A Simple Song ~ Review

A Simple Song: A Novel
By Melody Carlson

When her father's painful injury, which keeps him from working, threatens to take away her family's livelihood Katrina is forced to make a decision that takes from her family, her friends, and her community.  Can the voice that she has been given truly be a gift from God or is it from the devil so that she will seek vainglory and the English world?

What 17 year old girl wouldn't be tempted by the thought of wealth and fame?  There are some who wouldn't and Katrina Yoder is one of them.  Katrina puts herself out of her comfort zone, but only to help her father and her family through a physically and emotionally difficult and trying time.

I have to say I really dislike Aunt Fannie and her attitude towards her injured brother-in-law.  But I'd also like to know why she feels like that towards that family, as she phrases it.

I like Aunt Alma, but when Katrina wanted to stay true to her Amish beliefs in how she dressed I think Alma could have been more supportive and understanding.  But I assume that Alma was just as overwhelmed by the situation as Katrina was.  Sometimes ignorance and outside pressures can force us into uncomfortable situations and compromises, but that inner voice that makes us uncomfortable is speaking to us for a reason.

I like the fact that Katrina was a Godly influence on her new friend Breezy but her helpful nature and her stand.  We don't know how we will affect those around us by our behavior so we should always be true to our beliefs and faith in God.  Katrina was an influence of goodness to those she befriended at the American Star competition and to those watching on television.

But while she is away from her community Katrina learns about the woman who was her Mammi (grandmother) and how she spent her non-Amish years.  Sometimes the discovery of another's pain or joy brings into focus what is truly important in our own lives and A Simple Song is just such a story.

From Amish country to Hollywood, Katrina Yoder is in for the ride of her life!

Katrina Yoder loves to sing, but her strict Amish parents view her singing as vain. Still, Katrina's best friend, Bekka, is convinced Katrina is good enough to try out for American Star, a televised singing competition that Bekka has been secretly watching. Katrina has a good voice, but really--try out for a TV show? Her parents would probably disown her!

But when her family faces a crisis, it seems to Katrina that the competition might be the way to get the money needed to cover the emergency expenses.

How will Katrina handle herself as an Amish teenager out in the world? Is she truly good enough to win? Will her parents ever forgive her? And will she be accepted back into her community when it's all over?

My Very First Noah's Ark Playtime ~ Review

My Very First Noah's Ark Playtime
Activity Book with Stickers
by Lois Rock
Illustrated by Alex Ayliffe

Published by Lion Children's Books

This is a cute book to share the story of Noah's Ark with your little ones in an educational yet fun way.  There are stickers to place  throughout the book some of which are able to be used as a game to take the animals to the ark.  There are counting activities.  There is a fun activity where you make gingerbread and form it into an ark shape.

This little activity book packs a lot of fun into 16 pages.  Have it on hand for a rainy day, a long road trip or when your little one is home sick in bed.  This would also be a great for VBS or Sunday School.  But be sure to read an account of this story from the Bible to your little ones so that they get the full story as this story is very simple.

Avenger ~ Review

Avenger
A Halflings Novel
By Heather Burch

Sometimes facing your destiny means risking everything.

Something is coming after Nikki and nothing can stop it.  Raven is determined to keep Nikki safe and takes her into hiding.  But where can you hide when your blood is calling to your enemy?

The other Halflings are hiding something from Nikki, something about her past and Vessler.  Something that Nikki feels she needs to know.  But the  others are trying to protect Nikki from the truth of what Vessler has planned for her.

Nikki's need to know gives Vessler what he needs to bring Nikki to him of her own free will.  Now if he can just turn her Nikki will become the mother to a race of Darklings who will destroy the Halflings.

Avenger is Nikki's journey of discovery.  A journey of the spiritual.  A journey of the heart.  A journey of self.  And a journey of sacrifice.  Join Nikki as she discovers what it is to be a Halfling and the desires of her heart.

Avenger brings Nikki's journey of discovery to an exciting and emotional end.  I highly recommend Avenger to anyone who has read the previous two books Halfings and Guardian and well as fans of YA and speculative Christian fiction.

Deadly Devotion ~ Review

Deadly Devotion
Port Aster Secrets #1
By Sandra Orchard

Having returned home following the death of his mother, former FBI agent Tom Parker is having a hard time adjusting to the 15 years of change that have occurred in Port Aster during his absence.  Adding to his stress is Kate Adams who is convinced that her friend and mentor Daisy Leacock didn't commit suicide.

Kate isn't going to just sit around and let Daisy's name and reputation be ruined by the police and their determination that Daisy killed herself with Marigolds!  But Kate's personal investigation is pulling her into more danger than she can possible imagine, at least in Detective Parker's opinion.  But Kate doesn't trust police and Tom Parker's continual appearances are grating on her though she is perhaps a little attracted to him, maybe.

But Port Aster is a community of secrets, but which secret pertains to Daisy's death?  Kate wants to believe everyone while Tom is suspicious of everyone, how can two opposites ever hope to have something more than a cordial disagreement at best?  Read Deadly Devotions and find out.

Is it possible to truly know someone so well that you can say with absolute certainty whether or not they would or would not do a certain act?  How well do you know the person you are closest to?  This is the premise of Deadly Devotion.  Trust - can you trust someone with the truth about who you are?  This is the question that confronts Kate and Tom as they re-examine Daisy's last days and the evidence that could lead them to a murderer and to each other.

This is a whodunit that would stump Jessica Fletcher if she took a trip to Canada and wound up in Port Aster.  This isn't Mayberry, but I wouldn't mind visiting and having a cup of freshly brewed tea or maybe not the tea!

I can't wait to make a second visit with book 2 of which there is a sneak peek.  (More secrets are about to come to light and Kate is again caught up in the middle of it all!)

The Winnowing Season ~ Review

The Winnowing Season
Amish Vines and Orchards Book 2
by Cindy Woodsmall

The Winnowing Season picks up where A Season for Tending leaves off.  But the hope for a new beginning in Maine is clouded when on the eve of their move Rhoda is called to appear before the church elders and Jacob's past calls him away.

With such a start what does Maine hold for the King and Byler families?

As trouble follows them from Pennsylvania to Orchard Bend, Maine Rhoda begins to wonder why she seems to attract trouble wherever she goes.  As Rhoda struggles with trying to ignore her gift she also has to deal with Jacob's absence and Samuel's distant behavior.

Samuel is keeping a secret that could destroy what they are trying to create and Jacob's past could destroy the growing relationship he and Rhoda are nurturing.  Leah is planning to use this move as a chance spread her wings and to learn more about the English world and she wants Landon's help to do it.  As the King siblings and Rhoda try to discover who they really are a new danger threatens to destroy them from the outside.

Can they be true to their promises or will they fall before their testing is completed?  Only time will tell....

The Winnowing Season is a fabulous follow-up to A Season of Tending as the characters grow in their relationships with one another.  One feels so much for Rhoda as she has to deal with the suspicions of those around her as well as Jacob's absences.  Samuel's confusion about his partnership/friendship with Rhoda and his loyalty to his brother are both touching and at time exacerbating in the extreme.

I am looking forward to the third book in the Amish Vines and Gardens series and hope for a happier ending and also answers to Rhoda's  intuitions that were plaguing her in regard to her new neighbors.  I liked the struggles that these characters were wrestling with as it made them more relatable and sympathetic.  Though Jacob really needed to get a backbone a little sooner, in my opinion, in his dealings with Sandra.

Reign:The Chronicles of Queen Jezebel

Reign: The Chronicles of Queen Jezebel
Lost Loves of the Bible #3
By Ginger Garrett

If you have ever wondered about Jezebel and her life Reign gives you a possible account of what her life may have been like and it isn't pretty!

Jezebel has never been someone that normal people would aspire to be like and Reign makes that feeling all the more certain.  There are moments when you feel sorry for her and how her life is playing out, but then she does something that makes you regret those moments of empathy.

The unwanted younger twin, Jezebel grew to dislike and even hate her sister.  But her sister achieved something Jezebel couldn't death.  As Jezebel grows into her preteen and teenage years she takes an active role in the Phoenician worship of Baal and Asherah even helping to convince mothers to sacrifice their children to these gods.

But when she marries Prince Ahab of Israel (against her will, I might add) she brings her idolatrous, immoral religion with her thus bringing God's curse upon the nation that God had established.  But when she is called upon to open her heart up to the one true God - Yahweh, she refuses.  Jezebel has determined that she has been given life so that she might destroy the God of Israel.

Jezebel's life is a sad one.  She spurns all attempts of anyone to reach out to her.  She has no emotional attachment to her own children and views them only as a means to an end - power!  This an interesting look at Israel at the time of Elijah, Obadiah, and Micah.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher David C. Cook through BookFun.org in exchange for my honest review.

Beyond the Drama, Her Heart Was Real
From the moment her marriage to prince Ahab thrusts her into the intrigues of palace life, Jezebel’s exotic beauty opens doors and her will breaks down walls. Torn from her homeland and wed to power in a strange country, Jezebel vows to create a legacy and power all her own. Some might call her a manipulative schemer, bent on having her way. But they don’t know the whole story, and she was much, much worse.

As she moves through the halls of power, her heart struggles between devotion to the gods she worships, the prince who loves her, and her thirst for revenge. She sparks a battle between her strangely powerless gods and the God of palace administrator Obadiah-a God who confronts her with surprising might. She will fight, though victory may cost her everything.
