Heart of a Royal ~ Review

Heart of a Royal
Daughters of Peverell #1
By Hannah Currie

Heart of a Royal is a lovely book and perfect for Valentine's. For more than 17 years, Mackenna (Kenna) Sparrow has lived the life of a princess. When Princess Alina's mother died shortly after her birth, Kenna was raised alongside her when her mother stepped in to help care for the motherless baby. But though she has lived the life of a royal, Kenna knows that it will all end when Alina marries.

But what Kenna never knew was just how much certain people resented her, though most adored her. And with her final days living as a royal coming to an end, she is torn by her feelings. Her friendships with Princess Alina and Prince Thoraben are seemingly at an end. The fact of which is more painful than she had expected. What does a nearly 18-year-old former princess's companion do for the rest of her life? With questions and no answers in sight, she needs to untangle what she does and doesn't know about those closest to her before she can move forward into her new life as a commoner.

This is the first book in the Daughters of Peverell series, and my goodness, it is filled with secrets and dangers. The land is under threat from rebels and has been to Kenna's knowledge all her life and even before. In fact, a former friend was even expelled from the kingdom because of her rebellious leanings and refusal to see the error of her beliefs! With danger so close, there are fears that Kenna could be a target because of her close association with the royals.

But there is so much more to the story than what first appears, and it is interesting to see how everything unfolds. And believe me, there is a real doozie of a twist. There are actually a couple of twists that reveal some interesting facts about the various characters. It is also interesting how one decision can change the course of a life or even a kingdom. After reading this book, I really need to know what comes next. This book ends not on a cliffhanger, but it is obvious that there is so much more to the story. Overall this is a sweet read and one that explores family, responsibility, and truth. I feel that this is a clean read for teens looking for an alternative to the normal romance that is readily available today.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

About the Book:

Brought to the palace as a newborn, the royal life bestowed upon Mackenna Sparrow was never meant to last forever.

With Princess Alina engaged to be married, Mackenna's presence as a companion is no longer required. And, like it or not, she must return to the birthright that should have been hers - that of a commoner. But not everyone at the palace wants her gone.

When the truths she’s based her life on start crumbling as fast as her future, will she find the courage to trust both herself and the prince she’s fallen in love with?

Isaac's Ice Cream Tree ~ Review

Isaac's Ice Cream Tree
Written by Angela Henderson
Illustrated by Rachael Koppendrayer

What happens to sugar maples when they lose all their leaves for winter? Are they lonely, being all alone with bare branches? These are the questions that trouble Isaac about the beloved sugar maple in his yard. Determined to keep his maple from being lonely, Isaac promises to visit with it daily. At the end of his visit, Isaac leaves a gift, a part of his snack. The next day, a magical gift waits for Isaac.

This is a fun, imaginative story that will delight young readers. The illustrations, in my opinion, would be Isaac's illustrative journalling of the time he spends with his sugar maple, which seemingly has magical abilities. This is a story of winter, the hope of spring, and friendship. For those who like having concepts taught in their books, this book offers colors, days, and seasons.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

The Last Thing She Said ~ Audiobook Review

CHRIS CROSSED MURDER (A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery) by Lauren Carr

THE LAST THING SHE SAID by Lauren Carr
The Last Thing She Said
A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery #3
By Lauren Carr
Narrated by Mike Alger

Nearly 40 years ago, mystery author Mercedes Livingston disappeared. Everyone assumed she and her husband, George were the victims of a kidnapping gone wrong.  But Harper's Ferry has been hiding the truth about this cold case, and now it is up to Chris Matheson and the Geezer Squad to clear their late friend in the decades-old case.

Can the Geezers determine what happened after all these years? They put their varied skills to use and call on those they know they are convinced they can discover the truth. But when Helen's ex shows up, they have to deal with him and all the baggage he's about to dump on Chris.

Anyone familiar with Lauren Carr's other series will enjoy a few brief scenes with Mac, Archie, Joshua, Gnarly, and the political scene brewing on Spencer Mountain. Oh, yeah, there are some interesting developments in regard to Gnarly's mayorship, and Chris's dog Sterling gets caught up in Gnarly's antics (in my opinion, the best story thread in the book and worth a few laughs).
Let's just say Gnarly was at his best in this one in one-upping his political opponent.

With plot twists and a whole cast of suspects, this one will keep the Geezers and the reader occupied with figuring out just what happened all those years ago. But to uncover the truth, they have to go back to the cold case upon which Mercedes Livingston's best-seller was based. And could the last words Mercedes Livingston spoke to Chris all those years ago be a clue?

Get ready for some unexpected twists, betrayals, and political shenanigans in this newest addition to the mystery world created by Lauren Carr.

I listened to the audio version of this book, and the reading by Mike Alger is excellent. This is a murder mystery, so the reader should expect some violence and, in general, misdeeds that don't paint some of the characters in a good light.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

"Too many twists and turns to easily share about this book. Nevertheless, Carr has pulled off another "hit" that kept me reading in one setting until the clues were so well together that the villain fell into our laps...or Chris's, LOL Carr has put a lot into the book beyond the mysteries this time...Characters enjoyed chocotinis, visited book stores...and even blundered into getting engaged (the ring had been purchased 4 months ago)... But, for me, a special thank you for the political spoof at a time when politics at the national level is devastating, gave me a laugh and lightened the load of it all!" - Review by Glenda Bixler, Book Reader's Heaven

About the Book:
“I’m working on the greatest mystery ever,” was the last thing noted mystery novelist Mercedes Livingston said to seven-year-old Chris Matheson before walking out of Hill House Hotel never to be seen again.

For decades, the writer’s fate remained a puzzling mystery until an autographed novel and a letter put a grown-up Chris Matheson on the trail of a cunning killer. With the help of a team of fellow retired law enforcement officers, each a specialist in their own field of investigation, Chris puts a flame to this cold case to uncover what had really happened that night Mercedes Livingston walked out of Hill House Hotel. Watch out! The clues are getting hot!

Winter Frost ~ Audiobook Review

CHRIS CROSSED MURDER (A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery) by Lauren Carr

WINTER FROST by Lauren Carr
Winter Frost
A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery #2
By Lauren Carr
Narrated by Mike Alger

For three years, Chris Matheson has known that his wife Blair was dead, and he has moved on with his life. There is just one little problem he just saw her, and she is very much alive.  Not only is she alive someone is trying to kill her. And now Chris finds himself in the middle of something that has placed a target on his back.

Time to call in the Geezer Squad - the "book club" that Chris's father helped start years ago. But this book club isn't your normal group of retirees who gather after hours to discuss the latest mystery. Nope, this group doesn't crack a book during their get-together, rather they crack cases, and the colder they are, the better they like them. And the case Chris just found himself in needs all the resources the Geezer Squad has at its disposal, especially if they all plan on living long enough to see justice served and national security preserved.

In this case, Chris gets some help from Murphy Thornton an agent who somehow gets himself attached to Chris's case. And then there is Tristan Faraday and Nigel, who find themselves drawn deep into the case thanks to Murphy.  (Fans of Lauren Carr will recognize Murphy, Tristan, and Nigel from her other series)

And, in case you've read the previous book in the series, Ice Chris's mother is most definitely in it, and I can, with all honesty, say she's someone I wouldn't want to meet in person or get on her bad side (which sounds fairly easy to do). And then there is Sterling, a German Shepherd that you don't want to play cards against. Sterling is easily my favorite character in this series, with Thor (the Matheson pet rabbit) running a close second.

Overall this is a good read, or in my case, a good listen. Mike Alger does a great job presenting the story so that one doesn't get bored in the telling. He changes up the pitch and accents of the various characters so that they are distinct and recognizable.

Those who enjoy mysteries will enjoy this Lauren Carr offering. If you haven't read the first book in this series, that is okay, as it is able to be enjoyed as a standalone book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

"Filled with twists and turns, Winter Frost reads perfectly well as a stand-alone, although it is part of a series. The author creates tension and suspense throughout by keeping the reader guessing; she keeps readers engaged with well fleshed out characters and a dash of humor. Sterling, the retired German Shepherd police dog turned card shark, is a new favorite. As the story flows, the truth unfolds, layer by layer, leading to a satisfying conclusion.

It all started with a chance encounter in the city with Blair, his late wife.

The Lady and the Highwayman ~ Review

The Lady and the Highwayman
The Dread Penny Society #1
By Sarah M. Eden
Read by Justine Eyre

The Dread Penny Society has a problem - a new author has overtaken Fletcher Walker in sales. Without his profits, Fletcher and the Society are concerned that their philanthropic endeavors may be hurt. Endeavors to aid the less fortunate and especially the young children at the mercy of those who would use them for nefarious purposes.

Who is Mr. King? This is the question that Fletcher needs to be answered. If Mr. King would aid them in their endeavors all the better. But if he will hinder them and his sales eat into the profits of the other Dreadfuls then they will need to work to topple him from his sales throne. They just need to identify Mr. King, whom no one seems to know.

When an encounter with Miss Elizabeth Black presents itself, Fletcher appeals to her to help him identify Mr. King. Though Elizabeth is a writer of "silver-fork" novels, something of Mr. King's style leads Fletcher to assume he may be an author of the upper-class writing under a pseudonym to protect his identity. Little did Fletcher realize just how close to the truth he truly was.

More than a little amused at Fletcher's request, Elizabeth agrees to aid him in his search for the elusive Mr. King. Not to mention she was more than a little intrigued by Mr. Fletcher Walker himself. With a reputation to uphold and a school to run Elizabeth really shouldn't associate with Mr. Walker, but she does enjoy a stimulating conversation and Fletcher Walker provides that.

The Lady and the Highwayman is a delightful read - there are 3 stories within this book as the stories that both Fletcher and "Mr. King" are working on are presented too. It is a wonderful blending that presents itself well and keeps the reader's attention from beginning to end. I especially enjoyed Elizabeth's subterfuge in hiding Mr. King's identity and Fletcher's dogged determination to find him. But as they work towards a common goal they soon realize that they are well on their way to friendship and perhaps something more. But can the social gap between the two be overcome? Only time will tell...

I enjoyed the audio version of this book and it was well-presented. The pacing worked well for me and I really enjoyed the three different stories alternated between. Elizabeth and Fletcher's story style was definitely different but it worked well in bringing the story as a whole together. If you want clean-reading with a Victorian flair you have to give this book a try.

About the Book:
Elizabeth Black is the headmistress of a girls’ school and a well-respected author of “silver-fork” novels, stories written both for and about the upper-class ladies of Victorian society. But by night, she writes very different kinds of stories—the Penny Dreadfuls that are all the rage among the working-class men. Under the pseudonym Mr. King, Elizabeth has written about dashing heroes fighting supernatural threats and dangerous outlaws romancing helpless women. They contain all the adventure and mystery that her real-life lacks.

Fletcher Walker began life as a street urchin, but is now the most successful author in the Penny Dreadful market, that is until Mr. King started taking all of his readers--and his profits. No one knows who King is, including Fletcher’s fellow members of the Dread Penny Society, a fraternity of authors dedicated to secretly fighting for the rights of the less-fortunate.

Determined to find the elusive Mr. King, Fletcher approaches Miss Black. As a fellow-author, she is well-known among the high-class writers; perhaps she could be persuaded to make some inquiries as to Mr. King’s whereabouts? Elizabeth agrees to help Fletcher, if only to insure her secret identity is never discovered.

For the first time, Elizabeth experiences the thrill of a cat-and-mouse adventure reminiscent of one of her own novels as she tries to throw Fletcher off her scent. But the more time they spend together, the more she loses her heart. Its upper-class against working-class, author against author where readers, reputations, and romance are all on the line.

Seeking the Truth ~ Review

Seeking the Truth
True Blue K-9 Unit #5
By Terri Reed

Rachelle Clark is determined to be more than a fluff-piece reporter and the only way she sees able to do that is to secretly work on her own investigation into the murder of Jordan Jameson. When she gets the assignment to cover the local K-9 unit's participation in the upcoming national police dog field trials and certification competition she views this as the perfect chance to interview Officer Carter Jameson. Just one problem with her plan - Carter Jameson and the Jameson family have anything but warm fuzzy feelings towards reporters.

Carter Jameson has better things to do than deal with yet another reporter out to make a name over his brother's murder. But when Rachelle's safety and life are in danger he knows that he has to do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Now he just has to keep his heart safe because falling in love is not an option. As the danger increases it appears that Rachelle's investigation into Jordan's death has placed her right in the crosshairs of a killer.

This is the fifth book in the True Blue K-9 Unit series. Each book can be read as a standalone though there is a series arc that ties all the books together. The series arc is the murder and subsequent search for who and why. If you like clean-reading suspense with a touch of romance you will enjoy this book and series that features New York's finest four-legged officers.  So sit back and get ready to spend a few hours in New York with a top K-9 unit.

About the Book:
Her investigation could prove fatal…

In this exciting True Blue K-9 Unit installment

By secretly investigating the New York City K-9 Command Unit chief’s murder, reporter Rachelle Clark puts a bulls-eye on her back. Single dad and K-9 unit officer Carter Jameson thought Rachelle was reporting on police-field-dog trials—not his brother’s death. Though he’s not happy about her true purpose, the danger is real…and he and his trusty German shepherd must save her.

Prospector's Run ~ Review and Giveaway

Prospector's Run
Artifacts #1
By Kevin W. Bates

Holtz Mitsumi had wagered on an incredible find, a find that didn't happen. Worse, it put him in debt with no hopes of ever flying again. But a desperate man in need of a crew may give Holtz what he needs, a chance to once again captain a ship and redeem himself. And provide him with a means of completing a mission of his own. Holtz discovered an alien artifact, an artifact that is seemingly worthless but for compulsion he now feels. A compulsion to return it to its place of origin, wherever that may be.

There is just one little problem - a powerful adversary is determined to stop them and their haphazard crew of misfits. With an old ship and a less than ideal crew, what hope do they have of succeeding, much less surviving their prospector run? They say fortune favors the foolish, but in Holtz's experience, that has never happened for him. But maybe this time will be different or not.

Prospector's Run is an intriguing read, one that takes the reader into a new world - a world in search of the past and all its lost technologies. But finding these lost worlds that were destroyed several millennia ago will take more than luck. It will take a ragtag crew coming together and overcoming the ghosts of their pasts. But secrets are hard to let go of, especially if they make you vulnerable.

If you are looking for a compelling SciFi read this is it. And even better it is the first book in a series, a series which has a most promising beginning. So strap in and get ready to go on the adventure of a lifetime with Captain Holtz Mitsumi and his crew.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Meet the Author:

Kevin W. Bates was born in Berkeley, California, and, with the exception of a couple year stint in Sydney, Australia, and a study abroad program in Japan, was raised there. In his Martin Luther King Jr. High and Berkeley High School years, Kevin developed a life-long fascination with science fiction (and, oddly, nuclear weapons) and a tendency to daydream. He discovered early that among the greatest joys in life is the thrill of losing yourself in a gripping space adventure soaring across the galaxy. Raised on classic science fiction authors such as Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Ray Bradbury, Kevin took up writing science fiction to provide the same mind-expanding thrills he enjoyed from those authors and more contemporary ones like Alastair Reynolds, Iain M. Banks, David Brin, and Neal Stephenson.
