Shatter ~ Review with Excerpt and Giveaway

Shatter
By Nikki Trionfo

It is Salem's junior year in high school, but nothing is as it should be. Her sister is dead and Salem is convinced that Carrie's death was no accident. But how do you prove something when no one believes it is possible?

Set in the heart of California's farming community of Verona a clash is about to take place one that will pit growers against pickers. And Salem finds herself in the middle with her father, a grower, and Carrie's legacy as a union supporter. Who could have wanted to hurt Carrie? And even more disturbing who buried a murdered worker in their orchard and is it related to Carrie's death?

Determined to learn the truth about Carrie and her death, Salem enters into a dangerous quest for the truth. One that brings to light a secret that Carrie was keeping, one that could explain why she was targeted. But without knowing the why of Carrie's actions a very large question still remains who. And finding the answer just may cost Salem her life.

The deeper she delves the more questions she raises and she questions who she can truly trust.  Time is running out as the area threatens to erupt over workers' rights.

This book will open the reader's eyes to the plight of migrant/immigrant workers and the fears that they face as the attempt to support their families. The power and draw of gangs is also explored throughout this book.

The book moves forward from the first day of school with flashbacks to key moments in Salem's life that play a role in explaining what lead to Carrie's death.  This is a powerful and moving story that teens will be drawn into. This is a realistic read that will expose readers to a world that they may know little about other than an occasional news snippet they hear.

I highly recommend this book for tween and teen readers and it would make an excellent choice for a book club reading selection. This will be a book to keep them reading all night - which with summer just around the corner would be an excellent all nighter.

I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review.

About the Book:

“We never knew there could be people in the orchard.
Dangerous people.”

When a mysterious explosion kills her sister, Salem becomes convinced the death was no accident--it was a conspiracy. But no one else at her high school believes her, and all she has so far are theories and clues. With Carrie's killers still out there, Salem's not sure who she can trust. If she can't she prove she’s right before it’s too late, the conspiracy might take another life—hers.

Excerpt:

The class is dead silent. Mr. White’s lips tighten. He swallows. There’s something
dangerous about the new guy. The teacher leans over AddyDay’s desk and spins her packet so he
can read the list of partnerships. “Fine. We’ll break up the threesome. You’ll pair with . . . Salem
Jefferson.”

At the sound of my name, I turn to look at my new partner.

The guy near the door is tall. He has the kind of incredible good looks that invite stares,
but that’s not the only reason he’s getting them now. The cursive lettering of a tattoo rises from
the opening of the guy’s worn flannel shirt. Two gold chains hang from his brown neck. A guy
accessorized in gang paraphernalia, not caked with it. His only completely visible marking is an
upside down V inked onto his right cheekbone, black and distinct. The tattoo calls my attention
for some reason, even though I’m sure I’ve never seen a symbol like that before. An upside
down V . . . it seems so familiar.

His expressionless, dark eyes dart to meet my gaze from under a stiff, backward-facing
ball cap. My classmates watch him stare at me.

“Salem Jefferson,” he says slowly, putting a slight emphasis on my last name. He waits
for my response.

I realize he knows exactly who Salem Jefferson is. Exactly who I am. I’m Carrie’s sister.

Terrified, I whirl back around to face forward. Gang members targeted Carrie, made her
frightened. Was he one of them? The skin between my shoulder blades tightens. Why were gang
guys after Carrie?

Unseen Road to Love
By Chelsea Curran

When you stray
too far from the path,
fate can have a way
of intervening...

Logan Atwood has a life that most would be envious of - a great job, a nice apartment but they only see the surface. Logan is estranged from his family and he's let the beliefs that he was raised with slid away. But in an, It's a Wonderful Life kind of experience he's about to see what he's missed by making one decision instead of another.

Going 5 years back in time to the decision that resulted in his life beginning its downward moral slide, Logan has a chance to relive his life. His friends and family see him as he was before the temptations of the city and his career pulled him away from them. And more importantly, Logan meets Addie Garrison a woman unlike any he's recently dated.

But like any "what if I'd done this instead" scenario Logan's must end when he awakens from his coma. Will the experiences he had while teetering on the edge of life or death make a lasting impression or will he simply return to the life he's been living?

Logan is getting a second chance at life and love.  And finding the woman who filled his dreams will also take him on a journey that will bring him back to the values that shaped his youth. But to complete his journey he will need to reconnect with those he hurt including his best friend.

We may not be able to go back and relive our lives but sometimes we are given a second chance at the life we didn't choose. The Unseen Road to Love is just such a story.  This is a story that focuses on faith and family and how both shape and support one.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher, Cedar Fort, with no expectations of a positive review.

From the outside, Logan Atwood’s life looks perfect: a successful career, a lavish lifestyle. But after a brutal car accident leaves him in a coma, Logan suddenly finds himself five years in the past. Only then does he realize that his perfect world may have cost him the woman of his dreams and the faith he once loved. Is it too late for Logan’s second chance?

FYI: This book has obvious references to Mormon / LDS beliefs which will not detract from the reading experience if one is not familiar with these beliefs,

Unexpected Love ~ Review

Unexpected Love
A Marriage of Convenience Anthology
By Heather Chapman
        Paula Kremser
          Mandi Ellsworth
            Ashtyn Newbold

A delightful assortment of four short stories that take the reader back in time where love isn't a guarantee before or after the "I do" is said.

First up is Ashbrook Abbey by Heather Chapman. Loftus Notley has determined how to name his heir - his two nephews James and Ambrose must prove responsible and worthy of Ashbrook Abbey. But the how is entirely up to them.

Ambrose feels that marriage to his uncle's beloved ward may be the advantage he needs. But Kate Mowbray, though not without means, desires a simple life. Can one who has enjoyed a life of ease be content with the life that Kate knows and loves? And if Ambrose's plan to win his uncle's good opinion and Ashbrook Abbey fails could he find love in a marriage with Kate and could he ever embrace her life?  Only time will tell...

Second is First Comes Marriage by Paula Kremser. Letty Cipriani's sister and brother-in-law have died, leaving behind two young children - Mae and George.  Unfortunately, Eva and John Forrester never had a will drawn up naming a guardian. And with John's uncle Hugh Morton demanding immediate custody of the children, Letty is worried. The arrival of John's brother Daniel adds an interesting and unexpected twist when he devises a plan to thwart his uncle's scheming - marriage. Can a marriage conceived solely to gain custody of their niece and nephew ever hope to become something more? Or will Daniel and Letty find themselves forever bound to someone they could never love? Or will first impressions give way to a happily ever after neither ever expected...

The third offering is The Price of Her Heart by Mandi Ellsworth. Faye McKinney is one of those McKinneys who is blessed with the curse of good intentions and bad timing. Unfortunately for Faye, her bad timing brought her to the attention of some people who now want her silenced for what she's seen. Worse they are willing to track her across the country - placing everyone she knows in danger. In an attempt to thwart the danger, a marriage to Deputy Sheriff Geoffrey Fattore is arranged.  Can marriage to a small town lawman keep her safe? Or will Faye just lead one more person into danger?

The final story is Beauty and the Beholder by Ashtyn Newbold. Fanny Clarke only wanted to be married to the man she loved but life had a different path - one that cost her everything. Percy Wellington's future was dark and without hope. When an arrangement was made to unite the two in marriage both were less than pleased. But Percy needed someone to help him in his new unfortunate position and Fanny was in need of a home and protection. But their personalities clash in such a way that a future of love, happiness or even friendship seems impossible. Misunderstandings seem inevitable between strangers but can they work past it and their past pain?

Sit back in your favorite chair with a cup of tea or coffee and prepare to read through the afternoon. These stories will brighten your day with their satisfying conclusions. If you've read any of these authors in the past you won't be disappointed. If these authors are new to you you'll want to pick up their previous works. Fans of clean historical romance fiction be sure to get a copy as soon as possible and be prepared to share when your friends hear you exclaiming over the fantabulous reading you experienced in Unexpected Love.

About the authors:
Heather Chapman: Being the youngest of four sisters (and one very tolerant older brother), Heather grew up on a steady diet of chocolate, Jane Austen, Anne of Green Gables, Audrey Hepburn, and the other staples of female literature and moviedom. These stories inspired Heather, and she began writing at a young age. After meeting and marrying her husband Mark, Heather graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University and settled down in a small farming community with her husband and four children. In her spare time, Heather enjoys volleyball, piano, the outdoors, and just about anything creative.

Mandi Ellsworth: Mandi is an avid reader, a slow jogger, and disinterested in board games of any kind. She lives in Utah with her husband, three children, and no pets.

Paula Kremser: Paula Kremser focused on a career in science for a few years after graduating from Brigham Young University. Several years later when she moved with her young family to England, Paula seized the opportunity to focus on her love of the Regency Era. The enchantment of the aristocracy and the fascinating stories from every stately home she visits have been both research and inspiration for her first novel, “Sophia,” and second, “To Suit a Suitor.”

Ashtyn Newbold
: Ashtyn Newbold discovered a love of writing early in high school. Inspired by regency period romance, she wrote her first novel at the age of sixteen. Because she can’t vacation in her favorite historical time periods, she writes about them instead. When not crafting handsome historical heroes, she enjoys baking, sewing, music, and spoiling her dog. She dreams of traveling to England and Ireland. Ashtyn is currently studying English and creative writing at Utah Valley University. She lives in Lehi, Utah with her family and is the author of “Mischief and Manors.”

Courting Carrie in Wonderland ~ Review

Courting Carrie in Wonderland
By Carla Kelly

Sergeant Major Ramsey Stiles was finally back in Yellowstone after serving in the Philippines in the Philippine-American War, (a war, I might mention, I don't recall ever being mentioned in any of my history classes and I still have the books).  The peace and magic of America's Wonderland just what he needed to heal from the horrors he experienced. The only problem, his new job comes with a lot more paperwork as he works to keep everything working together for the tourists, the army, and the animals.

Carrie McKay loves her job working with the Wylie Camping Company but, due to an incident in her past, her experiences are not the most pleasant thanks to a lying tongue that seeks to keep her from succeeding.

When Carrie finds herself in need of a little help Ramsey just happens to be nearby and this chance meeting is about to change both their lives in ways that neither would have ever anticipated or expected.

This story is more than a romance that takes place in the setting of the Yellowstone, one gets an education about Yellowstone in the earlier years. One also gets a look at the lack of appreciation those with power have in regards to the need for nature to balance itself. One is transported to this land that was known as Wonderland.

This historical romance is a lesson that you'll not mind learning and you'll want to revisit again and share with like-minded reading friends.  There is a lot of story packed into this nearly 400 paged book. Fans of Carla Kelly will enjoy this newest work.

I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All expressed opinions are my own.

About the book:
Struggling through college and balancing her summer job with the Wylie Camping Company, Carrie simply doesn’t have time to consider romance. But as the magic of Yellowstone starts making its way into their hearts, both begin to see love move up their priority list.

Dragonkyn ~ Review

Dragonkyn
By Nathan Smith Jones

For more than 1000 years a secret has lain hidden amongst humanity and the time of its awakening has arrived...

Marc Mondragon is your average twelve-year-old boy who tries to stay out of trouble which isn't easy when the town deputy has it out for the poor kids because they're poor.  But Marc has managed so far to avoid it.

But trouble is coming and it is something no one could have ever prepared for - not Marc nor his mom.  It starts with a dream - one that Marc actually remembers - one with a  fire and a creature he can't quite make out. When he starts displaying some unusual and unexplainable talents Marc knows something is happening to him. The only question is what...

But someone has been waiting for this day to come determined to keep the truth hidden and destroy not only Marc but all who are similarly transforming or have knowledge of it. A battle is coming and Marc is in danger on two fronts. He needs to control his emerging skills fast if he hopes to see tomorrow!

This is a fast-paced story that will appeal to middle-grade readers who are looking for adventure in their reading. Dragonkyn will appeal to those who enjoy the Dragons in Our Midst series from Bryan Davis. The ordinary becomes the extraordinary and growing up has never been quite so difficult!

This book could definitely be the first in the series the way it ends and I for one would be interested in seeing what comes next. The book is only 214 pages in length though the pacing doesn't make it feel this long. Looking for a weekend read - your tweens will thank you for this one!

I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a review, positive or otherwise. All expressed opinions are my own.

About the Book:
In his very pores, a new relationship
was FORMING with the gaseous alien
called FIRE that ate and breathed as he did,
and somehow he knew this relationship
would change his life FOREVER.

Stu Stories ~ Review

Stu Stories
The Adventures of Dirt Clod and his sidekick Bird Bones
By Patrick "Bird Bones" Hueller
Illustrations by Adam Record

This is a book that should appeal to middle grade readers.  Each chapter is a short story unto itself and builds on the one that came before. Stu Sanderson is that type of kid every teacher would cringe to have in their class and the other students would enjoy the antics.

Eighth grade will never be the same with Stu in the school. Which may or may not be a good thing. Stu is one of those students who draws attention - he is tall and really skinny. And he has a talent for disappearing from the classroom. And then there was an incident involving a flag pole in the middle of winter (need I say more).

Middle grade readers will laugh at Stu and the methods he uses to get his goal accomplished. Stu isn't a troublemaker - he just seems to be drawn to trouble like a magnet to metal. Stu could be called a gentle giant - he cares about the underdog and champions the younger students when he feels it is necessary. But all of Stu's adventures with his best friend Patrick aka "Bird Bones" may come to a tragic end with one last adventure.

At just over 140 pages this book is just right for most book report requirements. The illustrations compliment the book well. There are 14 chapters so the length of each won't be a deterrent to reluctant readers. Boys (and girls) will root for Stu and Patrick as they take on teachers, playground bullies, and secret crushes.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review ~ all opinions are my own.

About the Book:
Stu Sanderson is no ordinary eighth-grader. Not only is he seven feet tall, but he also vanishes into thin air, duels knights and ninjas, lifts the downtrodden, and woos the best-calved girl in school. Become a middle-grade legend with Stu and his sidekick, Bird Bones, on the journey of a lifetime in “Stu Stories.”

This is a fun read and from the opening lines one would never suspect one is about to enter a realm that is fantasy. The story is set both within a fairy world and the world as we know it. Making it through High School and Homecoming just took an unexpected turn! This story will appeal to readers of YA and who love a touch of fantasy and adventure in their stories. This is one book I would love if a sequel would be forthcoming as I'd love to know what comes next in the lives as these people.

I was provided a digital review copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review - all opinions expressed are my own.

Mischief & Manors ~ Review

Mischief & Manors
By Ashtyn Newbold

Breaking a promise might just be the
best way to keep it....

For five years Annette Downing has been living her promise to her parents - she has put every other interest out of her life except her little brothers. Orphaned at 14 years of age she is determined to protect her brothers Peter (7) and Charles (5) from the hateful abusive spite of her Aunt Ruth Filbee.

But when Aunt Ruth gives Annette an ultimatum ~ turn her brothers into proper gentlemen or see them shipped off to a Scottish orphanage ~ Annette welcomes the brief reprieve that an unexpected trip to Kellaway Manor promises. Her childhood memories of the place were pleasant except for Owen Kellaway and a fall from a tree. When Owen is asked by his mother to assist Annette in her efforts to tame her brothers she fears he may be as mischievous as her young brothers.

But turning two young boys into gentlemen may be hazardous to her health especially with Owen assisting. And it could prove even more hazardous to her heart ~ a heart that she has promised exclusively to Peter and Charles ~ now if only she can get her heart to listen to her.  But the love and kindness she finds at Kellaway Manor just may open the barriers she put around her heart to protect it from the cruelty she's experienced since her parents death.

But Kellaway Manor has something important for Annette to learn if only she will listen with her heart as well as her mind. Her promise to her parents was not a closet meant to shut her away from all life had to offer her. And sometimes tears are necessary to heal and not a sign of weakness.

This is a delightful story and one that I was sorry to have conclude. The characters cover a range of personalities which are true to life. Some one would enjoy getting to know over a cup of tea and others would send one looking for the nearest door through which to escape.

This is a story of family and of promise. Those who enjoy reading books set in the Regency time period will enjoy this book which is set in 1818.  Fans of Jane Austen will enjoy Mischief & Manors.
And Manors in this case refer to both manors and manners. I look forward to future works by this author who managed to keep me reading instead of baking for Christmas. (whoops!)

The future of her heart is at stake but so much more depends upon her decision.

I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a review, positive or otherwise - all opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:
I could feel battling forces within me,
one ordering me to pull away,
the other tempting me to lean closer...

When Annette Downing and her mischievous little brothers were orphaned, Annette closed off her heart, dedicating her life to raising her brothers and protecting them from her abusive aunt. But when her hateful aunt sends them to Kellaway Manor for the summer to reform the boys, she hopes for a relaxing escape. But Annette finds her closeted heart in jeopardy when reunited with the handsome Owen Kellaway, a childhood acquaintance and respected gentlemen. When Owen is enlisted to help the boys with their behavior, Annette wonders if he has just as much mischief up his sleeve as her brothers. Bound by a promise she made to her late parents, and amid a frightening mystery, Annette faces a difficult decision when she finds herself falling for Owen’s charm.

Constantly wondering what it is about her that drives the gentlemen away, Julia leaves London to visit a distant cousin for a couple of months. She is hoping to forget about husband hunting for a time, but she inadvertently finds herself in competition for Henry Chamberlain, the most desirable gentleman in Somersetshire. Marriage wouldn’t seem so detestable if she could marry him. But every young lady has the same dream of capturing his attention, so Julia knows she doesn’t have a chance. What she doesn’t know is that her desire to avoid Henry’s attention is the very thing that has caught it, but it’ll take some effort on Henry’s part to convince Julia of that.

A Novel of the Great War

The world is at war - though America has yet to enter the fray.  And for the young men and women who are seeking to make their way in this world Utah seems far removed from this carnage that has enveloped Europe.

But these young people are determined to make a difference no matter where their paths may take them. But can a world being torn apart allow a person to hold firmly to the beliefs that have shaped them and give their lives meaning? Or will the prejudices and horrors of war forever change them?

Reed Lewis is a young man from an agricultural background who is determined to be the best at everything he does and he is a bit of a flirt. His occasional impulsiveness can add more work to his life but he is a caring and dedicated person. He joins the Marines and proves his ability to lead.

Joseph Sorrell is a young Shoshone known for his skills on the race track with his mare Buckskin Nelly. He hopes that his efforts in the war will earn him the US citizenship he seeks. His friendship with Bert Lyman brings him into this circle of friends who see him as a person.

Clara Jensen works to open new doors that will allow her and all women to be seen as equals who deserve to be seen as people. She's willing to do her bit by serving overseas with the YMCA and her feisty attitude won't allow her to give up a cause she believes in.

Trudi Kessler is a Swiss-German immigrant who gives of what she has to help aid those whom the war has displaced. But in a world at war her very heritage is held against her by those who allow fear to dictate their prejudices.

The horrors of war are experienced by those both at home and abroad. And those who come home have to live with what they saw and did.

This book opens in November 1915 and concludes in April 1920. Sometimes it is hard to realize just how much happened during this decade. There is a reference to the sinking of the Titanic and even though I've been aware that this took place in 1912 it was a bit of a shock that it was so soon afterwards that the world was at war. The prejudices that were so prevalent are rather surprising - I seriously didn't realize some of the everyday things that had to be renamed because of their Germanic links.

This is an interesting look into the past - there is not much WWI fiction that focuses on residents of Utah to my knowledge. Take a step back in time that is approximately a century long with No Peace with the Dawn. In some ways this book makes me realize just how little we've accomplished in the last century in regard to the prejudices that have a way of tearing us apart.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review or otherwise - all opinions expressed are my own.

Where do you ask does fat-free cheese come into the equation? For This We are Soldiers ~ Review

For This We Are Soldiers
Tales of the Frontier Army
By Carla Kelly

This is a delightful collection of 6 short stories that are set during the years of the Indian Wars (1854-1890). Rather than focusing on the men who served this book looks at the women who gave up the lives they knew for the unknown isolation that awaited them.

The stories include Such Brave Men in which newly wed Emma Sanders learns about Army housing and the joys of being ranked. And her experiences with raking make her a professional by the end of her second day at the fort.

Break a Leg brings together three lonely people when a outbreak of injuries tests the skills of the hospital steward Colm Callahan. He calls on the skills of Audra Washington a former slave who is working as a servant for Captain and Mrs. Chambers. An injured actor gives the two just the right push to end their loneliness and find the family they always desired.

A Season for Heroes Jane Stokes learns the one terrible thing being a woman with the army is the waiting. Her father's company is overdue with no idea where they are. With her mother having a difficult pregnancy Jane learns just how true her mother's words are and what makes a man a hero.

Take a Memo some wandering milk cows leads to a war of memos between the  commanding officer and the post surgeon. And in the process of delivering the memos Corporal Theodore Sheppard has an excuse to converse with Millie Drummond who has captured his attention.

Mary Murphy is a short tale about the trials and sacrifices made by the company laundress.

A Leader of His Troops rounds out the selection as the path to happily ever after is impeded by unpredictable mail service and deserters.  When faced with a choice between love or duty Captain  Shaw has a choice to make that will determine whether he will ever be a leader to his troops.

Of the six stories my favorite is Break a Leg which is the longest of the six and allowed for the greatest character development. The characters are truly ones one could enjoy getting to know.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher for reviewing purposes with no expectation of a positive review, all opinions are my own.

The Cursed Dagger ~ Review

Cursed dagger
The Cursed Dagger
Ian Quicksilver #2
By Alyson Peterson

Ian Quicksilver has made a mess of it.  Not intentionally mind you, but he's in a mess none the less. He's finally regained his memory of who he really is - the Prince of Bankhirian and heir to the throne and the Quicksilver bloodline. The problem is it took nearly 16 years to remember and he only has until his 16th birthday to win the heart of Arianna, the Princess of Garfel. And Arianna doesn't remember who she is yet.

The curse that Silivus has placed them and their two planets under is about to cost them everything. And Silivus is determined to thwart any and all of Ian's attempts at winning Ari's heart. Not that he needs much help in that department with Ian's lack of skills and Corbin hanging around to provide protection.

But when Ari contracts a strange illness and time down to days, Ian has no choice but to accept Silivus's challenge in order to save the girl, his family, their worlds and the galaxy. But how do you win a challenge without knowing the rules? Ian is about to find out.

Fast paced adventure that picks up where Ian Quicksilver:The Warrior's Return ended. This book has a lot to keep you turning the pages - a quest, a challenge, evil magician, wise protector, death, a cursed dagger, and a dragon. Yes, a dragon and it's caught up in that challenge that Ian agreed to before knowing the rules. And if Ian loses so do the rest of us - goodbye galaxy!

Fans of YA fantasy will inhale this second book on the Ian Quicksilver series and I'm personally hoping for a third book - it could happen with how the story ends. Hint evil has a way of coming back and Silivus certainly falls into the evil category bending the rules just enough to work them to his favor.

And always remember
Never accept a challenge without knowing the rules...

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
In order to break an evil curse, Ian Quicksilver, heir to the Bankhirian throne, has two weeks to get Princess Arianna to fall for him. But first he must take care of a rampaging dragon and a maniacal magician before they destroy his home town, all while keeping his cover as a normal tenth grader at Puckerbush High! He'll have to find the courage to save two worlds-and pass his classes-in this witty sci-fi adventure.

About the Author:
Alyson Peterson lives in a mountainside gully—of all places—in northern Utah with her neurotic, shed-tastic dog, two ninja kids, and superhero husband. She spends her time painting, breaking bones at her Martial Arts class (mostly her own) and reading as many books as she can get her hands on. Alyson is the author of “Ian Quicksilver: The Warrior’s Return.”

Sigil in Shadow ~ Review

Sigil in Shadow
By Constance Roberts

You're only as safe as your secrets...

Ellary Dane has lived a simple life, one of good honest, hard work.  But when she comes to the aid of her father her life is about to become very complicated and endangered.  With a secret to keep hidden away from King Lorron and the nobility she fears discovery at any moment.

Yet her time is not one of constant wariness as she is apprenticed and given the opportunity to learn and expand her knowledge and skills.  Skills that she hopes to take back to her home and her father, if she is allowed to leave White Valley and its treacheries behind.

But Ellary's very appearance stirs up an unexpected link to the past one that has her questioning all that she thought she knew about herself and her family.  With a warning to "trust no one in White Valley", Ellary must determine who she can trust - her very life depends on it...

Raised as the daughter of a common laborer Ellary has no understanding of how the royal and noble structure works.  But she needs to learn quickly because someone seems determined to bring her down and they'll use any means necessary to do it.

When treachery strikes Ellary is implicated. Worse she and her supposed accomplice may never make it out of the dungeons to face their accusers.  The identity of their common enemy is a mystery to which neither holds the answer. And answering this question is a matter of survival if they hope to escape the block.

Sigil in Shadow is a delightful book that will appeal to YA fans who like clean reads and court intrigue. Sometimes the surface we see covers unfathomable depths we could never imagine and this book examines in part these hidden depths.

Though there is no mention of a sequel I would love to read further into the lives of these various characters who filled these pages.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

About the book:

Murdering a highborn officer of the crown.
Lying to King Lorron himself.
Even if I make it out of this alive,

retribution will surely be waiting patiently for me in the afterlife.

When nineteen-year-old Ellary Dane finds herself enrobed in riches and luxury in court, all as a result of being mistaken for someone who can call people back from the dead, she can hardly believe her luck. But that good fortune is short-lived—Ellary soon finds herself imprisoned, her privileges stripped, her life in shambles. To escape, she must trust the stranger labeled as her accomplice and face the lie that pushed her into the silent warfare of highborn society.

The Time Key ~ Review

The Time Key
By Melanie Bateman

Will mending the past leave his future in ruins?

Stanley Becker was a broken man.  For the last 6 six years he has been living an empty existence and he is about to make a change.  But fate has a different plan for Stanley.  He has a role to play one that will play out in the present, the future, and the past.

When Stanley come to the aid of a stranger he is taken on a journey that he never expected and he unwittingly places himself and those closest to him in danger.

What is the Time Key?  The sooner Stanley learns its purpose the sooner he'll answer his ever mounting questions, or not...

Someone is after the Time Key and the secret that it holds.  And Stanley must find a way to help Louis Vargas the stranger whose aid he came to. There are shadows and they are after Louis, Stanley, and Lena - a young girl who is an unexpected surprise.

The Time Key is told through the eyes of a narrator who is observing Stanley and the world around him.  This unique touch adds a bit more mystery to the story as one wonders who this unseen observer is and what their ultimate goal is in watching Stanley.

This book is a mix of The Book Thief with The Time Machine and perhaps a little touch of Dickens thrown in.  All together an enjoyable book that you may want to read again to see if there were any clues you may have missed the first time through. This book should appeal to mid to upper teens and fans of fantasy with an element of mystery.

I would be interested in reading future (or past) books about the Time Key and the various worlds that were hinted at.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

SHADOWS THAT MOVE ON THEIR
own, a mysterious device that looks like a
pocket watch, a man on the run from monsters
that exist in dreams—all are connected to Stanley
because he interrupted a mugging. Now Stanley
holds the Time Key, an object that allows him to
travel through time. With the extraordinary gift of
being able to see both the past and the future, he
may be the only one who can save his family.
