Author Q&A with Bonnie Leon ~ Interview

Today Blooming with Books is hosting Bonnie Leon author of One Hundred Valleys.

1) If you had to pick another format for your books to be shared what would it be -
musical, movie, public readings, serial release(a chapter at a time), graphic
novel?

I would choose movies. I love movies, all sorts of genres, except horror. Often
times while watching a well-done movie I pay close attention to how a scene is
set up, how characters communicate through body language, and how tension
builds through a scene. There is a lot to learn from a good movie. Plus settling
down in my comfiest clothes with a blanket and possibly a bowl of popcorn, then
allowing myself to be caught up in the story playing on the screen is always fun.
Still, I prefer novels, but occasionally a movie is better than “the book”.

2) What one author past or present would you like to mentor you?

John Steinbeck is at the top of my list. Many of his stories are dark and tend to look at
the underbelly of humanity, but I love the depth of his writing. It often feels melodic to
me, like a composition by Beethoven or Bach. It’s not unusual for me to read and reread
a portion of his work to get a better grasp of how he created the emotion and intensity of
a scene. He could take the simplest thing, like a fly, and use it to create tension. In my
mind, he was a writing genius.

3)  What one book would you recommend that everyone read?

Hinds Feet On High Places is the first book that comes to mind. It is an allegory, something I’ve never written, and it has been many years since I read the book, but I can still feel the power and impact of the story. Through the years, I’ve purchased many copies and have given them to people I thought could use the blessing of the truths it contains. I’ve lost count of how many.

It is a book with the capacity to change lives.

Oh, I love that book and its sequel Mountains of Spice. You are right this is an excellent book and for me to it has been several years since I've last read it.

4)  Do you have a favorite author that you would recommend?

Choosing only one favorite author is so difficult. There are many wonderful, creative and gifted writers. This is an agonizing decision.

If I must choose only one, it would have to be Lynn Austen. She creates entertaining
and heartfelt historical novels. Once I begin reading I cannot walk away from the book.
She always hooks me from the very beginning and the story is never a disappointment.
Ms. Austen packs a great deal of historical detail into her books and manages to do so
without intruding on the story. I always come away from one of her books not only
inspired but better educated.

5) What one question do you wish you would be asked and how would you answer it?
“Is being a writer a gift or a curse?”

It is definitely a gift, but I cannot deny that sometimes it can feel like a curse.
I am thankful for the gift of writing, which was given to by God when I most needed
something in my life that required creativity, dedication and purpose. And I am forever
grateful for His mercy and provision.

Through the years, because of writing, I’ve met some of the most interesting people.
Writers and others in the industry are truly fascinating. They are thoughtful, sometimes
quirky, and always intelligent. Many have kindness at their core and some have become
dear friends. My readers have been a huge source of blessing to me and because of
the magic of social networking, I hear from them often. They write to tell me they are
praying for me. Or they want to share a part of their life with me. Sometimes, something
I’ve written has touched their life in a special way and they just want me to know.
Hearing from them is always an encouragement.

There is a special beauty in being a writer. Crafting a novel is hard work and requires
hundreds of hours. Even so, creating characters and their story fulfills something deep
in my spirit that is more satisfying than most everything else in my life. I think it must be
very much like the work of an artist who creates a painting or a sculpture or a piece of
music. Crafting what we hope is a thing of beauty is our joy.

Well, thank you, Bonnie, for taking the time today to visit and share with us.

Midnight's Curse
Beyond the Tales #2
By Tricia Mingerink

High King Alexander has awoken from his 100 years of sleep to a nation divided - the Seven Kingdoms of Tallahatchia are on the edge of yet another war and not sure that they want to be ruled once again by a High King.

Over the years Daemyn Rand has served the High King and with the curse broken finds himself still serving Alex. But his life is different now as he has found love in the Princess Rosanna the princess who broke the curse placed upon the High King. But the past still has its hand on him and the thought of living a normal life and aging with those around him is unfamiliar to him.

Elara Ashen spends her days bemoaning her existence as a maidservant in the home of Baroness Hackett. Elara wants the life that Monica and Beatrice Hackett have - a life of position, of silk gowns, balls, and wealth. And when the King Cassius of Pohatomie invites the High King of Tallahatchia to the Harvest Festival and all the noble persons of the kingdom are invited Elara's wish to attend seems the least possible thing in the world. At least, until a chance encounter with the loveliest Fae she could ever imagine offers her heart's desire. All she needs to do is accept the offered gift of a pair of glass slippers which will make her the envy of every woman and the desire of every man's heart, including the High King's!

But when Elara's dream takes a most unexpected turn she is forced to see just where her jealousy and discontent has lead her - straight into a mess that she doesn't want to be in. And worse she just may destroy all hopes of a reunited Tallahatchia unless she can find a way to stop the curse she now finds herself under.

This is a lovely sequel to Dagger's Sleep as it continues the story that was first presented there (the awakening of the High King). I really like how we see how both Daemyn and Alex are struggling with learning to accept how their lives are now Alex to a kingdom in disarray that has little use for what was and Daemyn who is no longer on a quest to find a princess to break the curse. If you like a twist on the traditional fairy tale this one will most certainly give you that - this is one Cinderella tale that you will want to read again and again.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
The glass slippers might be her dreams come true...or her worst nightmare.

High King Alexander rules the Seven Kingdoms of Tallahatchia—a divided nation on the brink
of yet another war. When an invitation arrives from the king of Pohatomie, Alex knows it must
be a trap, but could it also be his opportunity to unite the kingdoms?

Daemyn Rand has lived a hundred years, served an arrogant prince, fallen in love with a
princess, and lost himself somewhere along the way. He has already died for his loyalty. Will
standing at the high king’s side cost him his last chance to truly live?

Elara Ashen is a lowly, miserable servant. All she wants is to spend even one night in a fancy
dress dancing with the high king. When she is offered a pair of glass slippers, it seems that all
her dreams have come true.

But dreams have a price, and gifts can be curses in disguise. What will it cost to stop this curse
from tearing Tallahatchia apart yet again?

Fairy tales meet the Appalachian Mountains in this adventurous fantasy retelling of the classic
Cinderella story.

Author Interview:
1)  Who (or) what is your favorite comfort read author or genre?
Light and humorous fairy tale retellings. They have always been my go-to comfort read from the time I was little. K.M. Shea, J.M. Stengl, Melanie Cellier are my favorites. K.M. Shea especially has a lot of retellings out there, and her writing is so hysterically funny all the time. I wish I could write as funny as she does.

2)  What one author past or present would you like to mentor you?

C.S. Lewis. He was seriously brilliant when it came to writing an allegorical story. The Chronicles of Narnia are so well written I get something new out of them every time I read them (and I re-read them at least once a year). I don't know how it is possible to pack so much into the books and still have the allegorical elements feel so natural and integral to the story.

3)  How do you develop your setting (a photo, a trip, a random comment)?

Many of my settings are based on places I have actually been. Since I have never traveled outside of the United States yet, that means they are based on settings in the United States. It's a good thing we have such a variety of geography, lol. I write about waterfalls I have actually visited, trails I have walked, places my family got lost in, because it helps me bring the settings more alive on the page.

4)  Do you have a favorite author that you would recommend?

A favorite author? Sorry, I can't pick just one, lol. For Christian fantasy: Jaye L. Knight, Morgan Huneke, Nadine Brandes, Jill Williamson, Morgan Busse. For fairy tale retellings, K.M. Shea, J.M. Stengl, Melanie Cellier, W.R. Gingell, Lucy Tempest, and many more are my favorites. I can come up with a mile-long list if you'd like, lol.

I totally agree - whenever anyone asks for my favorite author I can never pick just one - Nope not possible. I love that some of the authors you named are on my list of favorites too - must be why I love your books we have similar tastes in reading!

5)  Who is your favorite character (or two) in Midnight's Curse

I love writing Alex, lol. He can be so annoyingly flawed at times but also so fun to write. It's a good thing I like writing about him since I have two more books with him as a main character. And also, Daemyn. Because Daemyn is awesome.

6)  Midnight's Curse and the Dagger's Sleep, do you need to read one to read the other? Do you have a favorite? Why or why not?

It would certainly help to read Dagger's Sleep before Midnight's Curse because Midnight's Curse is a continuation with many of the same characters as the first book. But I did try to write Midnight's Curse so that you could jump straight into it if a Cinderella retelling sounded more appealing than a Sleeping Beauty retelling. You might be mildly confused at the beginning, but it shouldn't be impossibly confusing, if that makes sense.

Refuge at Pine Lake ~ Review with Interview

Refuge at Pine Lake
A Pine Haven Novel
By Rose Chandler Johnson

Robin Lancaster has had a crush on Caleb Jackson for years and he never noticed her - until last year. But the romance that promised to be something more fizzled as fall moved in and Robin left Pine Lake behind. But this summer she's determined to once again catch Caleb's attention and wrangle a marriage proposal out of him. There is just one complication to her plans - her mother rented out their lake home to a perfect stranger.

Ughhh - whats a girl to do with her future happiness on the line? Robin decides to do a little creative strategizing - first off convince Matthew McLaughlin that she is part of the lake house deal - she'll do the cooking and take up residence in the small apartment off the house.

Matt just wants to be left along - living in the guilt that has consumed him the last few years following his wife's death. But thanks to the intervention of his best friend he finds himself leaving California behind for Georgia and Pine Lake. With his grumbly personality, he is less than happy to discover a young woman with a bubbly personality living there.

Refuge at Pine Lake is an enjoyable read as Robin, Matt, and Caleb are caught up in a unique situation. Can Robin's high school dreams come true? Or is there something better for her that she'll lose with her own machinations. This is a contemporary romance that those looking for a clean read will enjoy (word of warning there is a fair bit of kissing so if you aren't a fan you are forewarned).

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Series: Pine Haven
Genre:  Christian, Contemporary
Publisher: Chanson Books
Publication date: March 7, 2019
Robin Lancaster, a twenty-six-year-old former kindergarten teacher, has her summer and her life all figured out. She’s ready to be on her own, writing and illustrating her children’s stories at her family’s beloved lake house. Once there, she intends to rekindle a romance with Caleb Jackson, the area’s top hunting and fishing guide, and bag him for herself.
Complications arise from the start when Robin finds out her mother has rented the lake house to a man they know nothing about.
Matthew McLaughlin, forty-year-old widowed university professor and author from California, shows up at Pine Lake in crisis. A sabbatical might be his only hope to save much more than his career. He needs a place of refuge. Sharing the lake house with a lighthearted young woman and her dog is the last thing on his mind.
Caleb Jackson has his own plans. He’s used to things going his way, but a man staying in Robin’s house presents unforeseen challenges. When paths unavoidably entangle for these three, hearts are on the line.

Author Interview:
What do you love about this new story?
There’s so much to love--the intriguing storyline which involves an unlikely love-triangle, and the characters who make the story come to life. Any one of the characters could be someone you know. All of them have real struggles and goals, strengths and weaknesses, and the reader sees them dealing with life and growing in the process. With my Georgia roots and love of nature, I also love the natural setting by the lake and the quirky small town.
How do you develop your setting (a photo, a trip, a random comment)?
So far, my settings have developed from my own life and travels. Setting plays a principal role. Pine Lake is a place of refuge for Matthew McLaughlin. And Robin wants to live there not only because it’s her favorite place to be, but also because the man she hopes to marry lives there. I modeled the lake house setting after one I know well, Lake Thurmond. Pine Haven, the fictional town, replicates so many small towns with lots of southern charm. Maybe that’s one reason the story seems so real.
Share one or two new things you learned while writing this book.
A vital component of our well-being is our connection with others. We need that connection in order to feel needed and valued. In an atmosphere of love, we’re free to be our best selves. The story highlights the complex dynamics of relationships and the lovely way God works on our behalf.
Of all the characters you’ve created in this novel, who would you like to have lunch with and why?
Robin’s neighbor, Mr. Charlie, is an octogenarian that really touched my heart. He has a rich lifetime of experiences and a quiet gentleness about him. He’d definitely want to fry fish and hushpuppies for me. Lunch with him would be a treasure.
What do you hope readers will tell others about this story?
You’ll be immersed in this authentic, true-to-life story with relatable characters. It’s refreshing and a pleasure to read. Read it!

10 Behind the Scenes Facts About the Book

  1.    I storyboard my novels the old-fashioned way adding cut-out pictures from magazines for all the characters. I envisioned the girl with strawberry hair as none other than Avril Lavigne.
  2.    I have fun creating Pinterest pages for my books.
  3.    My protagonists love to cook, as do I. There’s so much food prep in this story I have seriously considered a recipe book to follow.
  4.    I kitchen-tested Jenny’s favorite apple strudel muffins three times to perfect the recipe.
  5.    Characters’ names are important. For some reason, naming the dogs was the most challenging for me. The pets’ names changed multiple times during the writing process.
  6.    My sister Margaret wears only Shalimar perfume. It’s the signature fragrance of a character in the story also named Margaret. This little element in the story was totally unpremeditated.
  7.    YouTube was great for live-action research. Even though I used to waterski years ago, YouTube videos refreshed my memory.
  8.    For fishing advice, I relied on my youngest son and a friend who lives on Lake Thurmond.
  9.    Flora and fauna need to be accurate, even in fiction. My daughter insisted the golden eagle Matt sees had to be a bald eagle because those are the ones we see at Lake Thurmond.
  10.  Mr. Charlie is an endearing neighbor in the story. As it happens, my daddy and granddaddy were both named Charlie.

Author Interview:

If you had to pick another format for your books to be shared what would it be - musical, movie, public readings, serial release(a chapter at a time), graphic novel?

Preferably a made for TV movie on Hallmark or one of the coming of age Netflix movies. (Is it just me, or does their music sound like it’s from the 80s? Whatever. I dig it.) Basically, I’d be happy with anything that makes people say, “Ahhhh...” as they reach for the tissues. I’d want it to be the type of movie people watch again and again, and not just because it’s 3 AM and they’re bored but because they actually connected with the characters.

By the way, someone said that about one of my books once. Except I don’t believe the word they used was bored. I believe it was smashed. I should probably have been offended, but I wasn’t. B movies are my bread and butter, honey!

Do you have a favorite author that you would recommend?

I’m going to shine a little light on a friend of mine, Jo Ann Schneider. She’s still a fairly new writer, but she continues to challenge herself by writing in different genres. Her first two series are about magic, specials powers, and surviving the apocalypse. In her latest series, she delved into fairy tale retellings and created an entire Fairy Tale Academy where all her chapters interact. I’m completely in love with it. If you enjoy fairy tales, you’d love her novellas too.

Who is your favorite character (or two) in Golden Gown

I LOVE the leading man in Golden Gown, Gilberto De la Vega. He’s an homage to Rumplestiltskin and Gilbert Blythe from the Anne of Green Gables series, which is a favorite from my girlhood. Additionally, I lived in Argentina for a couple of years and fell in love with the Latin American people, so I made Gil a Spaniard. That gave him the ability to taunt my heroine, Elyse, in Spanish every time they share a scene in the novel.

There was just something really fun about creating a man out of all the things I love. He’s not the perfect man, but he is delightfully flawed. Mischievous, secretive, and flaunting a hero complex as wide as the Rock Mountains are some of his less savory characteristics. However, Gil is also loyal and kind when he wants to be. I kind of love that.

Becoming BeautyMidnight Sisters, or Golden Gown, do you need to read one to read the others? Do you have a favorite? Why or why not?

I always have a little overlap between stories and characters, but it’s not enough for you to need to read all my books to understand what’s going on. Isn’t it nice to know that if you see someone you love, like Jonas in Midnight Sisters, you can search out his first cameo in Becoming Beauty? Likewise, if you’re reading Golden Gown and you think, “Who’s this duke dude who’s related to Aunt Lydia?” you’ll want to read Midnight Sisters because the Duke of Trentwich’s storyline starts there.

I don’t really have a favorite novel. I kind of fall in love with whatever I’m working on at the moment. So I’m extra smitten with Gilberto De la Vega right now. As I continue to publish novels, I feel like I’m becoming a better storyteller and putting out better books.

That’s what I always tell new writers. You’re always a better writer today than you were yesterday. So put that manuscript you’ve spent years obsessing over away and start something new, honey!

What do you most like about this genre that you are writing in?

I am such a fairy tale junkie! Retellings are my favorite form, but I’ve loved reading the original fairy tales since I was a little girl. I don’t care if the characters are one dimensional, all the women are either helpless or ruthless, there’s always a slightly creepy moral at the end, and evil people get their eyes pecked out by birds. I’ve just always loved the magic of fairy tales.

Retellings are especially fun because you can take them in any direction you’d like. In my stories, rather than using magic, I set up scenes that would have appeared fantastical to the people not directly involved in them. Over time, that simple tale is passed along and becomes more and more grandiose. Eventually, fairy godmothers and talking cats are required to explain what happened long ago. In a similar way, rather than teaching a moral, I nestle a nugget of truth at the center and build the story around that. It’s my way of sharing who I am and what I value with the world.

Doomsayer ~ Review and Author Interview with Giveaway

Doomsayer
Conquests of Brokk #3
By Thane Keller

This is the third book in the Conquests of Brokk series, that being said after the first few chapters one can easily get into the story even without reading the two previous books. But you'll be so intrigued by this book you'll want to go back a read them later (speaking from experience here).

But now to the story, the Galactic Order is teetering on the edge. War is on the horizon - the Jark Empire's rogue commander Brokk attacked the Tassi and now turns his sights on his own world. But his war on Tassi has earned he and his people the hate of Cale. Cale's revenge will leave Jark in shambles just as Tassi was.

But war isn't the only threat to the Galactic Order as a coming collision with a neighboring galaxy looms ever nearer. What lies beyond is a question no one can answer. Is someone waiting to claim their space as their own? Will the merging of the galaxies forever alter what they've known? Only time will tell that is assuming anyone will survive.

This is a most interesting book and well worth reading. It is a clean read as far as SciFi goes - there are deaths as there is a war taking place this should not come as a surprise but the language and morals get an A+ in my estimation. The characters are not flat they have a dimension with facets that depending on the angle you view them at gives one varying insight into them.

If you like Star Wars you should like this offering from Thane Keller - it has a similar feel in how it plays out. Perfect reading for teens and up! And the ending let's just say it will leave you wanting more.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion ~ all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Brokk, Commander of the mighty Rogue Fleet, desires more than just his exile come to an end. His heart is set on revenge and his aim is to be the ruler of the Jark Empire. With his Armada resupplied and a powerful priestess at his side, Brokk intends to stop at nothing until his goals are achieved. Despite Brokk's plans, Cale has his own intentions for the Galaxy and his own desire for revenge. As conflict descends on the Jark Empire, a fog of war masks the plans of the remaining species in the Galaxy and a battle for positioning begins

Author Interview:
1) What genre do you most like reading?

~ I like reading science fiction the most, but as far as sub-genres I tend to read
space operas or technology-based thrillers. Anything that allows me to imagine
the fantastical with little care for present reality is fine by me! I also like a book
that keeps me moving. If the author lets me imagine the little details and keeps
the storyline pumping, I’m all in.

2) What one author past or present would you like to mentor you?

~ I would love to be mentored by Dean Koontz. There is a casualness in the way
that he writes and I appreciate the brief descriptions he gives in a setting that are
vivid and intense. Dean Koontz can tell a story with no more than three
characters and keep your interest throughout the novel. I love that about him.

3) How do develop your setting (a photo, a trip, a random comment)?

~ I’ve tried to give my reader a variety of unique settings that shaped the history
and evolution of the species they will encounter. In that sense, setting is almost
always developed by thinking through genetics first and struggle second. One
thing that I find fascinating about the science of our Earth is how fine-tuned it is to
life. But what if we find complex and sentient organisms on a planet that had
twice the gravity? What would they look like? How would their bodies form to
allow them to thrive on such a planet?

~ Another quality that captures my attention is how unbelievable space is and how
those qualities relate to space warfare. I try to build a space environment that is
harsh but still allows for a dynamic environment. In my Sci-Fi world, I want ships
hiding in nebulas and using stars and planets as terrain they can fight behind.

~ The final aspect of my settings are always emotional. Our emotions control how
we remember people and places far more than we ever realize. In Doomsayer
there is a scene where poor Sabik and his crew are being tortured and I describe
it as a fire that was always burning but never leaving him fully burned. It was all
consuming but never consumed him. It doesn’t end. Depression often feels that
way, doesn’t it? For me, these emotional settings are personal and I try to let
these emotions from periods in my past come out through my writing.

4) Do you have a favorite author that you would recommend?

~ Of course I love Dean Koontz but I already gushed on him enough. Recently, I’ve
really enjoyed reading James Maxwell and his book series “The Shifting Tides.”
The classics always capture my attention and books like “The Things They
Carried” and “Lord of the Flies” hold a special place in my heart because of the
psychological facet of the author’s writings.

5) What aspect did you most enjoy writing about in this series?

~ When I started this series, I wanted to write about space warfare, but the
character that stole my heart was Tamara and I loved writing about her from start
to finish. Tamara represents so many variables within the human experience: she
is a category, a stereotype, a victim, and a villain. She is desperate for
meaningful relationships but often develops a helpless love to those that abuse
her. She is idolized by followers and idolizes those in power. If Tamara was a
real person, the soldier in me would probably have fallen in love with her. Sadly,
the psychopath in her would likely find more joy in killing me than going to the
movies with me.

6) What one question do you wish you would be asked and how would you answer it?

~ Wow, what a hard question! If I have to choose just one, I wish someone would
ask me what relevancy this far out space conflict has on my job as a soldier. I
would tell them that the way we think about conflict, technology, and people must
continually be challenged. I would tell them that fiction can serve as an engine to
drive the way we think about the future and that the Army with the broadest
thinkers might be the Army that has the greatest ability to innovate and adapt.
