Weaver's Needle ~ Review

Weaver's Needle
By Robin Caroll

When a murder results in a missing map - a map that could lead to the rumored Dutchman's Lost Gold Mine - a hunt is on. When Winifred Winslet, the widow of Bartholomew Winslet, calls two different recovery specialists in to locate the map that may have cost her husband his life the race is on and only one of them will be paid.

Landry Parker and Nickolai Baptiste are both drawn against their better judgment to locate the map. Landry needs the money to save her father's business while Nickolai needs the money for his sister. With two very determined and stubborn people on the case the map - if it exists - is sure to be found. There is just one problem - someone wants the map to be lost forever and the rumors about the long lost gold may be a key factor in this case.

Landry and Nickolai are both determined to find the answers that will lead them to the killer and the map, but that may be difficult when someone takes a personal interest in stopping them. And where one murder has been committed what is a couple more?

With danger closing in on them and the clock running down will they solve this case or will they become yet another casualty of a doomed expedition for gold in the Superstition Mountains? Joining forces seems to be the best way to stay alive unless the competition is where the true danger lies. Can Landry and Nickolai trust one another with their backs?

Weaver's Needle takes the reader back and forth between the quest that Landry and Nickolai find themselves on and mysticism of the Indians who call the Superstition Mountains. The spiritual aspects of the Apache portion of the story was presented in such a way that the reader wasn't sure if it was in the present day or in the past until the end of the book (you'll have to read the book for yourself to know the answer for this). This added another layer of complexity to the story and the mystery surrounding the quest for the map and the powerful pull of greed upon the human spirit.

This was an interesting book that gave several potential suspects as to who did it and why. If you are looking for a mystery with a unique twist this may be what you are looking. There is mystery aplenty within these pages and the suspense will keep you flipping the pages if you aren't careful.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:
Two recovery specialists. One murder.
A modern-day treasure hunt becomes a race of survival.

Former Army MP Landry Parker fell into the recovery specialist role quite by accident—to help her ailing father. Now that she’s on her own, she is determined to prove herself and honor her family legacy.

After being shot in the line of duty, former police officer Nickolai Baptiste became a recovery specialist, and he’s good at his job—maybe even the best.

A potential client pits Landry and Nickolai against one another to find the Dutchman’s Lost Gold Mine map that was stolen from her murdered husband, and the potential payday is too enticing to pass up. Landry and Nickolai are no strangers to adventure, but the unlikely partners quickly discover there’s someone after the treasure and there are those who want to ensure the lost mine in Arizona’s Superstition Mountain stays lost forever.

With You Always ~ Review

With You Always
Orphan Train #1
By Jody Hedlund

1857 is a difficult year for those looking for work in New York - Elise Neumann and her siblings know this only too well. But when Miss Pendleton offers them a place to call home off the streets and the promise of work Elise accepts. But the economy is anything but stable as soon rumors spread of other seamstresses being let go. But surely the Seventh Street Mission which is their new home will be safe with Miss Pendleton's support.

Meanwhile, in the elite circles of New York society, Thornton Quincy is going through his own crisis. His father is dying and he has issued a challenge to his two sons - compete for the family's railroad empire. Thornton has always been second to his twin Bradford and he is sure he will again, after all, how can anyone develop a sustainable town plus fall in love and marry within six months.  But their father is not to be dissuaded in his challenge.

When gang fighting brings Elise and Thornton together in a race for their lives neither had any idea that they would ever see one another again. But Elise needs a job and Thornton's new town of Quincy, Illinois needs workers to bring it into being. But getting work through the New York Children's Aid Society means leaving those nearest and dearest to her behind if she hopes to provide for them. But for her family, Elise is willing to make the sacrifice and take whatever work they have for her.

With You Always is a journey that is not only of distance but of heart as both Thornton and Elise learn who they truly are and grow as individuals.  Both need to see past social dictates that label without knowing the person. Can they both learn to see a person for who they truly are at their heart or will they let preconceived perceptions blind them to the truth? Only time will tell and it is running down.

This is yet another step into the past from Jody Hedlund and this time she shares a piece of history I had certainly never before heard of. Who knew that the orphan trains also helped placed women in need of work! For fans of historical fiction with a touch of romance, you'll enjoy this first book in a new series.

I was provided a review copy this book by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review all opinions expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Could following the opportunity of a lifetime
cost them the love of their lives?

One of the many immigrants struggling to survive in 1850s New York, Elise Neumann knows she must take action to care for her younger sisters. She finds a glimmer of hope when the New York Children's Aid Society starts sending skilled workers to burgeoning towns out west. But the promise of the society's orphan trains is not all that it seems

Born into elite New York society, Thornton Quincy possesses everything except the ability to step out from his brother's shadow. When their ailing father puts forth a unique challenge to determine who will inherit his railroad-building empire, Thornton finally sees his chance. The conditions to win? Be the first to build a sustainable community along the Illinois Central Railroad and find a suitable wife.

Thrown together against all odds, Elise and Thornton couldn't be from more different worlds. The spark that ignites between them is undeniable, but how can they let it grow when that means forfeiting everything they've been working toward?

College life hasn't been quite what Kennedy was expecting but it all seems to be finally evening out. Twelve to Murder ~ Review with Giveaway

Twelve to Murder
A Mac Faraday Mystery #7
By Lauren Carr
Narrated by James C. Lewis

It was the perfect early morning in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, at least it was. The peacefulness is broken upon the discovery of a double homicide. And the clue that is left behind points to a washed-up former child-star. But is the clue the killer's identity or an attempt frame Lenny Frost?

Mac Faraday and David O'Callaghan are determined to get to the bottom of this crime but before they can start putting the pieces together - Lenny Frost acts - taking hostages and demanding his name be cleared. And he's given them a timeline and the clock is counting down to midnight...

With time against them and a scarcity of clues Mac, David and rest of the Spencer police force have their work cut out for them. Fortunately, or not, Gnarly is on their side and Gnarly always gets his man.

To truly understand this case and all its complexities Mac and David will have to delve into the past of Lenny and that of the Stillman's, the couple found murdered in their summer home, If they can discover the why they will discover who killed them and why Lenny was implicated.

With the clock ticking down the suspense goes up. And with Gnarly around you know there will be laughs and awkward moments - after all a kleptomaniac German Shepherd is not to be ignored. The mystery is steady throughout and the identity of the killer is exposed in such a way that the reader/listener will be kept involved throughout the story.

The writing style is steady with no drag and the narration is a good blend with the story. The narrator, James C. Lewis, with his reading suits the pacing of the story. His voice is not grating and he does each character justice including Gnarly.

At 6 hours and 39 minutes, this is audiobook is a perfect for length for work commutes. If you are looking for an easy on the eyes book this is the perfect alternative. And if you are in search of a mystery that will keep you in suspense give this one a try. Audiobooks are the perfect foil for readers who like to skip ahead in their books

Cancelled Vows ~ Review with Giveaway and Author Guest Post

Cancelled Vows
A Mac Faraday Mystery #11
By Lauren Carr
Narrated by James C. Lewis

With six days until their wedding, David O'Callaghan and Chelsa Adams are finally getting their wedding license. At least that was the plan until a small bump threw off their plans. David is already married. And the worst part is he was and is completely in the dark about it.

But as they say, the wedding must go on. He just has to divorce his first wife before the marriage can take place. So it is off to the Big Apple for David, Mac Faraday, and Gnarly (a K-9 with military duty in his resume). With 5 days to get a divorce, the clock is against them.

But time is the least of their worries once they find David's wife - murder is. And David soon finds himself caught in a dangerous game with some who are no longer New York's finest and his life, along with that of research assistant Ali Harding, is on the line.

As the story progresses, one has to wonder will David make it back to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. And if he does can he heal the hurt that he has caused Chelsa? And more than one person is hiding  a secret that could have a bearing on this case.

This is an action packed book that opens with the moment of peak action before delving into the back story that found David in an unexpected situation that makes him public enemy #1 in New York City and on the run. But with Mac and Gnarly on his side, the odds are in his favor that he may actually make it out of New York alive. And this is about to be a wedding not to be forgotten in Deep Creek Lake anytime soon. And with Gnarly around it is never boring.

The writing style is steady with no drag and the narration is well suited to the story. The narrator's voice is not grating and he does a fairly good Gnarly growl - not that my dogs felt threatened but one can believe that it is a growl.

At 10 hours and 14 minutes, this is an audiobook that is a good length perfect for long commutes or not even not so long (mine is normally 15 minutes) It is also a good listen for an easy on the eyes book. If you are looking for a mystery that will keep you in suspense give this one a try.

I was provided a free copy of this book by the author with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Gnarly: When Fiction Comes to Life
By Lauren Carr

From the beginning, I have known and been told by multiple sources, that I am not realistic. Used to be, people would tell me that in the form of “Let me tell you what your problem is.” Now that my books have been selling, I’m told that in the tone of “You have a wonderful imagination. What else do you have in that pretty little head of yours?”

When it comes to writing, I prefer to substitute my own reality. When writing a newspaper article,
substituting your own reality doesn’t work. Feature editors frown on you telling readers that the giant
pond the landscaper installed in the golf course around the time that his wife disappeared would be the perfect place to hide her body—at least not without any actual proof.

That’s not to say that reality can’t be entertaining. I have found that reality can be amusing when looked at in the right light or with the right twist.
Gnarly

Which is where Mac Faraday’s Gnarly, the kleptomaniac German shepherd, came from.

Gnarly was not in first draft of It’s Murder, My Son. Between drafts, my son was given a puppy during half-time at a football game. No, Ziggy was not a door-prize. A woman came up to my then seven-year-old son and asked, “Would you like to hold my puppy?” I thought, what harm can come from holding a puppy. As soon as he had it, she said, “He’s free. You can keep him.” Then, she was gone.

We named him Ziggy. Tristan wanted to call him Cutie-Pie. But then I envisioned telling a sixty-pound Australian Shepherd to let go of a burglar’s leg. “Down, Cutie-Pie.” It’s hard to say that with a straight face. So, we settled on Ziggy.

Ziggy was a kleptomaniac. Things would disappear around the house. Shoes, towels, articles of clothing, some of my underwear, would disappear only to be found under our bed, where Ziggy made his den. As with Gnarly, a dog trainer explained that Ziggy’s kleptomania was out of boredom.

In researching this, I found various sources of similar incidents. Bonnie, a bassett hound in my mother’s neighborhood, was a known thief. My mother learned to never leave shoes, books, or articles of clothing on her patio because Bonnie would steal it. Once, my mother looked out the window to spot Bonnie running off into the woods behind her house with her rake. She couldn’t believe that that dog, with its short little legs, was able to carry off a rake with its long handle, but she saw it with her own eyes.

In Old Loves Die Hard, my editor questioned the possibility of Gnarly walking into a store, shoplifting a bone, and leaving without anyone stopping him—until I sent her the video of the news report, complete with security footage. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anDvU530g2o)

She had a similar reaction to the opening of Shades of Murder, when Gnarly held up the package
delivery truck for dog biscuits. For this, I didn’t have film footage. I only had witness statements about a husky name Sarge in our own neighborhood who blocked the road until the drivers pay the toll.

After featuring Gnarly in several mysteries, I found myself yearning to have a German Shepherd named Gnarly. I had made Gnarly a German Shepherd, instead of Australian, out of memory for Winston, a German Shepherd my husband and I had when we were first married. As happens with all dogs eventually, Winston grew old and passed away.

The real life Gnarly was born November 30, 2012.

Gnarly had proven to be as strong-willed as his namesake. Gnarly believed it is best to start the day at
six o’clock in the morning by leaping up onto the bed, and clawing the covers off of me until I’d get up to let him outside to patrol the perimeter. Then I’d stumble to the coffeemaker to push the button and start my day.

Smart: Yep, the real Gnarly was just as smart as the fictional one. At three months he could sit, stay,
wait, down, walk on a leash, and steal socks and underwear out of the laundry and hide it just like his
namesake.

Like Gnarly in Candidate for Murder, my Gnarly ran for elected office. Last year, he ran for President of the United States in a local mock election—and won! There was some tough campaigning, but I am proud to say that Gnarly and his opponents (Oliver the Cat and Squirt the Goldfish) were dignified and respectful on the campaign-trail.

Like Mac and Gnarly, we were inseparable partners. Sadly, it was only for four years. On Thursday,
December 8, 2016, my heart was broken when Gnarly passed away from canine cancer.

For two months, my handsome guy and best canine friend had battled a brave good fight. Stroking his
tall ears, I had prayed that God would bless this beautiful dog with a miracle to save him. It wasn’t like I was asking for a big miracle. Gnarly was just a dog—but he was my best friend—my muse. God, can’t You bless me with this one little miracle?

Sterling
The next day, December 9, I called the breeder from whom I had gotten Gnarly to give her the sad news. Kindly, I declined her offer for a free puppy, explaining that we did not want to go through the puppy training.

“Well,” Deb said, “if you don’t want a puppy, maybe you’ll be interested in Gnarly’s nephew.”

Gnarly’s nephew!

On Thursday, December 8, the very same day that Gnarly had passed away—his nephew had landed in an animal shelter.

Gnarly’s sister, Morgan, had been adopted by another dog breeder, Vicki. One of her puppies, Sterling had been adopted by a family who lived one state away. In the midst of a nasty divorce, neither parent wanted the responsibility of the German shepherd, so the wife surrendered him to the county animal shelter. During check-in, the animal control officer discovered that Sterling had been microchipped, which was still registered to the breeder, and called Vicki to notify her that they had one of her dogs.

Luckily, one of Vicki’s calls to vent her outrage was to fellow breeder Deb, who told me the news:
Gnarly’s nephew is in jail!

Yes, I know I was emotional, but immediately I saw the love connection that God had in mind for us. I lost Gnarly—my best friend—on the same day that his nephew lost his family and his home. I had to save Sterling. For eleven days, the breeders and I battled the system for Sterling’s release.

On the day Sterling became available for adoption, I was at the animal shelter one hour before they
opened. After all of my phone calls to them, they knew I would be making the hour and a half drive to secure his release, so they let me in.

After completing the dozens of forms and paying all of the necessary fees, the animal control officer
asked, “Do you have any questions?”

“Can I meet him?”

The animal control officer’s eyes got big. “You haven’t met him?”

That’s right. I was so set on adopting Gnarly’s nephew that I had just signed dozens of adoption forms and paid fees for the German shepherd sight unseen. All I knew about Sterling was that he was Gnarly’s nephew and he lost his family and home on the same day that I lost my Gnarly. We were meant to save each other.

So, I waited in the reception area for them to bring out the jail bird who I had just agreed to take home to my family. Sure, there were a dozen things that could be wrong with him. Sterling could be a vicious dog who didn’t like people. Maybe he didn’t get along with other dogs, which would create chaos with Storm, our other German shepherd. Whatever the case, I was prepared to do what I had to deal with it. We were now stuck with each other.

A few minutes later, I heard this loud deep bark as the animal control officer was dragged into the
reception area by Canine Inmate #227.

After eleven days of living in a cage, Sterling was bouncing off the walls, overturning water dishes,
jumping all over anyone who came near him. This good looking guy clawed his way toward me and I
knelt down to meet him eye to eye. As our eyes met, Sterling drop down onto the floor and laid his head in my lap—just like those last moments that I had with Gnarly.

The bond between us was instant.

Since his release from jail, Sterling has fit into our family like a glove. Of course, it is impossible to not compare him to Gnarly (the fictional and real one), who had a lot of bad boy ways that endeared him to me—like landing in jail and ending up in a book.
