Anomaly ~ Team Novel Teen Blog Tour

Anomaly
By Krista McGee
Question.
 Feel.
Believe.

Thalli is an anomaly.  She thinks.  She questions.  And she feels!

In a world where emotion has been eliminated Thalli is a threat not only to herself but to Pod C.  Emotions destroyed the world but for the few that managed to survive below the surface.  Pod C is the third generation to be created and emotion was to have been stripped from their genetic make-up, but something is wrong with Thalli - she feels.

With minutes left before her life is ended Thalli must decide whose truth she is going to believe.  Is the truth that she has been taught her whole life true?  Or should she believe John, a man from before when times were primitive, a man who believes in The Designer a being who is not human?  Even more intriguing John speaks of emotions and feelings as if they were a blessing and not a horrible disease.  And what about Berk her childhood friend that has tried to protect her and save her life?

But The Ten are determined to save the world that they have created and if Thalli's death will help them accomplish that goal so be it!

Anomaly is the first book in a new dystopian trilogy from Thomas Nelson, who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  If you like books that hook you with the climax at the beginning of the book you will LOVE Anomaly, just don't let The Ten know or this may be the last book you ever read!

Though of a different genre than her previous works, Krista still hits the mark with an entertaining and enjoyable reading experience.  She creates characters that one truly cares about and doesn't mind spend time getting to know them.  Though the target audience is Young Adult I would say that adults and some older J Fiction readers will find much to capture their attention as well.

Book blurb:
Thalli has fifteen minutes and twenty-three seconds to live. The toxic gas that will complete her annihilation is invading her bloodstream. But she is not afraid.

Decades before Thalli’s birth, the world was decimated by a nuclear war. But life continued deep underground, thanks to a handful of scientists known as The Ten. There they created genetically engineered human beings who are free of emotions in the hope that war won’t threaten the world again.

Thalli is an anomaly, born with the ability to feel emotions and a sense of curiosity she can barely contain. She has survived so far by hiding her differences. But then her secret is discovered when she’s overwhelmed by the emotion of an ancient piece of music.

The Ten quickly schedule her annihilation, but her childhood friend, Berk—a scientist being groomed by The Ten—convinces them to postpone her death and study her instead. While in the Scientists’ Pod, Thalli and Berk form a dangerous alliance, one strictly forbidden by the constant surveillance.

As her life ticks a way, she hears rumors of someone called the Designer—someone even more powerful than The Ten. What’s more, the parts of her that have always been an anomaly could in fact be part of a much larger plan. And the parts of her that she has always guarded could be the answer she’s been looking for all along.

Thalli must sort out what to believe and who to trust, before her time runs out.

Interview with Krista McGee

1) What inspired you to write Anomaly
I have always loved dystopian stories, from books like 1984, Brave New World and The Giver to movies like Gattica and Matrix. But I always wished a dystopian story would be told from a Christian worldview. When my publisher asked if I'd be willing to tackle just that, I jumped at the chance!

2) How was writing Anomaly different than First DateStarring Me, and Right Where I Belong? And do you have a preference in the these two genre?
Writing Anomaly was different in so many ways. In my first books, the world in which my characters lived was real, and the time period was now. In Anomaly, the world is fictional and it is set in the future. Also, in my first books, the plots were taken from biblical stories. In Anomaly, the plot was all mine. So there was much more creative freedom in Anomaly, but it was more difficult to write. I love both genres, though. I don't think I could pick a favorite.

3) What 3 adjectives would you use to describe Anomaly?
Unflinching, Unpredictable, and Underground

4) If you had to pick one character that you most closely related to in Anomaly, who would it be and why this character?
I am probably most like Thalli - as a teen, especially, I felt different from everyone around me. I also love music, and God has used music to draw me closer to him. And I can sometimes be a little too curious and overly emotional :).

5) You open Anomaly with the line "Fifteen minutes and twenty-three seconds. That's how long I have to live." This opening just pulled me right into the story and I have to admit kept me up until 4:30, because I wanted to know what happened. Did this opening come to you early in the process of writing this book, or did it come later?
That line was actually there from the beginning. When I sat down to write the proposal for this novel, it was there. I knew readers would need to be pulled in immediately - especially since the setting and characters are so different from setting and characters in contemporary novels. What better way to grab the reader than by giving them a countdown to death?

6) Will this be a multi-book series or will there just be two?
This is a trilogy - the second book, Luminary, will release in January and the third, Revolutionary, is out next July.

7) Which of your characters(any book) would you most like to spend the afternoon with? Why this character?
Great question! I'd probably go back to Right Where I Belong and hang out with Brian. He was my favorite character to write, partly because he is a projection of what I think my son, Thomas (age 10), will be like when he is 18. I'd enjoy listening to his antics and hearing his stories.

Daughter of Light TNT Blog Tour with Giveaway!

Daughter of Light
By Morgan L. Busse

Daughter of Light opens with a woman running for her life.  A woman, named Mercia, who is trying to save the life of her daughter by getting to the White City.  But her time has run out...

Approximately 20 years have passed since Mercia's attempt to reach the White City when we are introduced to Rowen Mar, Captain Lore, Caleb Tala, and Nierne - four very different people from the various corners of this world.  Rowen has just lost her father to war.  Captain Lore is Captain of the Guard for Lord Gaynor Celestis, High Lord of the White City.  Caleb Tala is an assassin for his cousin Lord Corin. Nierne, a scribe at the Monastery of Thyria, was rescued by Father Roth when she as a child.

When a mark appears on Rowen's hand she is accused of being a witch and exiled upon pain of death should she ever return to Cinad.  When she is offered a position as varor Rowen is provided a means to escape the village that has just thrown her out.  But to become varor for Lady Astra will require training - physical training.  Can Rowen keep her mark and her frightening power a secret?

Captain Lore, tasked with overseeing Rowen's training, is puzzled by Rowen's demeanor.  He senses that something in her past has hurt her though he doesn't know what.

Meanwhile in Thyria something evil is moving in, an evil that most had forgotten had ever walked the land. An evil known as the Shadonae who bring with them the Mordra.  Only by calling upon the Word does Nierne survive the utter destruction of city.  With the only possible hope for stopping this ancient evil lying in the White City, Father Rath and Nierne are tasked with the mission.  But they are being hunted by the very beings they are hoping to stop.  Do any Eldaran yet live or has Nierne taken on a hopeless quest?

As the Temanins take their war to the very walls of the White City, Caleb is determined to destroy, in one night, the power of both the White City and that of Avonia.  Caleb's attack forces Rowen to use the powers that she has been hiding.  Will the White City now, out of fear, turn on the one person that could save it from the danger it will soon face?

To be perfectly blunt there is no way to review this book to do it justice to it without giving too much away.  I just finished up the CSFF blog tour for Patrick Carr's A Cast of Stones and The Hero's Lot and other tour participants were commenting on how little Christian Speculative Fiction is written for adults, well here you go!

This book has all the elements you could want.  A misunderstood outcast.  A heroic figure who calls upon God.  Danger.  An impossible mission (several in fact).  A closely guarded secret.  A hero is disguise.  A chance at redemption.  A world in the balance.  And a touch of romance.  Something for almost everyone.

The characters are an intriguing and compelling group.  Some you develop a fondness for, others you would run the other way if you saw them coming.  Daughter of Light  drew me in and held my attention to the very end.  Looking forward to reading book 2 Son of Truth sometime in the near future.

I was provided a digital copy of this book for the purpose of honestly reviewing it for this blog tour.

Book blurb:
What if with one touch you could see inside the soul?

Rowen Mar finds a strange mark on her hand, and she is banished from her village as a witch. She covers the mark with a leather glove and seeks sanctuary in the White City. She lives in fear that if she touches another person, the power inside her will trigger again, a terrifying power that allows her to see the darkness inside the human heart . . . But the mark is a summons, and those called cannot hide forever. For the salvation of her people lies within her hand.

Captives ~ Blog Tour and Giveaway!

Captives The Safe Lands
Captives
The Safe Lands 1
By Jill Williamson
Levi is the favored son of Justin of Elias.  He is to marry for love.  He is a hunter.  He can go on scavenging trips to Denver City.  And he has earned the respect of his father, something that his younger brothers cannot do no matter how hard they try.

Mason has decided that trying to earn his father's respect and trust is an impossible tasks though he tries his best to please him.  But Omar is determined to win it no matter what the cost, but does he know how much he is going to pay?

The Safe Lands were designed to protect the people from a plague, but what was to be a safety has turned into an even greater danger.  The city is the plague and there is no way to stop it or to save the city without drastic measures.  And Omar and the people of Glenrock may be the Safe Lands last hope.

Omar in an act of betrayal destroys Glenrock and rips Jemma and Levi apart just days before their marriage.  Can Levi find a way to get within the city and free those who have been taken against their will?

The ease of life in the Safe Lands is a powerful draw, but is the loss of their freedom and the chance of becoming infected a reasonable trade?  But the Safe Lands is home to people whose wild ways may have lead to the plague's spread through what was suppose to be a fortress of safety from the plague.

Mason has been put in a position within the Safe Lands where he is able to study the problem of the plague up close.  Can he use the skills he developed in Glenrock and stop the plague?  Can he bring hope where there is none or will it merely be false hope?

As Mason struggles to cure the plague and to save the people of Glenrock from forced surrogacy, Levi is working on a plan of escape.  Meanwhile Omar is falling into all that the Safe Lands has to offer in an attempt to hide from his guilt over what went wrong with his grand plan.

If you liked the Hunger Games or The Sky Chasers series but wanted books that offered something more you will love Captives.  Captives has a belief in something more than self and learning to accept the person God made you to be.  Captives will tug at your heart as you experience the unhappiness that fills the Safe Lands.  The only problem I have is now I have to wait until book 2 is published!

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

About the book:
One choice could destroy them all.
When eighteen-year-old Levi returned from Denver City with his latest scavenged finds, he never imagined he’d find his village of Glenrock decimated, loved ones killed, and many—including his fiancée, Jem–taken captive. Levi is determined to rescue what remains of his people, even if it means entering the Safe Lands, a walled city that seems anything but safe.
Omar knows he betrayed his brother by sending him away, but helping the enforcers was necessary. Living off the land and clinging to an outdated religion holds his village back. The Safe Land has protected people since the plague decimated the world generations ago … and its rulers have promised power and wealth beyond Omar’s dreams.
Meanwhile, their brother Mason has been granted a position inside the Safe Lands, and may be able to use his captivity to save not only his people, but also find a cure for the virus that threatens everyone inside the Safe Lands.
Can Mason uncover the truth hidden behind the Safe Land’s façade before it’s too late?

The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet ~ Blog Tour with Giveaway

The-Revised-Life-of-Ellie-S

Gabrielle Jane Sweet's life has a secret life, a life that she lives by the pen (or in this case the click of the keyboard).  Ellie wants to be called Gabrielle, but as her mother likes to say she just didn't look right for the name when she was born (talk about giving a complex way, to go Mom!).
Ellie's friends don't want much to do with her anymore because she just isn't into guys, especially guys from the community college she doesn't know.  But Ellie still wants friends and Lucy still is, sort of.  To deal with her hurt and frustrations Ellie has taken to writing stories based on her life, but better.  In her stories she's the center of attention and everyone wants to be her or around her.

But when she actually starts to attract the attention of two guys she is dumbfounded why would they be interested in her of all people!  Palmer is charming and every girl's dream and Chase is a bad boy with a dangerous reputation.  Ellie's always been the good girl who avoids the party scenes.  But Ellie can't tell her parents about Chase and Palmer won't tell anyone about Ellie.

Adding to the confusion that is Ellie's life is her writing.  Using her pain and her changing friendships Ellie has created a world where her life is more the way she wants it to be.  But if this gets out Ellie will pay the price.
Ellie is the kind of girl I can so relate to.  Staying home to study.  Late nights writing.  Not going to parties just so she can read a book (I have so used this reasoning when I've been asked to a party and it's the truth).

The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet is an enjoyable book you will want to re-read and I am so looking forward to book 2!  Chase or Palmer who will Ellie chose?  Will you step out of the shadows or will you allow the fears of not measuring up to keep you hidden? Perfect for your favorite YA reader who loves clean teen fiction.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Publisher: Playlist Fiction
Here is the blurb:
Ellie Sweet is a lot of things—good girl, novelist, silent adorer of the new boy at school, Palmer. But when “outcast” gets added to the list, she decides it’s time to take reality into her own hands … and tweak it as needed.
In the pages of her book, she’s Lady Gabrielle, favorite of the medieval Italian court. Her once-friends are reduced to catty ladies-in-waiting, and the too-charming Palmer—who in real life never spares her a second word—gets to be nothing more than a rake wracked by unrequited love for her. She even has a perfect real-life villain in the brooding Chase, who hails from the wrong side of town.
But just when she’s getting along great in her fictional world, the real one throws her a few curves. With Chase pursuing her, Palmer wanting to date her—but in secret—and the details of her manuscript going public, Ellie suddenly receives more attention than she ever really wanted. And when her former-friends discover what she’s been writing, they’re determined to teach Ellie a lesson about the severe consequences of using her pen as her sword.

STORM

The Swipe Series

by Evan Angler

Storm
If you have been keeping up with these banned books by Evan Angler you know everything is not as good as General Lamson has lead us to believe.  If not for the efforts of Dust we might never have been made aware of these problems, problems that came to light through the illegal activities of Dust, Logan Langly, and Erin Arbitor.

After 10 years of negotiations the world has been unified, but Global Union does not mean global peace.  Markless protests are continuing and the drought is continuing bringing a shortage of food for the American State.  But beneath it all is subterfuge and sabotage, someone or something is bringing unnecessary suffering and the question is why?

Lily Langly, who was long thought dead, is a an IMP in Beacon City.  For some reason Cylis head of the European State wants to speak with Lily. Cylis has a mission for Lily, a mission that could affect the world and cost Lily her life.

But Lily isn't willing to risk everything she's achieved to accomplish Cylis's goal so she reaches out to Dust and her brother.  Will love blind Logan to the chance that Lily may betray them or is his trust in his sister justified?  Can they stop the permadrought before it is too late?

Logan has questions that only one person can answer.  But Beacon is looking for him, can he get in and out undetected?

Storm is as nerve-wracking and intense as Swipe and Sneak.  Don't miss out on the third offering of this exciting series.  Discover the truth for yourself before it is too late!  Logan needs you to join in the fight and to refuse the Mark - your life depends on it!

I was provided with a copy of this book by the publisher: Thomas Nelson for the purpose of this review.  All opinions expressed are my own.

About Storm:

In a future United States under the power of a charismatic leader, everyone gets the Mark at age thirteen. The Mark lets a citizen shop, go to school, and even get medical care—without it, you are on your own. Few refuse to get the Mark. Those who do . . . disappear.

Logan Langly went in to get his Mark, but he backed out at the last minute. Ever since, he’s been on the run from government agents and on a quest to find his sister Lily, who disappeared when she went to get her Mark five years earlier. His journey leads him to befriend the Dust, a vast network of Markless individuals who dissent against the iron-grip rule of the government. Along the way to the capital to find Lily, the Dust receive some startling information from the Markless community, opening their eyes to the message of Christianity and warning that humanity is now entering the End of Days.

In Storm, Logan and his friends are the leaders of the Markless revolution. But while some Markless are fighting Chancellor Cylis’ army, the Dust is busy trying to find a cure for a horrible epidemic sweeping through the Marked. And it’s difficult for them to know who to trust, especially when they aren’t sure if Logan’s sister Lily, one of the commanders in Cylis’ army, is on their side or not. And all across the nation—and the world—the weather has become less stable and a storm is brewing that bigger than any of them could have ever imagined.

Rock Harbor Search and Rescue ~ Blog Tour

Rock Harbor
Search and Rescue
By Colleen Coble and Robin Caroll

Rock Harbor is the destination of tourists and surfers and it is Emily O'Reilly's home.  But when a valuable necklace is stolen at the Annual Fall Festival and it is replaced with a copy that Emily made Rock Harbor doesn't seem too friendly anymore.

Suspicion places its eyes firmly on Emily and hardly anyone believes her, including her own father!  To make matters worse, her father insists that the money Emily earned at the festival be given to Mary Dancer!  How can this be happening?  The money she had earned towards the purchase of her Search and Rescue puppy was now gone.

Everyone at school is whispering and pointing fingers at her and her former friend Rachel Zinn outright accuses her of planning the theft and Gretchen Siller backs-up Rachel's story.  With the support and help of her best friend Olivia, her younger brother Timmy, and his best friend Dave, Emily is determined to clear her name and solve the case.

Every lead they come up with proves useless.  Why would anyone steal a necklace valued at $1000.00?  Who could be that desperate and why replace it with the copy Emily had made?  If they can come up with the answers to these questions they can solve the case and get back the money Emily had earned for her puppy before it is too late!

Rock Harbor Search and Rescue is an exciting page-turned that both pre-teens and young teens should love as they try to solve the case along with Emily and Olivia.  Share in the excitement as Emily goes on search and rescue with her step-mother Naomi.  And feel her pain at her father's lack of trust.  This is definitely a book that you won't want to put down until you get to the end.

There are also little things that happen throughout the book that will you looking forward to the next one.  Like what's going to happen with Emily and Timmy's mom?  Will she cause problems?  Can she help Brandon overcome his belief in the Windigo? (If you want to learn more about this Algonquian belief check-out this link for Windigo.)

Have you ever had someone not believe you?  Someone like a parent, grandparent, or a teacher?  No matter what you said you just couldn't get them to realize that you had told them the truth?  And even worse you had never given them cause in the past to doubt you now?  If so you will feel Emily's pain at her father's lack of trust.  And if you were punished for this thing you didn't do you will totally sympathize with Emily when her father takes away her chance at getting her search and rescue puppy.

I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this Team Novel Teen blog tour.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Rock Harbor Search and Rescue blurb:
In Rock Harbor Search and Rescue, a middle grade fiction novel based on Colleen Coble’s bestselling Rock Harbor series for adults, kids will enjoy the mixture of pets, adventure, suspense, and a mystery.

But when an expensive necklace is stolen from a renowned jewelry artist at Rock Harbor’s fall festival and Emily is accused of the crime, it looks like she’ll never get her puppy and be able to join the Rock Harbor Search and Rescue team.
Emily isn’t willing to give up on her Search and Rescue dreams that easily, and she sets out to find the real culprit and to restore her reputation. With a few suspects in mind, Emily is determined to uncover the truth, but she isn’t prepared for the secrets she and the Search and Rescue dogs sniff out in the process. Chasing Jupiter ~ Team Novel Teen Blog Tour

Chasing Jupiter
By Rachel Coker

When the world around you falls apart, dreams are all you have....

It's 1969 and the moon missions are all the rage and 16 year old Scarlett Blaine's life seems to be falling apart.  Her parents are fighting about money and Juli's antics.  Her older sister Juli, a hippie, is withdrawing from the family.  Grandpop Barley is having problems with dementia.  And her little brother Cliff is just not normal.  Can life get any more difficult?

But when Cliff and Scarlett watch footage of the moon missions on television, Cliff decides he wants to be the first person to Jupiter.  Scarlett determines that Cliff will get his dream and promises to build the rocket to Jupiter.  But dreams take money and that is the one thing they don't have.

With the help of Frank Leggett they start making money selling peach pies.  Frank's father owns a peach orchard and agrees to supply Scarlett with peaches which she bakes into pies.  Frank, with help from Cliff, builds the stand that Scarlett and Cliff use to sell their pies on Saturdays.

On Fridays, after being volunteered by her mother, Scarlett is helping Mrs. Greene cook meals.  But in the process she makes a friend who is willing to help her navigate some of the questions that life is throwing at her.  The biggest question in Scarlett's life is how to have peace in her life.  But Mrs. Greene's answer isn't exactly what Scarlett is looking for.

As Scarlett, Cliff and Frank spend time together they become friends.  Scarlett and Frank learn that they are both more than they have appeared to others over the years.  Frank is smart and caring and Scarlett is humorous and dedicated to her brother.  Frank has a crush on Juli, which hurts Scarlett because she knows that Juli doesn't even know who Frank is and she has developed feelings for this young man who become her friend over the summer.

But when a series of events changes her family forever Scarlett is left to deal with the new reality and her feelings of guilt.  Could she have done something different so that tragedy could have been averted?  Will the promised rocket to Jupiter ever be built?  With her life in turmoil Scarlett finds herself seeking the peace that Mrs. Greene told her about, the peace that will change her from the inside out.

I enjoyed Chasing Jupiter, but when I read the line "Call 911" I had to take a pause.  I didn't know the 911 system was in use in 1969.  Growing up in Florida I remember when the system started where I lived and it was in the later half of the 1980's.  So I had an interesting time doing research on the history of the 911 emergency call system because of this book.  If anyone is interested in checking out the website I found click the following to read The History of 911.  But back to Chasing Jupiter the characters make you care about them.  You identify with their hurts and joys.  You feel the guilt that they feel when an accident that could have been prevented wasn't.  Don't miss out on this offering from Rachel Coker.

I received a copy of this title from the publisher Zovndervan for the purpose of this review, a favorable review was not a requirement.

Scarlett Blain's life in 1960s Georgia isn't always easy, especially given her parents' financial struggles and the fights surrounding her sister Juli's hippie lifestyle.  Then there's her brother, Cliff.  While Scarlett loves him more than anything, there's no denying his unique behavior leaves Cliff misunderstood and left out.  So when he wishes for a rocket to Jupiter, Scarlett agrees to make it happen, no matter how crazy the idea might be.  Raising the rocket money means baking pies, and the farmer's son, Frank, agrees to provide the peaches if Scarlett will help him talk to Juli.  The problem is, Scarlett really enjoys her time with Frank, and finds herself wondering if, someday, they could be more than friends.  Just as she thinks everything might be going her way, Cliff suffers an accident that not only affects the rocket plans, but shakes Scarlett's view of God.  As the summer comes to an end, Scarlett must find a way to regain what she's lost, but also fulfill a promise to launch her brother's dream.
