Web of Deceit ~ Review

Web of Deceit
An Agents Under Fire Novel #1
By Susan Sleeman

Three years ago he tried to kill her, instead he killed her sister.

For three years she's been searching for him while he has been planning his revenge.  And today revenge is about to come knocking on her door.  Kaitlyn Knight's sister was killed by the man who had promised to love and protect her forever.  But when Kait discovers his secret identity as a murderous cyber-criminal her sister Abby takes the bullet meant for her.

When an anomalous computer code linked to her brother-in-law leads the FBI and Portland PD to the scene of a gruesome murder Kait is convinced that Fenton Rhodes is behind it.  Evidence is inconclusive - nothing is left to point to any one person.

Portland PD Detective Sam Murdock has seen it all when it comes to homicides.  At least he thought he had until he was called to the scene of this homicide.  The brutal and methodical methods used are unique to this crime until it becomes obvious they have a serial killer determined to taunt FBI agent Kaitlyn Knight.

Combining their efforts the FBI and Portland PD are determined to stop this killer before he strikes again and he's made it clear that Kait is his ultimate target.

If you are looking for a suspense filled thriller to keep you turning the pages this first book in Susan Sleeman's Agents Under Fire series is one you'll want to pick-up.

About the Book:
Will he help find her sister's killer . . . or lead the killer to her door?

When FBI Agent Kaitlyn Knight discovers her brother-in-law is Vyper-the notorious cyber-criminal and murderer wanted by the FBI-Kait doesn't question her duty to arrest him. But when he murders her sister in front of her, leaving her infant niece motherless, Kait vows to hunt him down and bring him to justice while raising the baby.

Three years later, and not even a whisper of a lead in her search, Kait is about to give up hope of ever finding Vyper. All of that changes when he goes on a murderous spree taunting Kait with clues that she and homicide detective Sam Murdock must solve before her devious brother-in-law takes another life.

As the body count rises, Sam discovers the killing spree is really about striking back at Kait. He must put everything on the line-including the relationship he's developed with Kait-to ensure her safety. The killer is waiting, watching her every move, and he won't stop until he's exacted his revenge and reclaims his rights to raise his daughter.

A Flying Affair ~ Review

A Flying Affair
By Carla Stewart

Mittie Humphreys has a passion for excitement and exhilaration, unfortunately her mother doesn't think her chosen way of expressing it is proper.  Just wait until she hears about Mittie's newest passion - flying.

It's 1927 and women flying is just starting to be recognized, though many still scoff at the idea of women with their delicate natures and constitutions being able to handle such a machine.  But Mittie has never let the opinion of others dissuade her when she sets her mind to something.  And her father is her secret champion when he doesn't attempt to crush her dreams and even introduces her to Bobby York, a young man who has similar interests - horses and flying.

Bobby may be perfect but Ames Dewberry fascinates Mittie with his daredevil flying and his cavalier ways.  Having first introduced Mittie to the freedom of flight, Ames has a special place in her thoughts.  Could one of these two very different men capture a heart which she thinks uncapturable?

Join Mittie as she joins the earliest ranks of women to take to the skies during the later years of the Roaring Twenties a time of change in all areas of the American life and the role of women.

If you like post WWI historical fiction give this book a spin.  It is interesting to see many of the things we take for granted today not the norm for everyday living in 1927.  Planes, cars, phones, etc are just coming into their own and slowly making a change to life as people knew whether or not they wanted this change to come.

I was provided a copy of this book through TBCN/BookFun in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

Ever since Mittie Humphreys agreed to join dashing barnstorming pilot Ames for a joyride in his airplane, her lifelong love of horses has been surpassed by one thing--a longing for the skies. It seems she's not the only one--with Charles Lindbergh making his victory tour in the Spirit of St. Louis, aviation fever is spreading across the country. Mittie knows flying is the perfect focus for the soaring ambition and taste for adventure within her, and whenever she can slip away from her duties on her family's prosperous Kentucky horse farm, she heads to the airfield.

Considering their shared passion, it's no surprise that Ames begins to vie for Mittie's time. But when handsome British aviator Bobby York offers her flying lessons, he is equally surprised-and beguiled-by Mittie's grit and talent. Driven to succeed, Mittie will do whatever it takes to compete in the Women's National Air Derby alongside Amelia Earhart. But when Calista "Peach" Gilson, a charming Southern belle, becomes her rival both professionally and in love, Mittie must learn how to navigate her heart's romantic longings as well as the skies.

But when disaster hits the inn, Asa retreats into despair and Nell is forced to return to her family's mine. Asa faces the hard fact: He'll never be the man Nell deserves. But he is too late.  Rachel is promised to another, though she is drawn to David even before she knows that this is the man to whom she has been corresponding for more than a year.  When David is offered a teaching position at the school across from her home Rachel's heart is thrown into turmoil.

Determined to make the most of the summer that they have, Peter and Casey steal away to do some exploring.  What follows was an adventure that they never expected.  An adventure that will take them through space and time.

This middle grade adventure will delight boys who are looking for something good to read.  Parents and grandparents will take comfort in the clean reading that this book offers, while kids will enjoy the adventure.  Think Journey to the Center of the Earth but better.

I was provided a copy of this book by TBCN/BookFun in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
PETER BAKER has a dream of being the youngest boy scientist by producing his own documentary show called Dinosaur Planet (and getting famous). Which shouldn't be hard because his parents are dinosaur hunters, and he's been working on dinosaur digs ever since he can remember.

But his plans get ruined when his father takes a job at a museum and his mother leaves for Africa. Now, he will not get to work on a dinosaur dig this summer, and must keep an eye on his younger sister every day, too.

Then he meets Casey Tucker, and his zoologist aunt. Here is a boy whose responsibility is to entertain a monkey from NASA (vacationing at the zoo) for several hours a day. But Casey's secret mission is to search for a legendary scientist that went missing years before, while working on a classified space project. At first, it's only fun and games. But it isn't long before the friends discover...

How dangerous some games really are.

About the Author:

Cousin Summers (the Mysterious) has lived up in a lighthouse on Summers Island for longer than anyone can remember. But it doesn't matter that no one remembers when the stories started. The important thing is the lighthouse is where they all come from. You might be wondering where the mysterious part comes in. It is because Cousin Summers is a shy person (and busy, too), who spends so much time writing stories up in the lighthouse that a lot of rumors have started. Which is all we need to say about that, because we know where rumors come from. Sometimes there's a little truth to them, too. Either way, you will have to decide for yourself. What is known for certain is that Cousin Summers (the Mysterious) does not mind sharing the island with readers who find their way there. Oh, yes, and you will occasionally see Miss Lilly there (the light housekeeper who only does light housework). She can answer questions you might have about Cousin Summers, but you have to be polite. Then there's the Captain, who has lived long enough to know something about everything. He talks to anyone who will listen, regardless of whether they are polite or not. There are others on the island, too. But that's enough for now.

The Mountain Midwife ~ Review

The Mountain Midwife
By Laurie Alice Eakes

Ashley Tolliver is the local midwife, as have generations of Tolliver women.  But she has dreams of taking her skills and training to the next level with medical school.  But if she leaves who will care for those she leaves behind?

Hunter McDermott thought he knew who he was, until he received a message in his voicemail.  An unknown caller claims to be his mother and she needs his help.  Suddenly his life as he knew it is in chaos and he is determined to track down the truth.  But to find out the truth he needs to find the midwife how delivered him over 30 years ago.

But what he finds is Ashley Tolliver a young woman too young to be who he is searching for. Ashley is on her own search - a young woman, in desperate need of medical attention, has disappeared along with her newborn.  Finding this young woman soon is imperative.

But the Appalachians are a dangerous region to venture if you don't know what you are heading into. And neither Ashley nor Hunter fully know just what they are getting themselves into.  And venturing into the unknown can be deadly.

It is interesting to compare this book with Laurie's previous books about midwives and how the occupation changed over the generations and yet didn't change.  There are some many today who are turning to midwives rather than doctors and yet it wasn't that long ago that midwives were the only option.

This is an intriguing book that will be sure to keep you reading and be prepared for some twists that will keep you guessing as to the ultimate outcome.  I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone in search of a well-written story.

I was provided a copy of this book by the Fiction Guild in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
For nearly two hundred years, women in Ashley Tolliver’s family have practiced the art of midwifery in their mountain community. Now she wants to take her skills a step further, but attending medical school means abandoning those women to whom she has dedicated her life, the mountains she loves, and the awakening of her heart.
Ashley Tolliver has tended to the women of her small Appalachian community for years. As their midwife, she thinks she has seen it all. Until a young woman gives birth to a baby at Ashley’s home and is abducted just as she tries to take the dangerously bleeding woman her to the nearest hospital. Now Ashley is on a mission to find the woman and her newborn baby . . . before it’s too late.
Hunter McDermott is on a quest—to track down his birth mother. After receiving more media attention than he could ever want for being in the right place at the right time, he receives a mysterious phone call from a woman claiming to be his mother. Hunter seeks out the aid of the local midwife in the mountain town where the phone call originated—surely she can shed some light on his own family background.
Ashley isn’t prepared for the way Hunter’s entrance into her world affects her heart and her future. He reignites dreams of her own family she has long put aside in favor earning her medical degree and being able to do even more for her community. But is it commitment to her calling or fear of the unknown that keeps her feet firmly planted in the Appalachian soil? Or is it something more—fear of her growing feelings for Hunter—that make her hesitant to explore the world beyond the mountains?

Fire and Ice
Wild at Heart #3
By Mary Connealy

The Wilde sisters are back but Shannon and Kylie are soon to depart for their new lives with their respective husbands.  Bailey is about to be on her own, confined to her lonely out of the way homestead through the long winter months.

Unfortunately Gage Coulter has discovered that Bailey is a Miss just like her sisters.  And even more unfortunate is Gage's immediate need of a wife.  And Bailey is the only woman he thinks can handle the pending disaster coming to his ranch straight from Texas!

For the right deal Bailey just may agree to Gage's proposal, but not without her own provisions added.  Which will come first?  Love or death?

This is a book that fans of Mary Connealy will enjoy.  Historical fiction with romance that isn't deep reading.  I'd say this is diversionary reading that will leave some readers laughing while others will be rolling their eyes.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher through TBCN/BookFun in exchange for my honest review.

The Forgotten Recipe ~ Review

The Forgotten Recipe
An Amish Heirloom Novel #1
By Amy Clipston

When Seth died her future died with him.  Jason only wanted to offer Veronica his sympathy.  He was with Seth when he died and he knew how important Veronica was to his best friend.  But when he came face-to-face with her he couldn't say a word.

A long forgotten recipe has given Veronica something she thought she had forever lost. But her Mammi's raspberry pies have given her a purpose.  And she has attracted a regular customer in Jason Huyard.

He only meant to share in the sorrow that Seth's death caused, but instead he lost his heart.  Can he ever hope to win to Veronica's heart?  Or did Veronica bury her heart with the man she loved?

A delightful book about second chances.  My only complaint with The Forgotten Recipe is I would have liked a glimpse at this recipe that so enchanted all who tasted it.  This is the first book in a series and I hope the hope chest and the maybe mystery surrounding it is further explored in future books.

I was provided a copy of this book by the Fiction Guild in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
After losing her fiancé in a tragic accident,
Veronica Fisher finds solace in the old recipes
stored in her mother’s hope chest—and in a
special visitor who comes to her bake stand to
purchase her old fashioned raspberry pies.

Veronica Fisher is devastated when her fiancé, Seth, is killed in an accident at work. Seth’s friend, Jason Huyard, was with him and blames himself for Seth’s death. Although Jason has never met Veronica, he feels as if he knows her because Seth talked about her constantly. After the accident, he can’t seem to get Veronica out of his mind.
Two months later, Veronica is cleaning the attic and comes across her mother’s old hope chest. She finds an old recipe and soon discovers that baking helps her cope with her grief, so she opens a bake stand to sell her pies.
Jason starts visiting the stand weekly and their friendship grows, but Veronica isn’t ready to court again. And Jason harbors his secret regret of not being able to save Seth.
Veronica’s mother must convince her that she can’t completely give up on love. But when the truth is revealed, can she forgive Jason for not telling her he was there on that fateful day?

A Refuge at Highland Hall ~ Review

A Refuge at Highland Hall
Edwardian Brides #3
By Carrie Turansky

Penny Ramsey is all grown up and the world is at war.  Her dreams of romance and marriage have been put on hold as she assists her older sister Kate in her efforts to offer a home to some of London's orphaned children.

Penny has been disappointed in matters of the heart before and the uncertainties of war have taken precedence in her mind.  That is until she meets Alex Goodwin a young man training with the Royal Naval Air Service.  But pilots fighting against Germany aren't known for their lengthy service due to the extreme risks involved.  But the heart does't heed the warnings of the mind.

England of 1915 was an island under attack.  Zeppelins have made their way to London and Highland Hall is to become their refuge for the foreseeable future.

But even Highland Hall has been touched by the war.  German prisoners are being held nearby. Many of the men have gone joining the efforts to fight Germany.  Can the place they once called home provide the healing and safety they all require?

I find it interesting how in times of war a group of people is looked upon with distrust because of their ancestry.  In this case many of those who were of German descent were detained and housed as prisoners.  Though many of these men were only guilty of having German blood they were ripped away from their families, their lives treated as if they were conspiring against the land they called home.

Fear is a powerful enemy.  It causes us to see something that isn't there.  It makes us fear rejection.  It causes us to lose faith and hope.  A Refuge at Highland Hall is a journey to finding the hope that has been hidden by the fear of war.

This is a delightful series that you should read in entirety though one can most certainly read each book as a standalone.  It is nice to get to know Penny better with this third book.  Historical fiction fans will enjoy this book.

I was provided a copy this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
The Great War shakes the world of a spirited young woman and the brave British pilot she loves, taking her from London to her family’s magnificent country estate, and sending him into the war-torn skies over France.

Click here to download chapter one of  A Refuge at Highland Hall

Penny Ramsey has always considered Highland Hall her home, but when Britain becomes involved in World War One she travels to London to assist her sister Kate with the eight orphan children she and her husband Jon have taken into their home. Doing her part for the war effort takes priority over Penny’s dreams of romance until she meets Alex Goodwin, a Royal Naval Air Service pilot in training.

Alex is determined to prove his worth and do his part to defend his country. Knowing he is heading off for the dangerous assignment of  chasing Zeppelins across the front line in France, he feels it’s unwise to form any romantic attachments. But he can’t help admiring the pretty, warmhearted Penny and wondering what it would be like to find her waiting when he returns home from the war.

As Penny writes to Alex, their friendship blossoms, and she becomes his tie to home and normalcy as he faces the hardships war. But being an RNAS pilot means confronting the enemy, and the fallout form those experiences push Alex beyond Penny’s reach. Can God mend the brokenness left by the losses of war? Will faith and forgiveness bring them together again?

Whispers in the Reading Room ~ Review

Whispers in the Reading Room
A Chicago World's Fair Mystery #3
By Shelley Gray

Lydia Bancroft loves books and her job in the library is a pure pleasure.  And her favorite patron never checks-out a book, he doesn't have a library card, and Lydia doesn't know his name. He's a perfect gentleman and makes frequent use of the Reading Room and the books.  Who is this person who seemingly loves books as much as her?

Sebastian Marks is not who Lydia thinks him to be.  His mysterious nature is a cloak to hide his past - a past that he has left behind.  A man to be feared if Chicago gossip is to be believed.  But there is a part of him that wants to be something more than what he is and Lydia intrigues him.

When given the opportunity to offer Lydia a service - rescuing her from a most unpleasant situation - the two form a most unusual friendship.  And this friendship will leave a lasting impact on not only Lydia and Sebastian but on those closest to them.

But danger is lurking the streets of Chicago and in the less affluent areas murders are becoming more numerous.  Unfortunately for Lydia her name is linked to the latest one - her reputation is damaged, an advantageous marriage seems unlikely, and her mother is horrified.  What's a young woman with limited means to do?  Lydia is about to embark on the experience of a lifetime.

Are you ready to enter the Reading Room and take a step back in time?

This is the first time I've read any of Shelley Gray's books and I have to admit I'm intrigued with the conclusion of this series so I now have to go back a step further in time and acquaint myself with the first two books in the series, which I'm pleased to say I can pick-up in my own library - though I will check them out.  Unlike Sebastian I do have a library card.

I was provided a copy of this book by the Fiction Guild in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

Lydia’s job at the library is her world—until a mysterious patron catches her eye . . . and perhaps her heart.
Just months after the closure of the Chicago World’s Fair, librarian Lydia Bancroft finds herself fascinated by a mysterious dark-haired and dark-eyed patron. He has never given her his name; he actually never speaks to a single person. All she knows about him is that he loves books as much as she does.

The Bronte Plot ~ Review

The Brontë Plot
By Katherine Reay

Lucy Alling loves a good story and she loves to tell one on occasion.  Combined this makes her perfect for her preferred career - a seller and procurer of rare books in a Chicago shop.  But Lucy is hiding a secret - a secret that may change everything for her and not necessarily for the better.

Lucy and Helen are both burdened by the choices that they have made.  And prompted by current circumstances they set out on a journey that will bring healing by reopening old wounds.

Kathleen Reay has a talent for bringing the truths from classic favorites into our world.  The road not traveled is often just as important as the one we chose.  The question we must ask ourselves is why did we chose the path we did?  What was our motivation?

If you are looking for a story that can just take you away for awhile this one can do it.  But be forewarned you may be tempted by that all too common trap of Just one more chapter.  This book is worth the sleep deprivation though.

The First Hostage ~ Review

The First Hostage
A J.B. Collins novel #2
By Joel C. Rosenberg

Everything suddenly went wrong - the peace summit in Amman, Jordan, has been the target of a devastating attack that claimed the lives of many high ranking officials from both the region and the United States.  Even more troubling the president of the United States is missing and presumed a high value hostage of ISIS!

And New York Times journalist J.B. Collins finds himself on the front-lines of this deadly attack.  But the potential destabilization of the region is but one possible outcome.  Throw in a hostage situation with the American president at the mercy of ISIS and the whole world could become destabilized.

Time is in short supply as ISIS makes its demands.  But before any action can be taken a traitor must be found and dealt with. And the evidence takes an unexpected turn.

This is a fast-paced book that will keep the reader in suspense as to the outcome.  How does one find a hostage when the perpetrators have such vast resources and means at their disposal?  This is a book that will appeal to many as it is a contemporary setting.  ISIS is a daily news story and this book looks at a what-if scenario that is not unbelievable.

This is the second J.B. Collins novel, but reading the first book The Third Target is not necessary to following this story.  This is in fact the first book by Joel C. Rosenberg that I have ever read and I had no problem with following the story.  Though I will admit I did order a copy of the first book (last night) as I enjoyed both this book and the writing of Mr. Rosenberg.

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

“The president of the United States . . .
                                                                                      is missing.”

With these words, New York Times journalist J. B. Collins, reporting from the scene of a devastating attack by ISIS terrorists in Amman, Jordan, puts the entire world on high alert. The leaders of Israel and Palestine are critically injured, Jordan’s king is fighting for his life, and the U.S. president is missing and presumed captured.

As the U.S. government faces a constitutional crisis and Jordan battles for its very existence, Collins must do his best to keep the world informed while working to convince the FBI that his stories are not responsible for the terror attack on the Jordanian capital. And ISIS still has chemical weapons . . .

Struggling to clear his name, Collins and the Secret Service try frantically to locate and rescue the leader of the free world before ISIS’s threats become a catastrophic reality.

War for the Waking World ~ Review

War for the Waking World
Dreamtreaders #3
By Wayne Thomas Batson

A Dream Come True...
Can Be a Real Nightmare

Archer Keaton has been a Dreamtreader for several years and on occasion been known to work around the rules to get the job done.  But his past is about to catch up to him at the worst possible time - the Rift has torn through into the Waking World and reality and the dream have mixed together.  But can Archer and his fellow Dreamtreaders repair the damage before it becomes irreversible?

Archer, Kaylie, and Nick are about to engage in a war for the waking world and time is running out. With some unexpected allies they just may have a chance to reverse the Rift, but there is a cost to just such an undertaking but the survival of the world depends on them.

The War for the Waking World is the concluding book in the Dreamtreaders series and it is an adventure packed book that will keep you guessing at the ultimate outcome until the very end. This is a series that you must read in order to 1) follow the series and 2) to truly know who the various characters are.  This book is targeted to the juvenile audience but fans of fantasy will appreciate this story and its complexity.

I would recommend both the book and the series for ages 12 and up (or younger readers who are advanced readers).  Perfect if you're looking for a book to occupy the kids when they get bored with our wacky winter weather.  Would also be a great family read-aloud book for some good quality family time.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher through the BookLook blogger program in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:

Would you be willing to fight for your dreams?
Fifteen-year-old Archer Keaton has the ability to enter and explore his dreams. He is a Dreamtreader, one of three selected from each generation. Their mission: to protect the waking world from the Nightmare Lord who dwells beyond the Slumber Gate. But as Archer’s dreams become more dangerous and threatening, so too does his waking life.

Now it’s up to Archer and his fellow Dreamtreaders to race to reverse the rift before too much damage is done and to battle Archer’s ex-best friend, Kara, who sits on the throne of the Nightmare Lord. What follows is a delightful twist on a well-known fairy tale that takes place during Melanie Dickerson's previous book The Princess Spy, but this time the focus is on some of the background characters from the castle and on Rapunzel, Gerek, and Gothel.  We also learn about the tragedy that Duke Wilhelm and Lady Rose experienced over 15 years.
Melanie Dickerson will draw you into this medieval world she has created with the first word set to page.  Though most of her books deal with Duke Wilhelm and his family if you have not read any of her books before don't worry about pick up The Golden Braid first as you can easily follow the story and get caught up at a later date with the other books.
This is truly a lovely book one that you'll want to read again and again.  I would recommend this book to most readers 13 and up.  Younger readers with greater reading skills and comprehension who aren't scared off by the 300 page length would also enjoy this book. I know I would have devoured a book like this when I was 9.  This book would make a perfect gift or library addition.
I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher Thomas Nelson is exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
The one who needs rescuing isn’t always the one in the tower.
Rapunzel can throw a knife better than any man around. And her skills as an artist rival those of any artist she’s met. But for a woman in medieval times, the one skill she most desires is the hardest one to obtain: the ability to read.

This knight, Sir Gerek, agrees to educate Rapunzel in order to pay back his debt. She just has to put up with his arrogant nature and single-minded focus on riches and prestige.
But this Rapunzel story is unlike any other and the mystery that she uncovers will change everything—except her happily ever after.

Streams of Mercy ~ Review

Streams of Mercy
Song of Blessing #3
By Lauraine Snelling

Blessing, North Dakota, is recovering and rebuilding from the tragedy that struck the town in book 2 (A Harvest of Hope) which I somehow managed to miss leaving me a little bit in the dark.  I highly recommend read the series in order.  But the town is prospering, the hospital is still training intern doctors and nurses from Chicago.  Life for the most part is good.

Anji Moen and her children are living with her sister Rebecca and brother-in-law Gerald.  She is sharing the knowledge that she gained from her late husband by teaching Norwegian history in the high school.  Her growing friendship with Thomas Devlin has become an added blessing in her life. Thomas is an Anglican minister from Ireland who has called Blessing home for a short time. Thomas's heart is drawn to the ministry but in recent years he has been without a church, instead he has been putting his carpentry skills to use in Blessing both as a carpenter and as a teacher.

But Blessing is about to undergo yet another time of testing when some unexpected "visitors" arrive in the night.  The skills of doctors Astrid and Elizabeth Bjorklund will be tested as they fight against an unknown and deadly illness that threatens Blessing.

Taking place in 1907 when medicine and modern living as we know it were in the early stages of becoming a reality for all, Blessing is on the forefront of this growth.  But no matter the time one lives in tragedy is a fact of life.  Blessing is a town that one could definitely find a home for ones heart.  The caring that the residents share for one another is heartening and often sadly missing from much of life as we experience it today.

Often people refer to living a simpler life, but life isn't simpler rather it is less encumbered by the pressures and demands that we have allowed to gain such a foothold in our lives today.

I really enjoyed Streams of Mercy and look forward to hopefully further installment from Blessing. In the meantime I'm going to backtrack and read what I missed in book 2.  This series is highly recommended to those who enjoy historical fiction.  Would make an excellent gift or addition to any local library.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
The Heartwarming Drama Continues in the Song of Blessing Series
Anji Baard Moen, a recent widow, returns from Norway with her children. She quickly settles back into life in Blessing, teaching Norwegian history in the high school and writing articles for the Blessing Gazette. When tragedy strikes, Anji steps in to run the newspaper and soon finds a kindred spirit in the widower who owns the printing press. As they spend time together, Anji wonders if there's something more than friendship growing between them.

But Anji has also caught the eye of a recent arrival to Blessing. He has put his carpentry skills to good use on the town's building projects, including Anji's house. But Anji is torn between her feelings of loyalty to someone who needs her and the chance to build a new life with this intriguing newcomer.

Where will her choice take her?

Chivalrous ~ Review

Chivalrous
Valiant Hearts #2
By Dina Sleiman

Gwendolyn Barnes hopes to someday earn her father's love.  She scorns the duties of being a lady, longing to instead to be a knight like her brothers.  But seeking to right the wrongs is not in her future, rather an arranged marriage of her father's choosing is her fate.  And her father is sure to choose someone like himself - domineering, cruel, and unloving.

Allen of Ellsworth has left Lady Merry and the Ghosts behind seeking to find a new cause to fight for and woman to whom he could offer his heart.  A tournament for knights in Edendale offers Allen a chance to prove not only his skill as a knight but also the honor of his heart.  Allen's selfless act while in the tournament brings him to the attention of not only Gwendolyn but also that of Duke Justus.

But when treachery finds its way into Edendale the new path that Allen's life has taken takes an unexpected turn.  And this turn could leave his heart again bruised.  But Allen is determined to do his duty for his new home, even if it means denying his heart's desire.  But can he allow Gwendolyn to remain in her father's control if he can prevent it?

Gwendolyn is determined to not be crush in spirit by her father's decisions.  But she is hopeful that her mother and perhaps the Duchess can sway him in another direction.  But as far as her father is concerned his only daughter has little value except as a marriage pawn to get him greater power and influence.

Can Gwendolyn and Allen see the path that God has set before them or will they instead follow the path set before them by men?  The fate of their hearts and a people may rest on what they do.

This is the second book in the Valiant Hearts series and is as good if not better than the first book Valiant. This book / series should appeal to YA readers who are looking for clean fiction.  This is an enjoyable book that captures the reader's attention from beginning to end.  Though one doesn't have to read the first book to enjoy this book it is recommended so that one can fully appreciate Allen and where he is coming from.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher Bethany House in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book:
Strong and adventurous Gwendolyn Barnes longs to be a knight like her chivalrous brothers. However, that is not an option for her, not even in the Arthurian-inspired Eden where she dwells. Her parents view her only as a marriage pawn, and her domineering father is determined to see her wed to a brutish man who will break her spirit.

When handsome, good-hearted Allen of Ellsworth arrives in Edendale searching for his place in the world, Gwendolyn spies in him the sort of fellow she could imagine marrying. Yet fate seems determined to keep them apart. Tournaments, intrigue, and battles--along with twists and turns aplenty--await these two as they struggle to find love, identity, and their true destinies.
