About the Book:

TitleThe World is Around You, But You Are In Your Car
Genre: History/Civilization
Author: William Trently
Publisher: iUniverse
Pages: 148
Language: English
ISBN – 978-1-44014-284-0

The World is Around You, but You are in Your Car is a work of fiction wrapped around an essay that describes an American problem—the relentless pursuit of the perfect life—and its negative consequences that adversely affect progress and behavior toward the rest of the world. “I want it, and I want it now,” with its shortage of self-restraint, has been taken to levels not reached before, and the insidious ramifications are eye-opening: the easy disposability of people or principles if these should obstruct the path to the perfect life, the mental depression from the strains of struggling to keep up with neighbors, or the isolation from reality as people become more and more comfortable in their plush living rooms and cars.

The tale brings history’s great philosophers together to sound an alarm and talk about ways to slow the relentless pursuit. They have already debated the relevant issues with each other; here in this story, their role is only to inform us of their conclusions. They discuss the external and internal controls that restrain the pursuit, agreeing that internal control, involving individual self-regulation, is more effective and desired than external control, primarily because of its greater conduciveness to freedom, the crown jewel of this civilization.

Summer Abernathy wakes up one morning to find her husband missing, three men in her home intent on finding him, and the life she's been living based on a lie. Which Kyle Abernathy did she marry? The computer programmer she met in line at the bank? Or the one who was apparently using that image as a cover?

The search for her husband--and answers--takes Summer ever deeper into a world of organized crime where people are used one moment and discarded the next. And with her deepest relationship of trust already shattered, Summer doesn't know who to believe.

Always thrilling, bestselling author Lynette Eason outdoes herself in this taut, breakneck story of lies, loyalties, and love that will have you up all night to discover the truth hidden in the shadows.

His Wounded Heart ~ Review

His Wounded Heart
By R.L. Syme

Sean Raleigh has given up and he's tired of the endless stream of nurses hired to aid him in his recovery - a recovery his doctor told him would never happen.  And everyone and anyone within range of Sean is going to get the full range of his bitterness and pain.  His plan works great until his best friend/roommate Carter Grant has a friend come to the area for a promised tour.

Jaclyn Dalton is unlike any other Christian he has ever meet.  She doesn't look down on his disability with pity or avoidance and she seems to genuinely care about him as a person.  But how could she or is she trying become his new physical therapist planted by his best friend and his father?

Jaclyn has her own wounds - her heart was broken by a man who cares only for his own pleasure and he doesn't care whom he hurts and destroys along the way.  Until she can deal with her own damaged heart she cannot open her heart to what she and Sean could have.

His Wounded Heart is told from both Sean and Jaclyn's points of view and it is a story of the power of true Christian love in changing a heart.  This is a book that is a quick read - I did it in one afternoon and found it an enjoyable afternoon escape as we are gripped in the arctic tundra that is making its presence known.  -15* is definitely an afternoon for reading and this book hit the spot.

I was provided a copy of this book by TBCN/BookFun and Pelican Book Group in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
Sean Raleigh has fired every nurse and physical therapist within firing radius. He wants to be left alone in his invalid despair. But when his best friend hires the beautiful Jaclyn Dalton, Sean’s curiosity about her selflessness and unwavering faith keeps him from sending her away.

Jaclyn needs this job to stay in Montana, but Sean's icy heart and raging bitterness threaten to drive her away. He believes his immobility is a punishment from some controlling but distant deity, yet she sees him crying out for a compassionate God he doesn't believe in. Jaclyn wants to help Sean recognize the grace that can be his, even if she has to leave him to do it, which draws her into a surprising level of emotional vulnerability—a vulnerability that will be the key to healing Sean’s wounded heart.

All God's Children ~ Review

All God's Children
The Peacemakers Book 1
By Anna Schmidt

Elizabeth (Beth) Bridgewater is living on the edge of danger - she's an American Quaker living in Munich during World War II.  She came to German eight years earlier to help care for her aunt and cousin and now she can't leave even if she wanted to.  She gave away her papers and has no way to leave much less travel within the country.

When her Uncle Franz takes in a boarder Aunt Ilse is understandably concerned - why would the son of a well placed Nazi government official stay with his former professor?  Aunt Ilse fears that her American born niece is under suspicion and that Josef Buch is in fact a spy.

But first opinions are not necessarily right and Josef and Beth are soon drawn into a peaceful antiwar resistance.  If only the Nazis would respond in kind, but if their actions are discovered they are almost assured of a sentence of death.

Beth is impulsive in her compassion as is evidenced in some of the situations in which she finds herself, but how can a person with even an ounce of compassion do differently when lives are at stake simply because of their heritage or associations?

Josef is an enigma to the Schneider family, but he cares for them and is determined to save them if at all possible.  Josef is a thinker and wants to plan out everything, but he is at time impatient in his desire to keep those he cares about safe.

All God's Children is reminiscent of Brock and Bodie Thoene's Zion Covenant series.  And for those who enjoy historical fiction set in the turbulent years when World War II threatened Europe and those who didn't fit the approved mold of perfection this is a book that should appeal.  The glimpses into the Quaker lifestyle are also intriguing and whet one's interest in learning more.  I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes reading good fiction that is well-written and entertaining.  I am eagerly looking forward to reading the second book in this series.

Outcasts ~ Review

Outcasts
The Safe Lands #2
By Jill Williamson

If you've read Captives the first book in The Safe Lands trilogy, you've probably been waiting for Outcasts.  Well, your wait ends on January 7, 2014, and believe it is well worth the wait!

The Captives from Glenrock have taken refuge within the Safe Lands with a group of rebels, but these rebels have goals that are at odds with those that Levi has prioritized for the survivors of Glenrock. After all who cares about the people who call the Safe Lands home?

To Levi's annoyance his brothers Mason and Omar both have cares about the Safe Landers - and Mason may have developed an attraction to the doctor under whom he works.  Mason is determined to find a cure for the disease that afflicts the Safe Landers and Omar.  Meanwhile Omar is determined to make the Safe Landers aware of the true state of their world.

When the rebels demands threaten the safety of those closest to him Levi moves everyone to a new location with the assistance of Zane.  This move gives everyone a glimpse of Papa Eli that had not yet known and adds more to the history of Glenrock.  (Hoping for a prequel - all these little tidbits are just so tempting!!!  Kind of like having a box of your favorite chocolates and knowing you can't have them yet.)

Subterfuge and deception reign supreme in the Safe Lands and a master illusionist is firmly in control. Questions for which there seem to be no answers may be of utmost importance.  What is liberation?  Is it truly the end of life or is it something more sinister.  Can this disease be cured and why is noone allowed access to the data about it?

Mason, Omar, and Shaylinn are determined to make a difference in the Safe Lands, but it may cost them more than they were expecting.  But sometimes doing the right thing is worth the cost even if it means liberation.  And someone is about to pay the ultimate price for freedom....

When you finish reading Outcasts you will be eagerly awaiting Rebels due Summer 2014 - mark your calendars and start the countdown!  If Outcasts is any example this series should end in a fantabulous manner and book 3 should be the best of the series!  Another winner from Jill Williamson!

In exchange for my honest and timely review I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book by Jill Williamson and Blink, an imprint of Zondervan.
