EXCERPT

The hair on Kara Nelson’s neck prickled as she sat behind the wheel of her car parked near the Miami Beach Marina. Something wasn’t right. If she’d been made...She flung the door open and ran.

A boom sounded, and heat stung her back. Running full speed, Kara tripped and flew through the air, hitting the pavement hard. Her hands smacked the ground first, and she flipped, her legs whipping over her head. She lay face up in the parking lot. Searing pain tore through her wrists, arms, shoulders, and neck.

A second explosion sent a ball of fire into the mid-morning air. Kara covered her head as debris smacked the ground around her. She lifted her head with effort, first looking at her dismantled undercover car then back at the marina. Drug lord, Luis Alvarado’s yacht had moved out to sea and with it, her chances of wrapping up a year-long investigation. Where had the second blast come from? She struggled to sit up. Then the world went black.

One More River to Cross ~ Review

One More River to Cross
By Jane Kirkpatrick

In 1844, a group headed from Missouri to California. The Stephens-Murphy-Townsend party was determined to be the first company to take wagons into California via the Sierra Nevada. Wagons through the mountains would be no easy task add to that this wasn't just a group of explorers but families - men, women, children and laden down wagons. But as they approach the final leg of their journey there is a decision to make - which path to pursue. Winter is showing its coming approach and the mountains before them are daunting.

When the health and safety of the various members of the party are in question the party splits into three smaller groups each pursuing a different goal. One group heads south, another continues on towards a hoped-for mountain pass, and the final group remains behind with their overladen wagons to protect their valuables. With families divided by this decision the certainty of their futures is further thrown into doubt - will they find one another at the end of their journeys. Who will live? Who will die?

One More River to Cross is a journey of perseverance of the human spirit in the face of mounting adversity. Each person no matter what course they took was faced with challenges that could make or break them and how they responded had a profound impact on those closest to them. This is what I most like about Jane Kirkpatrick's work - she brings history to life. She focuses on a chapter of history that people are familiar with but she finds the mostly unknown footnote and restores those who were involved in it to remembrance. She doesn't glamorize the trials her characters underwent and we experience their pain, anger, sorrows, joys, failures, and triumphs.

Fans of Historical Fiction will greatly appreciate this work as will those enjoy pre-Civil War Western expansion. I found it interesting that at this time that the California lands that are being settled is under Mexican rule and that the current influx of Americans is less than appreciated. Overall I highly recommend this book if you want excellence in writing.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Based on true events, this compelling survival story by award-winning novelist Jane Kirkpatrick is full of grit and endurance. Beset by storms, bad timing, and desperate decisions, 8 women, 17 children, and one man must outlast winter in the middle of the Sierra Nevada in 1844.

Christmas in Winter Hill ~ Review

Christmas in Winter Hill
By Melody Carlson

You just know Christmas is soon to be upon us when Melody Carlson's annual Christmas offering is released. Her books are easy to read and a perfect excuse to curl up in a cozy corner and read away a chilly, rainy, blustery Saturday afternoon. If you like Hallmark movies this is the book version that always your mind to fill in the background details.

Christmas in Winter Hill finds Krista Galloway and her daughter Emily moving to the Washington state community just weeks before Christmas. Krista has been hired as Winter Hill's first City Manager and she is more than a little surprised to learn that the annual Christmasville Festival is one of her most important first tasks. But when you've never been a big fan of Christmas this is a less than ideal job. But Krista's Emily is behind herself with anticipation - she LOVES everything Christmas and Winter Hill is perfect in her opinion.

With the help of the Harris family, Krista and Emily begin to settle into their new home. Nut change is never easy and when Krista raises some concerns she soon finds herse;f on the wrong side of small-town gossip/ Can Krista show that her concerns are legitimate while preserving the Christmasville Festival and finding her own Christmas spirit?

As with all of Melody's Christmas books, you know everything will end on a positive note, maybe not the way the main characters expect or even how the reader is anticipating. I like getting to know Krista who is the main focus of the story and whom we learn the most about. And Emily is a delightful eight-year-old who has a hope within her that just shines throughout the story and one that she wants to share with her mother.

This is a contemporary Christmas read. There is a hint of romance but more than anything this is a story of family, friendship, and finding where you belong. this book is 164 pages with a decent sized font so you won't need to squint your way through tiny print.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher - Revell, with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Krista Galloway is not a fan of Christmas. After her rough childhood in multiple foster homes, the holiday season just brings too many bad memories to the surface. But when she accepts a job as a city manager in the mountain town of Winter Hill, Washington, Christmas is part of the deal. The small town is famous for its Christmasville celebration, something that the city manager . . . well, manages.

As she tries to make her tiny new apartment feel like home for her and her eight-year-old daughter, Emily, Krista begins to wonder if this move was a mistake. She doesn't always feel welcomed in the close-knit town, and Emily continually wonders, "Where's the snow?"

Can a friendly stranger and his family help restore Krista's Christmas spirit before the big day?

My Fair Spinster ~ Review with Snippet and Giveaway

My Fair Spinster
Spinster Chronicles #4
By Rebecca Connolly

Grace Morledge is a failure and her father is determined to discover why before it is too late to rectify before all possibilities of marriage are impossible and she is forever a spinster. What he doesn't know is that Grace is a Spinster with a capital "S" and if he should ever discover it...

Aubrey Flint, (aka) Lord Ingram has been acquainted with the Morledge family since Grace was a young girl and in his opinion Grace is perfect. When Grace's father approaches him about examining her for faults or flaws his first reaction is to refuse the request. But when presented with the alternative he agrees so as to save Grace from as much pain as possible.

With help from the Spinsters, Aubrey has a list of things on which to examine Grace for - dancing, talking, socializing, writing... and he is going through the list very carefully. Though he took on this task most reluctantly he soon is having a most enjoyable time of it. After all spending time with such wit, beauty, and perfection is no hardship at all. Now if only he could find some trivial reason that Society's gentlemen have not sought out Grace he would be well pleased.

My Fair Spinster is the fourth book in The Spinster Chronicles and as anyone who has read the previous books knows the Spinsters are a most unusual group of friends who have been drawn together over the years by their lack of gentlemen with whom they have an understanding. Instead of letting their unmarried state define their existence they have embraced it and used their combined voices to guide Society through the printed word. Each Spinster is slowly changing their status but the pass to love is not easy and marked by misunderstandings and potential heartbreak. This offering from Rebecca Connolly is just as much fun to read as the previous three books. And you really should read the previous books to fully appreciate the Spinsters and their antics.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the author with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Title: My Fair Spinster
Series: The Spinster Chronicles
Genre:  Adult, Historical, Regency, Romance
Publisher: Phase Publishing
Publication date: October 1, 2019

The spinster next door…

Grace Morledge is a failure. Or so her father believes, as she is unmarried despite her advantages. In his mind, Grace must have significant flaws to be a spinster and something must be done about them. To her mortification, he demands she be fully examined and all flaws recorded. And the man he chooses is the worst possible candidate of all.

Aubrey Flint, Lord Ingram, has known Grace since childhood, but he never anticipated Lord Trenwick demanding he examine her for flaws. How can perfection have faults? Reluctantly, he accepts the assignment and finds far more than he bargained for, and perfection becomes more and more tempting.

Snippet:

“They were smart to include you.”
Grace jerked slightly to look at him again. “What?”
He nodded fervently. “I mean it. Georgie is no fool, Grace, and I have no doubt she made a study of the other unmarried women in Society. You are the best of the lot. It was only natural they should choose you.”
Her heart leapt for joy and seemed to be burning within her. “You don’t know the rest of the lot, Aubrey.”
“Don’t have to,” he quipped. “I know you.”
Oh, but the look in his eyes made her feel like a lovesick girl of twelve again, and it was all she could do to keep from smiling an accompanying lovesick smile that would have been entirely too obvious.
Not that she was lovesick. She was simply touched. And embarrassed. And perhaps a bit feverish.
That was all.
Aubrey blinked and the look was gone. He slapped his thighs and rose fluidly, running a hand through his hair and disheveling it in a way that reminded her of the boy she had known in Derbyshire, and her heart lurched.
“Well, I suppose that’s enough for today,” he rambled, his words not quite as crisp as normal. “I will see you tomorrow at the Sterlings’, and I will assess your interaction with various people at that point.”
Grace slowly rose, watching Aubrey curiously. “Very well. Miranda will be there, you know. We could confront her.”
“Yes, yes, excellent thought,” he replied absently. “I’ll bring my suit of armor for whatever she tosses in retaliation.”
Grace laughed at the image that brought, and Aubrey seemed to shudder at it.
“Right,” he said, turning to her and bowing. “Good day, Grace.”
“Good day, Aubrey.”
He left before she finished, and she stared after him, still curious.
What in the world?
Then her mother crossed the corridor, casting another knowing look at Grace. All curiosity and delight evaporated swiftly, and Grace snapped back into discontent, moving quickly towards the music room.
He was not good for her.
He couldn’t be.

May WarrenWyatt
The Montana Marshalls #4
By Susan May Warren

Five years ago hearts were broken without a word spoken between them. But Coco Stanley is in trouble and Wyatt Marshall knows that he is the only one capable of saving her. There is just one problem Coco is somewhere in Russia and Wyatt doesn't speak the language or have any idea how he will even locate her. He does have a plan for getting into the country using his hockey playing skills for the Minnesota Blue Ox as his invitation in.

Coco Stanley has been hiding her identity for years. Her life has been in danger since her father came into a position of power within the Russian government. She's tired of hiding and running and keeping secrets. And the biggest secret of her life is also her greatest weakness.

Meanwhile, Wyatt's sister RJ is in her own situation stemming from her own time in Russia. And she needs Wyatt to meet up with the man who saved her life and Coco's if she has any hope of clearing her name.  Hiding out on the family's ranch in Montana, RJ has more than enough time on her hands and she has regrets about what happened, especially leaving York behind.

Yup, there is a whole lot of chaos in the lives of the Marshall siblings and it isn't about to get better anytime soon as danger seems to be especially drawn to them and theirs. Each successive book just adds one more layer to this most interesting web that the Marshall family finds itself caught up in - one that includes assassins, the Russian mob, and the CIA.

If you like family drama with romance and suspense you will want to read this series. And believe me, you need to read all the books in order as each book builds upon those that came before. Fans of Susan May Warren's other series will enjoy that some of her previous characters make appearances in this one. And there is a teaser for the next book that will literally leave you anticipating the next book.

Diamond in the Rough ~ Review with Giveaway

Diamond in the Rough
American Heiresses #2
By Jen Turano

Miss Poppy Garrison is in her first New York Season in exchange for her grandmother's help for the financial difficulties in which her family has been caught up in through no fault of their own. There is just one little problem, Poppy has absolutely no idea how to behave among the New York Four Hundred, much to her grandmother's dismay.

With her future on the line, Poppy seems unable to keep herself from one social mishap after another and is in desperate need of assistance. Reginald Blackburn, who is assisting his cousin - Charles Wynn, Ninth Earl of Lonsdale - in his search for a wife, is enlisted by Viola Van Rensselaer in tutoring Poppy in what she needs to know. Reginald is a no-nonsense type person, who to keep the title hunting American heiresses, at bay has concealed his identity as the second son of a duke. He is always up for a challenge and unfortunately Poppy just might be a challenge he is unable to overcome. She's everything he doesn't like in a young outspoken, exuberant, and willful -  and if he's not careful she just may turn his world upside down.

Diamond in the Rough is, like most if not of Jen Turano's works a fun read. Poppy is a walking disaster in the eyes of society but she tries her best to make the most of her current situation. And of course, there is a bit danger involved that seemingly points to someone deliberately "helping" Poppy's missteps occur. But what's a lady to do when she finds herself out her element? Well if you are Poppy Garrison you just do the best you can and accept the blame for what goes wrong.

If you like light-hearted historical fiction this is a most delightful read. Though this is the second book in the American Heiresses series it can easily be read on its own and thoroughly enjoyed. Poppy is a fun character who is caring and would be a most unique friend. Reginald is interesting seeing himself one way while those around him see something else and Poppy just might be the best thing to happen to him.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
To save her family from financial ruin, Miss Poppy Garrison accepts an unusual proposition to participate in the New York social season in exchange for her grandmother settling a family loan that has unexpectedly come due. Ill-equipped to handle the intricacies of mingling within the New York Four Hundred, Poppy becomes embroiled in one hilarious fiasco after another, doomed to suffer a grand societal failure instead of being deemed the diamond of the first water her grandmother longs for her to become.
Reginald Blackburn, second son of a duke, has been forced to travel to America to help his cousin, Charles Wynn, Earl of Lonsdale, find an American heiress to wed in order to shore up his family estate that is in desperate need of funds. Reginald himself has no interest in finding an heiress to marry, but when Poppy’s grandmother asks him to give etiquette lessons to Poppy, he swiftly discovers he may be in for much more than he bargained for.

One Final Breath ~ Review

One Final Breath
Dive Team Investigations #3
By Lynn H. Blackburn

What can I say other than this was a really great read. Well, I guess I could say more than that and I will. First off this book is the third in the Dive Team Investigations series and this time the focus is on Detective Gabe Chavez and the Dive Team Captain Anissa Bell and their rather complex working relationship.

When a shooting on Lake Porter claims the life of a teenager and leaves a devastated survivor behind Anissa and Gabe's pasts raise their heads in regards to this case. Gabe because of the links to his blown undercover career and Anissa because of her own survivor's guilt. But the timing of the shooting leaves little evidence and leads are in short supply. As lead investigator Gabe is determined that this is one case that won't go cold.

Soon the team is faced with two cases one that seems to be a personal threat against Anissa that places more than one team member in danger. The more they look for a reason or a suspect the more everything seems to point to Anissa's past but could this case have a bearing on their current shooting as well?

Without giving anything away I will say the perpetrator is extremely determined and very vengeful. Definitely not the type of person to tick off. And believe me, you most definitely won't guess who is behind what is going on. The intensity grows as the story progresses and there is no dragging that detracts from the pacing. Fans of Lynette Eason's work and her Blue Justice series will enjoy a quick appearance once again from Detective Brady St. John. One doesn't have to read the previous two books in this series before reading this one but it does help with understanding references to previous events if you read the series in order.

This is fairly clean reading with a touch of violence (murder isn't too clean) but the romance is completely clean reading in this Romantic Suspense. Would make a good book club selection that would have a wide range of appeal satisfying the often varied tastes of a group's readers. This is a page-turner that will keep you reading long into the night.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion, All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Revenge has no statute of limitations...

When investigator Gabriel Chavez had his cover blown by an aggressive reporter, the silver lining was being able to rejoin the dive team. The downside? Dive team captain Anissa Bell—a woman who both fascinates and frustrates him.

Anissa grew up as a missionary kid on the Micronesian island of Yap and always planned to return after college. But she remained stateside, determined to solve the case that haunts her—the murder of her best friend and the disappearance of a three-year-old child.

When Anissa’s fractured past collides with Gabe’s investigation into the tragic shooting death of a teenage boy in Lake Porter, they’ll have to put their complicated history with each other aside in order to uncover the identity of a killer.
