The Stable Master's Daughter ~ Review with Interview and Giveaway

The Stable Master's Daughter
Regency House Party: Somerstone #4
By Sara Cardon

Sixteen-year-old Marjorie Fairchild has secretly loved Reginald Beauchamp for years, but as the daughter of the estate's stable master, she has no hopes of a future with him. With her Aunt Harriet taking her away to be taught the ways of society she has hopes of at least a respectable marriage.

Three years have passed when Marjorie and Aunt Harriet are invited to the Somerstone Estate of Lady Du'Brevan for a summer house party. To Marjorie's surprise, Reginald has been invited as well much to her aunt's displeasure. And every time Marjorie has a moment with Reginald his older brother, Lord Miles Beauchamp manages to interrupt them.

Miles has hopes that this house party will allow Reginald to make a suitable match, a match that will secure him financially and with a woman who could curtail his wastrel ways. But Reginald seems intent on pursuing Marjorie for less than gentlemanly pursuits. And Reginald's friends have even more nefarious designs especially once Marjorie's situation becomes generally known. Determined to protect the daughter of a servant of his estate Miles soon finds himself drawn to Marjorie himself. But a marriage between them is unthinkable, or is it?

Anyone who has read the previous offerings from the Regency House Party: Somerstone will enjoy seeing these three characters, with whom fleeting reference was made, come to life. And with the Countess Du'Breven in the background pulling little strings you know something is about to happen that will alter lives forever.

This is a delightful story that is well read with the other books in the series - the particular order is not important as each can be read first without detracting from the other books. Each could, in fact, be read alone but with all the hints at the other characters why would you want to just read one?

About the Book:
Marjorie’s days as the barefoot daughter of the stable master are long past—she’s an educated and accomplished artist. But at the house party of the summer, she is out of her social depth, especially when reunited with Reginald, a man she has secretly loved for years. Just when he begins to show real interest in her, his older brother Miles tries to separate them and sparks fly. Miles is maddening and intriguing, and stirs a longing for a radiant future, but are his intentions sincere? An alliance is forbidden and a chance for love may cost Marjorie’s dignity and her father’s employment.
Lord Miles Beauchamp is the heir to an earldom and unyielding in his principles. He doesn’t have time for trivial social gatherings, except when reforming his brother. Miles anticipates Reginald’s wandering eye, but is caught off-guard when he pursues a wholesome woman, one Miles is honor-bound to protect. It will take all Miles’ effort to keep his brother in line, Marjorie from harm, and himself from falling in love. In a society keeping them a world apart, can Miles and Marjorie find a future together?

Author Interview:
1)  Who is your favorite comfort read author?
I can’t choose just one. Elizabeth Camden, Sarah Eden, Becky Wade, Karen Witemeyer, and Kasie West.  I love characters and emotion, but I also need logic. I love smart women and good men.
2) What do you most like about the Regency era?
It’s a beautiful time period, full of contrasts I think we relate to well. There was a lot of scarcity, real and perceived, especially with the difference in social classes. But even within the upper class, someone always had more money or titles or sway—not to mention happiness. Also, the Prince Regent set a terrible moral example as a leader, which permeated society. They were at war with France, but wanted to keep it far away and ignore it. The social expectations were difficult to live up to, especially those mothers placed on daughters. It’s both a beautiful time period and terribly flawed, which I think we relate to, and I find it fascinating.
3)  What one author past or present would you like to mentor you?
I’m so grateful to have wonderful mentors. Kathleen Baldwin, author of The School for Unusual Girls series, is a supportive mentor and good friend. I love the way she thinks. Authors Diane Darcy and Kristin Holt have also been so supportive and consistently point me to the best resources. I trust and admire these women.
4) How do develop your setting (a photo, a trip, a random comment)?
I love images, so I use Pinterest. I also try to pay attention to sights, sounds, smells, textures, and anything else that brings the setting to life.
5)  If you could share a cup of tea (or coffee) with anyone who would it be?
I’d choose a diet Dr Pepper and sit down with George Washington. (And if it was evening, he’d probably take his favorite, Madeira wine.) My husband would want to come along, since he knows I have a huge hero crush on George Washington. J It might be a challenge to get George talking about himself though.
6)  Do you have a favorite Regency period author that you would recommend?
I love Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson. It makes me laugh and cry. I adore Sarah Eden’s Regency era novels—they’re the perfect blend of fun and emotional punch. Jennifer Moore does a wonderful job showing different areas of the world during the Regency era and delivering a good romance.
7) Who is your favorite character in your book?
Probably Lord Miles Beauchamp because he’s so decisive, set in his ways, and usually only manages to tolerate people. Each character responds differently to him (and he to them), and it’s fun to see how personalities mesh or clash. I love how Marjorie discovers a new side to him. He makes her more confident, and she helps him lighten up.
8) What one question do you wish you would be asked and how would you answer it?
Hurry up, what’s next?

Sharing my work is hard, (I’m a recovering perfectionist), but when my next perfectly imperfect story is ready, I’d love to share it with you! Currently, I’m working on a 12 Days of Christmas story. I’m also working on story about a captain in the British Royal Navy wooing a jilted woman. I’ve discovered details about the Napoleonic Wars that will help bring it into sharp focus.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms ~ Review

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
The Secret of the Realms: An Extended Novelization
By Mere Rusu
Art by Thomas Fluharty
Screen story by Ashleigh Powell
            and Tom McCarthy

A delightful and engaging story that draws the reader in from the first illustration and the first word.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms: The Secret of the Realms is told in what is called a time-slip fashion, in other words, two different times are presented that as a whole explain the world of the Realms.

We are told about the creation of the Realms through the story of Marie a young orphan who comes to live with Drosselmeyer. Now Drosselmeyer is an inventor who shares his skills with Marie who soon becomes an inventor as well. Marie and Drosselmeyer come across a unique and unknown passage within his home - one that leads to a magical land. It is here that Marie comes into her own and the Four Realms are born.

Upon the death her mother Clara is at loose ends - no one truly understands her need to tinker and create as her mother could. This is the first Christmas without her and the family is about to spend yet another one at the home of Godfather Drosselmeyer. This year Drosselmeyer has strung strings to lead all to their gifts. Clara's string leads her deep into the house to an unexplored corridor which opens upon a beautiful world.

But the beautiful world is in trouble an internal threat may bring down the Realms and Clara as Marie's daughter may be its only hope.

I was enchanted by this world and drawn into it as the two stories worked towards the climax that would determine the fate of the Realms and Clara. I was a little surprised at how it ended which is a good thing because I like being surprised. I also enjoyed the illustrations that opened each chapter - these were black and white and corresponded with the chapter.

I borrowed a copy of this book from my local library system.

About the Book:
This dazzling novel will not only retell the moving story from The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, but half of the book will expand and explore the world of the Walt Disney Studios film with brand-new, exclusive content. Complete with beautiful full-page chapter opener illustrations and never-before-seen details that add new depth to the story, this novel will have readers eager to step into the resplendent world of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms for generations to come.

In Too Deep ~ Review

In Too Deep
Dive Team Investigations #2
By Lynn H. Blackburn

When Adam Campbell's name is linked to what first appears to be a suicide the Carrington County Sheriff's Office recovery operation soon becomes a murder investigation. But what they find is more than a murder and could have far-reaching consequences throughout the county if what they find can be deciphered.

When Adam calls on his friend Dr. Sabrina Fleming to help recover any information on the laptop found submerged with the victim, he's not prepared for what she's about to uncover. And when Sabrina seemingly becomes a target due to her participation in the investigation Adam is determined to keep her safe. But is he willing to tell her how he feels?

In Too Deep brings back all the main characters that we were introduced to in Beneath the Surface and if you read the sneak peek that was in the back you know just what the team is about to discover and the action builds from there. If you haven't read the first book no problem you can catch up later as this time the story focuses more on Adam and Sabrina with Gabe taking a lead role in the investigation.

If you like suspense you'll love this series as the suspense and danger build to a surprising and unexpected conclusion. This is one series that I hope will have another book in the near future.

About the Book:
How do you choose between

loyalty and the truth?

When the Carrington County Sheriff's Office dive team is called in to recover a body from a submerged car, they aren't prepared to find an encrypted laptop--or an unsettling connection between investigator Adam Campbell and the dead accountant.

Adam turns to his friend Dr. Sabrina Fleming to recover the files from the laptop. But the deeper they dig, the deadlier the investigation becomes. When evidence implicates members of Adam's own family, he and Sabrina will have to risk everything to solve the case.

The truth could set hundreds free--but someone is willing to do whatever it takes to silence anyone who threatens to reveal their secrets.

Mistaken Identity ~ Review with Author Interview and Giveaway

Mistaken Identity
Regency House Party: Somerstone #3
By Mindy Burbidge Strunk

Jessica Standish has been drawn to Lord Ian Pinkerton since she saw him, hoping that he would notice her. But with little to recommend her since her father's untimely death, her hope is unlikely to be fulfilled. But as Aunt Lydia repeatedly reminds her Lord Ian "is a complete rake and would destroy" her "tenuous status within the ton."

When Jes and her mother Lady Rachel Standish are invited to a house party, Lady Rachel sees this as a chance to secure a suitable match for Jes before the true state of their dire financial situation is known. At the Somerstone Estate of the Countess Du'Brevan Jes is surprised to see that Lord Ian is in attendance. And upon closer acquaintance, he seems quite different from his reputation.

But Lord Ian is not whom he appears, rather he is Conrad Pinkerton, the Marquess of Kendal, Ian's older twin brother. Hoping to aid his brother Conrad pretends to be Ian, though other than appearance the two couldn't be more dissimilar. One to normally avoid social events, Conrad is pleasantly surprised when he makes the acquaintance of Miss Jessica Standish. But as he finds himself drawn to this most unique young lady he finds himself in a quandary - Jes thinks she is heading towards a possible understanding with Ian!

With a case of Mistaken Identity, someone is about to get hurt if, or rather, when the truth comes out. The only question is how many hearts will leave Somerstone forever broken?

Mistaken Identity is a most enjoyable addition to this series. It is interesting to see how Ian's "friends" interact with him at this house party. The interactions between Jes and Conrad are fun especially Conrad's stories about Somerstone. And then when one gets glimpses of Ian himself, ughhh what a total jerk.

This is the third book in this series all of which can be read in any order or as a standalone book. The series is written by different authors who focus on a different pair of main characters which adds a unique voice to each story. I enjoyed this book and read it in one evening which when one has an early morning workday isn't always a good thing but it was well worth the late night and lack of sleep.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book through SLB Book Tours with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion ~ all thoughts expressed are my own.

Series: Regency House Party
Genre:  Adult, Historical, Regency, Romance
Publisher: Indie
Publication date: September 16, 2018
Conrad Pinkerton, the Marquess of Kendal, despises society; the scheming, the guises, and the games they play. And yet, for his twin brother, he agrees to a temporary guise of his own, pretending to be his brother for a house party. Playing the fop should be easy, as long as he keeps everyone at a distance. But when he meets Jessica Standish, he wishes she didn’t think he was someone else.

Jessica Standish has never been considered worthy by the ton and now that she and her mother are penniless, the chances of a good match seem out of reach. Even the matchmaking schemes of the Countess Du’Breven seem doomed to failure. This house party will change nothing, though it’s hard not to hope when she sees Lord Ian again. The connection between them grows, though he seems so different from the man she remembers.

With his family name and fortune on the line, Conrad knows he should leave with his secret intact. After all, how can she truly love him if she thinks he’s someone else?

About the Author:

3-Mindy Burbidge Strunk
Mindy loves all things history and romance, which makes reading and writing Regency romance right up her alley. When she isn’t living in her alternate realities, she is married to her real-life Mr. Darcy and trying to raise five proper boys. They live happily in the beautiful mountains of Utah.

Author Interview:
1) Who is your favorite comfort read author?

I have several. Rachael Anderson, Rebecca Connoly are at the top of my list. But when I am reading for comfort, it is usually specific books that I read rather than a specific author. At Christmas, I always read Santa Maybe by Aubrey Mace. Halloween is always Unlikely Match by Sarah Eden. At other times of the year, I will often read Seeking Persephone, Kiss of a Stranger, or Friends a Foes by Sarah Eden. Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson, Royal Target by Traci Hunter Abramson, or the Haggarty Series by Betsy Brannon Green.

2) What do you most like about the Regency era?

I love the properness of it all. I love that a simple brush of hands or a look can stir so man emotions and physical responses. I watch TV and see how fast romance moves. There is just something comforting about knowing the kiss will not happen until the end.

3) What one author past or present would you like to mentor you?

Obviously, Jane Austen would be the top of the list. But I would also love Georgette Heyer. For the present day, I would love to be mentored by either Rachael Anderson or Sarah Eden.

4) How do develop your setting (a photo, a trip, a random comment)?

When I first get an idea, I usually go through and create a Pinterest board. I find characters that fit the pictures of my characters that I have in my head. Once I decided general area, I begin to look at places in that area and pin pictures of them. For example, I am working on a story in Scotland right now. At first, I was only thinking about it being in the highlands, but after looking on Pinterest at pictures of the Scottish highlands I came upon a picture of the Isle of Mull. I have fallen in love with this little island. My now fictional estate will be Dunbarton Castle on the Isle of Mull. I think it is easier to describe (sometimes to a fault) and immerse myself in the area if I have as many pictures as possible in my head to help me feel like I am there.

5) If you could share a cup of tea (or coffee) with anyone who would it be?

I would actually choose orange wassel, but that really isn’t the question. This is really hard to narrow down to one person. There are a lot of people I would love to do this with, but all for different reasons. I would love to chat with Jane Austen and ask her what it was like to be a woman in the 1800’s, from her perspective, not from a 21st-century mindset. How did they handle common everyday things that we take for granted? I would also love to speak with Winston Churchill. He had such a unique situation to be a commoner (kinda) but still have close links to nobility. And the man was brilliant. I would also have to add George Washington to that party. I cannot imagine the insecurities and fear that he must have faced daily with first leaving the protection and fighting against the country he had always thought of as a motherland and then guiding a new country through uncharted waters. It amazes me that America survived when everything was working against them to fail. I am sure he would have some fabulous stories to tell.

6) Do you have a favorite Regency period author that you would recommend?

We are very fortunate to have some great Regency era authors. I do not think you can really write Regency without first reading Jane Austen. And I would also include the Bronte’s to that list even though they were technically more in the Victorian era. It is reading the period from people who lived in that period. There is no better source. Georgette Heyer is also a great Regency author. As for current? I have mentioned several already, although I am sure there are others I have forgotten.

7) Who is your favorite character in your book?

Conrad. I love Conrad! He and Jes are a combination of my actual personality. Although, Conrad seems to have more of a filter than I do. It probably comes from being raised as a marquess. I love that he looks out for his peeps. Even Ian, who looks out for no one but Ian. I also love that Conrad can be insecure and uncertain. I know nobility is not supposed to show “weakness” but I like that Conrad shows he is still a just a man and worries about things like if a girl likes him or his brother.

8) What one question do you wish you would be asked and how would you answer it?

I don’t know. For the most part, I’m scared people will ask me a question that I don’t have an answer for. Kinda like this question.

Sorry about that but good answer nonetheless.

The Secret Language of Cats ~ Review

The Secret Language of Cats
By Susanne Schotz

How to understand your cat for
a better, happier relationship

Many people have cats and think of them as a valued member of their family or their best friend. Do you have a cat or cats? But do you truly understand just what your cat is trying to communicate with you?  In The Secret Language of Cats, Susanne Schotz uses her knowledge of phonetics to help us learn just what our kitties are saying.

Each has a unique way of communicating based on their individual situation. The audible sounds that they produce are adjusted so that they are able to obtain their desired results in the fastest way possible (be it for their humans or fellow cat-mates). The question is can we learn their language and communicate with ease?

Most researchers feel that when compared to human communication that of animals is so simple and limited that it cannot be described as a language. If this is truly the case we should all be able to understand what our pets are saying with ease and little thought. But when one gets into this book it easy to see that our cats have a complex and layered style of communication. Communication is not only done through audible means but also touch, body posture, movement, and scent marking.

According to Susanne Schotz, meow is the most common word in cat-speak. But depending on how meow is used it can very different meanings. Just as each person has a unique flavor to their speech so to do our cats and if we take the time to listen we can tell which of our cats is speaking. Our cats' communications are largely based on us and how often we interact and speak to them, after all, most don't like carrying on a one-sided conversation.

I really like how there is an appendix in the back which describes the various sounds which cats produce (the author also has a website on which one can hear examples of these sounds). There are also phonetic tables and a glossary to aid the reader. This is not light reading as one will want to be able to read and study undistracted to fully appreciate all that this book has to offer. Purrfect for the cat-lover in your life or anyone interested in the communications of animals.

I was provided a complimentary proof of this book through TLC Book Tours with no expectations other than that I offer my honest opinion ~ all thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Have you ever wondered what your cat is saying?
Cats do not meow randomly, nor do they growl or hiss because they have nothing better to do. Cat sounds have a purpose, and they can carry important messages, whether for us or other cats.
Susanne Schotz is hard at work on breaking the cat code. She is a professor at Lund University in Sweden, where a long-standing research program is proving that cats do actually use vocal communication—with each other and with their human caretakers. Understanding the vocal strategies used in human-cat communication will have profound implications for how we communicate with our pets, and has the potential to improve the relationship between animals and humans within several fields, including animal therapy, veterinary medicine and animal sheltering.
In The Secret Language of Cats, SchÅ¡tz offers a crash course in the phonetic study of cat sounds. She introduces us to the full range of feline vocalizations and explains what they can mean in different situations, and she gives practical tips to help us understand our cats better.
