Amish Country Threats
Amish Country Threats
Amish Country Justice #10
By Dana R. Lynn

Lilah Schwartz's brother died saving her life and now someone is after her, and she has no idea who or why. Taking refuge with Levi Burkholder and his family wasn't her first choice but she has nowhere else to turn.

As a former soldier, Levi has the needed skills to keep Lilah safe. And with a determined killer after her, he'll need all his skill and some divine intervention to keep them alive long enough to learn who is after them and who killed Jacob.

Levi is dealing with the after-effects of his time in Afganistan, which adds another layer to who he is. His PTSD makes him think he isn't worthy of anyone. Lilah is dealing with her own guilt of being responsible for her brother's death and putting those around her in danger. As characters, they draw the reader into their story.

Amish Country Threats keeps the reader in suspense almost the entirety of the book. And as to the guilty party that is not given away and there are plenty of possible suspects until the climax. The story is well-paced with no periods of dragging, the story is continually in motion keeping the reader engaged. Overall a good story with an unexpected twist or two along the way.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Taking Notes on Murder ~ Review with Giveaway

Taking Notes on Murder
A Fiona Quinn Mystery #9
By C.S. McDonald
Narrated by Maren Swenson Waxenberg

Fiona Quinn has a secret she's been secretly married to Nathan Landry since they took a cruise that was anything but relaxing. But keeping her marriage a secret from her mother is starting to be a problem. Nancy Quinn is determined to see Fiona happily and blissfully wed sooner than later and she has just the solution - a wedding planner!

But Fiona has even bigger concerns - someone is leaving notes on her desk at school. And these anonymous notes hint at a suicide that may have been murder. There's just one little problem the notes offer no proof, no clues, nothing to go on. What's a kindergarten teacher to do? Well, first off find out the who and go from there.

And then there is grandma - she's starting to get a little more active and she is most definitely letting Fiona and Nathan know her opinion on the blending aspects of their home. Especially an heirloom lamp that comes with all the bells and whistles (literally all the bells and whistles).

Fiona is still totally Fiona and she has her work cut out for as she tries to find out just what happened in September 2005 and get Nathan involved as Detective Landry. But this cold case has more questions than answers and even more suspects, including,, once upon a time Fiona's mother Nancy. Was the death of this high school teacher suicide or murder? Only time will tell and the persistence of everybody's favorite sleuthing kindergarten teacher.

The narration by Maren Swenson Waxenberg is well presented. Each character has a unique voice so one can easily follow shifts in character voice. The pacing is good and at 5 hours a perfect length for commuting or a day of cleaning. I think Maren perfectly presents this book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Along a Storied Trail ~ Review

Along a Storied Trail
By Ann H. Gabhart

Tansy Calhoun doesn't know if love will ever come her way. The young man she had feels for broke her heart when he left the mountains behind. And marriage is longtime to reach forever, so if she waits a few more years she'll still have more than enough time to settle down and raise a family, even if there are only widowers looking for a woman of her years.

But at present Tansy has a purpose and she can't let those who depend on her down. She is the book lady of her community, traveling by packhorse as a librarian in the rugged mountains of Kentucky. It is a harsh world and when the faraway influences of New York hurt the local economy with something dealing with banks shutting down - a Depression, her pa takes off in search of work. Tansy and her brother Josh are entrusted with keeping the family looked after.

When Caleb Barton returns to the mountain, he expected to find Tansy wed and with a houseful of little ones about her. After all, he left before she could break his heart. But with his brother dead, Caleb needs to look after Ma Vesta and Reuben's widow Peggy Sue and her two little ones. Could he get a second chance to marry the girl, the woman, of his heart? He sure hopes so, he just needs her to see him as a suitor for her and not as a disappointed suitor of her sister. But can a man of the mountain appeal to a woman who dreams of the world beyond that she has only ever seen through words on a page?

Along a Storied Trail is a lovely piece of historical fiction. Actually, this book had moments that reminded me of Catherine Marshall's Julie and Christie. More so of Christie just because of the rural mountainous location. Julie because of a flood that the community has to face.  Overall I think this an enjoyable book and anyone who enjoys American Historical Fiction set during the Great Depression will find much that is appealing in this newest offering from Ann H. Gabhart. Would make an excellent book discussion selection!

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Kentucky packhorse librarian Tansy Calhoun doesn't mind the rough trails and long hours as she serves her Appalachian mountain community during the Great Depression. Yet she longs to find love like the heroines in her books. When a charming writer comes to town, she thinks she might have found it--or is the perfect man actually closer than she thinks?

Perdita Sweet has called these mountains home for so long she's nearly as rocky as the soil around her small cabin. Long ago she thought she could love, but when the object of her affection up and married someone else, she stopped giving too much of herself away to others.

As is so often the case, it's easier to see what's best for others than to see what's best for oneself, and Perdita knows who Tansy should choose. But why would anyone listen to the romantic advice of an old spinster?

Saddle up for a heartfelt story of love--love of family, love of place, and the love of a lifetime--from bestselling author Ann H. Gabhart.

Bon Voyage to Murder ~ Review with Giveaway

Bon Voyage to Murder
A Fiona Quinn Mystery #8
By C.S. McDonald
Narrated by Maren Swenson Waxenberg

The cruise that Fiona Quinn envisioned sharing with her boyfriend Nathan Landry doesn't go quite how she imagined. First off, before boarding the ship they make the acquaintance of an old country-western singer, who calls the Athena home. And from there the cruise goes down for Fiona and Nathan, at least as far as rest and relaxation go.

When an attempted murder is suspected, Nathan and Fiona put their sleuthing skills to work. With no witnesses, all they have are speculations and accusations. Soon the weeklong cruise has escalated into a murder investigation. But can they find what they need to point them in the right direction?

Meanwhile, Fiona's brother Chad has his own problems while house-sitting for Fiona. First off he isn't familiar with grandma's lingering effect on the family home. And then there is Fiona's dog, Harriet, let's just say that Chad is not the best pet sitter for a little Maltese. And then when Chad calls on his friends to help - well let's just say the visual I got was most interesting.

Bon Voyage to Murder just might make you reconsider taking a cruise. Though this is a murder mystery it is a cozy mystery. There are no depictions of murder so if you want to avoid anything graphic this book will provide you with just such a mystery.

The narration by Maren Swenson Waxenberg is well presented. Each character has a unique voice so one can easily follow shifts in character voice. The pacing is good and at under 7 hours a perfect length for a week of commuting. I think Maren perfectly presents this book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

*This book is a clean read though Fiona and her boyfriend are sharing a cabin. There are a few kisses but nothing more takes place between the two.

Regaining Mercy ~ Review

Regaining Mercy: Elnora Island
Independence Islands #12
Elnora Island #6
By Carolyn Miller

Mindy Murray can't escape the label that has followed her all her life thanks to her family's less than stellar reputation. Being a single mom and having a short stint on Love at First Glance hasn't helped her image at all. Going on a reality show was only to get money to help care for her son Jon and his needs. But the pious old-timers don't see her as anything more than a trashy tramp and a blight on her late grandmother's reputation. Worse their bullying has cost her her job.

When Dermott Reilly stands up for her, Mindy isn't sure why he would even bother other than the fact that he was friends with her brother. But helping Mindy opens Demott's eyes to just how tough her life is and how much she cares for her son. But Mindy's spiritual state has him wary of pursuing a relationship with her. But when his company needs Mindy's skills with social media for a garden competition he finds himself spending a lot more time with her, getting to know her and Jon better. And the more he learns the more he wants to be part of their life but Mindy finds it hard to believe anyone would want to be a permanent fixture in her life. Her past is proof that she isn't worthy of anyone wanting her in their life and she can't really blame them as she knows where she came from.

Regaining Mercy is a contemporary romance of second chances. There are some misunderstandings that add to Mindy's feelings of unworthiness. But when the storm reaches its climax the reader sees just who Mindy is at her core. Overall this is a well-written story, the characters are well-developed and the perfect weekend island escape. For the most part, this is a feel-good story but like real life, there are ups and downs that must be faced.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
A mom ready to do anything for her son.
A man determined to win the woman he loves.

Going on Love at First Glance had seemed like such a good idea. She didn’t care about finding Mr. Right. No, Mindy Murray chose the reality TV show for more mercenary reasons.  A mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do when it comes to feeding her son.

When Mindy returns to Elnora, the girl from the “wrong side of the island” just wants a chance to rebuild her reputation. Too bad the folks at church don’t practice what the preacher preaches.

Enter Dermott Reilly. The interim boss at Greener Gardens has always had a soft spot for Mindy and her son, but with his new responsibilities, an important garden competition, and a few other concerns, he finds it difficult to prove himself to her.

A tropical storm and a missing child prove that sometimes grace appears in the most unusual ways.

Regaining Mercy concludes the Elnora Island romances of the Independence Islands Series, featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily-ever-afters.

The Independence Islands Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.

Bridge of Gold
Bridge of Gold
Doors to the Past #3
By Kimberley Woodhouse

Bridges of Gold takes the reader to San Francisco and follows two stories. One is set in 1933, at the time of the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. The other story is set in the present day and repairs are taking place on the same bridge. When repairs uncover a mystery from the past the two story threads start to draw together.

But what does this mystery mean to the main characters involved in the two story threads?

Kayla Richardson has been called in when the wreckage of a ship is found near the restoration site of the Golden Gate Bridge. Working with Steven Michaels, soon finds Kayla involved in more than a restoration and excavation. Human remains have been found and for some reason, someone seems determined to keep them from the truth.

Luke Moreau sees his job as a diver on the construction of a bridge that will span the San Francisco Bay as the means to fulfilling his hopes and dreams. What he never expected is that it could cost him his life. The greatest danger comes not from the work but rather from an unknown enemy driven by greed.

Bridge of Gold is both historical and contemporary fiction with romance, mystery and, suspense running throughout. Part of the Doors of the Past series this book is a standalone title that takes the reader on an adventure that spans nearly a century. The pacing is steady with moments of intensity that don't overwhelm the senses. Overall this is a well-thought-out story that is will take the reader away from their every day for a few well-spent hours. There is nothing overly graphic so sensibilities should not be offended in any way. I have no qualms about recommending this book to any teen or adult reader.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Texas Baby Cover-Up ~ Review

Texas Baby Cover-Up
Cowboy Lawmen #4
By Virginia Vaughan

Kellyanne Avery's life is about to be upended when her friend Lisa is murdered. The upending occurs when Kelly discovers that Lisa has named her as Brady's guardian. She knows that she will never be the mother that he needs no matter how much she has grown to love him. But someone has decided that Kelly and Brady are a threat and must be gotten rid of.

With her off-again, on-again ex the only thing keeping her safe Kelly finds herself returning home. She never wanted to find herself in the position of needing her family or Zeke Tyler, but to keep Brady safe she will do almost anything. It is hard to change a lifetime of stubborn independence but to stay alive Kellyanne just might need to learn to do so and fast.

This is the fourth book in the Cowboy Lawmen series and it can easily be read as a standalone book if you have not yet had time to be introduced to the Avery family. But you may want to make room in your schedule to check out the first three books later after reading the Texas Baby Cover-Up

Zeke never wanted to leave Courtland but Kellyanne couldn't wait to leave and get out from under her brothers' overbearing protection. But sometimes we need to go home to discover what it is we truly want.

If you want suspense that won't keep you awake from overly graphic scenes you will thoroughly enjoy this latest offering from Virginia Vaughan. There is no lack of action or drama but nothing unbelievably over the top. This is an excellent escape book for those hot summer days and evenings that are here.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

A mother’s secret got her killed.

Now they must protect her baby…

After the shock of finding her best friend murdered, Kellyanne Avery’s focused on caring for her friend’s sweet baby—until the killer returns, determined to kidnap the child. Now Kellyanne needs the one man she trusts with her life: her ex-flame, Deputy Sheriff Zeke Tyler. But as they hide on her family’s ranch, can Zeke unravel deadly secrets and shield them from harm?
