The Broken Prince ~ Review

The Broken Prince
The Broken Prince #1
By Kara Linaburg

Prince Milosh is bidding his time - not taking sides in the conflict between his father and the people he has subjugated to his rule. Ripped from the only home he has ever known by a father he didn't know he had, Milosh finds himself both needed and hated by King Thayer. Forced by the king to carry out his decrees or face more time being punished, Milosh finds himself falling into the darkness that is all too ready to consume him. But when he finds himself being questioned by a young peasant girl, he finds himself facing the very questions he has avoided.

Serena is one of the Gifted, which is a life sentence under King Thayer's rule. Marked, she must conceal who and what she is or face execution. But where Serena feels empathy towards Milosh, something she never expected, the other Marked feel only hatred.

When her brother Hunter sets out to save the young boys that Milosh is ordered to bring in to be trained as soldiers, he has signed his own death warrant. Determined to keep Hunter safe, Serena sets out to warn him but finds herself taken prisoner by Milosh. But Serena carries a secret, a secret that she has been ordered to bring about the death of Milosh. But Serena can she bring about the death of another? Even if it means keeping her brother safe, Serena is left with a weight upon her heart. Can she convince Milosh that the path he is on isn't the only choice before him?

In a land ruled by cruelty and fear can one young woman change the heart of a broken despairing prince? Or has the damage to his soul gone too deep to pull him from the darkness that pulls him deeper with every passing breath?

The Broken Prince is the first book in Kara Linaburg's Broken Prince series and absolutely must be read before reading book two The Crownless King.  This is an excellent book and highly recommended to fans of YA fantasy and fairy tale retelling styled books. The various characters are well balanced and intriguing to get to know.

In this land ruled by hatred and fear, hope is a thing to grasp and hold onto tightly. For as long as hope lives the darkness is held at bay.

About the Book:
In all the fairy tales the maiden falls in love with the prince...
but she has to remember that this isn’t a fairy tale.

Born into a kingdom where those of magical Gifts are rejected, feared, and even killed, Serena has spent her life striving to hide her ability and keep her younger brother safe.

The bastard son of the hated king and father he hardly knows, Prince Milosh is considered an outcast. He never expects to feel anything but contempt for the peasant girl who unexpectedly shows up in his life, forcing him to answer questions he never wished to ask.

When two very different worlds are thrown together under less than desirable circumstances, both hold deep judgment towards the other. But will they learn to see beyond their stations and birth so that they may defeat the coming darkness, or will labels given to them at birth continue to define them?

Deep Undercover ~ Review

Deep Undercover
True Blue K-9 Unit #4
By Lorena Worth

As the New York K-9 Unit continues to work on the murder of their boss and the disappearance of his K-9 partner Snapper, they have a serial bomber to deal with too. NYPD K-9 officers Brianne Hayes and Gavin Sutherland have suspicions about a realty group and decide that the only way to get the truth is to go undercover.

There is just one catch to Gavin's plan - they'll have to go undercover as a married couple. A couple with money to spend and a spoiled dog who goes everywhere with them. Yes, Gavin's K-9 partner Tommy is going undercover as a spoiled pooch in the hopes that he can sniff out evidence leading them to the bomber.

But when someone starts targeting the pair, the only question is whether it is related to their bomber or to Jordan's murder.

This is the fourth book in the True Blue K-9 series and it continues the story arc that has been running throughout the series - what happened to Jordan Jameson and why. Will the K-9 unit ever get to the truth? If you have not read the previous books that should not be a problem - as this story while having the series thread running through it focuses more on Gavin and Brianne's bomb detection work and their undercover operation. And as this is a Love Inspired Suspense there is of course a possible romance in their future - all clean reading too.

The Midnight Show ~ Reveiw

The Midnight Show
By Sarah Pennington

Dayo Temitrope has a problem - she's putting her career in jeopardy and she can't remember a thing about it the next morning when she wakes up. Worse she has now ruined her favorite pair of red heels. But to solve this mystery will take someone who is very discreet. Dayo doesn't want anyone to know what's happening as they would probably think she was totally wackers.

Fortunately her manager Geir Olvinsson knows just who will get the job done - private investigator Bastian Dennel. Bastian is sure he can get to the bottom of Dayo's problem with a bit of investigating but to do a thorough job of it he'll have to get a lot closer to Dayo than she wants.

But when the nightmare she lives each night is revealed she just might have to reconsider just how close she'll let a pi get.

The Midnight Show has a swing-era feel to it with a double dash of fairy/fantasy thrown in giving it a unique and distinct flavor all its own. This is a fun twist on the Twelve Dancing Princesses that will leave the reader wondering what will come next in the lives of these characters. This is my first experience with Sarah Pennington's work and I can say I appreciate the world that she has created and liked the interactions between the characters.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book

This mystery is the case of his dreams — and her nightmares.

By day, Dayo Temitrope is a swinging singer, an up-and-coming star with a shining career ahead of her. By night, she’s . . . well, she’s not sure, but whatever she does leaves her every morning with sore feet and worn-out shoes. And after six months, she’s had enough.

Enter Bastian Dennell, a private investigator just trying to get by. When Dayo hires him to find out where she goes at night, he’s sure it’s his big break: his chance to establish himself and get the funds to pay off his family’s debt. Plus, he gets to work with his favorite singer, even if she isn’t exactly what he expected. What could be better?

But first, he has to solve the case — which means navigating a tangled web of strange dreams, fair folk schemes, and show business. It will take all Bastian’s wits, along with the shining talents of Dayo herself, to figure out the truth before the curtains close for good on Dayo’s career.

A jazz-age-inspired twist on the Twelve Dancing Princesses from the author of Blood in the Snow.

Pinto ~ Review with Spotlight and Giveaway

 Pinto!
 By M.J. Evans

Pinto wants to do something with his life - something important. When George Beck purchases him in 1912 he is about to get just such a chance. A 20 thousand mile trip across the United States of America with a visit to all 48 state capitals what better way to make history?

But declaring their intentions was the easy part of this journey. With mountains to cross, and rivers to forge it will take determination and a whole lot of heart to go from start to finish. Pinto is the story of this true event. An event that took just over 3 years to complete.

Pinto is told from the perspective of Pinto, a young Morab (Morgan/Arabian cross), who was the only horse to complete the entire journey.  The "Overland Westerners" set a date of June 1, 1915, in which to arrive in San Francisco and bring their epic trek to its conclusion.

Pinto is an interesting look back at the US when the world was vastly different from what we know today. Social media was non-existent at this time - spreading the news of this once-in-a-lifetime undertaking was all word of mouth and getting newspaper coverage at their various stops. It wasn't easy and the Overland Westerners had to work to obtain the funds they needed to provide their day-to-day needs. Sometimes the kindness of a stranger helped them along their way.

Though it is written for a younger audience others will enjoy this book as well. Readers of American History and fans of a good horse story will enjoy this newly revealed historical gem. I have to admit the description intrigued me but the cover sold me on this book and I was not disappointed. We have an old book that has been in the family for years titled The Mountain Pony and The Pinto Colt and Pinto, though very different, reminded me of this book published in 1947. There are moments where defeat seems the likely victor but these Overland Westerners are not about to give up while they can still draw breath. Will their dream become reality? Only time will tell...

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

The mare and her herd are rescued from certain starvation and placed for adoption. In a sandy corral at Promise Ranch, a home for troubled teenage boys, the boy and the mare meet. Below the Moon ~ Review with Giveaway

8th Island Trilogy by Alexis Marie Chute

Join Us for this Book Series Tour from Jul 7 to Aug 10, 2020!

Below the Moon
The 8th Island Trilogy #2
By Alexis Marie Chute

Ella Wellsley is dying the search for the cure to her cure continues. Ella's friendship with Luggie is strained when book two opens following the tragic events of  Above the Star, which cost the lives of many.

Jarr-Wyn continues to change Archie who accidentally brought everyone to the planet Jarr with him. Is there something more to Archie's change or is it simply the unique properties of the planet at work? With his son, Arden found, though now in the form of the Olearons, Archie's quest is partially fulfilled and he is determined to see Ella cured. But the Olearon Lord has plans of his own and he is willing to use the love of the  Wellsleys to his advantage.

War is coming and if they are not careful the Wellsley family is going to find themselves caught in the middle as the various races seek to control the power of the Star and destroy all others.

Below the Moon is the second book in The 8th Island trilogy, a series that promises to reveal more as it continues. The storyline is excellent if a bit bloody and violent. Not bedtime reading by any stretch of the imagination unless your dreams are never troubled literary influences (I for one am not so I will admit to staying up late to read this). The book is intriguing, as the history of this world is further revealed and the secrets of the Wellsleys are revealed. Secrets that could change Jarr and all the worlds, known and unknown, forever. Will they be able to save them or will they be the catalysts of destruction?

If you are a fan of Scifi, fantasy, and parallel worlds, this is a book you don't want to miss. The unimaginable is real, and the impossible is probable, but not everything seen with the eyes is real until it is.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Midnight on the River Grey ~ Review

Midnight on the River Grey
By Abigail Wilson

Rebecca Hunter is all alone but for her Aunt Jo and her guardian - Mr. Lewis Browning, the man she believes responsible for her brother’s death. When Mr. Browning decides that Rebecca and her aunt should tale up residence in Greybourne Hall, Rebecca is less than pleased at the prospect. This is the opportunity she’s been hoping for - a chance to investigate her guardian and learn the truth of her brother’s death. Was it an accident? Or was it murder?

Greybourne Hall is a place of secrets and Rebecca soon finds that Mr. Browning is viewed by the locals with a measure of distrust. And she has been duly warned by those she meets to not trust the cold, reclusive man.

Lewis Browning has suffered losses that have shaped him into the man Rebecca has met. Her brother and her cousin Ellen never had a kind word to pass on through their letters. But as Rebecca gets to know her guardian she is confused as to just who he is. Is he the "Midnight Devil" that he is referred to or is he the man that her late father looked on almost as a son? She needs to know who he is before she can determine the truth about his role in her brother's death.

This is another delightful offering from Abigail Wilson that readers will enjoy getting lost between the pages of. Mystery and romance blend together so that Regency fans won't be disappointed. And if you haven't read the author's previous work In the Shadow of Croft Towers you will want to after reading this one. Both books can be read as a standalone though there are characters who are in both books.

About the Book:
She knew the house was keeping secrets.
If only the darkness would speak...

After her brother’s mysterious death, Rebecca Hunter vows to expose the man she believes responsible: Mr. Lewis Browning—known by the locals as the Midnight Devil and by Rebecca as her new guardian.

Summoned to his reclusive country estate to await her London season, Rebecca plans her own secret investigation among the darkened corridors of the mysterious Greybourne Hall. Yet Lewis Browning is not as she once imagined, and his motivation is horribly unclear. Recurrent nightmares and Rebecca’s restless feelings are further complicated by the shadow of her mother’s prior descent into madness and wondering if she, too, will follow the same heartbreaking path.

Even as midnight rides, strange injuries, and further murders lead back to Mr. Browning, Rebecca can’t ignore the subtle turn of her heart. Has she fallen for the man she swore would pay for her brother’s death? And moreover, can she trust him with her uncertain future?
