depicting the courage of both the miners and their families who refused to give up.

Based on the gripping true story of survival—and filmed with the cooperation of the miners, their families and their rescuers—“The 33” captures the never-before-seen actual events that unfolded, above and below ground, which became nothing less than a worldwide phenomenon.

The international cast is led by Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”), James Brolin, and Lou Diamond Phillips, with Bob Gunton and Gabriel Byrne.  The cast also includes Mario Casas, Jacob Vargas, Juan Pablo Raba, Oscar Nuñez, Tenoch Huerta, Marco Treviño, Adriana Barraza, Kate Del Castillo, Cote de Pablo, Elizabeth De Razzo and Naomi Scott.

Patricia Riggen directed “The 33” from a screenplay by Mikko Alanne, Oscar nominee Craig Borten (“Dallas Buyers Club”) and Michael Thomas, based on the screen story by Oscar nominee José Rivera (“The Motorcycle Diaries”) and the book Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar.  The film was produced by Oscar nominee Mike Medavoy (“Black Swan”), Robert Katz and Edward McGurn. Carlos Eugenio Lavin, Leopoldo Enriquez, Alan Zhang and José Luis Escolar served as executive producers.

The behind-the-scene creative team included cinematographer Checco Varese, production designer Marco Niro, editor Michael Tronick and Oscar-nominated costume designer Paco Delgado (“Les Misérables”).  The Academy Award-winning team of Alex Henning and Ben Grossmann (“Hugo”) supervised the visual effects.  The score was composed by Oscar winner James Horner (“Titanic”).

“The 33” was filmed on location in Chile’s harshly remote yet breathtakingly beautiful Atacama desert just kilometers away from where the event took place, and deep within two mines located in central Colombia.

“The 33” is a presentation of Alcon Entertainment, co-founded by CEOs Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson.  A Phoenix Pictures production, the film is being distributed domestically and in select international territories by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. This film has been rated PG-13 for a disaster sequence and some language.

August 5, 2010, had begun like any other day for the men who worked the San José Mine near Copiapó, Chile.  As the 33 miners descended deeper and deeper into the cavernous mine, they could not have imagined the events that would place them at the center of a drama that captivated the entire world.

Sixty-nine days later, on October 13th, more than a billion people watched as, one by one, those same men emerged from the ruins of the then-collapsed mine, which had held them captive for more than two grueling months.  It was a miracle for the miners and their families and a victory for the Chilean government and the international team of rescuers.  But there was much more to their inspiring story yet to be told.

Now, as we pass the five-year anniversary of the historic rescue, the feature film “The 33” shows for the first time the ordeal of the miners and their brave battle to survive even when faced with the grim reality that help might never reach them.  It also reveals the hope and resolve of their families, who did not know if their loved ones were even still alive, but would not let them be forgotten, as well as the determination of the rescuers who surmounted every hurdle in bringing them home.

The 33 opens Friday, November 13, 2015.

Woodlawn ~ Review

Woodlawn

Racial unrest and violence was destroying Birmingham, Alabama.  Desegregation mandates brought many new students to Woodlawn High School.  Tony Nathan is one of those who joined the 1973 Woodlawn student body.  A talented football player Tony experiences firsthand the unrest that is erupting across the city.

When a sports counselor requests time to meet with football team amazing and miraculous changes are about to begin in Alabama and especially in Birmingham.  A message of love rather than hate, of forgiveness affects a change that spread across a hurting city.

This is a powerful and moving movie.  It is amazing how much time has passed since this movie was set and yet we are still struggling with many of these same issues.  It is sad that we learn so little from the mistakes of the past and are so quick to deny what can bring change and healing.

We all have a purpose, a gift
and we need to live ours.
What is your God-given gift?

I was given access to an advance pre-release viewing of this movie in exchange for my review.

About the Movie:
A gifted high school football player must learn to boldly embrace his talent and his faith as he battles racial tensions on and off the field in WOODLAWN, a moving and inspirational new film based on the true story of how love and unity overcame hate and division in early 1970s Birmingham, Ala.
Tony Nathan (newcomer Caleb Castille) lands in a powder keg of anger and violence when he joins fellow African-American students at Woodlawn High School after its government-mandated desegregation in 1973. The Woodlawn Colonels football team is a microcosm of the problems at the school and in the city, which erupts in cross burnings and riots, and Coach Tandy Gerelds (Nic Bishop) is at a loss to solve these unprecedented challenges with his disciplinarian ways.
It’s only when Hank (Sean Astin), an outsider who has been radically affected by the message of hope and love he experienced at a Christian revival meeting, convinces Coach Gerelds to let him speak to the team that something truly remarkable begins to happen. More than 40 players, nearly the entire team, black and white, give their lives over to the “better way” Hank tells them is possible through following Jesus, and the change is so profound in them it affects their coach, their school and their community in ways no one could have imagined.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Impossible Dream ~ Review

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Impossible Dream
debuts on Hallmark this weekend (Sunday, October 4 at 9pm ET/PT, 8pm CT)

I was given the opportunity to preview tonight's newest Signed, Sealed, Delivered movie.
Unlike previous episodes/movies the members of the Department of Dead Letters
get involved before a letter comes into their possession.  But their abilities and determination
help them as they attempt to find out information on a missing soldier.

When a letter full of seeming nonsense crosses their path
this team works to solve what could be clues
that will bring a woman home to her father and her daughter.

But, as it is with most mysteries, time is running out...

If you are seeking an alternative to Sunday night football
or you are just in the mood for an uplifting movie
Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Impossible Dream
may be just what you are looking for.

Time is a priceless gift and all too often we don't appreciate
the time we are given with those closest to us
until all we have left are our memories.
This movie helps drive home this message
in a hopeful and lighthearted way.

The beloved POstables (Eric MabiusKristin BoothCrystal Lowe and Geoff Gustafson) go to Washington, D.C. to bring a damaged letter from an American prisoner of war before a Senate Hearing Committee. As the soldier’s fate hangs in the balance, Rita competes in the Miss Special Delivery Contest. The juxtaposition of events poignantly dramatizes the great price of freedom and how unaware civilians can be of the sacrifices of men and women in the Armed Forces.
The two-hour event guest stars Mark Valley and Christina Bianco.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered is a comedic drama that follows the lives of postal workers who transform themselves into an untraditional team of detectives to track down intended recipients of undeliverable mail. Their missions take them out of the office into an unpredictable world where redirected letters and packages can save lives, solve crimes, reunite old loves and change futures by arriving late but somehow on time.

Joseph: Beloved Son, Rejected Slave, Exalted Ruler ~ Review

Joseph is a young dreamer, spoiled by his father and so resented by his brothers that they secretly sell him to
a slave trader. Eventually landing in the dungeons of Egypt, the young man who lacked nothing suddenly finds himself alone, forgotten, and overwhelmed with despair. Yet it is in this deep prison that Joseph begins to change, and in his humility he cries out to God.

As the years pass, his growing faith and gift for interpreting dreams bring him to the attention of the Pharoah, who exalts the young man to a prominent position. Having learned humble obedience to God, Joseph becomes instrumental not only in saving Egypt but the brothers who initially betrayed him. Joseph is a moving story that powerfully demonstrates God's hand in all things, big and small.

Movie Producers appeal to movie goers

I've actually seen The Identical and really liked it, so I thought I'd pass on this email I received this evening. It includes a link to see the first 15 minutes of the film. which is a great way to get an idea about the movie...

Mainstream Critics Were Unkind,
But Christian Filmgoers and
Audiences Adored It!

The Identical released into theaters this weekend and hasn’t gotten the support that was hoped for from Christian moviegoers.
Mainstream critics gave the film a 5% approval rating, while audiences rated the film "A" or "B"!
Yes, the critics panned it.
But they also slammed God's Not Dead Mom's Night Out and Son of God .
And let's not forget that The Wizard of Oz Star Wars , and Gone With the Wind also were rated poorly.
Sometimes the critics can get it wrong.
The feedback from audiences is they loved the movie and would recommend it to their family and friends. They loved the wholesome story, family-friendly and faith-affirming themes in the film.

TIME FOR YOU TO MAKE THE DECISION FOR YOURSELF!

The producers have released the first 15 minutes of the film on www.theidenticalmovie.com for you to decide for yourself.

The Identical ~ Movie Review

The Identical

This Labor Day week-end I had the pleasure to view a pre-release screening of The Identical a movie starring Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd, Erin Cottrell, and Blake Rayne.  This movie is set to hit the BIG Screen this week, September 5th to be exact.  And this is movie was a delightful surprise - one I want to see again.  If you like good music (early rock and roll era) and an entertaining and powerful story rolled into one package you have to see this movie.

In 1935 William and Helen Hemsley are living in Decatur, Georgia, when they have twin sons.  But for Wiliam this is the worst possible news - he is out of work and jobs are scarce.  But on the night of his sons' birth a tent revival is taking place and William thinks he has found the perfect solution - the preacher Reese Wade and his wife Louise are unable to have children and have requested prayer.

In a heartbreaking decision the Hemsleys offer to give the Wades one of their sons because it is better to give than to receive.  Both boys are raised separately never knowing the other.  Ryan is raised believing he is the only child of a Tennessee preacher.   Dexler is raised believing his twin brother died at one day of age.

This movie is Ryan's story and his journey to discover his path and his calling.   And in an unexpected twist both young men are drawn to music.  One finds fame with his gift and the other is The Identical of the other.

This is a movie that is moving as one brother struggles with discovering who he is amid pressures to follow in his father's footsteps.  This is a movie that is suitable for the family (PG) and at 1 hour and 46 minutes it is a perfect length.

THE IDENTICAL
starring Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd and newcomer Blake Rayne
opens in theaters all across the country on Sept. 5, 2014.

The Power of Entertainment and the Bible

The power of media and entertainment is an interesting and intriguing phenomena.  How many times do we read a book only to seek out a dramatization of this same work or see a movie only to the search out the book on which it is based.  Well, apparently NOAH has had the same effect on the early movie goers as the following just released statistic shows:

In the days after the Noah Movie hit theaters,
people opening the Noah story in Genesis 6
increased about 300% in the U.S. & 245%
globally on the YouVersion Bible App.

Talk about the power of movies!

When's the last time you read the story of Noah from the Bible?
