The Last Thing She Said ~ Audiobook Review

CHRIS CROSSED MURDER (A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery) by Lauren Carr

THE LAST THING SHE SAID by Lauren Carr
The Last Thing She Said
A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery #3
By Lauren Carr
Narrated by Mike Alger

Nearly 40 years ago, mystery author Mercedes Livingston disappeared. Everyone assumed she and her husband, George were the victims of a kidnapping gone wrong.  But Harper's Ferry has been hiding the truth about this cold case, and now it is up to Chris Matheson and the Geezer Squad to clear their late friend in the decades-old case.

Can the Geezers determine what happened after all these years? They put their varied skills to use and call on those they know they are convinced they can discover the truth. But when Helen's ex shows up, they have to deal with him and all the baggage he's about to dump on Chris.

Anyone familiar with Lauren Carr's other series will enjoy a few brief scenes with Mac, Archie, Joshua, Gnarly, and the political scene brewing on Spencer Mountain. Oh, yeah, there are some interesting developments in regard to Gnarly's mayorship, and Chris's dog Sterling gets caught up in Gnarly's antics (in my opinion, the best story thread in the book and worth a few laughs).
Let's just say Gnarly was at his best in this one in one-upping his political opponent.

With plot twists and a whole cast of suspects, this one will keep the Geezers and the reader occupied with figuring out just what happened all those years ago. But to uncover the truth, they have to go back to the cold case upon which Mercedes Livingston's best-seller was based. And could the last words Mercedes Livingston spoke to Chris all those years ago be a clue?

Get ready for some unexpected twists, betrayals, and political shenanigans in this newest addition to the mystery world created by Lauren Carr.

I listened to the audio version of this book, and the reading by Mike Alger is excellent. This is a murder mystery, so the reader should expect some violence and, in general, misdeeds that don't paint some of the characters in a good light.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

** Some readers might find some scenes objectionable due to content
so if you want gentle reads this isn't one you will want to read.

"Too many twists and turns to easily share about this book. Nevertheless, Carr has pulled off another "hit" that kept me reading in one setting until the clues were so well together that the villain fell into our laps...or Chris's, LOL Carr has put a lot into the book beyond the mysteries this time...Characters enjoyed chocotinis, visited book stores...and even blundered into getting engaged (the ring had been purchased 4 months ago)... But, for me, a special thank you for the political spoof at a time when politics at the national level is devastating, gave me a laugh and lightened the load of it all!" - Review by Glenda Bixler, Book Reader's Heaven

About the Book:
“I’m working on the greatest mystery ever,” was the last thing noted mystery novelist Mercedes Livingston said to seven-year-old Chris Matheson before walking out of Hill House Hotel never to be seen again.

For decades, the writer’s fate remained a puzzling mystery until an autographed novel and a letter put a grown-up Chris Matheson on the trail of a cunning killer. With the help of a team of fellow retired law enforcement officers, each a specialist in their own field of investigation, Chris puts a flame to this cold case to uncover what had really happened that night Mercedes Livingston walked out of Hill House Hotel. Watch out! The clues are getting hot!

Winter Frost ~ Audiobook Review

CHRIS CROSSED MURDER (A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery) by Lauren Carr

WINTER FROST by Lauren Carr
Winter Frost
A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery #2
By Lauren Carr
Narrated by Mike Alger

For three years, Chris Matheson has known that his wife Blair was dead, and he has moved on with his life. There is just one little problem he just saw her, and she is very much alive.  Not only is she alive someone is trying to kill her. And now Chris finds himself in the middle of something that has placed a target on his back.

Time to call in the Geezer Squad - the "book club" that Chris's father helped start years ago. But this book club isn't your normal group of retirees who gather after hours to discuss the latest mystery. Nope, this group doesn't crack a book during their get-together, rather they crack cases, and the colder they are, the better they like them. And the case Chris just found himself in needs all the resources the Geezer Squad has at its disposal, especially if they all plan on living long enough to see justice served and national security preserved.

In this case, Chris gets some help from Murphy Thornton an agent who somehow gets himself attached to Chris's case. And then there is Tristan Faraday and Nigel, who find themselves drawn deep into the case thanks to Murphy.  (Fans of Lauren Carr will recognize Murphy, Tristan, and Nigel from her other series)

And, in case you've read the previous book in the series, Ice Chris's mother is most definitely in it, and I can, with all honesty, say she's someone I wouldn't want to meet in person or get on her bad side (which sounds fairly easy to do). And then there is Sterling, a German Shepherd that you don't want to play cards against. Sterling is easily my favorite character in this series, with Thor (the Matheson pet rabbit) running a close second.

Overall this is a good read, or in my case, a good listen. Mike Alger does a great job presenting the story so that one doesn't get bored in the telling. He changes up the pitch and accents of the various characters so that they are distinct and recognizable.

Those who enjoy mysteries will enjoy this Lauren Carr offering. If you haven't read the first book in this series, that is okay, as it is able to be enjoyed as a standalone book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

"Filled with twists and turns, Winter Frost reads perfectly well as a stand-alone, although it is part of a series. The author creates tension and suspense throughout by keeping the reader guessing; she keeps readers engaged with well fleshed out characters and a dash of humor. Sterling, the retired German Shepherd police dog turned card shark, is a new favorite. As the story flows, the truth unfolds, layer by layer, leading to a satisfying conclusion.

"Winter Frost was an entertaining, at times humorous read with suspense, some surprises, and even cute animals in the mix." Review of Winter Frost by The iRead Review

Book Description:
It all started with a chance encounter in the city with Blair, his late wife.

Chris Matheson and the Geezer Squad, working under the guise of a book club, dig into the events surrounding his late wife’s supposed death halfway around the globe. A state department employee shoots himself in the back three times. A CIA operative goes missing. A woman is targeted by an international assassin three years after being declared dead in a terrorist attack overseas.

Nothing is as it seems.

In his most personal cold case, Chris fights to uncover why the state department told him that Blair, the mother of his children, had been killed when she was alive. What had she uncovered that has made her a target? Who terrified her so much that she had gone into hiding and why are they now after him?

Shattered Reflection ~ Review

Shattered Reflection
The Shattered Lands #1
By Madisyn Carlin

The land is on the verge of slipping into yet another war, distrust is taking hold, and the crown is threatened by the very people who are entrusted to protect it. Can those who have been broken by the past hope to restore what was lost? Or will the icy evil that is attempting to steal their hearts and souls prevail?

Layree's brother Loren Alocer has been stolen away by the royal crown guards- a crown that is at the mercy of a cruel and evil hand. Layree is determined to get her brother back no matter what and by any means necessary. And by any means, she will be forced to accept the help of a man she now views as an enemy. But she saw what happened to her brother before he was taken away, and she won't stop until he is freed.

Nordica Icerri is the heir to the crown, but until her aunt and uncle deem her fit to rule, they will act on her behalf. And to be considered fit, she must be purged of any and all emotion. And her uncle is more than happy to help her obtain such coldness of heart. And the methods he is using will surely break her eventually.

Shattered Reflection is an interesting retelling of The Snow Queen. The story is told through the viewpoints of five characters who have different reasons for doing what they are doing, but at their core, caring and wanting to protect others is their motivation. This is excellent reading and a series debut that is not to be missed. The characters and settings are more than a two-dimensional place on the page; there is depth and layers to everything if one is looking.

I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations -  all thoughts expressed are my own.

Book Description:

Can hope be found for four shattered souls?

Princess Nordica Icerri’s crown will be purchased with blood—her blood. Now the sole heir to the throne, she is determined to be the queen the Snowlands deserve, but that comes with a price: a numbed heart and soul. Only when she meets kidnapped physician Loren Alocer does Nordica allow herself to hope she can become queen without completely losing herself. But not everyone wants what’s best for the Snowlands, and Nordica’s upcoming rule is compromised at every turn. Can the criminal physician—and his faith—thaw Nordica’s heart, or is she destined to be the heartless queen she is being forced to become?

War shattered not only Breac Finson’s heart, but his faith as well. Tired of fighting, Breac only wants to be left alone, but his efforts are for naught when a friend calls in a favor. He soon finds himself in an unexpected alliance with Layree Alocer, a woman determined to find her wrongfully-kidnapped brother at all costs. Can a broken soldier help right a wrong—and find his faith again in the process?

Sides must be chosen and loyalties will be tested as a new war approaches. Can broken lives be mended in time to help save the Snowlands, or is evil already too deeply embedded?

A Flash of Magic ~ Review with Giveaway

A Flash of Magic
Tales of Ambia #4
By Allison Tebo

A Flash of Magic is a collection of tales that expand on the previous stories of the series. There is no chronological place for this book to fall as each of the eight stories takes place at different times, examining different characters.

I especially loved the tale that introduced Prince Colin to Cynthia. Let's just say it involves rolls, butter, and antlers. Believe me, it is one that you have to read. And then there are several stories in which Burndee, our Reluctant Godfather, takes center stage either through his eyes or the eyes of another character. I won't say he is the most disagreeable fairy godfather known to exist, as I haven't met them all, but he is the most unique disagreeable fairy godfather I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. But beneath that gruff personality beats a heart of pure gold (fairy godfathers do have hearts, right?).

I loved all these short tales and the author's explanatory notes about the story behind the story for each and placing it within the chronology of the tales. And then there is Files, a truly annoying fairy who is the ultimate champion of hypocrisy and double standards. Get ready for a few laughs from his journal entries.

This is a fun book that you don't want to miss. It was an absolute delight to read (and laugh) through. And, of course, you need to read and enjoy the three previous books first to fully appreciate A Flash of Magic.

I was provided a complimentary digital ARC (pre-release copy) of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

The Wrong Side of Murder ~ Review with Giveaway

THE WRONG SIDE OF MURDER (a Nikki Bryant Cozy Mystery) by Lauren Carr
The Wrong Side of Murder
A Nikki Bryant Cozy Mystery #2
By Lauren Carr

Nikki Bryant and Elmo are back and the cold case that is about to capture Nikki's attention involved a classmate who was tried and convicted in the court of public opinion of her mother's murder.

Jodi Gibbons never saw her mother's murderer brought to justice because Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, found Jodi guilty when she became the victim of gossip and rumor. Twenty years have passed a chance meeting finds Nikki looking to right the wrongs of the past and give Jodi a chance to  bring her side before the listening and viewing public. And with any luck the true killer will be found. But someone wants Jodi to be silent on the subject. But with Nikki on the case she's not about to let the killers away with another murder and have an innocent woman again take the blame.

But could Nikki be seeing something that isn't there? She's going to put her award winning investigative skills to the test. And if she gets a little help along the way from friends, family, and significant other all the better to get to the long ridden past. And Elmo is available when not putting his other talents to use.

This is the second book in the Nikki Bryant series and it is an engaging read, just as Killer Deadline was, though I did miss Nikki's interactions with @nerdyguy. And like almost everyone who's met Elmo, I've become a fan of this distinct, unique, and highly intelligent dog who just happens to be a social media sensation, and with good reason. So if you are looking for a new cozy mystery to enjoy give Nikki, Elmo, and all the Bryant clan a place on your TBR list, you won't be sorry. This is a fun mostly lighthearted murder mystery (murder being the non-lighthearted moment btw), with a dog you'll adore.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion ~ All  thoughts expressed are my own.

The Wrong Side of Murder is another wonderful cozy mystery by author Lauren Carr. It has all the elements that draw me in - an intelligent female lead, an equally smart boyfriend who partners to help her, a complicated plot where clues are slowly revealed, people who aren't what they seem to be, comedic moments to balance the darker ones, and several quirky pets full of personality.

It's a wonderful book to escape into at the end of the day. And get ready to read into the wee hours as, if you're like me, you won't be able to stop reading until the mystery is revealed.

Mountain SurvivalMountain Survival
K-9 Search + Rescue #3
By Christy Barritt

Autumn Mercer loves her job as a search-and-rescue park ranger, but she had no idea that the rescue that she happens upon would prove so dangerous. Can she and K-9 partner Sherlock find the missing and injured hiker before it is too late?

Derek Peterson and his brother William were finally getting together after drifting apart over the years. But when William was injured while climbing Derek knew he had to find help and fast. With a storm, fast approaching stumbling upon a park ranger is more than Derek could have hoped for. But when they make their way to his camp William is missing and the only clue they can find is blood and unknown people shooting at them.

With little choice, Autumn and Derek have to take shelter from the deluge that has moved in. Unfortunately, the men trying to kill aren't put off by the storm. Who are these men and why are they tracking them? If they can uncover the answer to those questions they just might have a chance of surviving and making a plan to find and save William.

Mountain Survival is a well-paced read that takes the reader on a life-or-death trek into the mountainous woods of Virginia. Surviving a killer, battling nature, and dealing with an unexpected attraction what more do you need to keep you turning the pages? This clean-reading Love Inspired Suspense read is the third in the K-9 Search and  Rescue series but it can easily be read as a standalone book. So sit back in your favorite reading corner with and a cup of your favorite tea or coffee and escape into an evening or two of reading.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
